Department of Comparative Pathobiology Faculty Publications

Background

Breast cancer is the most frequently diagnosed cancer in women. Intraepithelial lesions (IELs), such as usual ductal hyperplasia (UH), atypical ductal hyperplasia (ADH), and ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) are risk factors that predict a woman's chance of developing invasive breast cancer. Therefore, a comparative study that establishes an animal model of pre-invasive lesions is needed for the development of preventative measures and effective treatment for both mammary IELs and tumors. The purpose of this study was to characterize the histologic and molecular features of feline mammary IELs and compare them with those in women.

Methods

Formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded specimens …

Epicene Pronoun Use In Modern American English, Robin Montgomery Watson Apr 2010

Epicene Pronoun Use In Modern American English, Robin Montgomery Watson

Theses and Dissertations

Traditional prescriptive grammar for English states that the epicene or gender neutral pronoun for third person singular use is he. Research into speaker perceptions has clearly demonstrated that he is not perceived as neutral. Research has also shown traditionally proscribed epicene pronouns such as he or she and singular they to be commonly used, despite the long-standing proscriptions against them. The author examines the endurance of such proscribed options through the lens of markedness theory, considering the impact of cultural values on speakers' epicene pronoun choices. Gender in language is also considered, as well as Kuryłowicz‘s 4th Law of …

A Comparison Of The Cognitive And Personal Development Of College-Level Mathematics Students And Developmental Mathematics Students At A Community College, Bridgett Pressley Smith Apr 2010

A Comparison Of The Cognitive And Personal Development Of College-Level Mathematics Students And Developmental Mathematics Students At A Community College, Bridgett Pressley Smith

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Education is a major focal point of individual justice within a free society as well as a central point of human capital for the world. This study compared the cognitive and personal developmental levels of community college students enrolled in developmental-level mathematics courses to students enrolled in college-level mathematics courses. In addition, the effects of age, as well as a variety of demographic differences such as parents’ education, financial aid, and gender on the development of community college students were investigated. The levels of development were based on the following scales: competency, autonomy, identity, and intellectual development. The sources of …

Mathematical Models For Insulating Packages And Insulating Packaging Solutions, Jing Qian Apr 2010

Mathematical Models For Insulating Packages And Insulating Packaging Solutions, Jing Qian

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Insulating packaging is used in a variety of applications to protect temperature- sensitive products from thermal damage. Several factors affect the performance of insulating packages. These factors include (i) heat transfer through the packaging material (conduction, convection and radiation), (ii) the configuration of the insulating package, and (iii) the choice of phase change materials. In this research, a comprehensive model, including all of these factors, was developed to effectively design and analyze the performance of the insulating package.Nine one-dimensional heat transfer models, each consider only conduction, are reviewed and explored as candidates to be used for predicting the performance of …

Oxidation Of Methane By A Biological Dicopper Centre, Ramakrishnan Balasubramanian, Stephen M. Smith, Swati Rawat, Liliya A. Yatsunyk, Timothy L. Stemmler, Amy C. Rosenzweig

Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Faculty Publications

Vast world reserves of methane gas are underutilized as a feedstock for the production of liquid fuels and chemicals owing to the lack of economical and sustainable strategies for the selective oxidation of methane to methanol1. Current processes to activate the strong C–H bond (104 kcal mol−1) in methane require high temperatures, are costly and inefficient, and produce waste2. In nature, methanotrophic bacteria perform this reaction under ambient conditions using metalloenzymes called methane monooxygenases (MMOs). MMOs thus provide the optimal model for an efficient, environmentally sound catalyst3. There are two types of MMO. Soluble MMO (sMMO),expressed by several strains of …

Categorial Intentions, James Leo Virtel Apr 2010

Categorial Intentions, James Leo Virtel

Theses

Hypothetical intentionalism splits artistic intentions into two types: semantic intentions—which are concerned with the meaning of an artwork—and categorial intentions—which are concerned with how an artwork should be classified. Categorial intentions are a necessary condition for properly interpreting an artwork; without them, an artwork can have an infinite number of interpretations. Jerrold Levinson argues that categorial intentions are extrinsic to the artwork while Mark Rollins argues that microintentions—small scale representations that are intrinsic to paintings and other visual forms of art—are intrinsic to the artwork and sufficient to determine the artwork’s category. I argue against Rollins by showing that microintentions …

Research Associations Between Sport And Screen-Entertainment With Mental Health Problems In 5-Year-Old Children, Lucy J. Griffiths, Marsha Dowda, Carol Dezateux, Russell R. Pate Apr 2010

Research Associations Between Sport And Screen-Entertainment With Mental Health Problems In 5-Year-Old Children, Lucy J. Griffiths, Marsha Dowda, Carol Dezateux, Russell R. Pate

Faculty Publications

Background: Few studies have examined the benefits of regular physical activity, and risks of sedentary behaviour, in young children. This study investigated associations between participation in sports and screen-entertainment (as components of physical activity and sedentary behaviour), and emotional and behavioural problems in this population.

Methods: Cross-sectional analysis of data from 13470 children (50.9% boys) participating in the nationally representative UK Millennium Cohort Study. Time spent participating in sports clubs outside of school, and using screen-entertainment, was reported by the child's mother at child age 5 years, when mental health was also measured using the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire.
