Diversity Of Oligotrichia And Choreotrichia Ciliates In Coastal Marine Sediments And In Overlying Plankton, Mary Doherty, Maiko Tamura, Jan A.C. Vriezen, George B. Mcmanus, Laura A. Katz
Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications
Elucidating the relationship between ciliate communities in the benthos and the plankton is critical to understanding ciliate diversity in marine systems. Although data for many lineages are sparse, at least some members of the dominant marine ciliate clades Oligotrichia and Choreotrichia can be found in both plankton and benthos, in the latter either as cysts or active forms. In this study, we developed a molecular approach to address the relationship between the diversity of ciliates in the plankton and those of the underlying benthos in the same locations. Samples from plankton and sediments were compared across three sites along the …

Regulation Of Pim1 Under Hypoxia In Prostate Cancer, Eva Sahakian
Regulation Of Pim1 Under Hypoxia In Prostate Cancer, Eva Sahakian
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
A defining characteristic of solid tumors is the capacity to divide and spread under conditions of nutrient deprivation and limited oxygen availability. These microenvironmental stresses arise from structural abnormalities in tumor vessels that lead to aberrant microcirculation. Hypoxia acts as a physiological “selection pressure” in the progression of cancer by activating pathways and enhancing the expression of specific genes in tumor cells which eventually diminish their apoptotic potential. Ultimately, hypoxic microenvironment functions as a “stress factor”, selecting cells with the ability to survive and divide under anoxic conditions. The members of the PIM family of cytoplasmic serine threonine kinases are …
Tomorrow's Doctors And Today's Changes: Neo-Liberal Discourses And The Daily Practices Of Medical Interns At A State University Hospital In Cairo, Salma Shokralla
Tomorrow's Doctors And Today's Changes: Neo-Liberal Discourses And The Daily Practices Of Medical Interns At A State University Hospital In Cairo, Salma Shokralla
Theses and Dissertations
As the State shifts towards liberalization policies in the health sector, debates surrounding the outcomes of medical encounters came to the core of public debate. To understand changes that are influencing medical encounters and their outcomes, this study focused on the socialization process medical students go through to become practicing physicians. A public university hospital (Al Kasr Al Ainy) where medical students get their practical training was the focus of this study. Courses on physician-patient encounters, newly implemented under the government's education reform plan, were analyzed as an example of how discourses are produced to shift the responsibility of public …
Time-Cost-Quality Trade-Off Analysis For Construction Projects, Mahmoud Elbassuony
Time-Cost-Quality Trade-Off Analysis For Construction Projects, Mahmoud Elbassuony
Theses and Dissertations
The main objective of construction projects is to finish the project according to an available budget, within a planned schedule, and achieving a pre-specified extent of quality. Therefore, time, cost, and quality are considered the most important attributes of construction projects. The purpose of this study is to incorporate quality into the traditional two-dimensional time-cost trade-off (TCT) in order to develop an advanced three-dimensional time-cost-quality trade-off (TCQT) approach. Time, cost, and quality of construction projects are interrelated and have impacts on each other. It is a challenging task to strike a balance among these three conflicting objectives of construction projects …
Investigating The Mechanical And Physical Properties Of Wood Plastic Composites (Wpc), Mokhtar Aly Nour El-Din Kamel
Investigating The Mechanical And Physical Properties Of Wood Plastic Composites (Wpc), Mokhtar Aly Nour El-Din Kamel
Theses and Dissertations
Wood and plastic wastes have been a major environmental concern not only in Egypt but also worldwide. Plastic wastes are classified as recyclable plastic such as bottles and non-recyclable plastic such as plastic bags especially contaminated bags (rejected plastic). Plastic waste is a non biodegradable material calling for an appropriate method of disposal; however, the current approach adopted in Egypt relies mainly on throwing away in dumpsites. Therefore, it is a costless raw material which needs to be invested. In this thesis, the wood waste and the rejected plastic were recycled to produce new useful product; Wood Plastic Composite (WPC), …

