"Daily Planet" Vs. "Daily Bugle": The Changing Depiction Of Journalism In American Comic Books, Andrew Alan Smith
"Daily Planet" Vs. "Daily Bugle": The Changing Depiction Of Journalism In American Comic Books, Andrew Alan Smith
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Journalists and journalism have always been popular vehicles for storytelling in comic books, as they are in other pop culture media. The more than 70 years of comic books in America have provided thousands of fictional journalists, especially in the superhero genre. Primary among these are the staffs of the Daily Planet at DCComics and the Daily Bugle at Marvel Comics. This content analysis -- utilizing hundreds of the original texts but also historical research and a questionnaire to significant creators -- shines a spotlight on a quantum shift in the depiction of journalists in comics. Until the introduction of …
Engaging Rural Community Members As Problem Solvers: Application Of Health Communication To Improve The Quality Of Health Care In Southwest Uganda, Tesfa N. Alexander
Engaging Rural Community Members As Problem Solvers: Application Of Health Communication To Improve The Quality Of Health Care In Southwest Uganda, Tesfa N. Alexander
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Using communication theories and anthropological models, I analyze the narratives of community members who are caretakers of children ages 5 and under in Southwest Uganda to situate rural community members as problem solvers whose insights can be used to inform sustainable and effective public health strategies that can lead to improved health outcomes. Throughout my analysis, I uncover themes and concepts from community members' narratives that demonstrate that health-seeking behaviors of rural community members are largely shaped by perceptions of interpersonal and social trust in local health care practitioners. Additionally, an analysis of discourse from patient-provider interactions in biomedical and …

Not About Me: A Memoir, Candice Renee Baxter
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
A rebellious teenage girl with driving bravado and Southern manners gets pregnant and married, in that order, her senior year of high school, class of 1998. Through cinematic scenes like a shotgun wedding, struggling marriage, single motherhood, college and business career, the feisty narrator builds tension up to a climax. This is not just another triumphant story of teenage pregnancy set deep in the heart of the Bible belt. Not About Me: A Memoir is an approximately 47,000 word book-length example of what happens ten years later when young parents grow in separate directions but maintain a relationship for the …

