A Non-Autonomous Second Order Boundary Value Problem On The Half-Line, Gregory S. Spradlin

Publications

By variational arguments, the existence of a solution to a nonautonomous second-order boundary problem on the half-line is proven. The corresponding autonomous problem has no solution, revealing significant differences between the autonomous and the non-autonomous case.

Erosion Impacts From Recreation In The Enchanted Tower Climbing Area, New Mexico, Debby Mandeville Apr 2010

Erosion Impacts From Recreation In The Enchanted Tower Climbing Area, New Mexico, Debby Mandeville

Water Resources Professional Project Reports

There is a threat to the health of watersheds beyond natural occurrences. This threat results from human recreational impacts. There are many ways in which watersheds can be managed and protected to better meet human needs for water, food, and other natural resources, including management of recreational activities, both today and tomorrow. In Thompson Canyon along Forest Road 59A, a rock climbing area has received national and international recognition. It is heavily used during all seasons. The National Forest Service writes, ""This use has had a negative impact on surrounding areas. There are several concerns regarding the Thompson Canyon Rock …

Optimization Algorithms For Functional Deimmunization Of Therapeutic Proteins, Andrew S. Parker, Wei Zheng, Karl E. Griswold, Chris Bailey-Kellogg Apr 2010

Optimization Algorithms For Functional Deimmunization Of Therapeutic Proteins, Andrew S. Parker, Wei Zheng, Karl E. Griswold, Chris Bailey-Kellogg

Dartmouth Scholarship

To develop protein therapeutics from exogenous sources, it is necessary to mitigate the risks of eliciting an anti-biotherapeutic immune response. A key aspect of the response is the recognition and surface display by antigen-presenting cells of epitopes, short peptide fragments derived from the foreign protein. Thus, developing minimal-epitope variants represents a powerful approach to deimmunizing protein therapeutics. Critically, mutations selected to reduce immunogenicity must not interfere with the protein's therapeutic activity.

Temporal Regulation Of The Muscle Gene Cascade By Macho1 And Tbx6 Transcription Factors In Ciona Intestinalis, Jamie E. Kugler, Stefan Gazdoiu, Izumi Oda-Ishii, Yale J. Passamaneck, Albert J. Erives, Anna Di Gregorio Apr 2010

Temporal Regulation Of The Muscle Gene Cascade By Macho1 And Tbx6 Transcription Factors In Ciona Intestinalis, Jamie E. Kugler, Stefan Gazdoiu, Izumi Oda-Ishii, Yale J. Passamaneck, Albert J. Erives, Anna Di Gregorio

Dartmouth Scholarship

For over a century, muscle formation in the ascidian embryo has been representative of 'mosaic' development. The molecular basis of muscle-fate predetermination has been partly elucidated with the discovery of Macho1, a maternal zinc-finger transcription factor necessary and sufficient for primary muscle development, and of its transcriptional intermediaries Tbx6b and Tbx6c. However, the molecular mechanisms by which the maternal information is decoded by cis-regulatory modules (CRMs) associated with muscle transcription factor and structural genes, and the ways by which a seamless transition from maternal to zygotic transcription is ensured, are still mostly unclear. By combining misexpression assays with CRM analyses, …

Seed Dynamics And Seedling Establishment Of Woody Species In The Tropical Savannas Of Central Brazil (Cerrado), Ana A. Salazar Parra Apr 2010

Seed Dynamics And Seedling Establishment Of Woody Species In The Tropical Savannas Of Central Brazil (Cerrado), Ana A. Salazar Parra

Open Access Dissertations

Studies of seed dynamics and seedling establishment at the community level in savanna ecosystems are scant, particularly in the tropical savannas of Central Brazil. The Brazilian savannas (cerrado) have the largest diversity of plant species among Neotropical savannas. Cerrado vegetation exhibits consistent changes in tree density and tree size along shallow topographic gradients. Vegetation types differ from closed savannas with high tree density, and a nearly continuous canopy cover in the uppermost portions, to open savannas with scattered short trees in the low portions of the topographic gradients. Whether or not dynamics of seeds and seedlings of woody species are …

Biological Sciences

Mangrove species are uniquely adapted to tropical and subtropical coasts, and although relatively low in number of species, mangrove forests provide at least US $1.6 billion each year in ecosystem services and support coastal livelihoods worldwide. Globally, mangrove areas are declining rapidly as they are cleared for coastal development and aquaculture and logged for timber and fuel production. Little is known about the effects of mangrove area loss on individual mangrove species and local or regional populations. To address this gap, species-specific information on global distribution, population status, life history traits, and major threats were compiled for each of the …
