Computer Forensic Functions Testing: Media Preparation, Write Protection And Verification, Yinghua Guo, Jill Slay Jan 2010

Computer Forensic Functions Testing: Media Preparation, Write Protection And Verification, Yinghua Guo, Jill Slay

Journal of Digital Forensics, Security and Law

The growth in the computer forensic field has created a demand for new software (or increased functionality to existing software) and a means to verify that this software is truly forensic i.e. capable of meeting the requirements of the trier of fact. In this work, we review our previous work---a function oriented testing framework for validation and verification of computer forensic tools. This framework consists of three parts: function mapping, requirements specification and reference set development. Through function mapping, we give a scientific and systemized description of the fundamentals of computer forensic discipline, i.e. what functions are needed in the …

Clustering Spam Domains And Destination Websites: Digital Forensics With Data Mining, Chun Wei, Alan Sprague, Gary Warner, Anthony Skjellum Jan 2010

Clustering Spam Domains And Destination Websites: Digital Forensics With Data Mining, Chun Wei, Alan Sprague, Gary Warner, Anthony Skjellum

Journal of Digital Forensics, Security and Law

Spam related cyber crimes have become a serious threat to society. Current spam research mainly aims to detect spam more effectively. We believe the identification and disruption of the supporting infrastructure used by spammers is a more effective way of stopping spam than filtering. The termination of spam hosts will greatly reduce the profit a spammer can generate and thwart his ability to send more spam. This research proposes an algorithm for clustering spam domains extracted from spam emails based on the hosting IP addresses and tracing the IP addresses over a period of time. The results show that many …

Developing Voip Honeypots: A Preliminary Investigation Into Malfeasant Activity, Craig Valli Jan 2010

Developing Voip Honeypots: A Preliminary Investigation Into Malfeasant Activity, Craig Valli

Journal of Digital Forensics, Security and Law

30 years ago PABX systems were compromised by hackers wanting to make long distance calls at some other entities expense. This activity faded as telephony became cheaper and PABX systems had countermeasures installed to overcome attacks. Now the world has moved onto the provision of telephony via broadband enabled Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) with this service now being provided as a replacement for conventional fixed wire telephony by major telecommunication providers worldwide. Due to increasing bandwidth it is possible for systems to support multiple voice connections simultaneously. The networked nature of the Internet allows for attackers of these VoIP …

Adaptation Of Pyflag To Efficient Analysis Of Seized Computer Data Storage, Aleksander Byrski, Wojciech Stryjewski, Bartłomiej Czechowicz Jan 2010

Adaptation Of Pyflag To Efficient Analysis Of Seized Computer Data Storage, Aleksander Byrski, Wojciech Stryjewski, Bartłomiej Czechowicz

Journal of Digital Forensics, Security and Law

Based on existing software aimed at investigation support in the analysis of computer data storage seized during investigation (PyFlag), an extension is proposed involving the introduction of dedicated components for data identification and filtering. Hash codes for popular software contained in NIST/NSRL database are considered in order to avoid unwanted files while searching and to classify them into several categories. The extension allows for further analysis, e.g. using artificial intelligence methods. The considerations are illustrated by the overview of the system's design.

Avoiding Sanctions At The E-Discovery Meet-And-Confer In Common Law Countries, Milton Luoma, Vicki Luoma Jan 2010

Avoiding Sanctions At The E-Discovery Meet-And-Confer In Common Law Countries, Milton Luoma, Vicki Luoma

Journal of Digital Forensics, Security and Law

The rules of civil procedure in common law countries have been amended to better deal with the requirements of electronic discovery. One of the key changes in case management is the scheduling of a meet-and-confer session where the parties to litigation must meet early in the case before any discovery procedures have begun to exchange information regarding the nature, location, formats, and pertinent facts regarding custody and control of a party’s electronically stored information (ESI). Failure to abide by the rules and participate in good faith at the meet-and-confer session can have dire consequences for the parties and lawyers involved. …

Malware Forensics: Discovery Of The Intent Of Deception, Murray Brand, Craig Valli, Andrew Woodward Jan 2010

Malware Forensics: Discovery Of The Intent Of Deception, Murray Brand, Craig Valli, Andrew Woodward

