2009 Vascular Plant Surveys In The Central Niobrara River Valley, Nebraska, Mary Ann Feist, Paul B. Marcum, Loy R. Philippe, Brenda Molano-Flores, Valerie Sivicek

Nebraska Game and Parks Commission: White Papers, Conference Presentations, and Manuscripts

The Niobrara River Valley in northern Nebraska is an important floristic area. It harbours a number of bryophyte, vascular plant, and animal species that are rarely found in close proximity to one another. Many of these species are more typical farther to the north, east, or west, but over time as climates have changed, have come to settle together in this valley (Kaul et al. 1988). The central Niobrara River Valley may be the most botanically diverse region of Nebraska. Approximately 580 of Nebraska’s roughly 2,000 vascular plant species have been documented for the Niobrara Valley Preserve (Schneider et al. …

Trumpeter Swan Survey Of The Rocky Mountain Population Winter 2010, Dave Olson Apr 2010

Trumpeter Swan Survey Of The Rocky Mountain Population Winter 2010, Dave Olson

United States Fish and Wildlife Service: Publications

Observers counted 4,290 swans (white birds and cygnets) in the Rocky Mountain Population of trumpeter swans during February 2010, which was a 19% decrease from the 5,265 counted during winter 2009. The number of white birds (3,600) and cygnets (690) decreased 19% and 22%, respectively, from counts last year. In the tri-state area, the number of total swans increased dramatically (79%) from a near record low count in Montana in 2009, but decreased in Wyoming (-9%), and Idaho (-24%). The number of birds wintering in areas near restoration flocks was the lowest since 2004. The numbers of birds at Ruby …

Bartleby The Original The Queer, Rebecca Epstein Apr 2010

Bartleby The Original The Queer, Rebecca Epstein

Pomona Senior Theses

Insofar as human beings try to “know” we must define concepts, objects, actions. We label, we distinguish between one concept and another, and in doing this, we make categories. Labels are categories. Our categories are imperfect. Our labels are always relative, defined by and dependent on that which they exclude. The boundaries of our terms, what “counts” as something or what is considered to be within a certain term, are always shifting. Our definitions change based on our method of analysis. For instance, the definition of “human” is different in different disciplines, like science, philosophy, sociology, economics, etc. Given their …

Spatial And Temporal Distribution Of Larval Fishes In A Large Tidal River., Harold Seelig Apr 2010

Spatial And Temporal Distribution Of Larval Fishes In A Large Tidal River., Harold Seelig

Theses and Dissertations

There are few published studies of larval fish assemblages from unregulated, tidal freshwater rivers. Patterns in the spatial and temporal distribution of larval fishes in the Mattaponi River were examined. Sampling took place on a weekly basis from February through August, 2006 and 2007. Larval fishes were categorized by taxa, reproductive guild, and residency guild. Group comparisons using multi-response permutation procedures (MRPP) indicated significant spatial and temporal differences in assemblage composition on multiple scales. Differences in assemblage composition were analyzed using non-metric multidimensional scaling (NMS). Interannual differences were attributable to anadromous and semi-migratory species. Seasonal differences were attributable to herrings, …

A Multicentre Matched Case Control Study Of Risk Factors For Preeclampsia In Healthy Women In Pakistan., Uzma Shamsi, Juanita Hatcher, Azra Shamsi, Nadeem Zuberi, Zeeshan Qadri, Sarah Saleem

Community Health Sciences

Background: Preeclampsia is one of the leading causes of maternal and perinatal morbidity and mortality world-wide. The risk for developing preeclampsia varies depending on the underlying mechanism. Because the disorder is heterogeneous, the pathogenesis can differ in women with various risk factors. Understanding these mechanisms of disease responsible for preeclampsia as well as risk assessment is still a major challenge. The aim of this study was to determine the risk factors associated with preeclampsia, in healthy women in maternity hospitals of Karachi and Rawalpindi. Methods: We conducted a hospital based matched case-control study to assess the factors associated with preeclampsia …

Family Preservation In Families’ Ecological Systems: Factors That Predict Out-Of-Home Placement And Maltreatment For Service Recipients In Richmond City, Jody Hearn Apr 2010

Family Preservation In Families’ Ecological Systems: Factors That Predict Out-Of-Home Placement And Maltreatment For Service Recipients In Richmond City, Jody Hearn

