Deliberative Democracy On The Air: Reinvigorate Localism-Resuscitate Radio's Subversive Past, Akilah N. Folami
Federal Communications Law Journal
There has been considerable scholarship exploring the need to breathe deliberative life back into the localism standard by requiring broadcasters to include more meaningful local news and public affairs programming, pursuant to the public interest obligations imposed on radio licensees. There has been little scholarly attention, if any, however given to broadening understandings of localism to include music and popular cultural expression for the purpose of furthering deliberative discourse in particular, rather than solely for entertainment purposes. This Article focuses on a particular moment in radio and America's cultural history that was rife with struggles over constructions of identity, and …
Pacifica Reconsidered: Implications For The Current Controversy Over Broadcast Indecency, Angela J. Campbell
Pacifica Reconsidered: Implications For The Current Controversy Over Broadcast Indecency, Angela J. Campbell
Federal Communications Law Journal
In 2009, the Supreme Court upheld the FCC's finding in Fox TV Stations v. Federal Communications Commission that the broadcast of "fleeting expletives" violated a federal law prohibiting the broadcast of indecency, but remanded the case for consideration of the broadcast networks' claims that the FCC action violated the First Amendment. On remand, the Second Circuit found that the FCC's prohibition against "fleeting expletives" was unconstitutionally vague. It is widely expected that the Supreme Court will review this decision and that the networks will ask the Court to reconsider its 1978 decision in Pacifica Foundation v. Federal Communications Commission. This …
American Law: Integrating Ultra-Traditional Muslims Through Accommodations, Mohamed A. Elsanousi
American Law: Integrating Ultra-Traditional Muslims Through Accommodations, Mohamed A. Elsanousi
Maurer Theses and Dissertations
Appropriate legal accommodations for religious minorities can support their integration into American society. Historically, the teachings and practices of many religious communities that have otherwise conflicted with state or federal law have been successfully preserved through legal accommodations. A brief comparison with the experiences of such groups as the Hasidic Jewish community will provide a context for religiously based legal accommodations for various religious communities within the United States.
This dissertation examines the particular situation of a Tablighi Jamaat community, a Muslim missionary movement, as a means to explore how legal accommodations facilitate the successful, stable integration of such groups. …

ABSTRACT Dunning, Wesley Garret. MFA. The University of Memphis. December 2010. Rooted Down. Major Professor: John Bensko. These poems recall a forgotten place—the old Buntyn neighborhood in Memphis and its outlying country, filled with ancient oaks, gospel songs, chattering bluebirds, but also the dilapidated row homes and overgrown grasses of a town nearly dead. It’s the town of my grandparents, here modeled in Nelda and Wyatt, their grandson Clay, old neighbors and friends from Marston Drive, and three generations of family, whose histories have crawled somewhere inside me and made themselves at home. These poems examine the distances between familial relationships. …

Synthetic Studies Of 2-Acetoxyfuran And 2(3h)-Furanone As Pronucleophiles In The Asymmetric Synthesis Of Butenolides, Stephen James Howard
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Enantioselective synthesis of γ-substituted butenolides is desirable due to the prevalence of these functionalities in medicinally important natural products. As organic synthons, butenolides contain four carbon atoms, each of which is capable of undergoing regioselective modification. Two complementary approaches for the construction of γ-substituted butenolides have been developed in the present work. The trapped dienolate, 2-acetoxyfuran, couples with aldehydes under mild conditions with diastereocontrol determined by the nature of catalyst, solvent, and temperature employed. An even more efficient synthesis of the butenolide architecture has been developed by the direct coupling of 2(3H)-furanone to aldehydes. Enantioselectivity is afforded by use of Takemoto's …
Variations In The Seismic Quality Factor Q For The Mississippi Embayment Sediments Utilizing Spectral Analysis Of Reflection Data, Michael Wilson Towle
Variations In The Seismic Quality Factor Q For The Mississippi Embayment Sediments Utilizing Spectral Analysis Of Reflection Data, Michael Wilson Towle
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
A natural log spectral ratio technique is used to calculate Qp for the post-Paleozoic, unconsolidated sediments of the northern Mississippi Embayment. The method is applied to high-resolution marine seismic reflection data acquired along the Mississippi River. The method assumes a frequency independent Q over a certain frequency band. The frequency bands inspected range from 10-150 Hz and 10-200 Hz based on observed linear trends in the spectral ratio data. The large volume of data available allows for increased accuracy in Q estimates. Values of Qs are then approximated using an empirical Qp/Qs relationship for the embayment. Results show that average …

The Chestershaw: The Views And Ideas That Shaped The Friendly Rivalry Of G.K. Chesterton And George Bernard Shaw, Jonathan Vowell
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
G.K. Chesterton and George Bernard Shaw both lived at the turn of the twentieth century, which was a time of incredible social and philosophic change and upheaval. In reaction to the social chaos and uncertainty, both men sought to change the world through their artistic and polemical works and thus were friends, yet both men wanted to change the world into different things for different reasons and thus were enemies. Their intellectual, friendly rivalry was a hallmark of early twentieth-century public discourse and English letters. Unfortunately, while their artistic contributions remain, most of their intellectual contributions have been either misunderstood …

"The Young Blood Hungers": Mapping Young Black Manhood In Marita Bonner's Frye Street Fiction, Rachel Leigh Smith
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Marita O. Bonner, early twentieth century African American public intellectual and creative writer, wrote particularly about the experiences of blacks in Chicago. Though most Bonner scholarship focuses primarily on her working class female characters, this study provides close readings of the young male figures in the short stories, "One Boy's Story," "The Makin's," "The Whipping," "There Were Three," "Tin Can," and "Nothing New." I analyze how these texts confront notions of family, personal identity, and violence, and how Bonner configures young life as a volatile liminal space of human development. As seen in Bonner's short stories and in her essay …

"They Were Her Daughters:" Women And Grassroots Organizing For Social Justice In The Arkansas Delta, 1870-1970, Jayme Millsap Stone
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
The Arkansas Delta has a rich history of struggle and resistance, however, little is known about how local people organized for social justice. The widely-held belief is that black, male church pastors defined civil rights issues in their communities and led the people to action when they believed it was appropriate. This study is a corrective for this assumption and illustrates how black women--activist mothers--used the churches and African American religion as launching points for activist activities that they deemed critical to survival. As grassroots caretakers of the black community, local personalities---as teachers and tenant farmers, as club women, race …

The suprachiasmatic nuclei (SCN), the principal mammalian circadian oscillator, contain several thousand clock neurons that oscillate spontaneously with ~24-hour periods in its ventrolateral region. Without light, this network synchronizes through action potentials releasing VIP, compromising on a free-running period near 24 hours. We entrained Siberian hamsters to various light-dark cycles and tracked their activity into constant darkness showing that they retain memory for a particular light-dark cycle to which they were entrained before returning to their own free-running period. Using Leloup-Goldbeter mammalian clock neurons, we model the ventrolateral SCN network and show that light acting weakly upon a strongly rhythmic …
