Using Polystyrene Beads To Estimate Feeding Selectivity And Potential Energetic Consequences In The Rotifer, Brachionus Plicatilis, Stephen Little, William Jaeckle, Faculty Advisor

John Wesley Powell Student Research Conference

Rotifers are free-swimming aquatic animals that feed by collecting particles through the use of cilia that are arranged around the mouth in two circular whorls. Specimens of Brachionus plicatilis exposed to 6µm and 0.5µm polystyrene beads (together or separately) captured the particles at significantly different rates. Calculation of the Jacob's Selectivity Index (D) revealed a significant selectivity for the larger (6µm) beads, over the smaller (0.5µm) beads (pB. plicatilis revealed that bacteria are not likely a significant energy source. Bacterial concentration ≥ 108 cells/ml (100 x typical values) are necessary for feeding on bacterial to support at least 33% of …

The Potential Effects Of Eggshell Porosity On Brown-Headed Cowbird And Dickcissel Incubation Periods, Brittany Childs, Miranda Kiefer, Given Harper, Faculty Advisor, William Jaeckle, Facutly Advisor, Brian Peer, Faculty Advisor Apr 2010

The Potential Effects Of Eggshell Porosity On Brown-Headed Cowbird And Dickcissel Incubation Periods, Brittany Childs, Miranda Kiefer, Given Harper, Faculty Advisor, William Jaeckle, Facutly Advisor, Brian Peer, Faculty Advisor

John Wesley Powell Student Research Conference

The Brown-headed Cowbird (Molothrus ater) is a brood parasite that lays its eggs in nests of other species; the eggs are incubated and the offspring are then raised by the host. Grasslandnesting Dickcissels (Spiza americana) are commonly parasitized by Cowbirds. Cowbird eggs have been reported to hatch sooner than equivalently-sized host eggs, giving their hatchlings a competitive advantage over host offspring. Our study focused on the hypothesis that the apparent accelerated development of Cowbirds is caused by greater eggshell porosity which allows for increased availability of oxygen during incubation. The mean pore area of Cowbird eggshells …

Uptake And Assimilation Of Dissolved Organic Matter By Bosmina Longirostris (Crustacea: Cladocera), Nikki Preston, William Jaeckle, Faculty Advisor

John Wesley Powell Student Research Conference

A considerable amount of dissolved organic matter (DOM) exists in freshwater environments (5- 40 µ g/mL). However, freshwater invertebrates, including crustaceans, are viewed as incapable of taking up and metabolically utilizing DOM. We evaluated this hypothesis by exposing the freshwater crustacean Bosmina longirostris to labeled proteins and polysaccharides. Individuals readily ingested these materials as evidenced by the presence of molecule-specific labels in the digestive system. Histological examination of specimens exposed to the protein ferritin revealed that the label was in the lumen of the digestive tract but not in the surrounding cells. Digestion in crustaceans is extracellular, and the absence …

If These Men Could Still Talk, Rebecca Damphousse Apr 2010

If These Men Could Still Talk, Rebecca Damphousse

Academic Symposium of Undergraduate Scholarship

For this assignment, two theorists in psychology were selected to engage in conversation. Erik Erikson and Jean Piaget were chosen and their theories of human development were researched. Erikson was asked how his experiences as a child impacted the formation of his theories. The question for Piaget was directed at the permanence, relevancy and universality of his theory into the 21st century. While a large amount of research was conducted, the questions and answers were pure conjecture.

Water Resources Field Methods Reports

This course is the required capstone seminar for Master of Water Resources (MWR) graduate students in the Water Resources Program at the University of New Mexico. Drs. Michael E. Campana (hydrology), Paul Matthews (water law and policy), and David Brookshire (environmental economics) were the instructors. The class focused on three contemporary issues within the Rio Grande basin: 1) arsenic in the waters of the basin, including both the conflict between the City of Albuquerque and Isleta Pueblo over arsenic in the Rio Grande and the impending change in drinking water standards for arsenic; 2) the hydrologic impacts and fire management …

Surface Water Quality Of The Gallinas River In And Around Las Vegas, New Mexico, Ron Amato Apr 2010

Surface Water Quality Of The Gallinas River In And Around Las Vegas, New Mexico, Ron Amato

Water Resources Professional Project Reports

The Gallinas River in north central New Mexico is currently listed on the State 303(d) list of impaired waters for unknown toxicity, ammonia, and stream bottom deposits. Empirical evidence of these problems is manifested as periodic mortality of aquatic organisms and conspicuous amounts of algae. These listings will result in development of one or more Total Maximum Daily Loads (TMDL) if the problems cannot be resolved. To date, research on this river has focused on physical, chemical and biological characterization of specific issues such as hydraulic conductivity and nutrient flux. These dynamics are the underpinnings of a complete understanding of …
