The (Mis)Categorization Of Sex In Anglo-American Cases Of Transsexual Marriage, John Parsi Jun 2010

The (Mis)Categorization Of Sex In Anglo-American Cases Of Transsexual Marriage, John Parsi

Michigan Law Review

The United States' promise to establish equality for all has been challenged by post-operative transsexuals seeking recognition in their acquired sex. The birth certificate is the legal gateway to changing other legal documents; but the process for changing the birth certificate varies widely from state to state. This lack of national uniformity makes post-operative transsexuals' recognition of their acquired sex complicated at best and impossible at worst. This Note details the legal progression from non-recognition to recognition of post-operative transsexuals' acquired sex in the United Kingdom and through the European Court of Human Rights. The Note goes on to explore …

Factors Influencing Parasite-Related Supression Of Mating Behavior In The Isopod Caecidotea Intermedius, Kimberly Mormann Jun 2010

Factors Influencing Parasite-Related Supression Of Mating Behavior In The Isopod Caecidotea Intermedius, Kimberly Mormann

College of Liberal Arts & Social Sciences Theses and Dissertations

Parasites with indirect life cycles often facilitate changes in their intermediate hosts in ways that increase the likelihood of transmission to their definitive hosts. Acanthocephalan infections typically correlate with altered pigmentation, antipredatory behavior, and changes in mating behavior in arthropod intermediate hosts that increase risks of predation by definitive vertebrate hosts. Additionally, these changes have been shown to associate with the developmental stage of the parasite which facilitates the likelihood of survival in the final host. These changes have been proposed to due to direct manipulation by the parasite, host counteradaptation to minimize the costs of infection, or are an …

The Role Of Culture In The Somatic Response Of Peer-Victimized Latino Youth, William Martinez Jun 2010

The Role Of Culture In The Somatic Response Of Peer-Victimized Latino Youth, William Martinez

College of Liberal Arts & Social Sciences Theses and Dissertations

There is emerging evidence that Latino youth report a higher prevalence of somatic complaints than children from other ethnic groups. Although culture has been implicated to explain these somatization differences, few studies have investigated the extent to which cultural factors actually influence the way Latino youth respo0nd to stressful events. The present study employed the problem suppression-facilitation model to posit that a Latino cultural orientation plays a moderational role in the relationship between peer victimization and physical symptoms. The present sample consisted of 134 Latino youth ranging in age from 10 to 14 years old. Analyses were conducted using structural …

Thomas Aquinas, The Real Distinction Between Esse And Essence, And Overcoming The Conceptual Imperialism, Andrew Thomas Lazella Jun 2010

Thomas Aquinas, The Real Distinction Between Esse And Essence, And Overcoming The Conceptual Imperialism, Andrew Thomas Lazella

College of Liberal Arts & Social Sciences Theses and Dissertations

"Thomas Aquinas, The Real Distinction Between Esse and Essence, and Overcoming the Conceptual Imperialism of Metaphysics" treats the relation between thought and being within medieval metaphysics, especially as it relates to the distinction between essence and existence. The dissertation argues against a prominent strand of distinction between whatness (i.e., essence) and thatness (i.e., existence) constitutes a rupture with the dominant essentialism of metaphysics. I contend such a distinction, which would make existence into an act of being irreducible to the categories of conceptual thought and knowledge, introduces a signifier that, in its primary and proper signification of God, deprives creates …

A Feminist Analysis Of Mental Health Providers' Perspectives Of Latina Women, Caroline Ruth Smith Jun 2010

A Feminist Analysis Of Mental Health Providers' Perspectives Of Latina Women, Caroline Ruth Smith

College of Liberal Arts & Social Sciences Theses and Dissertations

Researchers have documented that Latina women involved in the mental health system face a number of barriers to access to services and ongoing use of services. Latina women involved in the mental health system are often viewed as at-risk. This study challenges traditional pathological views of Latina women in the mental health system. This study uses a feminist analysis to examine mental health providers’ perception of Latina women. It views Latina women as mental health system survivors and suggests that resilience and strength-based perspectives can transform the treatment of Latina women. Secondary data from twenty-two interviews with agency directors, psychiatrists, …

