Evaluation Of Parameters Specified In Awpa Standard E1-97: Standard Method For Laboratory Evaluation To Determine Resistance To Subterranean Termites, Gary Brian Lindsey May 2010

Evaluation Of Parameters Specified In Awpa Standard E1-97: Standard Method For Laboratory Evaluation To Determine Resistance To Subterranean Termites, Gary Brian Lindsey

Theses and Dissertations

This research focuses on the evaluation of many aspects of the American Wood Protection Association (AWPA) Standard E1-97, “Standard Method for Laboratory Evaluation to Determine Resistance to Subterranean Termites.” This standard is used extensively for testing the efficacy of new products and preservative systems against subterranean termite species. Research was done to determine what changes, if any, are needed for testing against subterranean termite species such as Coptotermes formosanus (Shiraki) and species of native termite genus Reticulitermes (Holmgren), primarily R. flavipes (Kollar). Variables from the current standard were tested to determine effects of parameters such as moisture of sand substrate; …

Exceptionally Well-Preserved Quaternary Fossils From Sawmill Sink Blue Hole, Abaco, The Bahamas, Nancy Ann Albury May 2010

Exceptionally Well-Preserved Quaternary Fossils From Sawmill Sink Blue Hole, Abaco, The Bahamas, Nancy Ann Albury

Theses and Dissertations

A diverse assemblage of exquisitely-preserved fossil animals and plants were collected from Sawmill Sink blue hole in Abaco, Bahamas. More than 40 species have been identified including extinct tortoise, an extant crocodile, and birds that no longer live in The Bahamas. This study addresses the mechanisms that preserve fossils in blue holes and discusses paleoecological implications from faunal diversity and sediment composition. Blue holes are waterilled caves with surface openings that may trap animals and surface-driven vegetation. In Sawmill Sink the talus cone within the halocline acts as a substrate on which organics collect that drive microbe ecology. Their byproducts, …

A Novel Approach To Grass-Legume Management, Juan Kevin Quamina Solomon May 2010

A Novel Approach To Grass-Legume Management, Juan Kevin Quamina Solomon

Theses and Dissertations

A 2-yr grazing study quantified pasture and animal responses of four forage systems (FS) grazed at two stocking rates (SR; 3 or 6 animals ha-1). Using „Marshall? annual ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum Lam.) and „Durana? white clover (Trifolium repens L.), FS treatments included spatially separated grass and legumes within the same paddock (SS), monoculture grass (MG), monoculture legume (ML), and a binary grass and legume mixture (MIX). Annual herbage mass (HM) was similar among FS at high SR (1900 kg ha-1), but at low SR, grass plots had greater HM (2900 vs. 2000 kg ha-1) than plots of legume monocultures. Animals …

The Adaaa: Opening The Floodgates, Amelia Michele Joiner May 2010

The Adaaa: Opening The Floodgates, Amelia Michele Joiner

San Diego Law Review

This Article will examine whether Congress erred in enacting the ADAAA to include the provision that mitigating measures will not be taken into account when determining whether an individual is disabled under prong one of the ADA's disability definition. With the incorporation of this language, Congress took away the individualized assessment necessary for ADA interpretation and replaced it with a per se disabled format for particular conditions, such as diabetes and epilepsy. Simply stated, the ADAAA approach to the mitigating measures analysis, which negated the individualized disability assessment that Congress envisioned, does not promote the best possible determination of whether …

Teaching With Emotion: Enriching The Educational Experience Of First-Year Law Students, Grant H. Morris May 2010

Teaching With Emotion: Enriching The Educational Experience Of First-Year Law Students, Grant H. Morris

San Diego Law Review

Through the case method and Socratic dialogue, first year law students are taught to develop critical legal analytic skills-to “think like a lawyer.” Those skills, however, are primarily, if not entirely, intellectual. This article discusses the need to address emotional issues in educating law students. Unlike other articles, my article does not merely urge professors to raise such issues in their classes and discuss them analytically. Rather, I want students to actually experience emotion in the classroom setting as they discuss various fact situations and the legal principles involved in the resolution of disputes involving those facts. Law students need …

Loss Of Stromal Caveolin-1 Independently Predicts Poor Disease-Free Survival And Time To Recurrence In Patients With Prostate Cancer, M. Wagner, A. Dasgupta, F. Sotgia, R. B. West, M. P. Lisanti, A. K. Witkiewicz May 2010

Loss Of Stromal Caveolin-1 Independently Predicts Poor Disease-Free Survival And Time To Recurrence In Patients With Prostate Cancer, M. Wagner, A. Dasgupta, F. Sotgia, R. B. West, M. P. Lisanti, A. K. Witkiewicz

Department of Pathology, Anatomy, and Cell Biology Faculty Papers

Results:

Of the 167 patients originally included in the study, 43 were either lost to follow up or had insufficient clinical data for comparison. Of the remaining 124 cases, 32 showed loss of stromal Cav-1. Statistical analysis revealed no significant association between stromal Cav-1 loss and the usual markers of disease severity including Gleason grade, stage and presence of metastases. Kaplan-Meier curves showed a significant association between stromal Cav-1 loss and poor disease-free survival and time to recurrence (p<0.05), but no significant association with cancer-specific survival.

