Microsatellite Analysis Of Two Local Fox Squirrel (Sciurus Niger) Populations, Sajeena R. Horvath Apr 2010

Microsatellite Analysis Of Two Local Fox Squirrel (Sciurus Niger) Populations, Sajeena R. Horvath

Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection

The objective of this study was to examine the genetic diversity of two geographically separated populations of Eastem fox squirrels (Sciurus niger) within the Indianapolis metropolitan area. One population was located on Butler University's campus and the other at Eagle Creek Park, located about 6.5 miles WNW from the Butler campus. DNA was extracted from tail hair samples collected by live trapping squirrels during the summers of 2007, 2008, and 2009. I used microsatellite analysis to examine the genetic variation between the two sites. Hair samples from 66 Butler squirrels and 30 Eagle Creek squirrels were analyzed using 4 microsatellite …

Not Empty, Lauren Orme Apr 2010

Not Empty, Lauren Orme

Scripps Senior Theses

Not Empty is a two- part exploration of the relationship between humans and nature. In this essay I intend to discuss the relationship Australian Aboriginal peoples have with their environment. Their many cultures are among the oldest surviving civilizations on the planet, and their natural history is rich and complex. I plan to compare the relationship Australian Aboriginal cultures have to their environment to that of a Western civilization, specifically the United States. Neither relationship is perfect, nor is one of them 'better.' Both have histories riddled with extinction, evolution, and the conquest of new lands. The struggle Aboriginal Australians …

Socio-Environmental And Endocrine Influences On Developmental And Caste-Regulatory Gene Expression In The Eusocial Termite Reticulitermes Flavipes., Matthew R. Tarver, Xuguo Zhou, Michael E. Scharf Apr 2010

Socio-Environmental And Endocrine Influences On Developmental And Caste-Regulatory Gene Expression In The Eusocial Termite Reticulitermes Flavipes., Matthew R. Tarver, Xuguo Zhou, Michael E. Scharf

Department of Entomology Faculty Publications

Background

Strict regulation of caste differentiation, at the molecular level, is thought to be important to maintain social structure in insect societies. Previously, a number of extrinsic and intrinsic factors have been shown to influence caste composition in termite colonies. One important factor is the influence of nestmates; in particular, soldier termites are known to inhibit hormone-dependent worker-to-soldier differentiation. However, soldier influences on nestmates at the molecular level are virtually unknown. Here, to test the hypothesis that soldiers can influence nestmate gene expression, we investigated the impact of four treatments on whole-body gene expression in totipotent Reticulitermes flavipes workers: (i) …

A Virtue Theoretic Solution To The Problem Of Moral Luck, Jonathan Trevor Spelman Apr 2010

A Virtue Theoretic Solution To The Problem Of Moral Luck, Jonathan Trevor Spelman

Theses

At the beginning of his famous paper “Moral Luck,” Thomas Nagel notes that it is intuitively plausible that people cannot be morally assessed for what is beyond their control. He then argues that most, if not all, of what people do is beyond their control. Thus, Nagel concludes that individuals must deny that people cannot be morally assessed for what is beyond their control, alter the way they think about morality, or abandon the belief that moral assessment is possible. I contend that one’s best option is to alter the way one thinks about morality and therefore draw from the …

Effects Of Feeding Distillers' Grains On Beef Quality, Amilton S. De Mello Jr. Apr 2010

Effects Of Feeding Distillers' Grains On Beef Quality, Amilton S. De Mello Jr.

Department of Animal Science: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

This research was conducted to understand the effects of feeding finishing diets containing distillers grains on beef quality. In the first and second studies, feeding wet distillers grains plus solubles (WDGS) increased proportions of PUFA, omega 6, omega 6/omega3, and trans fatty acids when compared to corn (P ≤ 0.05). Lipid oxidation was higher in muscles from animals fed WDGS when compared to corn (P ≤ 0.05). The third study examined the effects of feeding levels up to 50% of modified distillers grains plus solubles (MDGS) on fatty acid composition in beef. Linear increase (P ≤ 0.05) …

Fundamental Work Toward An Image Processing-Empowered Dental Intelligent Educational System, Grace Olsen Apr 2010

Fundamental Work Toward An Image Processing-Empowered Dental Intelligent Educational System, Grace Olsen