Representations Of Women Athletes In The Media, Sarah Kustok Jun 2010

Representations Of Women Athletes In The Media, Sarah Kustok

College of Communication Theses and Dissertations

This study took a critical historical content analysis of the media’s coverage of women’s athletics through the 1990’s and into the early part of the 2000’s. Not only was there massive growth in the quantity of coverage for women’s sports, but specifically for the U.S. Women’s soccer team. As media depictions showed this particular team displaying both masculine and feminine characteristics on and off the field, the idea of gender fluidity proved to be accepted and cherished by society. It is possible for women to perform or enact traditionally masculine or feminine identities throughout their daily lives. The U.S. Women’s …

Stopping The Wind-An Exploration Of The Hawaiian Sovereignty Movmement, Krystle R. Klein Jun 2010

Stopping The Wind-An Exploration Of The Hawaiian Sovereignty Movmement, Krystle R. Klein

College of Communication Theses and Dissertations

Hawaiian philosophy attributes certain God elements to its existence. The sun symbolizes Life. The water symbolizes the fluidity of life, and time is exemplified by the wind. Each element contains and yin/yang component, such as salt water to fresh water, and night to day. Time, however, lacks this component. Time can only move forward. The wind can only move in one direction. As the Hawaiians fight to restore their culture and rights, they are attempting the great feat of stopping the wind.

This film documents that process, and explores through a historical implication and into a context of modernity, whether …

Endocannabinoid Signalling: Has It Got Rhythm?, Linda K. Vaughn, Gerene Denning, Kara L. Stuhr, Harriet De Wit, Matthew N. Hill, Cecilia J. Hillard

Biomedical Sciences Faculty Research and Publications

Endogenous cannabinoid signalling is widespread throughout the body, and considerable evidence supports its modulatory role in many fundamental physiological processes. The daily and seasonal cycles of the relationship of the earth and sun profoundly affect the terrestrial environment. Terrestrial species have adapted to these cycles in many ways, most well studied are circadian rhythms and hibernation. The purpose of this review was to examine literature support for three hypotheses: (i) endocannabinoid signalling exhibits brain region-specific circadian rhythms; (ii) endocannabinoid signalling modulates the rhythm of circadian processes in mammals; and (iii) changes in endocannabinoid signalling contribute to the state of hibernation. …

A Direct Role For Secretory Phospholipase A2 And Lyso-Phosphatidylcholine In The Mediation Of Lipopolysaccharide-Induced Gastric Injury, Elizabeth J Dial, Duy M Tran, Jimmy J Romero, Mayssa Zayat, Lenard M Lichtenberger Jun 2010

A Direct Role For Secretory Phospholipase A2 And Lyso-Phosphatidylcholine In The Mediation Of Lipopolysaccharide-Induced Gastric Injury, Elizabeth J Dial, Duy M Tran, Jimmy J Romero, Mayssa Zayat, Lenard M Lichtenberger

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Endotoxemia from sepsis can injure the gastrointestinal tract through mechanisms that have not been fully elucidated. We have shown that LPS induces an increase in gastric permeability in parallel with the luminal appearance of secretory phospholipase A2 (sPLA2) and its product, lysophosphatidylcholine (lyso-PC). We proposed that sPLA2 acted on the gastric hydrophobic barrier, composed primarily of phosphatidylcholine (PC), to degrade it and produce lyso-PC, an agent that is damaging to the mucosa. In the present study, we have tested whether lyso-PC and/or sPLA2 have direct damaging effects on the hydrophobic barriers of synthetic and mucosal surfaces. Rats were administered LPS …

Cellular Dynamic Simulator: An Event Driven Molecular Simulation Environment For Cellular Physiology, Michael J Byrne, M Neal Waxham, Yoshihisa Kubota Jun 2010

Cellular Dynamic Simulator: An Event Driven Molecular Simulation Environment For Cellular Physiology, Michael J Byrne, M Neal Waxham, Yoshihisa Kubota

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

In this paper, we present the Cellular Dynamic Simulator (CDS) for simulating diffusion and chemical reactions within crowded molecular environments. CDS is based on a novel event driven algorithm specifically designed for precise calculation of the timing of collisions, reactions and other events for each individual molecule in the environment. Generic mesh based compartments allow the creation / importation of very simple or detailed cellular structures that exist in a 3D environment. Multiple levels of compartments and static obstacles can be used to create a dense environment to mimic cellular boundaries and the intracellular space. The CDS algorithm takes into …

Effects Of Nitrogen And Potassium Fertilizer On Willamette Spider Mite (Eotetranychus Willamettei) (Acari: Tetranychidae), Whitney Ann Geddes Jun 2010

Effects Of Nitrogen And Potassium Fertilizer On Willamette Spider Mite (Eotetranychus Willamettei) (Acari: Tetranychidae), Whitney Ann Geddes

