Hidden Markov Model With Binned Duration And Its Application, Zuliang Jiang May 2010

Hidden Markov Model With Binned Duration And Its Application, Zuliang Jiang

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Hidden Markov models (HMM) have been widely used in various applications such as speech processing and bioinformatics. However, the standard hidden Markov model requires state occupancy durations to be geometrically distributed, which can be inappropriate in some real-world applications where the distributions on state intervals deviate signi cantly from the geometric distribution, such as multi-modal distributions and heavy-tailed distributions. The hidden Markov model with duration (HMMD) avoids this limitation by explicitly incor- porating the appropriate state duration distribution, at the price of signi cant computational expense. As a result, the applications of HMMD are still quited limited. In this work, …

Biopsychosocial Factors In Chronic Spine-Related Pain: Contributions To Pain Intensity And Perceived Disability, Jonathan S. Ord May 2010

Biopsychosocial Factors In Chronic Spine-Related Pain: Contributions To Pain Intensity And Perceived Disability, Jonathan S. Ord

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Psychological and contextual factors play an important role in the development and maintenance of chronic spine-related pain, and effective treatment of pain-related conditions requires an understanding of how these factors contribute to pain and disability. The present study examined the relative contributions of spine pathology, psychological complications, and demographic factors to perceived pain intensity and disability in patients with chronic spine-related pain. Because most patients were assessed in the context of a compensable injury, exaggeration of symptoms and disability was systematically controlled for using multiple validity indicators. A high prevalence of psychological complications was observed in the present sample. Analysis …

Harness Electricity, Free The Mules: Animal Rights And The Electrification Of The Streetcars In New Orleans, Brittany Anne Mulla May 2010

Harness Electricity, Free The Mules: Animal Rights And The Electrification Of The Streetcars In New Orleans, Brittany Anne Mulla

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Prior to the streetcar lines being electrified in the late 1800s, equines pulled the cars. The quadrupeds that pulled the horsecars in New Orleans, Louisiana, were area specific: New Orleans had mules, not horses. The mule in the South is typically associated with the rural South; however, in nineteenth century urban New Orleans the mule played an integral part in daily commerce and society. New Orleanians admiration for the animals turned into concern when the rigors of work became apparent to the public, as mules suffered from the abuses of drivers, the seedy practices of street railway companies, malnutrition, and …

Opioid Addiction And Pregnancy: Potential Effects Of Substitution Therapies On Developmental Myelination, Andrew Eschenroeder May 2010

Opioid Addiction And Pregnancy: Potential Effects Of Substitution Therapies On Developmental Myelination, Andrew Eschenroeder

Theses and Dissertations

While most cells of the central nervous system (CNS) express opioid receptors, the role of the endogenous opioid system in CNS development remains poorly understood. Identification of opioid functions during brain maturation is particularly crucial in light of the increasing trend in opioid abuse and the use of opioid drugs during pregnancy. New substitution therapies in pregnant opioid addicts include buprenorphine, a mu opioid receptor partial agonist and kappa opioid receptor antagonist. However, while clinical studies demonstrated buprenorphine efficacy in reducing neonatal withdrawal symptoms, there is a lack of information on the potential effects of this drug on brain development. …

Cell Wall/Surface Proteome Of Candida Albicans: Its Application In Rapid Identification Of Yeast Species By Mass Signature And Characterization By In Vitro And In Vivo Chemical Labelings, Jiang Qian

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Candida albicans is an opportunistic fungal pathogen that may cause mucutaneous infection and/or disseminated candidasis if the host defense system is impaired (such as those in HIV patients). Cell surface of C. albicans is the frontier where initial interplay between host-pathogen takes place and therefore is of great importance in understanding the mechanism of hostpathogen interaction. MALDI-TOF-MS analysis of intact fungal cells yielded mass signatures for rapid species differentiation, strain grouping and yeast morphogenesis monitoring. Cell surface biotinylations at low temperature (4°C), enzymatic digestion of the intact fungal cell surface proteins ("whole cell shaving"), biotin-avidin affinity enrichment of biotinylated peptides, …

Carbon Dioxide And Hydrogen Sulfide Emission Factors Applicable To Wastewater Wet Wells, Madhuri Mudragaddam May 2010

Carbon Dioxide And Hydrogen Sulfide Emission Factors Applicable To Wastewater Wet Wells, Madhuri Mudragaddam