Emove: Movement Detection And Classification For Tagged Assets On Embedded Platforms, Bhagavathy Krishna
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Most of the existing real-time asset tracking systems involves frequent communication of a device placed on the object to be tracked with a fixed infrastructure, which rapidly depletes the battery of the tag, due to the high energy demand of communication. This thesis presents emove, a system implemented on a low cost tag node that can be attached to assets. An emove tag autonomously detects and classifies movement of assets while being in deep sleep mode for most of its life. It communicates with the infrastructure only when it confirms the movement detected is of interest. Our design emphasizes energy-efficient …
Stochastic Simulation Of Human Pulmonary Blood Flow Based On Anatomic And Elasticity Data, Jun Shi
Stochastic Simulation Of Human Pulmonary Blood Flow Based On Anatomic And Elasticity Data, Jun Shi
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
In order to fully understand the function of the lungs, it is important to determine the transit time of the pulmonary circulation. However, a practical model to estimate the transit time is difficult to be found in literature, because of the high complexity of the whole pulmonary circulation system. This study developed a computing model of steady blood flow in human lungs based on detailed morphology and elasticity data by Huang et al (1996) [5], which incorporated a Diameter-Defined Strahler System to simulate a human lung branching system. A stochastic simulation approach was introduced. Considering Huang’s connectivity data between different …
The Role Of Butch Identity In A Model Of Self-Esteem Among Sexual Minority Women, Katherine Ruth Hiestand
The Role Of Butch Identity In A Model Of Self-Esteem Among Sexual Minority Women, Katherine Ruth Hiestand
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
This study explored the relationship of butch gender identity to perceived social support, level of outness, lesbian internalized homophobia, and self-esteem. Previous research has supported relationships between perceived social support, level of outness, lesbian internalized homophobia, and self-esteem in sexual minority women; this study explored these relationships specifically in masculine-identified lesbians. Using data obtained from an Internet survey on lesbian gender identity, a subset (N = 191) was composed of individuals who considered themselves masculine and who identified as butch (127; 66.5%) and those who did not identify as butch (64; 33.5%). A path analysis was conducted to determine what …
Guarding The Chapel: The Story Of A Small Community, Kept Faith, And An Ever-Changing River, Leigh Ann Vanscoy
Guarding The Chapel: The Story Of A Small Community, Kept Faith, And An Ever-Changing River, Leigh Ann Vanscoy
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
This piece emerged from an article I wrote for The Poughkeepsie Journal, a Gannett daily newspaper in the Mid-Hudson region of New York State. As a summer reporter for the local section I wrote weekly “Dateline” stories that highlighted local and historical places in the area. I chose to write about my own church, St. Nicholas on the Hudson, because of its history and community spirit in the small river town of New Hamburg. Membership and resources were dropping and I hoped that my article would promote interest in the chapel. While researching and interviewing for that news story I …
"The Leprosy Of Unreality": The Capacity Of Suffering To Deform Or Redeem In Dickens's Great Expectations, A Tale Of Two Cities, And Little Dorrit, Kathryne Marie Hoyle-Brown
"The Leprosy Of Unreality": The Capacity Of Suffering To Deform Or Redeem In Dickens's Great Expectations, A Tale Of Two Cities, And Little Dorrit, Kathryne Marie Hoyle-Brown
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
This thesis examines the ramifications of suffering in Dickensian transformation. Ideally, suffering should reveal the best aspects of human nature, and this thesis suggests that while it is possible to have pain without heroism, it is impossible to have heroism without pain. Couched within Dickens's discourse on suffering and redemption are both overt and covert messages to his Victorian audience as Dickens urges them to strip away their masks of pretense, "the leprosy of unreality"that enslaves them. Dickens delights in blurring apparently dichotomous boundaries as he paradoxically seeks reality through his fiction. For him, redemption is a discursive structure that …
The Homefront Food Fight: The Conflict Between The American Public And Enemy Prisoners Of War During World War Ii, Kathryn Elizabeth Russell
The Homefront Food Fight: The Conflict Between The American Public And Enemy Prisoners Of War During World War Ii, Kathryn Elizabeth Russell
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Food rationing and shortages on the homefront during World War II led to severe criticism by the American public of the rations given to enemy prisoners of war held in camps in the United States. In response to public and congressional criticism, the War Department reduced rations to enemy prisoners of war. The official exclamation proffered by the War Department for the reduction in rations was the food shortages across the country. However, analysis of the timeline of press reports and congressional investigations, coupled with the military's excessive food procurement activities, belie the assertion by the War Department that the …
Efficient Separation And Sensitive Detection Of Listeria Monocytogenes Using Magnetic Nanoparticles, Microfluidics And Interdigitated Microelectrode Based Impedance Immunosensor, Damira Ashimkhanovna Kanayeva
Efficient Separation And Sensitive Detection Of Listeria Monocytogenes Using Magnetic Nanoparticles, Microfluidics And Interdigitated Microelectrode Based Impedance Immunosensor, Damira Ashimkhanovna Kanayeva
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Listeria monocytogenes continues to be a major foodborne pathogen that causes food poisoning and sometimes death in immunosuppressed people and abortion in pregnant women. Nanoparticles have recently drawn attentions for use in immunomagnetic separation techniques due to their greater surface area/volume ratio and better stability against sedimentation in the absence of a magnetic field. Interdigitated microelectrodes and microfluidics make material transfer more efficient and biological/chemical interaction between the surface and solution phase much quicker. Magnetic nanoparticles (Fe3O4) with a 30 nm diameter were functionalized with rabbit anti-L. monocytogenes antibodies via biotin-streptavidin bonds and then amalgamated with target bacterial cells …

Magnetic measurements have been carried out on the Mn-intercalated transition-metal dichalcogenide Mn0.25Ti1+yS2. The material, which contained a concentration y≈0.1 of excess intercalated Ti, exhibited paramagnetic behavior at high temperatures with an effective moment per Mn ion of µeff=6.07 ± 0.23 µB, which shows that the system comprises localized Mn2+ moments. A Curie-Weiss temperature ΘCW=-26 ± 1 K indicated that antiferromagnetic interactions were dominant. Deviation from Curie-Weiss behavior below 100 K signaled the formation of antiferromagnetically correlated clusters. Bifurcation of the zero-fieldcooled and field-cooled magnetizations below 20 K …

