Studies have already detected intensification of precipitation events consistent with climate change projections. Communities may have a window of opportunity to prepare, but information sufficiently quantified and localized to support adaptation programs is sparse: published literature is typically characterized by general resilience building or regional vulnerability studies. The Fourth Assessment Report of the IPCC observed that adaptation can no longer be postponed pending the effective elimination of uncertainty. Methods must be developed that manage residual uncertainty, providing community leaders with decision-support information sufficient for implementing infrastructure adaptation programs. This study developed a local-scale and actionable protocol for maintaining historical risk …

Stability Of Choice In The Honey Bee Nest-Site Selection Process, Andrew L. Nevai, Kevin M. Passino, Parthasarathy Srinivasan Mar 2010

Stability Of Choice In The Honey Bee Nest-Site Selection Process, Andrew L. Nevai, Kevin M. Passino, Parthasarathy Srinivasan

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications

We introduce a pair of compartment models for the honey bee nest-site selection process that lend themselves to analytic methods. The first model represents a swarm of bees deciding whether a site is viable, and the second characterizes its ability to select between two viable sites. We find that the one-site assessment process has two equilibrium states: a disinterested equilibrium (DE) in which the bees show no interest in the site and an interested equilibrium (IE) in which bees show interest. In analogy with epidemic models, we define basic and absolute recruitment numbers (R0R0 and B0B0) as measures of the …

Activation Of P44/42 Mapk Plays A Role In The Tbt-Induced Loss Of Human Natural Killer (Nk) Cell Function, Fred D. Dudimah, Denisha Griffey, Xiaofei Wang, Margaret M. Whalen Mar 2010

Activation Of P44/42 Mapk Plays A Role In The Tbt-Induced Loss Of Human Natural Killer (Nk) Cell Function, Fred D. Dudimah, Denisha Griffey, Xiaofei Wang, Margaret M. Whalen

Chemistry Faculty Research

Natural killer (NK) cells destroy (lyse) tumor cells, virally infected cells, and antibody-coated cells. Previous studies indicated that exposure to the environmental contaminant tributyltin (TBT) decreases the lytic function of NK cells and activates mitogen-activated protein kinases (MAPK), including p44/42 (Aluoch and Whalen Toxicology 209:263–277, 2005). If activation of p44/42 is required for TBT-induced decreases of lytic function, then activation of p44/42 to similar extents by pharmacological agents such as phorbol 12-myristate 13-acetate (PMA) should mimic to some extent changes induced in NK cells with TBT exposures. NK cells were exposed to PMA concentrations between 0.25 and 10 nM for …

Role Of Casein Kinase 1 In The Glucose Sensor-Mediated Signaling Pathway In Yeast, Satish Pasula, Samujjwal Chakraborty, Jae H. Choi, Jeong-Ho Kim

Faculty Publications

Background

In yeast, glucose-dependent degradation of the Mth1 protein, a corepressor of the glucose transporter gene (HXT) repressor Rgt1, is a crucial event enabling expression of several HXT. This event occurs through a signaling pathway that involves the Rgt2 and Snf3 glucose sensors and yeast casein kinase 1 and 2 (Yck1/2). In this study, we examined whether the glucose sensors directly couple with Yck1/2 to convert glucose binding into an intracellular signal that leads to the degradation of Mth1.

Results

High levels of glucose induce degradation of Mth1 through the Rgt2/Snf3 glucose signaling pathway. Fluorescence microscopy analysis …

Influence Of The Surrounding Plants By Rapeseed Field On Population Density Of Cabbage Aphid (Brevicoryne Brassicae L.) And Its Biological Enemies, Basheerah Khudhair Alhasan, Saadi H. Sabr

Baghdad Science Journal

The result revealed that the peak of population density of cabbage aphid Brevicoryne brassicae was 523.20 individuals/plant on 21 March in edges of rapeseed field and was 1141.67 individuals/plant in center of the field. Results revealed that population density of cabbage aphid in rapeseed fields surrounded by cover crops significantly were low compared with that of monoculture rapeseed. The location of rapeseed plants (in edges or in center) significantly affected (p<0.05) the tested pest density, e.g. optimum density was 146.69 individuals/plant in the center of the field. Whereas was 93.32 in the edges. Effect of the interaction between location and surrounding vegetation was significant on aphid density, which their population density reached the maximum level, i.e. 325.4 individuals/ plant in the center of monoculture rapeseed field, Whereas minimum density was recorded, i.e. 46.74 individuals/plant in the rapeseed surrounded by clover. In regard to the population density of parasitoid Diaeretiella rapae, results showed that its density reached 1.70 mummies/ plant in the edges of rapeseed surrounded by onion. This treatment considerably exceeded the rapeseed surrounded by clover and monoculture rapeseed in which parasitoid density counted 0.45&0.60 mummies/ plant respectively. Population density of coccinellids ranged between 0.18 & 0.42 individuals/ plant for the edges or center of the fields of the treatments, without considerable differences between them..

