Source Attribution Of Ozone In Southeast Texas Before And After The Deepwater Horizon Accident Using Satellite, Sonde, Surface Monitor, And Air Mass Trajectory Data, Gary A. Morris, Barry Lefer, Bernhard Rappenglueck, Christine Haman, Marc Taylor, Mark R. Schoeberl Dec 2010

Schoeberl

Physics and Astronomy Faculty Presentations

Since the summer of 2004, over 300 ozonesondes have been launched from Rice University (29.7 N, 95.4 W) or the University of Houston (29.7 N, 95.3 W), each < 5 km from downtown Houston. The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality maintains a large database of hourly surface ozone observations in Southeast Texas. In this study, we identify the contributions to surface ozone pollution levels from natural and anthropogenic sources, both local and remote in nature. This source identification is performed two ways: 1) through an analysis of sonde data, including ozone concentrations, wind speed and direction, and relative humidity data, and 2) through an analysis that combines trajectory calculations with surface monitor data. We also examine regional changes in Ozone Monitoring Instrument (OMI) measurements of formaldehyde and ozone from 2004 – 2010. In particular, we compare the 2010 sonde, surface monitor, and satellite data after the Deepwater Horizon accident with data from previous years to determine the impact, if any, of the large source of hydrocarbons in the Gulf of Mexico on air quality in Southeast Texas.

The Human Population Growth And Its Ecological Consequences On Kenya And Tanzania, Lauren Noll Dec 2010

The Human Population Growth And Its Ecological Consequences On Kenya And Tanzania, Lauren Noll

Student Theses 2001-2013

The world population is growing at an alarming rate. The rapid growth in population numbers and density along with the steady increase in the rates are causing issues in many countries. Although every country is experiencing many consequences of the growth, the countries of Kenya and Tanzania in East Africa seem to be suffering immensely. Not only does the increasing human population in these third world countries create an overarching competition for natural resources such as food, water, and land, the growth also has detrimental effects on the surrounding environment, wildlife populations, ecotourism, and traditional African cultures.

Middle Cerebral Artery Occlusion Model In Rodents: Methods And Potential Pitfalls, Fudong Liu, Louise D. Mccullough Dec 2010

Middle Cerebral Artery Occlusion Model In Rodents: Methods And Potential Pitfalls, Fudong Liu, Louise D. Mccullough

UCHC Articles - Research

A variety of animal models have been developed for modeling ischemic stroke. The middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO) model has been utilized extensively, especially in rodents. While the MCAO model provides stroke researchers with an excellent platform to investigate the disease, controversial or even paradoxical results are occasionally seen in the literature utilizing this model. Various factors exert important effects on the outcome in this stroke model, including the age and sex of the animal examined. This paper discusses emerging information on the effects of age and sex on ischemic outcomes after MCAO, with an emphasis on mouse models of …

College of Natural and Applied Sciences

We present the discovery of non-radial pulsations in a hot subdwarf B star based on 30.5 d of nearly continuous time series photometry using the Kepler spacecraft. KIC-010139564 is found to be a short-period pulsator of the V361-Hya (EC-14026) class with more than 10 independent pulsation modes whose periods range from 130 to 190 s. It also shows one periodicity at a period of 3165 s. If this periodicity is a high-order g-mode, then this star may be the hottest member of the hybrid DW-Lyn stars. In addition to the resolved pulsation frequencies, additional periodic variations in the light curve …

College of Natural and Applied Sciences

The survey phase of the Kepler Mission includes a number of hot subdwarf B (sdB) stars to search for non-radial pulsations. We present our analysis of two sdB stars that are found to be g-mode pulsators of the V1093-Her class. These two stars also display the distinct irradiation effect typical of sdB stars with a close M-dwarf companion with orbital periods of less than half a day. Because the orbital period is so short, the stars should be in synchronous rotation, and if so, the rotation period should imprint itself on the multiplet structure of the pulsations. However, we do …

College of Natural and Applied Sciences

We present the discovery of non-radial pulsations in five hot subdwarf B (sdB) stars based on 27-d of nearly continuous time series photometry using the Kepler spacecraft. We find that every sdB star cooler than ≈27-500-K that Kepler has observed (seven so far) is a long-period pulsator of the V1093 Her (PG 1716) class or a hybrid star with both short and long periods. The apparently non-binary long-period and hybrid pulsators are described here. The V1093 Her periods range from 1 to 4.5-h and are associated with g-mode pulsations. Three stars also exhibit short periods indicative of p-modes with periods …

Skills Acquired Through Personal Narrative Writing Instruction, Samantha J. Martin

Education Masters

This study was focused on personal narrative writing instruction in the elementary grades. The purpose of this study was to determine the skills that students acquire during personal narrative writing instruction. The study was conducted in a rural fifth grade classroom and included six students of varying ability levels as well as the classroom teacher. samples. Data was collected through classroom observation, interviews, and student work The results of this study suggested that personal narrative writing instruction teaches students how to effectively organize a writing piece, include proper mechanics, vary word choice, and how to edit and revise. Educators need …

Series Books And Their Effect On Reader Development, Dana Randisi

Education Masters

This study was conducted to determine the impact that series books have on developing reading skills and motivation. Data was collected through interviews with three teachers, observations of three secondgraders‟ book choices, and analysis of three different book series. The data showed that book series are widely read across grade levels and are useful in developing comprehension and fluency skills. The study implies that book series can provide many benefits to developing readers, but that it is important to use the appropriate level of book with each reader to prevent higher-level readers from holding themselves back. The research also shows …

How Are Elementary Teachers Utilizing Technology To Enhance Their Instruction Of Literacy In The Classroom?, Alissa B. Hawkins

Education Masters

This study examined how elementary teachers used technology to enhance literacy instruction in the classroom. Research was conducted by observing and interviewing both teachers and students in two classrooms, one a blended 3rd/4th grade classroom and the other a 4th grade classroom, on how technology is utilized in the classroom for literacy instruction. The findings showed the use of technology to be highly beneficial for elementary students. The students demonstrated an increase in motivation, attention and engagement. The benefits provided by technology allow students to participate more fully in the educational opportunities of the 21st century and helped students gain …
