An Analysis Of The Impact Of Intellectual Property Rights On Chinese Students, Bing Yang
An Analysis Of The Impact Of Intellectual Property Rights On Chinese Students, Bing Yang
Masters Theses
This study examined foreign Chinese students' adaptation to American intellectual property rights (IPR) in the perspective of Cognitive Dissonance Theory (CDT). Previous studies focused on historical, legal and cultural difference between China and the U.S., while Chinese students' cognition remained to be explored. Ten Chinese students from both undergraduate and graduate programs with different lengths of staying in the U.S. were interviewed individually, and interview questions were created according to the three stages of CDT. Results showed that Chinese students had eliminated their cognitive dissonances in the U.S., and some demographic and cultural factors that influenced Chinese students' cognition regarding …

Analyzing Collagen Alpha 1(Xi) Using A Zebrafish Model System, Dawn Mikelonis, Ming Fang, Raquel Brown
College of Arts and Sciences Poster Presentations
Zebrafish (Danio rerio) are progressively becoming more popular as a model organism for research. The use of zebrafish is advantageous for several reasons. Zebrafish exhibit high fecundity, and are easy to maintain in large numbers. The embryos produced are transparent, and have fewer cells than many other vertebrates. The embryos develop from a single cell to a small fish within 24 hours, which allows the research process to advance quickly. Also, the existence of the embryo outside of the mother allows for direct access. Using zebrafish as a model organism, the aim of this project is to determine the function …

Long term projects like the Idaho Bird Observatory’s Lucky Peak banding station provide valuable information on bird conservation and life history traits. We explored banding data from 1997-2009 to examine yearly patterns of abundance and survivorship for the 10 most common breeding species. We found that survivorship patterns vary by species. We documented Nashville and Yellow warblers living up to 4 years, while some Dusky Flycatchers, MacGillivray’s Warblers and Chipping Sparrows lived 7 years or more. In fact several Western Tanagers and Dusky Flycatchers exceed or match longevity records in the USGS Bird Banding Lab database. The ratio of hatch …

Trichomycetes, a former class of obligate endosymbiotic fungi, are now recognized as an ecological group that inhabits the gut(s) of immature insects. Though the biodiversity and geographical distribution of trichomycetes are worldwide, our knowledge of the group in the Pacific Northwest is limited due to the few researchers conducting studies on them. Dry Creek drainage in Boise, Idaho was selected in the winter of 2009-10 as a potential site to find gut fungi. This initial survey provides the first account of Ephemerellomyces aquilonius, a species previously documented and studied only in Norway. Ephemerellomyces aquilonius (a monotypic genus) is a member …

Long term stability of DNA structures in a cell is critical to sustaining life. The DNA structures could be degraded biologically (e.g. enzymes), chemically (e.g. drugs), and physically (e.g. thermal agitation process) with time. The DNA structures are maintained by being regenerated and/or being recovered by proteins within a cell. However, even though it is important, it is difficult to observe the time-evolution of DNA structures for extended periods at a molecular resolution. Here, we observed the time evolution of DNA structures for two months, in order to understand the long term stability of DNA structures. For this study, we …

Preparation And Characterization Of Water-Soluble Semiconductor Quantum Dots (Qds) For Bioconjugation, Jennilee Claassen, Tabitha Ellis, Nicholas Richie
College of Arts and Sciences Poster Presentations
Semiconductor nanocrystals, or quantum dots (QDs), exhibit unique size-dependent optical properties. Absorption and emission peaks of QDs shift to longer wavelengths as their sizes are increased due to a quantum confinement effect. Quantum dots are suitable for biological applications due to their high fluorescence quantum yield and resistance to photo-bleaching. CdSe QD cores were synthesized by thermal pyrolysis of Cd and Se precursors in the organic solvent octadecene. To increase the fluorescence quantum yield and the stability of QDs, a CdS shell was grown by alternate additions of Cd and S precursors. To render the QDs soluble in water and …

Connections Between Aryl Hydrocarbon Receptor Activation And Induction Of Carbonyl Reductase Expression, Eva Amouzougan, Carrie Klocke
College of Arts and Sciences Poster Presentations
Research Interest: My research involves the regulation of carbonyl reductase (CBR) activity. CBR mediates the two-electron reduction of the C-13 carbonyl group of the anthracyclines, which results in the production of metabolic intermediates that are cardiotoxic. We are currently investigating strategies to regulate CBR expression and/or activity, which could lead to decreased cardiotoxicity associated with anthracycline treatment. Recent evidence links activation of the aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR), a soluble, ligand-activated transcription factor, to the induction of CBR. We hypothesized that inhibition of AhR signaling using resveratrol, a documented AhR antagonist, would decrease CBR protein expression. We also hypothesized that anthracyline …

