Genome-wide association studies have identified many common genetic variants that are associated with polygenic traits, and have typically been performed with individuals of recent European ancestry. In these populations, many common variants are tightly correlated, with the perfect or near-perfect proxies for the functional or true variant showing equivalent evidence of association, considerably limiting the resolution of fine mapping. Populations with recent African ancestry often have less extensive and/or different patterns of linkage disequilibrium (LD), and have been proposed to be useful in fine-mapping studies. Here, we strongly replicate and fine map in populations of predominantly African ancestry the association …

Memories For Sexual Encounters: Sexual Attitudes, Personality, Gender, And Evidence For Personal Flashbulb Effects, Nicholas Ryan Comotto Apr 2010

Memories For Sexual Encounters: Sexual Attitudes, Personality, Gender, And Evidence For Personal Flashbulb Effects, Nicholas Ryan Comotto

Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection

Recollections of first and most recent sex experiences were examined as personal flashbulb memories (FBM) using "open" narrative and probed recall estimates over the course of two studies. Furthermore, dimensions of gender, personality, and sexual attitudes were analyzed for their effects on sexual memory. Although both experiences were rated as equally arousing, the first sexual experience occurred with a longer delay to test and was talked about more than three times as much as the most recent experience. However, memories for most recent sexual experiences were rated as more vivid in study II. Yet, first sexual memories contained more narrative …

BACKGROUND: Thiazolidinediones (TZDs) activate peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma (PPARgamma) and are used clinically to help restore peripheral insulin sensitivity in Type 2 diabetes (T2DM). Interestingly, long-term treatment of mouse models of Alzheimer's disease (AD) with TZDs also has been shown to reduce several well-established brain biomarkers of AD including inflammation, oxidative stress and Abeta accumulation. While TZD's actions in AD models help to elucidate the mechanisms underlying their potentially beneficial effects in AD patients, little is known about the functional consequences of TZDs in animal models of normal aging. Because aging is a common risk factor for both AD and …

Insulin-Like Growth Factor Binding Protein-3 (Igfbp-3) Plays An Essential Role In Cellular Senescence: Molecular And Clinical Implications., Amanda Garza

Theses and Dissertations

Normal somatic cells have a limited proliferative capacity in vivo and in vitro, termed senescence and later, thought to contribute to molecular and cellular organismal aging. There are several studies that demonstrate the importance of the GH/IGF axis in longevity, aging and cellular senescence. One primary component of the IGF signaling involves IGFBP-3. It is well documented that IGFBP-3 levels are significantly increased in senescent human diploid fibroblasts however IGFBP-3 function is not known in this system. Interestingly, Werner syndrome fibroblasts, commonly used as a model of cellular aging, have upregulated IGFBP-3 levels in young and late passage cells compared …

The East Mountain Area Septic System User's Guide To The Bernalillo County Wastewater Ordinance : Ensuring Groundwater Sustainability, Michael E. Campana, Michele Minnis

Water Resources Field Methods Reports

On June 29, 2000, Bernalillo County released a draft wastewater ordinance, Bernalillo County Wastewater Ordinance, for public comment; in the fall of 2000, this ordinance was adopted. The ordinance is intended to protect public health and safety by establishing minimum criteria for the design, installation, inspection, treatment, and management of commercial and domestic wastewater systems. The ordinance is detailed and perhaps difficult to understand for the average homeowner in the East Mountain Area (EMA). It encompasses engineering, permitting, and maintenance requirements for new or modified septic systems in place after the effective date of this ordinance. Without thorough review and …

Smap-Ws: A Parallel Web Service For Structural Proteome-Wide Ligand-Binding Site Comparison, Jingyuan Ren, Lei Xie, Wilfred W. Li, Philip E. Bourne

Publications and Research

The proteome-wide characterization and analysis of protein ligand-binding sites and their interactions with ligands can provide pivotal information in understanding the structure, function and evolution of proteins and for designing safe and efficient therapeutics. The SMAP web service (SMAP-WS) meets this need through parallel computations designed for 3D ligand-binding site comparison and similarity searching on a structural proteome scale. SMAP-WS implements a shape descriptor (the Geometric Potential) that characterizes both local and global topological properties of the protein structure and which can be used to predict the likely ligand-binding pocket [Xie,L. and Bourne,P.E. (2007) A robust and efficient algorithm for …

Duality Of A Cage, Younseal Eum Apr 2010

Duality Of A Cage, Younseal Eum

Theses and Dissertations

My thesis is about the dualistic connotation of the cage. The original intention of a cage is to create a boundary to enclose a target. However, a cage has a positive intent for protection. With this idea, I created kinetic sculpture and installation pieces referencing cages. While I understand the negative association of cages, I made them seductive through the careful consideration of lightness, fragility, and sheen. I have been exploring forms and material qualities to express the contradictory connotation of cages. Most of my work is made of wire because I have a great interest in the delicate nature …

Expression & Purification Of Recombinant Plasmodium Falciparum Erythrocyte-Binding Ligands, Seward Joann Cofie Apr 2010

Expression & Purification Of Recombinant Plasmodium Falciparum Erythrocyte-Binding Ligands, Seward Joann Cofie