Theses and Dissertations

Computer-aided education in dental schools is greatly needed in order to reduce the need for human instructors to provide guidance and feedback as students practice dental procedures. A portable computer-aided educational system with advanced digital image processing capabilities would be less expensive than current computer-aided dental educational systems and would also address some of their limitations. This dissertation outlines the development of novel components that would be part of such a system. This research includes the design of a novel image processing technique, the Directed Active Shape Model algorithm, which is used to locate the tooth and drilled preparation from …

Effects Of Explanatory Autism Disclosure On Coworker Attitudes, Kathleen M. Henegan Apr 2010

Effects Of Explanatory Autism Disclosure On Coworker Attitudes, Kathleen M. Henegan

Honors Projects

People with autism tend to have difficulties with the social relationships in the workplace, which are a crucial aspect to maintaining employment. In this study, we investigated whether disclosure of an autism spectrum disorder would improve adults’ attitudes toward a potential coworker with autism. Participants (93 college students, 93 working adults) were randomly assigned to read one of three vignettes describing the same interaction with a potential coworker with moderately severe ASD, but different levels of disclosure. As hypothesized, disclosure, as compared to no disclosure, led significantly more positive attitudes toward and higher willingness to work with the coworker. Disclosure …

For You Are All One In Christ (Gal 3:28): The Role Of Women In The Pauline Churches, Sarah Casey Apr 2010

For You Are All One In Christ (Gal 3:28): The Role Of Women In The Pauline Churches, Sarah Casey

Honors Projects

This paper seeks to demonstrate the fundamental importance of women in Paul's ministry. Contrary to many modern interpreters, I suggest that Paul had an inclusive attitude toward women–an attitude that was rather extraordinary for his times. Paul's inclusive attitude was however not maintained in the later Christian churches. I suggest that this loss of inclusivity has led people to read Paul incorrectly, through the lens of the Deutero-Pauline literature and the later church, rather than letting Paul's letters stand on their own. Through a literary-historical analysis of the authentic Pauline letters I will try to show the various and substantial …

Abstract Willis, Sharese. Ph.D. The University of Memphis. May 2010. A Burkeian Analysis of the Embryo in the Congressional Debate over Federally Funding Embryonic Stem Cell Research (1998-2001). Major Professor: Loel Kim, Ph.D.Debates about publicly funded science research have attracted the interest of various types of stakeholders who use different strategies to argue their positions. The more scientists use human biological material as their focus of study, the more nonscientists call for and participate in debate about such research. In this dissertation, I study the debate about embryonic stem cell research by analyzing transcripts from Congressional hearings held from 1998 …

Loading And Coating Water Soluble Poly(Ethylene Oxide) Substrates Under Ethanol Using The Layer- By-Layer Technique, Sudha Ramachandra Apr 2010

Loading And Coating Water Soluble Poly(Ethylene Oxide) Substrates Under Ethanol Using The Layer- By-Layer Technique, Sudha Ramachandra

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

ABSTRACTA poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) and poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) layer-by-layer (LBL) coating was self-assembled on a PEO substrate under non-aqueous conditions using ethanol. After lysine, ferricyanide, and Prussian blue (PB) had been loaded into the PEO granules, the resulting PEO polymer gel was dried to obtain strips that could be dip-coated onto silica wafers to obtain planar base coats with a bilayer thickness of 115 Aoat pH = 6 and 350 Aoat pH = 2. Further analysis revealed that upon coating, retention in the PEO core was > 95% for PB, ~80% for ferricyanide, and ~73% for lysine. A dissolution test of …

Multi-Scale Analysis Of Landscape And Geomorphic Controls On Stream Habitat Structure, Andrew M. Sanderson Apr 2010

Multi-Scale Analysis Of Landscape And Geomorphic Controls On Stream Habitat Structure, Andrew M. Sanderson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Landscape and geomorphic characteristics within watersheds in the North and South Umpqua Basins in Southwestern Oregon were summarized at five spatial scales (basin, sub-basin, network, sub-network, and segment) and incorporated into multiple regression models to determine the relative effects of each on stream morphology and provide a potential predictive model of stream habitat characteristics using GIS-managed landscape variables. Measures of stream morphology included mean stream depth, mean corrected width, width-to-depth ratio, percent shade provided to habitat units, and substrate composition, summarized for 200 stream segments. While certain variables were demonstrated to have a consistent influence across more than one scale, …

