An Anatomical Investigation Of Higher Visual Structures In The Pigeon (Columba Livia), Tadd B. Patton Jun 2010

An Anatomical Investigation Of Higher Visual Structures In The Pigeon (Columba Livia), Tadd B. Patton

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Early visual processing in the avian brain has been studied extensively, the retina and midbrain in particular. However, a clear understanding of the higher visual centers in the forebrain (the telencephalon and thalamus) remains poor. Two structures located within the avian visual telencephalon, the entopallium (E) and the lateral portion of the intermediate nidopallium (NIL), merit extensive investigation based on their critical role in visual processing. The goal of the current study was to further clarify the anatomical characteristics of E and NIL. Visual information that reaches these telencephalic structures is mostly from the contralateral retina. Thus, blocking visual input …

Calcium-transporting ATPases (Ca2+ pumps) are major players in maintaining calcium homeostasis in the cell and have been detected in all cellular organisms. Here, we report the identification of two putative Ca2+ pumps, M535L and C785L, encoded by chlorella viruses MT325 and AR158, respectively, and the functional characterization of M535L. Phylogenetic and sequence analyses place the viral proteins in group IIB of P-type ATPases even though they lack a typical feature of this class, a calmodulin-binding domain. A Ca2+ pump gene is present in 45 of 47 viruses tested and is transcribed during virus infection. Complementation analysis of …

James Van Etten Publications

Nucleocytoplasmic large DNA viruses (NCLDVs) are characterized by large genomes that often encode proteins not commonly found in viruses. Two species in this group are Acanthocystis turfacea chlorella virus 1 (ATCV-1) (family Phycodnaviridae, genus Chlorovirus) and Acanthamoeba polyphaga mimivirus (family Mimiviridae), commonly known as mimivirus. ATCV-1 and other chlorovirus members encode enzymes involved in the synthesis and glycosylation of their structural proteins. In this study, we identified and characterized three enzymes responsible for the synthesis of the sugar L-rhamnose: two UDP-D-glucose 4,6-dehydratases (UGDs) encoded by ATCV-1 and mimivirus and a bifunctional UDP-4-keto-6-deoxy-D-glucose epimerase/reductase (UGER) from mimivirus. Phylogenetic …

Analysis Of Anthropogenic Effects On Topsoil Throughout The California Polytechnic State University Campus In San Luis Obispo, Brooke L. Hamilton

Earth and Soil Sciences

Soils reflect the health of a landscape, and in many cases carry the burden of anthropogenic activity, continually changing in characteristics such as pH, soil texture, soil structure, carbon:nitrogen ratios (C:N), and chemical composition. In a study sampling six different soils on the California Polytechnic State University campus in San Luis Obispo, these five soil characteristics were tested for and the results were determined. Soil samples consist of the top 5-10 cm of soil profiles, with sample sites varying according to degree of human contact; the locations the samples were taken from are as follows: (1) Walters Creek Ranch pasture, …

The Influence Of Vegetation And Landscape Position On Soil Temperature Change In A Sagebrush-Steppe Eastern Sierra Environment: Implications On Soil Taxonomy, Nathan Michael Lurie Jun 2010

The Influence Of Vegetation And Landscape Position On Soil Temperature Change In A Sagebrush-Steppe Eastern Sierra Environment: Implications On Soil Taxonomy, Nathan Michael Lurie

Earth and Soil Sciences

Soil temperature is a parameter that has been studied for a considerable time and from many different perspectives. However, relatively few studies have been conducted for taxonomic purposes and fewer still have focused on how changes in soil temperature related to global climate change may affect soil taxonomy. Soil temperature regimes are used to subdivide soils with similar properties that exist in dissimilar climate zones requiring different management practices depending on intended use. Seven sites with variable surficial features were used for this study within a cohesive sagebrush-steppe Eastern Sierra glacial moraine landform. Soil temperature was measured once a month …

A Comparison Of Costs And Returns For Organic And Conventional Cabernet Sauvignon Grape Production In San Luis Obispo County, Amanda N. Johansen

Agribusiness

This study examined the differences in costs and profitability for established conventional and organic Cabernet Sauvignon vineyards in the Edna Valley region of San Luis Obispo County, California. The study used a partial budgeting approach to compare cost and profitability for established vineyards for 2009, and thus ignored transition costs. Data were obtained from UC Davis cost studies for organic and conventional grape production in other regions of California in previous years. Adjustments made to these costs to account for changes in input use, input costs and grape prices in San Luis Obispo County during the 2009 growing season.

The World’S Most Perfectly Developed Man: Charles Atlas, Physical Culture, And The Inscription Of American Masculinity, Jacqueline Reich Jun 2010

The World’S Most Perfectly Developed Man: Charles Atlas, Physical Culture, And The Inscription Of American Masculinity, Jacqueline Reich

CMS Faculty Publications

The major wave of Italian immigration between the nineteenth and twentieth centuries coincided with the growth of the physical culture movement in the United States. A principal participant in both phenomena was the Italian male, with a particularly fascinating case being that of the bodybuilder and fitness guru Charles Atlas. Born Angelo Siciliano in Calabria, Italy, Atlas provides an interesting window into how the Southern immigrant became American and how that Americanization was written on the muscled, male body. This article examines how Siciliano/Atlas transformed himself into the world’s most perfect white man at a time when Italians’ whiteness was …