Theses and Dissertations

Plasmodium falciparum, the most virulent malarial parasite, is capable of invading all known human blood types. Erythrocyte invasion depends on specific parasite ligand and erythrocyte receptor interactions. These interactions are mediated by Region II of the P. falciparum erythrocyte binding ligands. Although invasion does not seem dependent upon a singular ligand, their individual contributions to the invasion process are yet to be explained. In this study, Region II of P. falciparum binding ligands BAEBL and JESEBL were transiently expressed as hexahistidyl recombinant proteins in COS-1 cells. Purification by column chromatography yielded 0.52 mg of BAEBL and 0.433 mg of JESEBL. …

Exploratory Analysis Of Protein Translation Regulatory Networks Using Hierarchical Random Graphs, Daniel D. Wu, Xiaohua Hu, Ek Park, Xiaofeng Wang, Jiali Feng, Xindong Wu

Publications and Research

Abstract Background Protein translation is a vital cellular process for any living organism. The availability of interaction databases provides an opportunity for researchers to exploit the immense amount of data in silico such as studying biological networks. There has been an extensive effort using computational methods in deciphering the transcriptional regulatory networks. However, research on translation regulatory networks has caught little attention in the bioinformatics and computational biology community. Results In this paper, we present an exploratory analysis of yeast protein translation regulatory networks using hierarchical random graphs. We derive a protein translation regulatory network from a protein-protein interaction dataset. …

The Complexity And Origins Of The Human Eye: A Brief Study On The Anatomy, Physiology, And Origin Of The Eye, Evan T. Sebastian Apr 2010

The Complexity And Origins Of The Human Eye: A Brief Study On The Anatomy, Physiology, And Origin Of The Eye, Evan T. Sebastian

Senior Honors Theses

The human eye has been the cause of much controversy in regards to its complexity and how the human eye came to be. Through following and discussing the anatomical and physiological functions of the eye, a better understanding of the argument of origins can be seen. The anatomy of the human eye and its many functions are clearly seen, through its complexity. When observing the intricacy of vision and all of the different aspects and connections, it does seem that the human eye is a miracle, no matter its origins. Major biological functions and processes occurring in the retina show …

An Efficient Implementation Of An Exponential Random Number Generator In A Field Programmable Gate Array (Fpga), Smitha Gautham

Theses and Dissertations

Many physical, biological, ecological and behavioral events occur at times and rates that are exponentially distributed. Modeling these systems requires simulators that can accurately generate a large quantity of exponentially distributed random numbers, which is a computationally intensive task. To improve the performance of these simulators, one approach is to move portions of the computationally inefficient simulation tasks from software to custom hardware implemented in Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs). In this work, we study efficient FPGA implementations of exponentially distributed random number generators to improve simulator performance. Our approach is to generate uniformly distributed random numbers using standard techniques …

In Vitro Evaluation Of 87.4% Dda Chitosan Coated On Titanium For Local Delivery Of Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor, Megan R. Leedy

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Dental implants are widely used for the replacement of missing teeth and have a high success rate, but further enhancement of osseointegration is desired. This enhancement may be achieved through improved vascularization of surrounding bone. The aim of this investigation was to determine the potential of chitosan coatings on titanium to deliver vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) to stimulate blood vessel formation and influence the growth and matrix formation of osteoblastic cells in efforts to enhance osseointegration. Chitosan was chemically bonded to titanium via a silane-glutaraldehyde process and loaded with VEGF. The protein, which was released over three days, improved …

National Ideology And The Making Of A Nation: Simion Barnutiu And The Romanian Revolution Of 1848-1849 In Transylvania, Cristian Daniel Ivanes

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

This dissertation is a case study: the emergence of liberal nationalism in the mid–nineteenth century Transylvania, one of the poorest parts of the Habsburg monarchy. Even in a still agrarian society it was yet possible for the Romanians to articulate a national program and to fight for self–determination. Simion Brnuiu was the mastermind of the revolutionary program of the Transylvanian Romanians in 1848, the visionary who gave the movement its sense and strategy. The course of his life unfolded along an interesting and often tragic path. Simion Brnuiu graduated from the Uniate Theological Seminary in Blaj. It is fair to …

Human-Wildlife Conflict Across Urbanization Gradients: Spatial, Social, And Ecological Factors, Amanda H. Gilleland Apr 2010

Human-Wildlife Conflict Across Urbanization Gradients: Spatial, Social, And Ecological Factors, Amanda H. Gilleland

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

As suburban and exurban residential developments continue to multiply in urban areas, they encroach on wildlife habitats leading to increased human-wildlife interactions. The animals involved in direct conflict with homeowners are often relocated or exterminated by the homeowners. Often the homeowners contact state licensed wildlife trappers to eliminate the problem animal. In this study I examined how landscape, ecological, and social factors influence the incidence of human-wildlife conflict of thirty two residential areas in the Tampa, Florida metropolitan area. These residential areas, totaling over 300 km2, are part of the urban development gradient representing a range of urban land use …

Forest Conservation In A Changing World: Natural Or Cultural? Example From The Western Carpathians Forests, Romania, Angelica N. Feurdean

Studia UBB Geologia

In order to plan for the future management of some of the most biodiverse forests of Europe, it is essential that we understand under which condition they arose and the time and processes responsible for their variability. Here, I highlight the main findings from the palaeoecological (pollen and charcoal), archaeological and historical investigation comprising the last 6000 years, in the Apuseni Natural Park, NW Romania and discuss the effect of the past land use and forest management on these forests. I then ask what does it mean in term of conservation values if these forests are not natural but a …
