Resource And Bandwidth Allocation In Hybrid Wireless Mobile Networks, Benjamin John Bengfort Jan 2010

Resource And Bandwidth Allocation In Hybrid Wireless Mobile Networks, Benjamin John Bengfort

Computer Science

In the lead up to the implementation of 802.16 and 4G wireless networks, there have been many proposals for addition of multi-hop MANET zones or relay stations in order to cut the cost of building a new backbone infrastructure from the ground up. These types of Hybrid Wireless Networks will certainly be a part of wireless network architecture in the future, and as such, simple problems such as resource allocation must be explored to maximize their potential. This study explores the resource allocation problem in three distinct ways. First, this study highlights two existing backbone architectures: max-coverage and max-resource, and …

A Closed Form Optimization Model For The Conflict Neutralization Problem, Yan Wang Jan 2010

A Closed Form Optimization Model For The Conflict Neutralization Problem, Yan Wang

Computer Science

In this study, we proposed a novel closed form optimization model for the Conflict Neutralization Problem (CKP) and implemented an efficient algorithm for solving the problem. A novel tableau representation of the CNP model was presented and described in detail. We implemented a special structured branch and bound algorithm to solve the problem. Key components of the implementation were described. To test the computation performance of our algorithm, we designed and conducted three sets of experiments. The experiment results were reported and analyzed in this report. The test results showed the efficiency of the algorithm for solving the Conflict Neutralization …

Recruiting Through Identification: Identification Strategies And Tactics Used In External Higher Education Strategic Communication, Dana Raye Anderson Jan 2010

Recruiting Through Identification: Identification Strategies And Tactics Used In External Higher Education Strategic Communication, Dana Raye Anderson

Computer Science

This exploratory study examines higher education strategic communication for identification inducement strategies and tactics using Cheney's (1983) typology as a guiding framework. The study also explores the differences in identification inducement strategies and tactics used between traditional public universities and for-profit online educators. The results of a deductive textual analysis indicate that identification inducement strategies are used in higher education strategic communication designed to recruit students, an external audience with a reverse paid relationship with the organization. A new strategy and two tactics are added to Cheney's typology to fully account for the identification appeals identified.

Outlier Identification In Sensor Network Clock Synchronization, William Davis Voorhees Jan 2010

Outlier Identification In Sensor Network Clock Synchronization, William Davis Voorhees

Computer Science

We first present a survey of clock synchronization research that describes the problem and various challenges to implementing an efficient protocol for clock synchronization in sensor networks. We then present several changes to an existing protocol that we believe will enhance the accuracy. These changes are implemented in a software simulation and a large experiment is conducted that involves several runs of the simulation using various parameters for error bounds and outlier detection. We present our results and show that modifying the outlier detection range used by many existing algorithms can improve network clock accuracy and provide a stabilized average …

Neutralization Of Conflict Areas Using An Ant Colony Heuristic Approach, Pavan Kumar Bapanpally

Computer Science

In this paper, we present a unique approach to solve the Neutralization of Conflict Areas problem using an Ant Colony Optimization technique. The Neutralization of Conflict Areas is a known problem, and over the years, considerable research has been conducted to find strategies [7] to solve the problem. To effectively deal with this kind of problem, many search algorithms and techniques have been proposed. The Ant Colony Optimization technique has been very successful in solving problems such as the travelling salesman problem, vehicle routing problem, and routing and scheduling problems. The suggested approach to the problem presented here is to …

Anonymity And Hostile Node Identification In Wireless Sensor Networks, Phillip Steven Reindl Jan 2010

Anonymity And Hostile Node Identification In Wireless Sensor Networks, Phillip Steven Reindl

Computer Science

In many secure wireless network attack scenarios, the source of a data packet is as sensitive as the data it contains. Existing work to provide source anonymity in wireless sensor networks (WSN) are not frugal in terms of transmission overhead. We present a set of schemes to provide secure source anonymity. As the state of the art in WSN advances, researchers increasingly look to heterogeneous network topologies. We leverage high powered cluster head nodes to further reduce transmission overhead and provide excellent scalability. A significant threat to WSN is the insider attack due to the ease of tampering with low-cost …

Reflections On Substance And Form In The Civil Rights Classroom, Doni Gewirtzman Jan 2010

Reflections On Substance And Form In The Civil Rights Classroom, Doni Gewirtzman

Articles & Chapters

Legal education typically treats substance and form as unrelated entities -- the same pedagogical structure and tools are used regardless of the nature of the course. This Essay attempts to align the way we teach civil rights law with the nature of the subject matter by exploring three central conflicts that touch on both substance and form: the battle between coercion and freedom, the battle between public and private, and the battle between law and love. It argues that while the form of legal education polarizes each of these divides, the substance of civil rights law takes a more ambiguous …