Theses and Dissertations

Family preservation services are intended to prevent the out-of-home placement (into foster care or some other alternative arrangement) of children and youth in families at risk of maltreating them. An Ecological Systems perspective of these families might suggest that a family’s context (represented by the variables of poverty, agency services, family history, and individual/caretaker characteristics) must be considered as an over-arching influence in families’ risk and outcomes. The purpose of this cross-sectional secondary data analysis study was to identify layered factors that distinguish family preservation cases in Richmond, VA that experience removal or subsequent abuse or neglect from those that …

A Hybrid Genetic Algorithm For The Student-Aware University Course Timetabling Problem, Ernesto Ferrer Queiros Nunez Apr 2010

A Hybrid Genetic Algorithm For The Student-Aware University Course Timetabling Problem, Ernesto Ferrer Queiros Nunez

Mathematics, Statistics, and Computer Science Honors Projects

Traditionally, academic institutions schedule courses using constraints that ensure that instructors and courses do not overlap in available rooms and time periods; students' planning needs are rarely taken into account. This problem becomes particularly acute for students in liberal arts institutions, because they have multiple graduation requirements in addition to their chosen academic program. My research builds on the University Course Timetabling Problem (UCTP) to include students' scheduling needs. This approach to the UCTP problem uses a combination of a genetic algorithm and case-based reasoning.

To improve the performance of the genetic algorithm, I use a group-based genetic algorithm to …

Functional Characterization Of Mat1-1-Specific Mating-Type Genes In The Homothallic Ascomycete Sordaria Macrospora Provides New Insights Into Essential And Nonessential Sexual Regulators, V. Klix, M. Nowrousian, C. Ringelberg, J. J. Loros Apr 2010

Functional Characterization Of Mat1-1-Specific Mating-Type Genes In The Homothallic Ascomycete Sordaria Macrospora Provides New Insights Into Essential And Nonessential Sexual Regulators, V. Klix, M. Nowrousian, C. Ringelberg, J. J. Loros

Dartmouth Scholarship

Mating-type genes in fungi encode regulators of mating and sexual development. Heterothallic ascomycete species require different sets of mating-type genes to control nonself-recognition and mating of compatible partners of different mating types. Homothallic (self-fertile) species also carry mating-type genes in their genome that are essential for sexual development. To analyze the molecular basis of homothallism and the role of mating-type genes during fruiting-body development, we deleted each of the three genes, SmtA-1 (MAT1-1-1), SmtA-2 (MAT1-1-2), and SmtA-3 (MAT1-1-3), contained in the MAT1-1 part of the mating-type locus of the homothallic ascomycete species Sordaria macrospora. Phenotypic analysis of deletion mutants revealed …

A Statement On The Biblical Doctrine Of Creation, Seventh-Day Adventist Theological Seminary Apr 2010

A Statement On The Biblical Doctrine Of Creation, Seventh-Day Adventist Theological Seminary

Books

First we formulate our understanding of the biblical account of the Creation, Fall, and the New Creation, then turn to issues regarding the interface between science and faith. We do so from the perspective of faith in a personal God as contrasted with more impersonal approaches to the divine nature. Our purpose is to facilitate constructive dialogue regarding differing worldviews such as a recent biblical Creation model contrasted with an ancient life on earth model. The document concludes by focusing on the proper stewardship of Creation.

Tied Together: A Molecular Role For Tie1 In Angiopoietin Tie2 Signaling, Tom Cm Seegar Apr 2010

Tied Together: A Molecular Role For Tie1 In Angiopoietin Tie2 Signaling, Tom Cm Seegar

Theses and Dissertations

The primary function of the vascular system is the maintenance of oxygen homeostasis for all metazoan tissue. Angiogenesis, the remodeling and maintenance of new blood vessels from an existing vessel, is primarily controlled through the endothelial specific receptor tyrosine kinase Tie2, and the orphan receptor tyrosine kinase, Tie1. Although these receptors share highly conserved, genetic and biochemical analysis has shown these receptors have distinct and essential roles in angiogenesis. Tie2 activation typically results in vessel stability and quiescences and has further been shown to interact with all four sub-types of the angiopoietin signaling factors, Ang1-4. Conversely, Tie1 is involved in …

"Heaven's Last, Worst Gift To White Men": The Quadroons Of Antebellum New Orleans, Erin Elizabeth Mccullugh

Dissertations and Theses

Visitors to Antebellum New Orleans rarely failed to comment on the highly visible population of free persons of color, particularly the women. Light, but not white, the women who collectively became known as Quadroons enjoyed a degree of affluence and liberty largely unknown outside of Southeastern Louisiana. The Quadroons of New Orleans, however, suffered from neglect and misrepresentation in nineteenth and twentieth-century accounts.