Combating Cyberbullying: Emphasizing Education Over Criminalization, Jessica P. Meredith
Combating Cyberbullying: Emphasizing Education Over Criminalization, Jessica P. Meredith
Federal Communications Law Journal
The advent of new technologies such as social media websites like MySpace and Facebook have increased the methods through which bullying takes form and causes harm to children and teenagers. As the public has become more aware of the dangers of this new form of bullying, cyberbullying, legislators have responded by proposing legislation to criminalize this type of behavior with varying degrees of success. This Note explains the problem of cyberbullying and evaluates state and federal legislative efforts to combat the issue through criminalization, then argues that prevention through education will be the most effective solution. Unlike criminalization, educational initiatives …

From One [Expletive] Policy To The Next: The Fcc's Regulation Of "Fleeting Expletives" And The Supreme Court's Response, Brandon J. Almas
Federal Communications Law Journal
After the broadcast of the 2003 Golden Globe Awards, during which the lead singer from U2 uttered an expletive on national television, the FCC revisited its prior policy on the use of expletives on the airwaves and declared, for the first time, that "fleeting expletives" are offensive according to community standards and are therefore finable. In a lawsuit filed in the Second Circuit Court of Appeals, Fox Television Stations, Inc. along with a number of other broadcasters argued that the FCC's new policy was arbitrary and capricious under the Administrative Procedure Act and unconstitutional under the First Amendment. The Second …
Examining The Fcc's Indecency Regulations In Light Of Today's Technology, Elizabeth H. Steele
Examining The Fcc's Indecency Regulations In Light Of Today's Technology, Elizabeth H. Steele
Federal Communications Law Journal
Indecency regulations promulgated by the FCC used to be effective, but today's technological advances call those regulations into question. With the prevalence of digital video recorders and the availability of television shows on the Internet, children have unprecedented access to material broadcast at all times of day. As a result, the "safe harbor" rationale restricting the broadcast of indecent material no longer makes sense. A move toward deregulation is the most logical step to take, as it would prevent any First Amendment violations and would allow the networks freedom to broadcast material that the public may be interested in without …
Art Out Of Tragedy - How The Children Of Terezin Coped With Crisis Through Art, James A. Kaiser
Art Out Of Tragedy - How The Children Of Terezin Coped With Crisis Through Art, James A. Kaiser
Master's Theses
This thesis is the culmination of the two-year process of researching, lesson planning, rehearsing and producing the Celeste Raspanti play, I Never Saw Another Butterfly, as a staged production with high school students. As the teacher and director, my guiding questions for this process were: Does creating a work of art have a psychological benefit for a child who has or will face a crisis? Does the process of creation help them cope better with the outcome of the crisis? What gave these children the will to survive in such terrible conditions day after day? Will the study of the …

Applications Of Site-Specific Recombination Systems In Transgene Expression And Marker Gene Removal, Mehmet Aydin Akbudak
Applications Of Site-Specific Recombination Systems In Transgene Expression And Marker Gene Removal, Mehmet Aydin Akbudak
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Site Specific Recombination systems, such as FLP-FRT and Cre-lox, have been successfully used for site-specific gene integration and marker-gene deletion in plant systems. They are very useful tools in the integration of single-copy full-length transgene cassettes into the genome because the transgene integration via conventional methods often generate multi-copy locus. Such complex locus containing direct and inverted repeats of full-length and truncated copies of the transgene cassette generate aberrant RNA resulting in gene silencing. Therefore, for stable gene expression, a single copy transgene locus is preferred. However, even single copy locus sometimes succumbs to gene silencing. Although the mechanism is …
A Methodology For Implementing Rf Bists In Production Testing To Replace Rf Conventional Tests, Deepa Mannath
A Methodology For Implementing Rf Bists In Production Testing To Replace Rf Conventional Tests, Deepa Mannath
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Production testing of Radio Frequency (RF) devices is challenging due to the complex nature of the tests that have to be performed to verify functionality. In this dissertation a methodology to replace the complex and expensive RF functional tests with defect-oriented Built-in Self Tests (BiSTs) is detailed. If a design has sufficient margin to RF specifications then RF tests can be replaced with structural tests using a new data analysis technique called quadrant analysis, which is presented. Data from the analysis of over one million production units of said System on Chip (SoC) is presented along with the results of …
