A Reminder From The Past, Elise Roy Dec 2010

A Reminder From The Past, Elise Roy

Verbum

In lieu of an abstract, below is the essay's first paragraph.

"Nearly forty-six years ago to the day, Martin Luther King Jr. accepted the Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts in trying to eradicate African American discrimination by using non-violence. Dr. King accepted this prize whilst racial injustice was still prominent in the United States. He did this with the hope that someday people would find a way to live along side each other in peace. “If this [peace] is to be achieved, man must evolve for all human conflict a method which rejects revenge, aggression and retaliation. The foundation …

Directional Patch Antenna Array Design For Desktop Wireless Internet, Noah Snyder Dec 2010

Directional Patch Antenna Array Design For Desktop Wireless Internet, Noah Snyder

Electrical Engineering

To improve desktop wireless internet access, two patch antenna configurations were investigated in order to find an alternative for a dipole antenna, which is commonly used for Wi-Fi access. A Linksys WMP54G pci-card wireless adapter was used to test three antennas for 802.11g communications. The standard WMP54G dipole antenna and two patch antenna configurations were tested for Wi-Fi signal strength. The antennas were also tested in Cal Poly’s anechoic chamber to obtain resonant frequency and gain measurements. A 2.437 GHz center frequency, 72 MHz bandwidth antenna consisting of a single microstrip patch was constructed. After the patch antenna was determined …

Consolidating And Implementing An Employee Handbook At Souza’S Dairy, Inc., Adrianna Souza Dec 2010

Consolidating And Implementing An Employee Handbook At Souza’S Dairy, Inc., Adrianna Souza

Dairy Science

The objective of this senior project was to create a more useful handbook that employees will read, condensing the existing but still retaining the important information. Along with updating the handbook, I plan to implement the use of the employee handbooks. An employee handbook is an important solution to help employers and employees have consistent information. An outdated employee handbook can create problems in the workplace. New and changed laws occur every year and the firm will want to ensure that the employee handbook and policy handbook are up to date with the most recent laws and policies to mitigate …

Redemptive Suffering And Christology In African American Christian Theology, Nathaniel Holmes Jr. Dec 2010

Redemptive Suffering And Christology In African American Christian Theology, Nathaniel Holmes Jr.

Journal of the Black Catholic Theological Symposium

In this paper, based on a presentation delivered at the 2009 Annual Meeting at the Atlanta University Center, Holmes engages the debate over the redemptive nature of suffering in Christianity. Are evil, suffering, and oppression redemptive, thereby bringing us closer to the divine? Or, are suffering and oppression detrimental to the salvific nature of Christ’s liberation? Holmes explores the religious and philosophical literary tradition of redemptive suffering, especially as interpreted in African American religious thought, and shows us that the answers to these questions are complex and multifaceted.

The Role Of The Black Catholic Theologian And Scholar In Today’S Context, M. Shawn Copeland Dec 2010

The Role Of The Black Catholic Theologian And Scholar In Today’S Context, M. Shawn Copeland

Journal of the Black Catholic Theological Symposium

Based on her keynote address delivered during the 2009 Annual Meeting at Atlanta University’s Lyke Center, Copeland takes a look back at the nearly forty-year history of black theological scholarship, reminding us of the intimate link between culture, history, and the ongoing and critical need for a theology that is authentic and responsive to the needs of the poor and marginalized. She reminds us of the urgency for the pursuit of truth and freedom, especially for black scholars and theologians. However, the quest for authenticity comes with a price.

Thea Bowman: The Courage To Keep On Keeping On!, Maurice J. Nutt C.Ss.R.

Journal of the Black Catholic Theological Symposium

The year 2010 marks another anniversary, this one more somber than the others. Sister Thea Bowman, F.S.P.A., Ph.D., after a great deal of suffering, finally lost her battle to cancer in 1990. Her zest for living, her profound spirituality, and her joy marked all those who had the honor of knowing her. Here are two reflections on her life and influence, the first by Cyprian Davis, O.S.B. who worked with Sr. Thea at the Institute for Black Catholic Studies, and the second by one of her former students, Maurice Nutt, C.Ss. R., D.Min.

The Decline Of Black Catholicism: What’S Racial Slavery To Do With It?, Kwame Assenyoh S.V.D. Dec 2010

The Decline Of Black Catholicism: What’S Racial Slavery To Do With It?, Kwame Assenyoh S.V.D.

Journal of the Black Catholic Theological Symposium

This essay links the current decline of black Catholicism to the racial slavery practiced in Roman Catholicism at its settlement in the USA. Employing missiological anthropological analysis, Assenyoh, S.V.D., argues that the racism that characterized the beginning of New World slavery remains in the Church and accounts for the decline of black Catholicism. Assenyoh calls for persistent critiques of racial slavery in the Church’s history if there must be transformation rather than reformation.

“Righteous Discontent:” Black Catholic Protest In The United States Of America, 1817-1941, Diane Batts Morrow

Journal of the Black Catholic Theological Symposium

In this essay, based on a paper delivered at the 2009 Annual Meeting at the Atlanta University Center, Morrow shows the awareness of black Catholics about their position within the Catholic Church between the years 1817 and the 1940s and their struggle to improve their situation. Black Catholics from this period show a strong desire to function as agents of positive change in their Church, and to challenge discrimination within their parishes.