Transfer Students And The Success Of Registration On Degree Completion And Retention, Heather Marie Soleim Jan 2010

Transfer Students And The Success Of Registration On Degree Completion And Retention, Heather Marie Soleim

Education

A transfer student has different needs than a first-year student. For this reason, many four-year institutions have developed orientation and registration programs for transfer students. The transfer orientation and registration programs differ from the traditional programs that a first-year student attends and are potentially designed to meet the wide scale needs of a diverse transfer student population. Have these programs had any effect on the academic success of transfer students? Research on the effectiveness of these programs 1s scarce. The purpose of this study was to determine if attending registration programs developed at North Dakota State University improved degree completion …

Infants’ Discrimination Of Familiar And Unfamiliar Accents In Speech, Caroline Floccia, Jeremy Goslin, Joseph Butler, Robin Panneton Jan 2010

Infants’ Discrimination Of Familiar And Unfamiliar Accents In Speech, Caroline Floccia, Jeremy Goslin, Joseph Butler, Robin Panneton

School of Psychology

This study investigates infants’ discrimination abilities for familiar and unfamiliar regional English accents. Using a variation of the head-turn preference procedure, 5-month-old infants demonstrated that they were able to distinguish between their own South-West English accent and an unfamiliar Welsh English accent. However, this distinction was not seen when two unfamiliar accents (Welsh English and Scottish English) were presented to the infants, indicating they had not acquired the general ability to distinguish between regional varieties, but only the distinction between their home accent and unfamiliar regional variations. This ability was also confirmed with 7-month-olds, challenging recent claims that infants lose …

Visuospatial Tasks Suppress Craving For Cigarettes., Jon May, Jackie Andrade, Nathalie Panabokke, David Kavanagh Jan 2010

Visuospatial Tasks Suppress Craving For Cigarettes., Jon May, Jackie Andrade, Nathalie Panabokke, David Kavanagh

School of Psychology

The Elaborated Intrusion (EI) theory of desire posits that visual imagery plays a key role in craving. We report a series of experiments testing this hypothesis in a drug addiction context. Experiment 1 showed that a mental visual imagery task with neutral content reduced cigarette craving in abstaining smokers, but that an equivalent auditory task did not. The effect of visual imagery was replicated in Experiment 2, which also showed comparable effects of non-imagery visual working memory interference. Experiment 3 showed that the benefit of visual over auditory interference was not dependent upon imagery being used to induce craving. Experiment …

Less Food For Thought. Impact Of Attentional Instructions On Intrusive Thoughts About Snack Foods., Jon May, Jackie Andrade, Helen Batey, Lisa Marie Berry, David J. Kavanagh

School of Psychology

Intrusive thoughts about food may play a role in unhealthy eating behaviours. Food-related thoughts that capture attention can lead to craving and further intrusive thoughts (Kavanagh, Andrade, & May, 2005). We tested whether diverting attention to mental images or bodily sensations would reduce the incidence of intrusive thoughts about snack foods. In two experiments, participants reported their thoughts in response to probes during three 10min periods. In the Baseline and Post-task period, participants were asked to let their mind wander. In the middle, Experimental, period, participants followed mind wandering (Control), thought diversion, or Thought Suppression instructions. Self-directed or Guided Imagery, …

A Review Of Human Factors Principles For The Design And Implementation Of Medication Safety Alerts In Clinical Information Systems., Shobha Phansalkar, Judy Edworthy, Elizabeth Hellier, Diane L. Seger, Angela Schedlbauer, Anthony J. Avery, David W. Bates

School of Psychology

The objective of this review is to describe the implementation of human factors principles for the design of alerts in clinical information systems. First, we conduct a review of alarm systems to identify human factors principles that are employed in the design and implementation of alerts. Second, we review the medical informatics literature to provide examples of the implementation of human factors principles in current clinical information systems using alerts to provide medication decision support. Last, we suggest actionable recommendations for delivering effective clinical decision support using alerts. A review of studies from the medical informatics literature suggests that many …

Negative Intrusive Thoughts And Dissociation As Risk Factors For Self-Harm., Helen Batey, Jon May, Jackie Andrade Jan 2010

Negative Intrusive Thoughts And Dissociation As Risk Factors For Self-Harm., Helen Batey, Jon May, Jackie Andrade

School of Psychology

Relationships between self-harm and vulnerability factors were studied in a general population of 432 participants, of whom 30% reported some experience of self-harm. This group scored higher on dissociation and childhood trauma, had lower self-worth, and reported more negative intrusive thoughts. Among the non-harming group, 10% scored similarly to the self-harmers on the dissociation and self-worth scales, and engaged in potentially maladaptive behaviors that are not defined as indicating clinical self-harm, but experienced fewer negative intrusive thoughts. This group may be at risk of future self-harm if they begin to experience negative intrusive thoughts. If negative intrusive thoughts are playing …