Girls Coming Of Age: Possibilites And Potentials Within Young Adult Literature, Abbey J. Fox Jun 2010

Girls Coming Of Age: Possibilites And Potentials Within Young Adult Literature, Abbey J. Fox

College of Liberal Arts & Social Sciences Theses and Dissertations

"Although the primary purpose of the adolescent novel may appear to be a depiction of growth, growth in this genre is inevitably represented as being linked to what the adolescent has learned about power. Without experiences gradations between power and powerlessness, the adolescent cannot grow" (Seelinger-Trites, x). The quote above asserts that an analysis of power must be considered when analyzing young adult literature. Rebecca Seelinger-Trites further explains that adolescents (in society and in literature) are both powerful and disempowered. Coming of age presents an opportunity to grow toward adulthood and gain certain power and privileges, while simultaneously losing certain …

Predictive Inference Generation In The Cerebral Hemispheres: An Investigation Of Time Course And Reader Goals, Laura S. Motyka Joss Jun 2010

Predictive Inference Generation In The Cerebral Hemispheres: An Investigation Of Time Course And Reader Goals, Laura S. Motyka Joss

College of Liberal Arts & Social Sciences Theses and Dissertations

During reading, individuals activate information that is not explicitly stated to make connections (i.e., inferences) about what is occurring in a text. Readers often make connections between events in a text and their background knowledge by generating expectations about what will occur next (i.e., generating a predictive inference). Although predictive inferences have been shown to improve text comprehension (Magliano et al.,1994), it is currently unclear whether readers routinely generate predictive inferences during reading. Multiple factors have been shown to influence predictive inference generation (e.g., Murray&Burke, 2003); Linderholm, 2002). For example, characteristics of the text (such as the level of textual …

Causality Assessment In Drug-Induced Liver Injury Using A Structured Expert Opinion Process: Comparison To The Roussel-Uclaf Causality Assessment Method, James W. Freston Jun 2010

Causality Assessment In Drug-Induced Liver Injury Using A Structured Expert Opinion Process: Comparison To The Roussel-Uclaf Causality Assessment Method, James W. Freston

Articles - Patient Care

Drug-induced liver injury (DILI) is largely a diagnosis of exclusion and is therefore challenging. The US Drug-Induced Liver Injury Network (DILIN) prospective study used two methods to assess DILI causality: a structured expert opinion process and the Roussel-Uclaf Causality Assessment Method (RUCAM). Causality assessment focused on detailed clinical and laboratory data from patients with suspected DILI. The adjudication process used standardized numerical and descriptive definitions and scored cases as definite, highly likely, probable, possible, or unlikely. Results of the structured expert opinion procedure were compared with those derived by the RUCAM approach. Among 250 patients with suspected DILI, the expert …

Characterization Of Stem And Progenitor Cells In The Dental Pulp Of Erupted And Unerupted Murine Molars, Anamaria Balic, Hector L. Aguila, Melissa J. Caimano, Victor P. Francone, Mina Mina Jun 2010

Characterization Of Stem And Progenitor Cells In The Dental Pulp Of Erupted And Unerupted Murine Molars, Anamaria Balic, Hector L. Aguila, Melissa J. Caimano, Victor P. Francone, Mina Mina

UCHC Articles - Research

In the past few years there have been significant advances in the identification of putative stem cells also referred to as “mesenchymal stem cells” (MSC) in dental tissues including the dental pulp. It is thought that MSC in dental pulp share certain similarities with MSC isolated from other tissues. However, cells in dental pulp are still poorly characterized. This study focused on the characterization of progenitor and stem cells in dental pulps of erupted and unerupted mice molars. Our study showed that dental pulps from unerupted molars contain a significant number of cells expressing CD90+/CD45-, CD117+/CD45-, Sca-1+/CD45- and little if …

Mitochondria-Centric Activation Induced Cell Death Of Cytolytic T Lymphocytes And Its Implications For Cancer Immunotherapy, Arvind Chhabra Jun 2010

Mitochondria-Centric Activation Induced Cell Death Of Cytolytic T Lymphocytes And Its Implications For Cancer Immunotherapy, Arvind Chhabra

UCHC Articles - Research

Premature death of the adoptively transferred cytolytic T lymphocytes (CTL) by means of activation induced cell death (AICD) represents one of the major constraints in devising an effective anti-cancer immune intervention strategy. Understanding the mechanism of AICD is, therefore, critical for developing methods to interfere with this death process. Although the existing paradigm on AICD centers around the initiation of the cascade of events originating from the engagement of death receptors leading to the activation of effector caspases and eventually resulting in cell death, recent findings have questioned the universal role of caspases as the cell death executioners. We here …

A Prospective Cohort Study Investigating Factors Associated With Depression During Medical Internship, Grace Chan, Henry R. Kranzler Jun 2010

A Prospective Cohort Study Investigating Factors Associated With Depression During Medical Internship, Grace Chan, Henry R. Kranzler

UCHC Articles - Research

Context

Although the prevalence of depression among medical interns substantially exceeds that of the general population, the specific factors responsible are not well understood. Recent reports of a moderating effect of a genetic polymorphism (5-HTTLPR) in the serotonin transporter protein gene on the likelihood that life stress will precipitate depression may help to understand the development of mood symptoms in medical interns.

Objective

To identify psychological, demographic and residency program factors that associate with depression among interns and use medical internship as a model to study the moderating effects of this polymorphism using a prospective, within-subject design that addresses the …