Journal of Digital Forensics, Security and Law

Malicious software (malware) has a wide variety of analysis avoidance techniques that it can employ to hinder forensic analysis. Although legitimate software can incorporate the same analysis avoidance techniques to provide a measure of protection against reverse engineering and to protect intellectual property, malware invariably makes much greater use of such techniques to make detailed analysis labour intensive and very time consuming. Analysis avoidance techniques are so heavily used by malware that the detection of the use of analysis avoidance techniques could be a very good indicator of the presence of malicious intent. However, there is a tendency for analysis …

This paper introduces the Digital Records Forensics project, a research endeavour located at the University of British Columbia in Canada and aimed at the development of a new science resulting from the integration of digital forensics with diplomatics, archival science, information science and the law of evidence, and of an interdisciplinary graduate degree program, called Digital Records Forensics Studies, directed to professionals working for law enforcement agencies, legal firms, courts, and all kind of institutions and business that require their services. The program anticipates the need for organizations to become “forensically ready,” defined by John Tan as “maximizing the ability …

Solid State Drives: The Beginning Of The End For Current Practice In Digital Forensic Recovery?, Graeme B. Bell, Richard Boddington Jan 2010

Solid State Drives: The Beginning Of The End For Current Practice In Digital Forensic Recovery?, Graeme B. Bell, Richard Boddington

Journal of Digital Forensics, Security and Law

Digital evidence is increasingly relied upon in computer forensic examinations and legal proceedings in the modern courtroom. The primary storage technology used for digital information has remained constant over the last two decades, in the form of the magnetic disc. Consequently, investigative, forensic, and judicial procedures are well-established for magnetic disc storage devices (Carrier, 2005). However, a paradigm shift has taken place in technology storage and complex, transistor-based devices for primary storage are now increasingly common. Most people are aware of the transition from portable magnetic floppy discs to portable USB transistor flash devices, yet the transition from magnetic hard …

Mitigating Online Survey Nonresponse Error In Aviation Research, David Carl Ison Jan 2010

Mitigating Online Survey Nonresponse Error In Aviation Research, David Carl Ison

Journal of Aviation/Aerospace Education & Research

As aviation researchers increasingly rely on online and email based methods of inquiry, it has become ever more necessary to identify the best practices in avoiding the blockage of research-oriented emails by spam filtration software. This study investigated the available literature on the use of email to distribute research surveys. Although data was available on how to and why to conduct research online, the literature lacked information on potential problems associated with the use of email in the conduct of such research. Evidence on how to avoid spam filtration was provided by the ex post facto findings of a study …

General Aviation Security: A Safety Management System Model For Collegiate Learning, William B. Rankin Ii Jan 2010

General Aviation Security: A Safety Management System Model For Collegiate Learning, William B. Rankin Ii

Journal of Aviation/Aerospace Education & Research

A well constructed plan-do-check-act (PDCA) tool, in the context of a Safety Management System (SMS), and incorporating a structured field survey, can help students prepare for real-world problems, situations and crises in general aviation (GA) security by providing an actual professional environment to study. Thus, through the examination of an actual GA airport, students are given the opportunity to work issues through the trials, tribulations, experiences, and research findings of others. In this paper all the elements of GA airport security plan are analyzed at the collegiate level. It is suggested that this PDCA tool be implemented as a SMS …

Book Review: Digital Forensic Evidence Examination (2nd Ed.), Gary C. Kessler Jan 2010

Book Review: Digital Forensic Evidence Examination (2nd Ed.), Gary C. Kessler

Journal of Digital Forensics, Security and Law

On the day that I sat down to start to write this review, the following e-mail came across on one of my lists: Person A and Person B write back and forth and create an email thread. Person A then forwards the email to Person C, but changes some wording in the email exchange between A & B. What is the easiest way (and is it even possible) to find out when that earlier email message was altered before sent to Person C? Before you try to answer these questions, read Fred Cohen's Digital Forensic Evidence Examination. His book won't …

Wavenumber Spectrum In The Gulf Stream From Shipboard Adcp Observations And Comparison With Altimetry Measurements, Dong-Ping Wang, Charles N. Flagg, Kathleen A. Donohue, Hans Thomas Rossby Jan 2010

Wavenumber Spectrum In The Gulf Stream From Shipboard Adcp Observations And Comparison With Altimetry Measurements, Dong-Ping Wang, Charles N. Flagg, Kathleen A. Donohue, Hans Thomas Rossby