Physiological Responses To Temperature In The Lizard, Sceloporus Undulatus, Joseph C. Ehrenberger May 2010

Physiological Responses To Temperature In The Lizard, Sceloporus Undulatus, Joseph C. Ehrenberger

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Temperature affects all organisms differently. Physiological processes, such as metabolism, interact with temperature to determine a minimal rate of energy loss. Physiological limits, such as heat and cold tolerances, likely constrain the activity and survival of organisms. Ultimately, these physiological processes and limits determine a species‘ geographical distribution. Through experiments, I sought to understand specifically how temperature affects the physiology of the lizard Sceloporus undulatus. This species is a model organism to answer such questions, as it is geographically widespread species and well-described phylogenetically. In the first experiment, I compared standard metabolic rates of lizards from three locales and interpreted …

Professors With Criminal Records: Criminology & Criminal Justice Students Views On Former Convicts As Professors, John Frana

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

As America’s incarceration binge begins its fourth decade, one unintended consequence of this social policy has been a growing number of criminologists/sociologists who have personal experience with incarceration as many former convicts have been pursuing education as an avenue for successful re-entry. Some of these ex-convicts have begun to secure PhD’s and have been conducting research as well as teaching various university courses in Sociology and/or Criminology and Criminal Justice. Within this thesis the myths maintained by society surrounding crime and prisoners will be discussed. Using survey research, students majoring in Criminology and Criminal Justice (n = 186) at ISU …

Glacial/Interglacial Export Production In The Subantarctic South Pacific, Jessica Adamic May 2010

Glacial/Interglacial Export Production In The Subantarctic South Pacific, Jessica Adamic

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Atmospheric CO2 varied considerably in the past; however, the mechanisms that drive this variability are poorly understood. CO2 is linked to marine primary productivity through the biological carbon pump (BCP), leading to hypotheses that past increases in BCP efficiency in areas such as the Southern Ocean may have contributed to glacial CO2 drawdown (Sarmiento & Toggweiler, 1984). Productivity has varied considerably in the past, but the extent, timing, and impacts remain poorly understood. The Subantarctic South Pacific is an area of the ocean that is crucial to the understanding of both glacial climate and paleo-export productivity. Unfortunately, few studies have …

Scalable Data Clustering Using Gpus, Andrew D. Pangborn May 2010

Scalable Data Clustering Using Gpus, Andrew D. Pangborn

Theses

The computational demands of multivariate clustering grow rapidly, and therefore processing large data sets, like those found in flow cytometry data, is very time consuming on a single CPU. Fortunately these techniques lend themselves naturally to large scale parallel processing. To address the computational demands, graphics processing units, specifically NVIDIA's CUDA framework and Tesla architecture, were investigated as a low-cost, high performance solution to a number of clustering algorithms. C-means and Expectation Maximization with Gaussian mixture models were implemented using the CUDA framework. The algorithm implementations use a hybrid of CUDA, OpenMP, and MPI to scale to many GPUs on …

Imaging Targeted-Agent Binding In Vivo With Two Probes, Brian W. Pogue, Kimberley S. Samkoe, Shannon Hextrum, Julia A. O'Hara, Michael Jermyn, Subhadra Srinivasan, Tayyaba Hasan

Dartmouth Scholarship

An approach to quantitatively image targeted-agent binding rate in vivo is demonstrated with dual-probe injection of both targeted and nontargeted fluorescent dyes. Images of a binding rate constant are created that reveal lower than expected uptake of epidermal growth factor in an orthotopic xenograft pancreas tumor (2.3×10−5 s−1), as compared to the normal pancreas (3.4×10−5 s−1). This approach allows noninvasive assessment of tumor receptor targeting in vivo to determine the expected contrast, spatial localization, and efficacy in therapeutic agent delivery.

Targeting therapeutic drugs to tumors based on their overexpression of cellular receptors is widely researched and has important clinical success. …

Solar Radiation Investigations; A Foundation Study, Alanna Maguire May 2010

Solar Radiation Investigations; A Foundation Study, Alanna Maguire

Doctoral

Skin cancer is a global epidemic that is increasing annually. However, our knowledge of the mechanisms involved in skin carcinogenesis is relatively poor. Investigative studies to date have predominantly employed fluorescent UV A and I or UVB lamps. The information gained from such studies has pioneered this area of research effectively, however, the typical unimodal Gaussian distribution of such irradiators do not reflect that of solar radiation nor do they account for potential waveband interactions. Advancing technologies in solar simulation have opened up this field to more environmentally and biologically relevant exposures, not only in terms of distribution but also …

How Farmers Learn: Implications For Agricultural Educators, Nancy Franz, Fred Piercy, Joseph Donaldson, Robert Richard, Johnnie Westbrook Apr 2010