Historians of slavery and southern black women, for example, have written at length on the sexual experiences of black women and white men. Most of the research, however, centers on the institutionalized rape, victimization, and exploitation of …

Exergy Modeling To Compare Engineered Products To Biological Systems For Sustainable Design, Richard D. Stokes Jr. Apr 2010

Exergy Modeling To Compare Engineered Products To Biological Systems For Sustainable Design, Richard D. Stokes Jr.

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

An ambitious and novel approach to engineering design and sustainability has been taken to explore the potential of drawing parallels between mechanical and biological systems for the possible development of sustainable engineering design metrics using a thermodynamic model. This approach looks to biology. Natural selection has given biological beings and processes high exergetic efficiencies, even while being only 30-40% energy efficient on the cell level. This energy inefficiency, resulting in a release of heat, can then be used to aid in driving other biochemical processes. The Gibbs free energy becomes more negative proportionally with an increase in temperature, resulting in …

Transplantation And Parrotfish Predation: A Study On Small Siderastrea Siderea Colonies Offshore Broward County, Fl Usa, Allison S. Brownlee

HCNSO Student Theses and Dissertations

With increasing coastal development along southeastern Florida, nearshore coral reef communities are at an increased risk from anthropogenic impacts. Impact minimization and mitigation efforts associated with permitted coastal construction activities generally exclude nearshore small (< 10 cm diameter) Siderastrea siderea colonies from required coral transplantation due to an assumed high colony mortality associated with transplanting small stony corals. This study evaluated the efficacy of transplanting these small colonies by monitoring survival, growth, and zooxanthellae density post transplantation to an offshore reef area. Unexpected observations of parrotfish predation on the newly transplanted corals were made within the first 24 hours. Within 2 weeks, 94% …

Effects Of Variable Oceanographic Conditions On Forage Fish Lipid Content And Fatty Acid Composition In The Northern California Current, Marisa N. C. Litz, Richard D. Brodeur, Robert L. Emmett, Selina S. Heppell, Rosalee S. Hellberg, Linda O'Higgins, Matthew S. Morris

Food Science Faculty Articles and Research

Lipids and fatty acids (FA) were investigated in 4 species of forage fish: northern anchovy Engraulis mordax, Pacific sardine Sardinops sagax, Pacific herring Clupea pallasi, and whitebait smelt Allosmerus elongatus, for their ability to serve as biological indicators of ocean conditions in the California Current large marine ecosystem (CCLME). Samples were collected during the oceanographically contrasting years of 2005 and 2006. Upwelling was severely curtailed in the spring and early summer of 2005, leading to delayed biological productivity, whereas upwelling was relatively normal in spring 2006. Principal components analysis described 78% of the variance within the …

The Mechanism Of Mitochondrial Folate Transport By The Mitochondrial Folate Transporter, Scott Alan Lawrence Apr 2010

The Mechanism Of Mitochondrial Folate Transport By The Mitochondrial Folate Transporter, Scott Alan Lawrence

Theses and Dissertations

The mitochondrial folate transport protein (MFT) functions to transport folates into the mitochondrial matrix. The MFT is a member of a mitochondrial carrier family (MCF) of proteins that have a high degree of sequence and structural similarities, yet they transport vastly different substrates at high specificities. In this dissertation research, the folate-specific transport mechanism of the MFT was explored using experimental and computational techniques. MFT residues that differed from MCF consensus residues in conserved PxD/ExxK/R motifs and at a predicted substrate-binding site common to all MCF proteins were investigated. Site-directed mutagenesis of these anomalous residues in the MFT revealed that …

Transcriptional Factors That Promote Formation Of White Adipose Tissue, Ursula A. White, Jacqueline M. Stephens Apr 2010

Transcriptional Factors That Promote Formation Of White Adipose Tissue, Ursula A. White, Jacqueline M. Stephens

Faculty Publications

Adipocytes are highly specialized cells that play a major role in energy homeostasis in vertebrate organisms. Excess adipocyte size or number is a hallmark of obesity, which is currently a global epidemic. Obesity is a major risk factor for the development of type II diabetes (T2DM), cardiovascular disease, and hypertension. Obesity and its related disorders result in dysregulation of the mechanisms that control the expression of metabolic and endocrine related genes in adipocytes. Therefore, understanding adipocyte differentiation is relevant not only for gaining insight into the pathogenesis of metabolic diseases, but also for identifying proteins or pathways which might be …