Graduate School of Oceanography Faculty Publications

The wavenumber spectra for velocity and temperature in the Gulf Stream region are calculated from a decade (1994–2004) of shipboard acoustic Doppler current profiler (ADCP) measurements taken as part of the Oleander Project. The velocity and temperature spectra have comparable magnitude, in terms of the kinetic and potential energy, and both indicate a k−3 slope in the mesoscales. In contrast, the corresponding velocity spectrum determined from satellite altimetry sea surface heights yields a significantly higher energy level and a k−2 slope. The discrepancy between altimeter-derived and directly measured velocity spectra suggests that altimetric velocity probably is contaminated by …

Identifying A Computer Forensics Expert: A Study To Measure The Characteristics Of Forensic Computer Examiners, Gregory H. Carlton, Reginald Worthley Jan 2010

Identifying A Computer Forensics Expert: A Study To Measure The Characteristics Of Forensic Computer Examiners, Gregory H. Carlton, Reginald Worthley

Journal of Digital Forensics, Security and Law

The usage of digital evidence from electronic devices has been rapidly expanding within litigation, and along with this increased usage, the reliance upon forensic computer examiners to acquire, analyze, and report upon this evidence is also rapidly growing. This growing demand for forensic computer examiners raises questions concerning the selection of individuals qualified to perform this work. While courts have mechanisms for qualifying witnesses that provide testimony based on scientific data, such as digital data, the qualifying criteria covers a wide variety of characteristics including, education, experience, training, professional certifications, or other special skills. In this study, we compare task …

Transformation Of An Agulhas Eddy Near The Continental Slope, S. Baker-Yeboah, G. R. Flieri, Georgi G. Sutyrin, Y. Zhang Jan 2010

Transformation Of An Agulhas Eddy Near The Continental Slope, S. Baker-Yeboah, G. R. Flieri, Georgi G. Sutyrin, Y. Zhang

Graduate School of Oceanography Faculty Publications

The transformation of Agulhas eddies near the continental slope of southern Africa and their subsequent self-propagation are analyzed in both observational data and numerical simulations. Self-propagation results from a net dipole moment of a generalized heton structure consisting of a surface-intensified anticyclonic eddy and deep cyclonic pattern. Such Agulhas vortical structures can form near the retroflection region and further north along the western coast of southern Africa. We analyze nonlinear topographic wave generation, vortex deformations, and filament production as an important part in water mass exchange. Self-propagating structures provide a conduit for exchange between the deep ocean and shelf regions …

Seasonal Distribution Of Dissolved Inorganic Carbon And Net Community Production On The Bering Sea Shelf, J. T. Mathis, J. N. Cross, N. R. Bates, S. Bradley Moran, M. W. Lomas, C. W. Mordy, P. J. Stabeno Jan 2010

Seasonal Distribution Of Dissolved Inorganic Carbon And Net Community Production On The Bering Sea Shelf, J. T. Mathis, J. N. Cross, N. R. Bates, S. Bradley Moran, M. W. Lomas, C. W. Mordy, P. J. Stabeno

Graduate School of Oceanography Faculty Publications

In order to assess the current state of net community production (NCP) in the southeastern Bering Sea, we measured the spatio-temporal distribution and controls on dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) concentrations in spring and summer of 2008 across six shelf domains defined by differing biogeochemical characteristics. DIC concentrations were tightly coupled to salinity in spring and ranged from ~1900 μmoles kg−1 over the inner shelf to ~2400 μmoles kg−1 in the deeper waters of the Bering Sea. In summer, DIC concentrations were lower due to dilution from sea ice melt, terrestrial inputs, and primary production. Concentrations were found to …

Risk And Farmers' Decisions To Farm Organically: The Case Of Devon (Uk), Saer Lssa Barhoum Jan 2010

Risk And Farmers' Decisions To Farm Organically: The Case Of Devon (Uk), Saer Lssa Barhoum

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences Theses

Over the past few decades, the organic sector in most developed countries has flourished. Growth in the sector has been paralleled by a substantial amount of research on several arenas (sec Cobb et al. 1999; Robles et al. 2005; Jackson and Lampkin 2008; Lobley et al. 2009c; among others). Reasons for adopting organic farming have been studied in a variety of instances (Padel 2001a). Although there is a considerable body of evidence that supports the distinctly 'risky nature' of organic farming, our identification and understanding of how this nature affects farmers' decisions whether or not to farm organically are limited …

The Partnership Approach To Environmental Governance: The Case Of The Moor Trees Partnership Network, Clive Bastin Jan 2010

The Partnership Approach To Environmental Governance: The Case Of The Moor Trees Partnership Network, Clive Bastin

