This report provides data on terrorist attacks against public bus transportation targets and serious crimes committed against such targets throughout the world. The data are drawn from the MTI database of attacks on public surface transportation, which is expanded and updated as information becomes available. This analysis is based on the database as of December 17, 2009. Data include the frequency and lethality with which buses, bus stations, and bus stops are attacked; the relationship between fatalities and attacks against bus targets and the relationship between injuries and attacks against those targets; how often, relative to other surface transportation targets, …

Migrations and technological advances in California following World War II, spurred radical changes in the production and development of popular music, most notably rock and roll. California largely lacked the entrenched traditions of the American Northeast, and in many ways its exploding population translated into the growth of a culture built around embracing newer methodologies, whether technological innovations or radical artistic departures. In large part owing to its increasing ethnic diversity during the economic expansion, California was uniquely poised to become a center of incredible postwar dynamism, especially when seen in the production, consumption, and stylistic development of music. In today’s economic climate, capitalism is a central ideology that governs the market world. And this is no exception in the contemporary Japanese animation and comics (anime and manga) industry. Animators and artists have to evolve to meet the demands of the audience who are becoming more intellectually complex. To satisfy these needs, animators and artists have to use more sophisticated linguistic means. Religious believers claim their religions are peaceful and genuine believers are peacekeepers and peacemakers. In substantiating justification to their claim, they very often refer to religious scriptures. Yet, on the contrary, their claim is confronted by an opposite claim: many wars were fought and are being fought in the name of religion; and a great deal of violence can be ascribed to the religious believers. In addition, religious scriptures and history of religions do attest, to a certain extent, permissibility of using physical offence or defence. As cyberspace matures, the international system faces a new challenge in confronting the use of force. Non-State actors continue to grow in importance, gaining the skill and the expertise necessary to wage asymmetric warfare using non-traditional weaponry that can create devastating real-world consequences. The international legal system must adapt to this battleground and provide workable mechanisms to hold aggressive actors accountable for their actions. The International Criminal Court--the only criminal tribunal in the world with global reach--holds significant promise in addressing this threat. The Assembly of State Parties should construct the definition of aggression to include these emerging challenges. By …

In this paper, I adapt one of the pro-hedonist strategies to anti-hedonist ends. Just as some prohedonists insist that Plato’s arguments against hedonism elsewhere do not touch the actual theory found in the Protagoras (again, PH), I argue that the most natural reading of PH is inconsistent with views found in purportedly earlier dialogues (especially the Apology and Crito) as well as in purportedly later dialogues (such as the Gorgias, Phaedo, and Republic). In section 1, I argue that PH focuses entirely on bodily goods and bads.11 Then, in section 2, I argue that this makes the relationship between virtue …

Unruly Bodies: The Rhetorical Domestication Of Twenty-First Century Veterans Of War, Paul Achter

Veterans of wars in Afghanistan and Iraq with visually identifiable injuries possess ‘‘unruly’’ bodies that render the story of war in efficient, emotional terms. The injured veteran’s explicit connection of war with injury motivates state and mainstream news discourse that domesticates veterans’ bodies, managing representations of injured veterans through three dominant strategies. First, dominant discourses invoke veterans’ bodies as metonymy of the nation-state at war*bodily well-being operates as a metonym for both the nation’s health and for the condition of the war. Second, veterans are domesticated by strategic placement in contexts that regulate their range of movement, especially amputees, who …

There are an estimated 300,000 child soldiers around the world. Many children are recruited forcibly; their abduction is a pernicious form of displacement that dramatically affects those stolen and the communities from which they were taken.

The architectural design focuses on the rehabilitation of boy soldiers, integrating many different cultures and beliefs away from the terrors of war, to find peace within themselves and living with caring people. The main focus of the design is to reflect the stages of post conflict trauma to assist the boys to regain a sense of worth and normality. This is done through the …

Spanish and Portuguese ETDs

Right-wing military dictatorships in Latin America during the 1960s-80s governed the citizens of their respective countries by utilizing repressive means to control political opposition and enforce patriarchal values, including heteronormativity. Within that context, some Latin American novels present homosexuals that find supportive alternative places in which to discover and express themselves. This thesis examines two such novels, El beso de la mujer araña (1976) by Manuel Puig and Stella Manhattan (1985) by Silviano Santiago. I argue that the main characters Molina and Eduardo/Stella use the freedom of exile and interior exile (insílio) in order to develop their identities as homosexuals.
