Thermal Limitations On Chinook Salmon Spawning Habitat In The Northern Extent Of Their Range, Samantha Kristin Decker May 2010

Thermal Limitations On Chinook Salmon Spawning Habitat In The Northern Extent Of Their Range, Samantha Kristin Decker

Fisheries

Pacific salmon (Oncorhynchus) habitat models attempt to balance research efficiency with management effectiveness, however, model transferability between regions remains elusive. To develop efficient habitat models, we must understand the critical elements that limit habitat. At the northern edge of the geographic range for Chinook salmon, O. tschawytscha, water temperature is a probably a limiting habitat factor. This study investigated the spatial and temporal correspondence between water temperature and Chinook salmon spawning on the Chena River, Alaska. Water temperatures were monitored at 21 stations across 220 river kilometers during the 2006 and 2007 spawning seasons and compared to known thermal requirements …

Polymorphism In The Duck Mx Gene And Association With Influenza Infection, Danielle M. Dillon May 2010

Polymorphism In The Duck Mx Gene And Association With Influenza Infection, Danielle M. Dillon

Biological Sciences

"Myxovirus-resistant (Mx) proteins are induced by interferon and inhibit viral replication as part of the innate immune response to viral infection in many vertebrates. Influenza A virus appears to be especially susceptible to Mx antiviral effects. We characterized exon 13 and the 3' UTR of the Mx gene in wild ducks, the natural reservoir of influenza virus and explored its potential relevance to influenza infection. We observed a wide range of intra- and interspecies variation. Total nucleotide diversity per site (π/bp) was 0.00 14, 0.0027, 0.0044, 0.005 1, and 0.0061 in mallards, northern shovelers, northern pintails, American wigeon, and American …

Investigating Controls Over Methane Production And Bubbling From Interior Alaskan Lakes Using Stable Isotopes And Radiocarbon Ages, Laura S. Brosius May 2010

Investigating Controls Over Methane Production And Bubbling From Interior Alaskan Lakes Using Stable Isotopes And Radiocarbon Ages, Laura S. Brosius

Biological Sciences

"Large uncertainties in first-order estimates of the magnitude of CH₄ emissions from lakes (global lakes: 8-48 Tg CH₄ yr⁻¹ Bastviken et al. 2004) result from variation in ebullition (bubbling) rates between and within lakes. Based on a comparison of two interior Alaska thermokarst lakes, I suggest that variation in CH₄ ebullition observed within and between lakes can be explained by a few key differences in substrate quality and sediment density. Killarney Lake, which has a 130 cm-thick modern sediment package, emitted 120 mg CH₄ M⁻² day⁻¹ produced from a mixture of modern C and permafrost C sources, while Goldstream Lake, …

Numerical Investigation Of Gas Sampling From Fluidized Beds, John Grace, Tingwen Li, Yongmin Zhang, Xiaotao Bi

The 13th International Conference on Fluidization - New Paradigm in Fluidization Engineering

Gas mixing in a tall narrow fluidized bed operated in the slugging fluidization regime is studied with the aid of computational fluid dynamics. Three-dimensional numerical simulations are performed with an Eulerian-Eulerian model. Predicted axial and radial tracer concentration profiles for various operating conditions are generally in good agreement with experimental data from the literature. Different field variables including voidage, tracer concentration, and gas velocity at upstream and downstream levels are analysed to study gas mixing. Mean tracer concentrations in the dense phase and the bubble phase are evaluated and significant differences between them are found. The time-mean concentration is weighted …

Hydrodynamic Characteristics Of Liquid-Solid Fluidization Of Binary Mixtures In Tapered Beds, Sankarshana Talapuru Dr, J S N Murthy, S Nandana, Phani Kiran S V G R, V Ramesh

The 13th International Conference on Fluidization - New Paradigm in Fluidization Engineering

The problems associated with fluidization in cylindrical beds like entrainment of particles, limitation of operating velocity could be overcome by adopting tapered beds. There have been no systematic studies reported on fluidization behavior of binary mixtures wherein the effect of size ratio is considered on the hydrodynamic characteristics of liquid-solid fluidization in tapered beds. In the present work, an attempt has been made to study the fluidization behavior and hydrodynamic characteristics of liquid-solid fluidization of binary mixtures of size ratios ranging from 1.2 to 5.13 using sand of different sizes in tapered beds of apex angles 50, 100 and 150. …

Development Of A Continuous Nanoparticle Coating With Electrospraying, N. Ellis, J. Ruud Van Ommen, C.U. Yurteri

The 13th International Conference on Fluidization - New Paradigm in Fluidization Engineering

Coating of micron-sized particles (host particles) with nanoparticles can result in modifying the surface properties of host particles leading to various applications. This work presents a novel concept of combining the electrospraying of nanoparticles onto the charged particles entrained out of the fluidized bed for developing a continuous coating process. By controlling the processes to effectively charge and contact particles using electric forces, we are able to fine-tune the properties of the obtained nano-coated particles.

The effect of the distributor design on the gas bypass and solids circulation was investigated for the flat, cylindrical and conical gas distributors in a cold model internal circulating fluidized bed to provide design and operating criteria for the future application of ICFB deNOx reactor. A high gas bypass ratio from the annulus to draft tube and low from the draft tube to annulus were identified for all tested distributors. The solids circulation rates increased with the increase of both annulus and draft tube gas velocities, where the conical distributor exhibited a more flexible and stable operation. The particle size …

Experiments And Modelling Of Micro-Jet Assisted Fluidization Of Nanoparticles, J. Ruud Van Ommen, David M. King, Alan Weimer, Robert Pfeffer, Berend Van Wachem May 2010

Experiments And Modelling Of Micro-Jet Assisted Fluidization Of Nanoparticles, J. Ruud Van Ommen, David M. King, Alan Weimer, Robert Pfeffer, Berend Van Wachem

The 13th International Conference on Fluidization - New Paradigm in Fluidization Engineering

The fluidization of nanoparticle agglomerates can be largely improved by using downward pointing micronozzles, creating a high-velocity jet, as experimentally shown. By discrete particle simulations – treating the agglomerates as single particles – we show that the main reason is probably the reduction of the agglomerate size by agglomerate-agglomerate collisions.