Rethinking Representations Of Health And Disease: Foucault, Canguilhem, And The U.S. Center For Disease Control Reports On Aids, Jacob Peter Neal Apr 2010

Rethinking Representations Of Health And Disease: Foucault, Canguilhem, And The U.S. Center For Disease Control Reports On Aids, Jacob Peter Neal

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

ABSTRACT This project explores the representation and conceptualization of health and disease through the historical analyses of Michel Foucault and Georges Canguilhem. By tracing the historical emergence and formation of certain concepts of disease and health from the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, their thought provides the groundwork for an investigation of our contemporary representations of a distinctly modern disease—acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). The first two chapters extract from this philosophical and historical work the theoretical basis for an analysis of the language and representation of AIDS. The final chapter then analyzes the U.S. Center for Disease Control (CDC) publications on …

Habitat Preference Of Nitrophila Species, Kari Hugie Apr 2010

Habitat Preference Of Nitrophila Species, Kari Hugie

Undergraduate Research Conference

Nitrophila occidentalis and Nirophlia mohavensis are both members of the same Family and Genus, and they both are found in the Great Basin region. They are the only members of the Genus Nitrophila native to the United States. Nitrophila occidentalisflourishes in the Great Basin, but Nitrophila mohavensis is endangered and limited to a few populations. Habitat analysis was done to the two species using GIS (Geographical Information Systems) to gain some new insight on how to preserve this endangered species. A discrete difference in soil alkalinity preference was found, which may help in saving N. mohavensis.

The Effects Of Food Quality On Preference And Incurred Risk In White-Tailed Deer (Odocoileus Virginianus), Travis Perlman, Jacob Stanton Apr 2010

The Effects Of Food Quality On Preference And Incurred Risk In White-Tailed Deer (Odocoileus Virginianus), Travis Perlman, Jacob Stanton

Undergraduate Research Conference

An observational study was concluded in Nacogdoches County, Texas, to determine if free-range white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) could assess forage value. Multiple parameters were recorded to determine if individuals were willing to incur hight levels of risk as they sought to maximize their fitness, through dietary selection. Our results indicated that individuals were willing to incur higher levels of risk, in order to attain higher quality food items.

Characterization Of Two Cx9c Containing Mitochondrial Proteins Necessary For Cytochrome C Oxidase Assembly, Darryl M. Horn Apr 2010

Characterization Of Two Cx9c Containing Mitochondrial Proteins Necessary For Cytochrome C Oxidase Assembly, Darryl M. Horn

Open Access Dissertations

Copper is an essential cofactor of two mitochondrial enzymes: cytochrome c oxidase (COX) and the mitochondrial localized fraction of Cu-Zn superoxide dismutase (Sod1p). Copper incorporation into these enzymes is facilitated by a growing number of metallochaperone proteins. Here we describe two novel copper chaperones of COX, Cmc1 and Cmc2. In Saccharomyces cerevisiae, both Cmc1 and Cmc2 localize to the mitochondrial inner membrane facing the intermembrane space. Cmc1 and Cmc2 are essential for full expression of COX and cellular respiration, contain a twin Cx9C domain, and are conserved from yeast to humans. Additionally, the presence or absence of these proteins not …

Determining The Effects Of Aging On Murine Bone-Marrow Derived Mesenchymal Stem Cell Cardiac And Angiogenic Plasticity Potential, Amber D. Wilson Apr 2010

Determining The Effects Of Aging On Murine Bone-Marrow Derived Mesenchymal Stem Cell Cardiac And Angiogenic Plasticity Potential, Amber D. Wilson

Open Access Dissertations

Reduction of cardiac myocyte loss and repair of the vasculature post myocardial infarction are important therapeutic goals because the potential for intrinsic repair is limited. Preclinical and limited clinical data support the possibility that bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells may be a suitable cell type for cellular therapy. The goal of this research was to determine the effectiveness of using MSCs from aged mice in cellular therapy for the treatment of AMI. The central hypothesis for this research was that therapeutic potential of mesenchymal stem cells decreases with age. This research utilized global gene expression analysis to investigate molecular differences …