Entrepreneurial Experiments In Science Policy: Analyzing The Human Genome Project, Kenneth G. Huang, Fiona E. Murray
Entrepreneurial Experiments In Science Policy: Analyzing The Human Genome Project, Kenneth G. Huang, Fiona E. Murray
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
We re-conceptualize the role of science policy makers, envisioning and illustrating their move from being simple investors in scientific projects to entrepreneurs who create the conditions for entrepreneurial experiments and initiate them. We argue that reframing science policy around the notion of conducting entrepreneurial experiments – experiments that increase the diversity of technical, organizational and institutional arrangements in which scientific research is conducted – can provide policy makers with a wider repertoire of effective interventions. To illustrate the power of this approach, we analyze the Human Genome Project (HGP) as a set of successful, entrepreneurial experiments in organizational and institutional …

Emergency Management Training And Exercises For Transportation Agency Operations, Mti Report 09-17, Frances L. Edwards, Daniel C. Goodrich
Emergency Management Training And Exercises For Transportation Agency Operations, Mti Report 09-17, Frances L. Edwards, Daniel C. Goodrich
Mineta Transportation Institute
Training and exercises are an important part of emergency management. Plans are developed based on threat assessment, but they are not useful unless staff members are trained on how to use the plan, and then practice that training. Exercises are also essential for ensuring that the plan is effective, and outcomes from exercises are used to improve the plan. Exercises have been an important part of gauging the preparedness of response organizations since Civil Defense days when full-scale exercises often included the community. Today there are various types of exercises that can be used to evaluate the preparedness of public …

Modification Of An Asynchronous Dexterous Hand Movement Decoder For Hardware Implementation, Adam Kevin Bosen
Modification Of An Asynchronous Dexterous Hand Movement Decoder For Hardware Implementation, Adam Kevin Bosen
Theses
One of the goals of modern prosthetics research is to provide natural, neurologically driven control of a prosthetic device, preferably in a portable format. Previously, an algorithm for asynchronously decoding individuated finger and wrist movements from recordings of neural activity in the primary motor cortex was developed by Aggarwal et al. and implemented in software. The first objective of this work was to determine what effect simplifying Aggarwal's algorithm by using linear Artificial neural networks instead of nonlinear ones would have on movement detection and classification accuracy. The simplified algorithm developed in this work was demonstrated to achieve movement detection …
Habitat Relationships Of Breeding Birds In Bottomland Hardwood Forests Of The Altamaha River, Georgia, Jared Andrew Zimmerman
Habitat Relationships Of Breeding Birds In Bottomland Hardwood Forests Of The Altamaha River, Georgia, Jared Andrew Zimmerman
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
Bottomland hardwood forests (bottomlands) dominate most of the river floodplains and lowlands of the southeastern United States. These vanishing and often degraded forests provide habitat for at least seventy species of breeding birds. However, little is known about habitat associations of breeding birds, specifically within mature, closed-canopy bottomlands. It is often assumed that once bottomlands become mature, closed-canopy forests, that they are essentially identical from the perspective of breeding birds. To test this assumption, I examined habitat associations of the overall breeding bird community as well as ten priority species within the little-studied mature bottomlands of the Altamaha River, Georgia. …
Synthesis, Characterisation And Antimicrobial Activity Of Novel Phosphine Stablised Silver (1) Dicarboxylate Complexes, Vidya Dixit
Doctoral
The α, ω-dicarboxylic acids HOOC-(CH2)n-COOH (where n = 1-11) reacted smoothly with [Ag(CH3COO)] to yield 11 novel silver dicarboxylate complexes. These silver dicarboxylates were reacted with triphenylphosphine (PPh3) in 1:2.5, 1:4 and 1:6 molar ratios resulting in the isolation of 30 novel silver dicarboxylate triphenylphosphine derivatives. X-ray crystal structures for nine of these complexes were determined showing a variation in the structural motifs across the series with mononuclear, dinuclear, polynuclear and polymeric species being generated. When the 11 novel silver dicarboxylate complexes were reacted with bis-(diphenylphosphino)methane (dppm) in a 1:2 molar ratio 11 novel complexes were isolated. The complexes were …
An Exploration Of Health Professional Support For Breastfeeding, Barbara Whelan
An Exploration Of Health Professional Support For Breastfeeding, Barbara Whelan
Doctoral
Despite research consistently demonstrating the benefits of breastfeeding, Ireland has one of the lowest rates of breastfeeding in Europe with rates at discharge from hospital being 45% (Health Research and Information Division, 2009). Increasing emphasis is being placed on the role of health professionals in promoting and supporting breastfeeding (Sikorski et al., 2003). Little data are available in Ireland regarding health professionals’ perspectives on breastfeeding and women’s experience of professional support. The research consisted of two phases, a mixed methods study exploring health professional support for breastfeeding and an evaluation of an intervention to raise awareness of breastfeeding amongst health …
Sexual Selection And Plumage In The Polymorphic White-Throated Sparrow, Nathan Rathbun
Sexual Selection And Plumage In The Polymorphic White-Throated Sparrow, Nathan Rathbun
All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Feather coloration has been known to be connected with sexual selection for many years. It also provides an opportunity to study evolution, focusing on sexual selection and natural selection. Plumage is affected by both of these forces and the equilibrium is where these forces balance. The white-throated sparrow gives us a unique opportunity to observe the effects of the different strengths of these forces within a species. First, I established that there were differences in plumage characteristics between the morphs and sexes. White males had the brightest white and darkest black feathers. White females and tan males were the next …
Haitian Zombie, Myth, And Modern Identity, Kette Thomas
Haitian Zombie, Myth, And Modern Identity, Kette Thomas
Michigan Tech Publications, Part 1
In her article "Haitian Zombie, Myth, and Modern Identity" Kette Thomas analyzes texts by Zora Neale Hurston, Alfred Metraux, and Wade Davis. In these narratives we are re-introduced to the zombie not as a metaphor for lost consciousness, but, rather, as a common system that replaces personal subjectivity with an influence alien to our natural development. The discourse on subjectivity has become a central focus in the modern era but attention to fiction in "third world" cultures is neglected because they are studied almost exclusively through historical, political, sociological, or anthropological lenses or because their collective identities leads scholars to …

