Feedback Control Of A Bioinspired Plate-Beam System, Cody W. Ray, Belinda A. Batten, John R. Singler Dec 2010

Feedback Control Of A Bioinspired Plate-Beam System, Cody W. Ray, Belinda A. Batten, John R. Singler

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Research & Creative Works

In this paper we present a model for a plate-beam system to represent a bioinspired flexible wing. Using a Galerkin based finite element approximation to the system, we compute functional gains that can be used for sensor placement and show that a piezoceramic actuator on the beam can be used for camber control

Lateral Blood Flow Velocity Estimation Based On Ultrasound Speckle Size Change With Scan Velocity, Tiantian Xu, Gregory R. Bashford Dec 2010

Lateral Blood Flow Velocity Estimation Based On Ultrasound Speckle Size Change With Scan Velocity, Tiantian Xu, Gregory R. Bashford

Biomedical Imaging and Biosignal Analysis Laboratory

Conventional (Doppler-based) blood flow velocity measurement methods using ultrasound are capable of resolving the axial component (i.e., that aligned with the ultrasound propagation direction) of the blood flow velocity vector. However, these methods are incapable of detecting blood flow in the direction normal to the ultrasound beam. In addition, these methods require repeated pulse-echo interrogation at the same spatial location. A new method has been introduced which estimates the lateral component of blood flow within a single image frame using the observation that the speckle pattern corresponding to blood reflectors (typically red blood cells) stretches (i.e., is smeared) if the …

The Green, Blue And Grey Water Footprint Of Farm Animals And Animal Products. Volume 1: Main Report, Mesfin Mekonnen, Arjen Y. Hoekstra Dec 2010

The Green, Blue And Grey Water Footprint Of Farm Animals And Animal Products. Volume 1: Main Report, Mesfin Mekonnen, Arjen Y. Hoekstra

Daugherty Water for Food Global Institute: Faculty Publications

The projected increase in the production and consumption of animal products is likely to put further pressure on the globe’s freshwater resources. The size and characteristics of the water footprint vary across animal types and production systems. The current study provides a comprehensive account of the global green, blue and grey water footprints of different sorts of farm animals and animal products, distinguishing between different production systems and considering the conditions in all countries of the world separately. The following animal categories were considered: beef cattle, dairy cattle, pig, sheep, goat, broiler chicken, layer chicken and horses. The study shows …

On Relativistic Disk Spectroscopy In Compact Objects With X-Ray Ccd Cameras, J. M. Miller, A. D'Aì, M. W. Bautz, S. Bhattacharyya, D. N. Burrows, E. M. Cackett, A. C. Fabian, M. J. Freyberg, F. Haberl, J. Kennea, M. A. Nowak, R. C. Reis, T. E. Strohmayer, M. Tsujimoto

Physics and Astronomy Faculty Research Publications

X-ray charge-coupled devices (CCDs) are the workhorse detectors of modern X-ray astronomy. Typically covering the 0.3-10.0 keV energy range, CCDs are able to detect photoelectric absorption edges and K shell lines from most abundant metals. New CCDs also offer resolutions of 30-50 (E/ΔE), which is sufficient to detect lines in hot plasmas and to resolve many lines shaped by dynamical processes in accretion flows. The spectral capabilities of X-ray CCDs have been particularly important in detecting relativistic emission lines from the inner disks around accreting neutron stars and black holes. One drawback of X-ray CCDs is that spectra can be …

Wen-Wu In Counseling With Men, Travis W. Schermer Dec 2010

Wen-Wu In Counseling With Men, Travis W. Schermer

Michigan Journal of Counseling: Research, Theory and Practice

Wen-wu is a Chinese conceptualization of masculinity that strikes a balance between wen (i.e., literary strength) and wu (i.e., physical strength). This concept can be readily applied to a mental health setting when working with male clients. The present treatise outlines the concept of wen-wu and provides suggestions for use in clinical work. Applying this concept in counseling promotes the construction of wellness plans and facilitates discussions about masculinity.

Ojos Claros, Roberto E. Bahruth Dec 2010

Ojos Claros, Roberto E. Bahruth

Literacy, Language, and Culture Faculty Publications and Presentations

Literacy, Language, and Culture Faculty Publications and Presentations