How Farmers Learn: Implications For Agricultural Educators, Nancy Franz, Fred Piercy, Joseph Donaldson, Robert Richard, Johnnie Westbrook

Journal of Rural Social Sciences

In this participatory action research, guided by a steering committee of farmers and agricultural educators, we examined how farmers learn and identified implications for agricultural educators. Since most educators teach the way they prefer to learn, this research could shape agricultural educators’ practice with farmers. Focus group interviews and surveys with 115 farmers and agricultural educators helped us understand how and why farmers learn and the role of agricultural educators, especially Extension educators, in farmer learning. Farmers articulated a learning process that relies mostly on first-hand experiences motivated by saving time and money, learning about cutting edge research, and engaging …

What Is Due To Others: Speaking And Signifying Subject(S) Of Rape Law, Penelope J. Pether

Working Paper Series

Australian journalist Paul Sheehan's representation of the alleged and convicted immigrant Muslim/Arab rapists he demonises in 'Girls Like You', like his representation of the rape survivors in that text, has much to tell us about the law's production of rape law's speaking and signifying subjects, “real rape” victims and survivors, false accusers and perpetrators. This article uses a variety of texts, including 'Girls Like You', recent Australian rape law jurisprudence and legislative reform, texts involving two controversial recent US rape cases — one from Maryland and one from Nebraska — and a recent UK study on attrition in rape prosecutions, …

Development And Implementation Of A Tissue Specific Microrna Prediction Tool For Identifying Targets Of The Tumor Suppressor Microrna 17-3p, William Budd Apr 2010

Development And Implementation Of A Tissue Specific Microrna Prediction Tool For Identifying Targets Of The Tumor Suppressor Microrna 17-3p, William Budd

Theses and Dissertations

A unique computational approach was undertaken to identify targets of miR-17-3p that impart an oncogenic potential to the cells of the prostate. Utilizing this approach, we identified insulin growth factor receptor 1 (IGF1R) as a potential target of miR-17-3p. IGF1R imparts an oncogenic approach to the cells by helping cells escape apoptosis, become hypertrophic and increase the production of extracellular proteases that allow cells to detach from neighbors. The regulation of insulin growth factor receptor 1 by human microRNA-17-3p was evaluated using a western blot analysis of prostate cancer cell lines. Protein levels were compared in a cell line that …

Steroid Receptor Expression In The Fish Inner Earvaries With Sex, Social Status, And Reproductive State, Karen P. Maruska, Russell D. Fernald Apr 2010

Steroid Receptor Expression In The Fish Inner Earvaries With Sex, Social Status, And Reproductive State, Karen P. Maruska, Russell D. Fernald

Faculty Publications

Background: Gonadal and stress-related steroid hormones are known to influence auditory function across vertebrates but the cellular and molecular mechanisms responsible for steroid-mediated auditory plasticity at the level of the inner ear remain unknown. The presence of steroid receptors in the ear suggests a direct pathway for hormones to act on the peripheral auditory system, but little is known about which receptors are expressed in the ear or whether their expression levels change with internal physiological state or external social cues. We used qRT-PCR to measure mRNA expression levels of multiple steroid receptor subtypes (estrogen receptors: ERα, ERβa, ERβb; androgen …

Molecular Analysis Of B3galtl In A Patient With Peters' Plus Syndrome, Taiyabah Naeem Apr 2010

Molecular Analysis Of B3galtl In A Patient With Peters' Plus Syndrome, Taiyabah Naeem

Undergraduate University Honors Capstones

Chromosomal rearrangement such as microdeletions or microduplications, which can alter the dosage of one or more genes, are commonly seen in patients with multiple congenital anomalies (MCA). Alternatively, the discovery of a microdeletion may sometimes uncover an autosomal recessive disorder if the gene on the non-deleted allele carries a mutation. This study reports molecular analysis of a patient with MCAs, including an enlarged head, developmental delay, clouding of the corneas, and short stature. Peters Plus Syndrome (PPS) is characterized as an autosomal recessive disorder. Phenotypical symptoms include various eye abnormalities and structural organ defects. The B3GGALTL has been found to …

Costs, Norms, And Inertia: Avoiding An Anticommons For Proprietary Research Tools, Rebecca S. Eisenberg Apr 2010

Costs, Norms, And Inertia: Avoiding An Anticommons For Proprietary Research Tools, Rebecca S. Eisenberg

Book Chapters

A decade ago the scientific community was sounding alann bells about the impact of intellectual property on the ability of scientists to do their work. Protracted negotiations over access to patented mice and genes, scientific databases, and tangible research materials all pointed toward the same conclusion: that intellectual property claims were undennining traditional sharing norms to the detriment of science. Michael Heller and I highlighted one dimension of this concern: that too many intellectual property rights in 'upstream' research results could paradoxically restrict 'downstream' research and product development by making it too costly and burdensome to collect all the necessary …