Epidermal Neural Crest Stem Cell (Epi-Ncsc)--Mediated Recovery Of Sensory Function In A Mouse Model Of Spinal Cord Injury, Yao Fei Hu, Krishnaj Gourab, Clive Wells, Oliver Clives, Brian D. Schmit, Maya Sieber-Blum
Biomedical Engineering Faculty Research and Publications
Here we show that epidermal neural crest stem cell (EPI-NCSC) transplants in the contused spinal cord caused a 24% improvement in sensory connectivity and a substantial recovery of touch perception. Furthermore we present a novel method for the ex vivo expansion of EPI-NCSC into millions of stem cells that takes advantage of the migratory ability of neural crest stem cells and is based on a new culture medium and the use of microcarriers. Functional improvement was shown by two independent methods, spinal somatosensory evoked potentials (SpSEP) and the Semmes-Weinstein touch test. Subsets of transplanted cells differentiated into myelinating oligodendrocytes. Unilateral …

School of Biological and Marine Sciences
Current research into ocean acidification is mainly being carried out using short-term experiments whereby CO2 levels are manipulated in aquaria and enclosures. We have adopted a new approach in our studies of the effects of ocean acidification on Mediterranean marine biodiversity by using volcanic carbon dioxide vent systems as ‘natural laboratories’ as they cause long-term changes in seawater carbonate chemistry. A range of organisms, including macroalgae, seagrasses, invertebrates, and selected scleractinians and bryozoans have now been investigated in a shallow area located off the island of Ischia (Castello Aragonese, Tyrrhenian Sea, Italy). Our in situ observations give support to concerns, …

Public Perceptions Of Using Woody Biomass As A Renewable Energy Source, Richard R. Plate, Martha C. Monroe, Annie Oxarart
Public Perceptions Of Using Woody Biomass As A Renewable Energy Source, Richard R. Plate, Martha C. Monroe, Annie Oxarart
Journal of Extension
Woody biomass is an energy source that may play a significant role in reducing greenhouse gas emissions. One barrier to using wood for energy is public perceptions. This article describes the results of a needs assessment survey that was used to develop a public outreach program. Survey responses from 298 residents of Alachua County, Florida suggest that respondents do not know about using wood for energy, are willing to be engaged in the decision-making process, and are generally in favor of using waste wood as an energy source. Respondents are most concerned about sustaining nearby forests and air quality.