Cell Adherence And Its Effect On Collagen Expression In Immortalized Rat Chondrocytes (Irc) In Culture, Neda Shefa, Raquel Brown, Prarthana Kashikar
College of Arts and Sciences Poster Presentations
Chondrocytes are cells found in cartilage, and are responsible for the production and secretion of all of the molecules of the extracellular matrix (ECM). Chondrocytes do not survive in the laboratory unless they have been modified in a way that “immortalizes” them. Immortalized chondrocytes serve as a valuable model system in which biomedical research can be carried out without relying on live animal models. Here, we present information on the characterization of the immortalized rat chondrocyte cell line with respect to extracellular matrix production, proliferation rate, optimal culture conditions, the prevelance of apoptotic events, and calcium homeostasis. This work is …

Explaining College Partner Violence In The Digital Age: An Instrumental Design Mixed Methods Study, Lisa Melander
Explaining College Partner Violence In The Digital Age: An Instrumental Design Mixed Methods Study, Lisa Melander
Department of Sociology: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Intimate partner violence is prevalent in contemporary society and certain groups of individuals such as college students are particularly at high risk for becoming involved in aggressive relationships. Despite the detailed body of literature that examines the risk factors for in-person partner violence, researchers have been criticized for their lack of attention to other behaviors that may be considered abusive. One new area of research is cyber aggression, which refers to the use of newer forms of technology (e.g., cell phones and computers) to facilitate repeated harassing behavior with the intention of harming others. Few scholars, however, examine these behaviors …

The de novoinitiating RNA-directed RNA polymerase (RdRP), P2, forms the central machinery in the infection cycle of the bacteriophage ϕ6 by performing the dual tasks of replication and transcription of the double-stranded RNA genome in the host cell. By measurement and quantitative analysis of multiple-quantum spin-relaxation data for the δ1 positions of Ile residues that are distributed over the 3D-fold of P2, we find that the enzyme is dynamic both on the fast (ps–ns) and slow (µs–ms) timescales. The characteristics of several motional modes including those that coincide with the catalytic timescale (500–800/s) are altered in the presence of …

Local Environmental Perceptions And Cognitive And Affective Learning In A Rural, Andean Community In Mollepata, Peru, Luisella Mazzone De Angelis
Local Environmental Perceptions And Cognitive And Affective Learning In A Rural, Andean Community In Mollepata, Peru, Luisella Mazzone De Angelis
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This study examines the linkages between environmental field trips and cognitive and affective gains in two groups of homogenous elementary-aged students in Mollepata, Peru. One group participated in an environmental field trip to a local, non-profit farm (Aprodes) to explore watershed and agricultural issues. The second group received the same content within the classroom setting. The research also examines the environmental perceptions of local residents via semi-formal open-ended interviews to assess their environmental awareness and their willingness to receive environmental education services from an outside organization.
Data were collected both quantitatively and qualitatively via pre and post tests containing science …

Prospects For Nuclear Non-Proliferation: An Actor-Oriented Case Study Of Iran’S Future, James Martin Lockwood
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This study is designed to assess the effectiveness of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Regime and analyze theories for effectively analyzing countries that are a risk for proliferating nuclear armaments. The initial phase of my research is designed to assess the existing literature and primary theoretical approaches for analyzing nuclear non-proliferation initiatives and potential nuclear proliferators. My main means of analysis will be to examine the national and international actors involved in each case. With this method, I plan to analyze a government at the level of each of its ruling institutions. Each of these institutions will be analyzed in the context …
Differential Decomposition Patterns Of Human Remains In Variable Environments Of The Midwest, Melissa A. Pope
Differential Decomposition Patterns Of Human Remains In Variable Environments Of The Midwest, Melissa A. Pope
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Where do people die alone when they remain undiscovered for extended periods of time? Estimation of the postmortem interval (PMI) is critical to reconstructing the events surrounding a person's death and this is an area in which forensic anthropologists have played a leading role. This thesis applied an anthropological framework that takes a comprehensive approach to analyzing the demography of unaccompanied deaths, the relationships and timing of decomposition in multiple depositional contexts, and created a model for the prediction of accumulated degree days (ADD) for bodies within enclosures.
While there have been extensive experimental and case study reviews on decomposition …
The Female Colonizer And Othered Woman In Isak Dinesen's Out Of Africa, Jean Rhys's Wide Sargasso Sea, Tayeb Salih's Season Of Migration To The North, And Paule Marshall's The Chosen Place, The Timeless People, Lindsay L. Sloan
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The central issue of this thesis is the complicated relationship between the colonized individual and the constitutive as well as emblematic female colonizer in Isak Dinesen's Out of Africa, Jean Rhys's Wide Sargasso Sea, Tayeb Salih's Season of Migration to the North, and Paule Marshall's The Chosen Place, The Timeless People. Each of these novels displays colonization by a female (or females) and relates back to historical colonialism, but each characterizes the relationship between the oppressors and oppressed differently. Dinesen's and Rhys's works stem from historical colonization in which European colonizers conquered and ruled other territories; …

Larvae of the crustacean Artemia salina are reported to differentially ingest food particles of different sizes. We exposed 2-to-5-day-old A. salina larvae to equal volumetric concentrations (bead volume per mL) of 6 µm-diameter and 0.5 µm-diameter polystyrene beads. The clearance rate (volume cleared of particles per unit time) of each bead size was positively correlated with developmental stage of the larvae (r=0.598, p