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Transport of wastewater in sewer networks causes potential problems associated with gases which include ammonia, carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, hydrogen sulfide and methane, in regard to odor nuisance, irritation, toxicity, and microbially induced corrosion. The extent of these problems depends on the emission rates of gases in the sewer atmosphere. To limit these kinds of problems an estimate of the gases emitted from the sewer network is to be known. In consideration to the above mentioned problems, a research has been taken up to estimate the two gases, namely, carbon dioxide and hydrogen sulfide from sewer wet wells. In this …

Households And Neighborhoods Among Free People Of Color In New Orleans: A View From The Census, 1850-1860, Frank Joseph Lovato May 2010

Households And Neighborhoods Among Free People Of Color In New Orleans: A View From The Census, 1850-1860, Frank Joseph Lovato

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Historians have debated to what extent the free people of color in New Orleans were members of a wealthy privileged elite or part of a middle or working class in the South's largest antebellum city. This study steps outside the debate to suggest that analysis of the censuses of 1850 and 1860 shows correlations between neighborhoods, household structures, and occupations that reveal a heterogeneous population that eludes simple definitions. In particular this study focuses on mixed-race households to shed light on this segment of the free colored population that is mostly unstudied and generally misrepresented. This study also finds that …

Cognitive Biases In Childhood Anxiety Disorders: Do Interpretive And Judgment Biases Distinguish Anxious Youth From Their Non-Anxious Peers?, Melinda Cannon May 2010

Cognitive Biases In Childhood Anxiety Disorders: Do Interpretive And Judgment Biases Distinguish Anxious Youth From Their Non-Anxious Peers?, Melinda Cannon

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to examine cognitive biases in clinically anxious children compared to normal children and to determine if cognitive biases could discriminate anxious youth from non-anxious youth. Two specific cognitive biases were the focus of the present study—interpretive biases (i.e., the tendency to interpret neutral stimuli in a negative way) and judgment biases (i.e., a lowered estimate of one's ability to cope with a threatening situation). Twenty-four youth comprised the anxiety disordered sample and were each matched to two normal youth on four demographic variables (gender, age, ethnicity, and family income level), thus the matched comparison …

Earthbound Humors: An Ecocritical Approach To Melancholy In As You Like It And Hamlet, Angela Brown May 2010

Earthbound Humors: An Ecocritical Approach To Melancholy In As You Like It And Hamlet, Angela Brown

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Ecocriticism explores the way in which artists interact with, interpret and represent the natural world. The concept of “nature,” according to ecocriticism, goes beyond simply flora and fauna, extending to human nature as well. In Shakespeare's England, a person's nature was determined by his bodily humors, so the melancholy humor particularly lends itself to an ecocritical approach because it is inextricably linked to the natural world. Transcending genre, melancholy is not limited to the green world of comedy but rather appears in tragedy as well. In As You Like It, the melancholy Jaques offers a foil for the forest teeming …

Identification And Characterization Of A Second Wolfram Syndrome Gene, Sami Amr May 2010

Identification And Characterization Of A Second Wolfram Syndrome Gene, Sami Amr

Theses and Dissertations

Wolfram Syndrome (WFS) is a debilitating autosomal recessive neurodegenerative disorder characterized by juvenile onset insulin dependent diabetes mellitus (DM) and optic atrophy (OA) as well as a number of neurological and endocrine complications that result in early death due to respiratory complications. Previous research has mapped Wolfram syndrome to chromosome 4p16.1 and the disease has been attributed to mutations in the WFS1 gene affecting the WFS1 protein (wolframin), an ER membrane glycoprotein that plays an important role in the unfolded protein response (UPR) and in intracellular Ca2+ homeostasis. An additional locus for WFS on chromosome 4q22-24 was identified by linkage …

Examining The Interface Between Alcohol Expectancies, Psychophysiological Reactivity To Alcohol Picture Cues, And Risk For Substance Use Disorders, Ashlee C. Carter May 2010

Examining The Interface Between Alcohol Expectancies, Psychophysiological Reactivity To Alcohol Picture Cues, And Risk For Substance Use Disorders, Ashlee C. Carter

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The study examined the overlap between cognitive and affective measures of alcohol expectancies as they related to risk for developing alcohol use disorders. It was hypothesized that cognitive-based, paper-and-pencil measures and appetitive psychophysiological reactivity to alcohol cues would correlate and independently correlate to drinking behavior in a sample of college drinkers. It was also hypothesized that genetic risk would impact the relationship between upstream and downstream expectancy measures, given that children of alcoholics displayed blunted reactivity to appetitive cues.

A sample of 137 college drinkers (67 males; mean age = 20.23 ± 1.61) reporting a range of drinking behavior (mean …