Investigation Of Change Of Volumetric Flow In Fluidized-Bed Reactors, Andrés Mahecha-Botero, Franz Haseidl, Alexander Nguyen, Tingwen Li, John R. Grace May 2010

Investigation Of Change Of Volumetric Flow In Fluidized-Bed Reactors, Andrés Mahecha-Botero, Franz Haseidl, Alexander Nguyen, Tingwen Li, John R. Grace

The 13th International Conference on Fluidization - New Paradigm in Fluidization Engineering

Volumetric flow can change due to such factors as variation in the number of moles due to reaction, feed distribution, change of phase, membranes and changes in temperature and pressure. This change in volumetric flow was investigated by varying the fluidized-bed pressure in a two-dimensional steel column. Pressure was impulsively adjusted, showing large transient voids during the transitions after rapid growth of the existing bubbles. The effects of sudden depressurization as well as elevated pressure fluidization were also investigated.

Cfd Simulation Of A Liquid-Fluidized Bed Of Binary Particles, Long Fan, John Grace, Norman Epstein

The 13th International Conference on Fluidization - New Paradigm in Fluidization Engineering

The ability of computational fluid dynamics to predict the expansion and segregation of a binary solids mixture in a liquid-solid fluidized bed is investigated. Unsteady laminar flow is simulated by a modified two-dimensional Eulerian-Eulerian model in Fluent 6.3. The predictions are compared with experimental results for binary particles in the same narrow (1.00-1.18 mm) size range, but with different densities, 1600 and 1900 kg/m3, fluidized by water (1). The voidages and heights of two layers which form, each dominated by one particle species, were found to be sensitive to small changes in particle properties (diameter, density, sphericity), as well as …

Life Sciences Faculty Research

BACKGROUND:

Minimotifs are short peptide sequences within one protein, which are recognized by other proteins or molecules. While there are now several minimotif databases, they are incomplete. There are reports of many minimotifs in the primary literature, which have yet to be annotated, while entirely novel minimotifs continue to be published on a weekly basis. Our recently proposed function and sequence syntax for minimotifs enables us to build a general tool that will facilitate structured annotation and management of minimotif data from the biomedical literature.

RESULTS:

We have built the MimoSA application for minimotif annotation. The application supports management of …

Processing Of Pure Vegetable Oils In A Continuous Fcc Pilot Plant, Peter Bielansky, Alexander Reichhold, Christoph Schönberger

The 13th International Conference on Fluidization - New Paradigm in Fluidization Engineering

The basic objective of the presented work is the application of vegetable oils as an alternative CO2-neutral feedstock for fluid catalytic cracking (FCC). The experimental test program was conducted in a fully continuously operated FCC pilot plant with intern CFB-design at Vienna University of Technology. Vegetable oils with the highest global production (soy bean oil, palm oil and rapeseed oil) were used. The addition of vegetable oil had hardly any influence on the cracking process. The gasoline achieved is oxygen free at high octane numbers.

Dem Fluidization Of Smart Particles, Amit Suri, Masayuki Horio

The 13th International Conference on Fluidization - New Paradigm in Fluidization Engineering

Numerical simulations using DEM for smart particles/bodies having a capability to induce a repulsive force on the particle based on the cognition were simulated. A particle-particle interaction type repulsive force was used to induce self fluidization and it was found that if the repulsive force is sufficiently high, fluidization of particles can be achieved.

Origin Of The Polycomb Repressive Complex 2 And Gene Silencing By An E(Z) Homolog In The Unicellular Alga Chlamydomonas, Scott Shaver, J. Armando Casas-Mollano, Ronald L. Cerny, Heriberto D. Cerutti May 2010

Origin Of The Polycomb Repressive Complex 2 And Gene Silencing By An E(Z) Homolog In The Unicellular Alga Chlamydomonas, Scott Shaver, J. Armando Casas-Mollano, Ronald L. Cerny, Heriberto D. Cerutti

Center for Plant Science Innovation: Faculty Publications

Polycomb group proteins play an essential role in the maintenance of cell identity and the regulation of development in both animals and plants. The Polycomb Repressive Complex 2 (PRC2) is involved in the establishment of transcriptionally silent chromatin states, in part through its ability to methylate lysine 27 of histone H3 by the Enhancer of zeste [E(z)] subunit. The absence of PRC2 in unicellular model fungi and its function in the repression of genes vital for the development of higher eukaryotes led to the proposal that this complex may have evolved together with the emergence of multicellularity. However, we report …

RURALS: Review of Undergraduate Research in Agricultural and Life Sciences

Plectranthus parviflorus, common Swedish ivy does not lose leaves when it is deprived of nitrogen. Instead this plant retains its yellow leaves and upon reintroduction of nitrogen will re-green and start to grow. In two experiments, rooted cuttings of common Swedish ivy were grown with (150 ppm N) and without nitrogen for 3 weeks. After some plants were sampled the others were either switched or kept at 0 or 150 ppm N and allowed to grow for another 3 weeks. After another sampling, plants were again switched or kept at 0 or 150 ppm N for a final 3 weeks. …