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences Theses

Academic discussion of policy-making and governing indicates a significant shift in the model of governance away from top-down state control to the bottom-up approach of engaging non-state actors (Goodwin and Painter, 1996; Jessop, 1998; Stoker, 1993, 1998). Central to governance theory are new forms of policy organisation, in effect, a shift from state monopoly of decision-making towards partnering with non-state (and, therefore, non-elected) actors for the formulation and delivery of sustainability objectives. It is argued that these partnerships are a key aspect of governance, which, in turn has become one of the main themes in environmental politics (Imrie and Raco, …

Accumulation Of Platinum Group Elements By The Marine Microalga, Chlorella Stigmatophora, Leyla Shams Jan 2010

Accumulation Of Platinum Group Elements By The Marine Microalga, Chlorella Stigmatophora, Leyla Shams

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences Theses

Very little information exists on the marine biogeochemistry of Rh, Pd and Pt, or the platinum group elements (PGE), an emerging group of contaminants whose principal emissions are associated with the abrasion of the catalytic converter in motor vehicles and chemotherapy drugs discharged in hospital wastes. In this study, Rh(III), Pd(II) and Pt(IV) were added individually and in combination to cultures of the marine microalga, Chlorella stigmatophora, maintained in coastal seawater at 15oC and under fluorescence lighting both in the presence and absence of trace nutrients (e.g. Fe, Co, Zn and EDTA). The accumulation of PGE was established under varying …

Cap And Trade': Reducing Carbon Emissions And The Climate Change Act 2008, Megan Phillips Jan 2010

Cap And Trade': Reducing Carbon Emissions And The Climate Change Act 2008, Megan Phillips

The Plymouth Law and Criminal Justice Review

The Climate Change Act 2008 came into force on the 26th November 2008 with the aim of establishing effective regulatory mechanisms to limit the UK's carbon emissions and to mitigate the effects of climate change. The Act effectively introduces two elements into the legal system for reducing the UK's net carbon emissions. First, the legislation enacts measures to mitigate the current damage made to the climate, by introducing carbon reduction commitments and setting targets for industry sectors. Second, it enables the Secretary of State to adapt policies according to the progress of the system, information for which will be provided …

Challenging Compulsory Admission To Hospital Under The Mental Health Act 1983, Harry Perrin Jan 2010

Challenging Compulsory Admission To Hospital Under The Mental Health Act 1983, Harry Perrin

The Plymouth Law and Criminal Justice Review

The Mental Health Act 1983 provides for compulsory admission to hospital, under criteria designed to ensure individuals are not detained wrongly. This article examines the primary legal means by which compulsory admission can be challenged. Habeas corpus and judicial review offer means of examining the legality of a decision, based on the decision-making procedure. The efficacy of these mechanisms in mental health cases has come under scrutiny from the European Court of Human Rights. The Mental Health Review Tribunal conversely is equipped to examine legality based on the merits of the decision. The potential for conflict here, however, lies in …

The Concept Of Consent Under The Sexual Offences Act 2003, Jacqueline Scott Jan 2010

The Concept Of Consent Under The Sexual Offences Act 2003, Jacqueline Scott

The Plymouth Law and Criminal Justice Review

The concept of consent is fundamental in considering the crime of rape under the Sexual Offences Act 2003 (SOA). Consent was placed on a statutory footing for the first time by the SOA which defines consent alongside evidential and conclusive presumptions under sections 74-76, respectively. This article explores the position that unfortunately, neither significant clarity nor enhanced protection appears to have been embraced or achieved by the incorporation of consent.

Gender Based Crimes At The International Court, Sophie O'Connell Jan 2010

Gender Based Crimes At The International Court, Sophie O'Connell

The Plymouth Law and Criminal Justice Review

The International Criminal Court (ICC) was established in 2002 and its Statute (Rome Statute1 ) was heralded as an advanced enumeration of gender based crimes. However, in the three cases before the Court in which charges have been confirmed: The Prosecutor v Thomas Lubanga Dyilo2 (Lubanga), The Prosecutor v Germain Katanga and Mathieu Ngudjolo Chii 3 (Katanga and Ngudjolo) and The Prosecutor v Jean-Pierre Bemba Gombo4 (Bemba) there are either no charges for gender based crimes as in Lubanga5 or the charges are not comprehensive. This article examines why despite the extensive provision in the Rome Statute the ICC is …