Racial Attitude Effects In The 2008 Presidential Election: Examining The Unconventional Factors Shaping Vote Choice In A Most Unconventional Election, Herbert F. Weisberg, Christopher J. Devine Dec 2010

Racial Attitude Effects In The 2008 Presidential Election: Examining The Unconventional Factors Shaping Vote Choice In A Most Unconventional Election, Herbert F. Weisberg, Christopher J. Devine

Political Science Faculty Publications

Every election has unique elements, but the 2008 U.S. presidential race had it all: an African-American presidential candidate who won his party’s nomination by defeating a former first lady, an historically unpopular outgoing president, two ongoing wars, a failing economy, and a war hero running for president with a female vice-presidential running mate. With so many unique elements to account for, disentangling their independent effects to identify the dominant factors shaping the 2008 election is a tremendous challenge. This paper explores a wide variety of factors potentially influencing the 2008 vote, but it devotes particular attention to two exceptionally relevant …

Gravity Couplings In The Standard-Model Extension, Quentin G. Bailey

Publications

The Standard-Model Extension (SME) is an action-based expansion describing general Lorentz violation for known matter and fields, including gravity. In this talk, I will discuss the Lorentz-violating gravity couplings in the SME. Toy models that match the SME expansion, including vector and two-tensor models, are reviewed. Finally I discuss the status of experiments and observations probing gravity coefficients for Lorentz violation.

The Role Of Dopamine In Resistance To Change Of Operant Behavior, Stacey L. Quick Dec 2010

The Role Of Dopamine In Resistance To Change Of Operant Behavior, Stacey L. Quick

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Psychological disorders such as autism, obsessive-compulsive disorder, drug addiction, and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder involve atypically persistent behavior and atypical activity of the neurotransmitter dopamine. Behavioral momentum theory states that the persistence of behavior in a context is determined by the reinforcement received previously in that context. Contexts previously associated with higher rates of reinforcement yield greater persistence of behavior than contexts previously associated with lower rates of reinforcement. According to a prominent hypothesis in behavioral neuroscience, dopamine mediates the incentive salience of a stimulus. A synthesis of behavioral momentum theory and the incentive salience hypothesis proposes similar roles for dopamine activity …

Biochemical Characterization Of Theromin, A Novel Leech Inhibitor, And The Interaction Between The Fourth Metalbinding Domain Of Wilson Disease Protein And Its Copper(I) Chaperone Hah1, Brian A. Zeider Dec 2010

Biochemical Characterization Of Theromin, A Novel Leech Inhibitor, And The Interaction Between The Fourth Metalbinding Domain Of Wilson Disease Protein And Its Copper(I) Chaperone Hah1, Brian A. Zeider

Dissertations

Theromin, a novel thrombin inhibitor from the leech Theromyzon tessulatum, has been shown to be the strongest inhibitor to date. There has been a lot of attention on direct thrombin inhibitors as a much more efficient drug for anticoagulation therapy. One main reason for the need of strong direct thrombin inhibitors is that the current therapy, heparin, causes alternative clotting events in some patients where antibodies are made to the heparin/thrombin complex and causes clots to occur by different methods. Recently there has been a strong inhibitor from a leech used, hirudin, that can inhibit with a Ki …

Toward Automated Detection And Diagnosis Of Mammographic Microcalcifications, Imad Mohammad Zyout Dec 2010

Toward Automated Detection And Diagnosis Of Mammographic Microcalcifications, Imad Mohammad Zyout

Dissertations

Mammographie diagnosis is the most effective technique to detect breast cancer in its infancy when it is most responsive to treatment. An early and a significant indicator of breast cancer is the presence of clustered microcalcifications (MCs). Mammographie MCs greatly vary in their appearance and shape, and become indistinguishable when surrounded by dense breast tissue. This makes radiologist's interpretation of mammograms a tedious and an error prone task.

Although computer aided diagnosis (CAD) methods are being developed to aid radiologist in detecting and analyzing the malignancy of MCs, existing systems have not achieved a satisfactory performance. The specificity of existing …

Experimentally Reducing Preset And Hysteresis Effects In Creating A Non-Linear Model For Brake Hoses, Jai Thomas Dec 2010

Experimentally Reducing Preset And Hysteresis Effects In Creating A Non-Linear Model For Brake Hoses, Jai Thomas

Dissertations

This research investigates a brake hose simulation model that includes the effect of nonlinear torsional stiffness in addition to the usually considered bending stiffness on brake hose shape. A simulation model consisting of beams and torsion springs is presented in this research to predict brake hose shape when it is twisted through different angles. This knowledge can help reduce the possibility of a significant source of failure related to brake hose abrasion on nearby structures, thus eliminating the safety hazard of a premature failure of hoses. This would also eliminate the need for polymer bumpers at the rub points since …

Examining The Effectiveness And Efficiency Of Two Delivery Models To Teach Children Abduction Prevention Skills, Kimberly E. Seckinger-Bancroft Dec 2010

Examining The Effectiveness And Efficiency Of Two Delivery Models To Teach Children Abduction Prevention Skills, Kimberly E. Seckinger-Bancroft

Dissertations

Nearly all children receive abduction prevention training. Most traditional education programs increase the learner's knowledge, but often fail to produce concomitant behavior change. Behavioral Skills Training (BST) is a multicomponent, behavior-based training strategy with empirical support demonstrating its effectiveness in teaching children safety skills, behavioral generalization and maintenance over time. BST, however, is restricted by financial, human and time costs and limited resources to implement the training protocol. These factors likely limit widespread adoption of the training model. This study examined the use of computer-based instruction that emphasized active responding and mastery level performance requirements to teach school-aged children abduction …
