Mediating Post-Conflict Dialogue: The Media's Role In Transitional Justice Processes, Lisa J. Laplante, Kelly Phenicie Jan 2010

Mediating Post-Conflict Dialogue: The Media's Role In Transitional Justice Processes, Lisa J. Laplante, Kelly Phenicie

Marquette Law Review

For many post-conflict countries like Peru, the end of gunfire does not necessarily imply an end to internal conflict. Remaining post-conflict societal friction may even be as threatening to long-lasting peace as the war itself. This situation may be attributed, in part, to the media’s failure to adequately mediate conflicting views of a country’s history—its causes and consequences, its villains and heroes. Certainly, newspapers, radio, and television, as well as the newly emerging micromedia (e.g., e-mail) and middle media (e.g., web logs or “blogs”), reach huge audiences on a daily basis before, during, or after conflict. As primary information sources …

Patent Litigation, Personal Jurisdiction, And The Public Good, Megan M. La Belle Jan 2010

Patent Litigation, Personal Jurisdiction, And The Public Good, Megan M. La Belle

Scholarly Articles

There is consensus among scholars, policymakers, and industry leaders that our patent system currently faces a crisis of confidence as a result of the proliferation of bad patents. For now, validity challenges asserted in litigation – usually as a defense to a claim of patent infringement – serve as the primary gatekeeper of patent quality. When an alleged infringer’s validity challenge is successful, the court invalidates the patent and the intellectual property enters the public domain where anyone may use it. This creates a “public good” which inures to the benefit of society at large. In recent years, scholars have …

Amazigh Legitimacy Through Language In Morocco, Sarah R. Fischer Jan 2010

Amazigh Legitimacy Through Language In Morocco, Sarah R. Fischer

Human Rights & Human Welfare

Contemporary Morocco rests at a geographic and developmental crossroads. Uniquely positioned on the Northwestern tip of Africa, Morocco is a short distance away from continental Europe, cradled between North African tradition and identity, and Western embrace. The landscape is varied: craggy mountains trail into desert oases; cobbled streets of the medina anchor the urban centers; mud homes dot the rural countryside. Obscured from the outside observer, behind the walls of the Imperial cities and between the footpaths of village olive groves, Morocco’s rich and diverse Arab and Amazigh cultures and languages circle one another in a contested dance. Morocco’s identity …

Expressive Things In Adam Bede, Barabar Hardy Jan 2010

Expressive Things In Adam Bede, Barabar Hardy

The George Eliot Review Online, ISSN: 2831-5375

A drop of ink is the first thing in the first sentence of George Eliot's first novel: 'With a single drop of ink for a mirror, the Egyptian sorcerer undertakes to reveal to any chance corner farreaching visions of the past.' Like many objects in Adam Bede, this one is more complicated than first appears. In its generalized imaging of magical creation, ritual and prophesy, it is an invocation, introducing and solemnizing the other object with which it is twinned and compared, the real drop of ink at the end of the author's pen which has actually written this sorcerer's …

Review Of Daniel Deronda Jan 2010

Review Of Daniel Deronda

The George Eliot Review Online, ISSN: 2831-5375

A dramatized version of Daniel Deranda scripted by John Cooper was produced by the Traffic of the Stage Company at the Upstairs at the Gatehouse Theatre in Highgate in May. Directed by Harry Meacher, it had a cast of seventeen actors who between them played forty-one different parts. The audience sat on three sides of the acting area (the floor of which was patterned like a giant roulette wheel) and the actors, when not directly engaged in the action, moved to the edges of this space where they would, when appropriate (i.e., when the scene was a party or some …

The Gilbert & Sullivan Critical Edition And The Full Scores That Never Were, Ronald Broude Jan 2010

The Gilbert & Sullivan Critical Edition And The Full Scores That Never Were, Ronald Broude

Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979–2011)

The critical edition of the “Savoy Operas” of W. S. Gilbert and Arthur Sullivan provides a useful example of the ways in which scholarly editions of performing works can alter important elements of the sources on which they are based. The accepted form for the presentation of a critical edition of an opera is the “full score,” but for no Savoy Opera did a real full score ever exist—nor was one ever intended. The sources closest to full scores were the copying masters that Sullivan prepared for use by copyists extracting parts for performers, but these are skeletons into which …

Editing Sophia Peabody’S Cuba Journal: Travel, Recovery, And Interpretation, Jana L. Argersinger, Cheryl J. Fish

Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979–2011)

Some collaborations are born out of chance encounters. For us, it happened at a recent conference of the Society for the Study of American Women Writers. Having briefly met before on the common ground of studies in nineteenth- century American literature, we said “Hello” and discovered in the space of a five-minute conversation that both of us had our eyes on the early nineteenth- century journal-account of a young New Englander’s rest cure in Cuba. The traveler who authored the journal was Sophia Amelia Peabody (1809–1871), an accomplished visual artist, writer, member of a family that was vitally involved in …

Resistance: Contemporary Architecture:Sustaining Identity 2, Jim Roche Jan 2010

Resistance: Contemporary Architecture:Sustaining Identity 2, Jim Roche

Articles

Economic globalisation has facilitated a glut of ‘spectacle’ works of architecture worldwide that often fail to celebrate the genius loci of places or the divergence of human culture. With the current crisis in world capitalism causing a meltdown in the mad rush to overbuild our physical environment it is pertinent to consider once again that architecture can actually contribute to a broader existential understanding.

A recent one-day conference at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London posited such a proposition. Curated by the Finnish writer and theorist, Juhani Pallasmaa and moderated by Jonathan Glancy, the Architecture and Design Editor of …

Chapter 2 - Imagine The Possibilities: Content Analysis Of An Interracial/Interethnic Communication Course, Doris J. Fields Dr.

The Scholarship of Teaching and Learning at EMU

Communication messages in an Interracial/Interethnic Communication course at a University in the Midwest are the focus of this study. The research interprets and analyzes the use of a weblog as an instrument to study the relationship between communication and race in the classroom. A critical examination of the student’s written communication illustrates the positive impact of dialogue within the classroom. The research examines: 1) The transformational process of ineffective communication to effective communication when discussing racial issues in the classroom, 2) Examines students utilizing a weblog to expand dialogue on communication and race, and 3) The impact racial biases/views have …