Heavy metal exposure in children has been associated with a variety of physiological and neurological problems. The goal of this study was to utilize proteomics to enhance the understanding of biochemical interactions responsible for the health problems related to lead and mercury exposure at concentrations well below CDC guidelines. Blood plasma and serum samples from 34 children were depleted of their most abundant proteins using antibody-based affinity columns and analyzed using two different methods, LC-MS/MS and 2-D electrophoresis coupled with MALDI-TOF/MS and tandem mass spectrometry. Apolipoprotein E demonstrated an inverse significant association with lead concentrations (average being one microgram/deciliter) as …

Geomorphic Evolution Of The Clark Fork River In Response To The Removal Of Milltown Dam, Douglas John Brinkerhoff, Andrew C. Wilcox Mar 2010

Geomorphic Evolution Of The Clark Fork River In Response To The Removal Of Milltown Dam, Douglas John Brinkerhoff, Andrew C. Wilcox

Clark Fork Symposium Archives

The 2008 breaching of Milltown Dam resulted in base-level lowering of 9 m at the dam site and introduced a pulse of fine reservoir sediment into the gravel and cobble-bedded Clark Fork River. Studies of the geomorphic effects of the dam removal have evaluated the volume of material eroded from the Blackfoot and Clark Fork arms of Milltown reservoir, downstream transport and deposition of that sediment, and resulting changes in channel morphology. These efforts have incorporated bedload and bed-material sampling, surveys of topographic change, and aerial photograph analysis. In the first two years following dam breaching, successive peak flows with …

Copper Exposure-Response Relationships And Their Use In Risk Management Of The Clark Fork River, Mt, Daniel Cain, James Carter, Samuel Luoma Mar 2010

Copper Exposure-Response Relationships And Their Use In Risk Management Of The Clark Fork River, Mt, Daniel Cain, James Carter, Samuel Luoma

Clark Fork Symposium Archives

Remediation of river systems contaminated with mine waste, such as the Clark Fork, is concerned with reducing metal inputs from sources, thereby mitigating exposures to resident species and permitting ecological recovery. This process implies the presence of an exposure and biological response relationship. Identification this relationship within the context of multiple stressors could have utility in critically evaluating risk management plans. We analyzed the response of the benthic macroinvertebrate assemblage to Cu by merging data collected by monitoring programs within the Clark Fork Basin. A correlation matrix identified environmental gradients within the entire dataset (space and time) and these were …

How Stream Biomonitors Reveal Past, Present And Future Metal Trends In The Cf River, Mt, Michelle Hornberger, Marie-Noele Croteau, Daniel Cain, Samuel Luoma

Clark Fork Symposium Archives

Bioaccumulation studies of a resident aquatic organism can provide a direct indicator of bioavailable metal in mine-impacted rivers. This approach is supported by concurrently evaluating bed sediment metal concentrations and water quality data. We examine the effectiveness of mine waste remediation in the Clark Fork River using a resident biomonitor (Hydropsyche spp., O: Trichoptera) and streambed sediment. Over a 19-year period, Cu concentrations declined in both indicators at the two most upstream stations, a pattern coincident with remediation events. Sediment Cu declined at most stations along the 200 km study reach. However, Cu concentrations in Hydropsyche in the …

Status And Distribution Of The Northern River Otter (Lontra Canadensis) In The Upper Clark Fork River Basin, Darin Edward Newton, Kerry R. Foresman Mar 2010

Status And Distribution Of The Northern River Otter (Lontra Canadensis) In The Upper Clark Fork River Basin, Darin Edward Newton, Kerry R. Foresman

Clark Fork Symposium Archives

The State of Montana assessed injuries to natural resources resulting from the actions of ARCO and its predecessors in the 1980s and 1990s. In the final report summarizing injuries, the Northern river otter (Lontra canadensis) was identified as one species greatly impacted by habitat degradation. Recent research by Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks and MFWP trapping records demonstrate that otters have begun to return to the UCFRB, but this population appears markedly less robust than those in other drainages in north - and southwestern Montana. Working cooperatively with MFWP, we are conducting a detailed study documenting the status …

Epizootiology Of The Causative Agent Of Salmonid Whirling Disease In The Rock Creek Drainage: 1998-2008, Willard O. Granath, E. Richard Vincent Mar 2010

Epizootiology Of The Causative Agent Of Salmonid Whirling Disease In The Rock Creek Drainage: 1998-2008, Willard O. Granath, E. Richard Vincent

Clark Fork Symposium Archives

Whirling disease, caused by the myxozoan parasite Myxobolus cerebralis, remains a serious health threat to salmonid fish in the western U.S. Although various aspects of this host-parasite system have been studied, investigations examining the overall epizootiology of whirling disease in an ecosystem are lacking. Therefore, in June 1998, such a study was initiated in the Rock Creek watershed of west central Montana. Parameters examined included assessing the intensity of infection in trout using sentinel cages stationed throughout the drainage and determining the percentage of Tubifex tubifex releasing M. cerebralis at sentinel cage and other localities. Also, habitat and water …
