Tracing Water Sources Of Terrestrial Animal Populations With Stable Isotopes: Laboratory Tests With Crickets And Spiders, Kevin E. Mccluney, John L. Sabo Dec 2010

Tracing Water Sources Of Terrestrial Animal Populations With Stable Isotopes: Laboratory Tests With Crickets And Spiders, Kevin E. Mccluney, John L. Sabo

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

Fluxes of carbon, nitrogen, and water between ecosystem components and organisms have great impacts across levels of biological organization. Although much progress has been made in tracing carbon and nitrogen, difficulty remains in tracing water sources from the ecosystem to animals and among animals (the ‘‘water web’’). Naturally occurring, nonradioactive isotopes of hydrogen and oxygen in water provide a potential method for tracing water sources. However, using this approach for terrestrial animals is complicated by a change in water isotopes within the body due to differences in activity of heavy and light isotopes during cuticular and transpiratory water losses. Here …

A Genetic Algorithm For Multiobjective Hard Scheduling Optimization, Elías Niño, Carlos Ardila, Alfredo J. Perez, Yexid Donoso

Computer Science Faculty Publications

This paper proposes a genetic algorithm for multiobjective scheduling optimization based in the object oriented design with constrains on delivery times, process precedence and resource availability. Initially, the programming algorithm (PA) was designed and implemented, taking into account all constraints mentioned. This algorithm’s main objective is, given a sequence of production orders, products and processes, calculate its total programming cost and time.
Once the programming algorithm was defined, the genetic algorithm (GA) was developed for minimizing two objectives: delivery times and total programming cost. The stages defined for this algorithm were: selection, crossover and mutation. During the first stage, the …

Foreigners' Archive: Contemporary China In The Blogs Of American Expatriates, Qi Tang, Chin-Chung Chao

Communication Faculty Publications

This study scrutinized blogs written by American expatriates in twenty-firstcentury China. The primary objectives were to explore how China is represented in such blogs and to understand the discursive processes through which the American bloggers utilize the blogging technology to narrate their perceptions of the Chinese realities. Drawing on the postcolonial and discursive perspectives, we have determined that the blogs examined here consist of a distinct discursive space of cultural representation and contestation. They were also interpreted as a digital extension of conventional Euro-American travel writing as they share with the genre a set of rhetorical conventions and face the …

Examples Of Non-Unique Maximum Likelihood Estimates, Salim Ismail Algharabi Dec 2010

Examples Of Non-Unique Maximum Likelihood Estimates, Salim Ismail Algharabi

Journal of Economics and Administrative Sciences

This paper explores the complexities and limitations of Maximum Likelihood Estimation (MLE) when the uniqueness of the estimator cannot be guaranteed. While standard statistical theory often assumes that MLE provides a single, optimal point estimate, this research demonstrates scenarios where multiple values or intervals can maximize the likelihood function. Drawing on foundational works by Bickel, Doksum, Hogg, and Craig, the author provides a detailed analysis of distributions—such as the uniform distribution and the Cauchy distribution with a location parameter—where the MLE is inherently non-unique. The study highlights that even with a small sample size, such as n=2, the likelihood function …