Master's Theses

The spider mite family (Tetranychidae) is a well known pest group in agriculture. Within this family, Willamette spider mite (Eotetranychus willamettei) causes physical harm and potential damage to grapevines (Vitis vinifera) along the central and north coast of California as well as Washington and Oregon. Willamette spider mite prefers cooler climates and feeds by puncturing the plant leaf tissue; therefore removing plant nutrients in the early stages of plant growth. Amending soils with fertilizer is a common cultural practice used in commercial vineyards, but no study has documented the interaction between the effects fertilizer concentrations have on Willamette spider mite. …

Growth Hormone Alters Components Related To Differentiation, Metabolism And Milk Synthesis And Secretion In Mac-T Cells, Tasha Lynn Johnson Jun 2010

Growth Hormone Alters Components Related To Differentiation, Metabolism And Milk Synthesis And Secretion In Mac-T Cells, Tasha Lynn Johnson

Master's Theses

The mammary alveolar cell-T (MAC-T) cell line is able to uniformly differentiate and secrete casein proteins in response to dexamethasone, insulin and prolactin and is extensively used to study bovine mammary epithelial cell function. Growth hormone (GH) has been shown to increase milk protein synthesis both in vivo and in mammary cell models, and induce cytoskeletal rearrangement in 3T3 fibroblast cell line and a Chinese hamster ovary (CHO) cell line. Few studies have focused on identifying the mechanisms involved in differentiated MAC-T cells’ response to GH. We tested the hypothesis that MAC-T cells would respond directly to GH and that …

Mistakes In Identity: Sexual Orientation And Credibility In The Asylum Process, Michael Carl Budd Jun 2010

Mistakes In Identity: Sexual Orientation And Credibility In The Asylum Process, Michael Carl Budd

Archived Theses and Dissertations

This thesis examines the prejudice that exists on the part of decision-makers responsible for determining refugee status and adjudicating asylum claims in jurisdictions that accept claims based on sexual orientation. An analysis of case law from both common law and civil law jurisdictions uncovers the negative impact of judicial stereotypes about sexuality on refugees and asylum-seekers. It follows the increasing importance placed on proving the genuineness of the claimants' professed sexual identity that has coincided with an increased emphasis on credibility, a trend that has heightened the impact of decision-makers' biases regarding sexuality. In addition to analyzing case law, the …

Evolutionary Conservation Of Residues In Vertebrate Dna Polymerase N Conferring Low Fidelity And Bypass Activity, Kei-Ichi Takata, Mercedes E Arana, Mineaki Seki, Thomas A Kunkel, Richard D Wood Jun 2010

Evolutionary Conservation Of Residues In Vertebrate Dna Polymerase N Conferring Low Fidelity And Bypass Activity, Kei-Ichi Takata, Mercedes E Arana, Mineaki Seki, Thomas A Kunkel, Richard D Wood

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

POLN is a nuclear A-family DNA polymerase encoded in vertebrate genomes. POLN has unusual fidelity and DNA lesion bypass properties, including strong strand displacement activity, low fidelity favoring incorporation of T for template G and accurate translesion synthesis past a 5S-thymine glycol (5S-Tg). We searched for conserved features of the polymerase domain that distinguish it from prokaryotic pol I-type DNA polymerases. A Lys residue (679 in human POLN) of particular interest was identified in the conserved 'O-helix' of motif 4 in the fingers sub-domain. The corresponding residue is one of the most important for controlling fidelity of prokaryotic pol I …

Cell-Mediated Elastic Matrix Regeneration Toward Regression Of Abdominal Aortic Aneurysms, Carmen Gacchina Jun 2010

Cell-Mediated Elastic Matrix Regeneration Toward Regression Of Abdominal Aortic Aneurysms, Carmen Gacchina

All Dissertations

Abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAAs) are typically fusiform (symmetric) dilations of the aortic wall most commonly arising below the renal arteries. The progression is typically associated with an activated smooth muscle cell (SMC) phenotype, diminished density of mature medial elastic fibers, and an elevated presence of matrix-degrading enzymes (e.g., matrix-metalloproteases; MMPs), which may ultimately lead to vessel rupture. Currently, no surgical or non-surgical methods are available to regress AAAs via regeneration of new elastin matrices to regain normal vessel contour, particularly due to the inherently poor elastin synthesis by adult vascular cells and absence of methods to stimulate the same. Previously, …
