Recognizing And Managing Common Crop Disease In South Dakota, Martin A. Draper, Darrel Deneke Jun 2010

Recognizing And Managing Common Crop Disease In South Dakota, Martin A. Draper, Darrel Deneke

SDSU Extension Extra Archives

Diseases of plants may be expressed differently under varying environmental conditions or in various host species. Disease is the outward expression of an infection, yet in some cases there may be no outward evidence of disease. Outward expression may be some deviation from normal growth, change in appearance, or alteration of the quality or value of the crop. Plant diseases may be caused by biotic agents, infectious microorganisms, or abiotic causes such as chemical deposition, nutrient imbalances, or environmental factors. This publication concentrates on biotic or infectious diseases and provides information on common abiotic problems. Infectious plant diseases may be …

Urinary Levoglucosan As A Biomarker For Wood Smoke: Results Of Human Exposure Studies, Megan Ann Bergauff, Tony Ward, Curtis W. Noonan, Christopher T. Migliaccio, Christopher D. Simpson, Ashley R. Evanoski, Christopher P. Palmer

Public and Community Health Sciences Faculty Publications

Urinary levoglucosan was investigated as a potential biomarker for wood smoke exposure in two different controlled experimental settings. Nine subjects were exposed to smoke from a campfire in a controlled setting and four were exposed to smoke from an older model wood stove. All subjects were asked to provide urine samples before and after exposure, and to wear personal PM2.5 monitors during the exposure. Urinary levoglucosan measurements from both studies showed no consistent response to the smoke exposure. A third experiment was conducted to assess the contribution of dietary factors to urinary levoglucosan levels. Nine subjects were asked to …

Psychological Adjustment: Are Adopted Adolescents At Greater Risk For Negative Outcomes?, Caroline Tozzi Reppold, Aida Hutz, Claudio Simon Hutz

Counselor Education Faculty Publications and Presentations

During the last decades several authors have indicated that being an adopted child resulted in a higher risk of psychological maladjustment. The objective of this research was to investigate the changes in perception of parental styles in adopted and no-adopted adolescents Brazilians. The sample comprised 524 adolescents (68 were adopted and 456 were raised by their biological parents). The instruments used were a demographic questionnaire and the Responsiveness Scales and Parental Demands. The findings indicated that adoptive parents are significantly more indulgent than biological parents. In comparison, the adolescents described their biological parents as more negligent. The findings corroborated the …

Side-By-Side Management Of Hedge Funds And Mutual Funds, Tom Nohel, Z. Jay Wang, Lu Zheng Jun 2010

Side-By-Side Management Of Hedge Funds And Mutual Funds, Tom Nohel, Z. Jay Wang, Lu Zheng

Research Collection BNP Paribas Hedge Fund Centre

We examine situations where the same fund manager simultaneously manages mutual funds and hedge funds. We refer to this as side-by-side management. We document 344 such cases involving 693 mutual funds and 538 hedge funds. Proponents of this practice argue that it is essential to hire and retain star performers. Detractors argue that the temptation for abuse is high and the practice should be banned. Our analysis based on various performance metrics shows that side-by-side mutual fund managers significantly outperform peer funds, consistent with this privilege being granted primarily to star performers. Interestingly, side-by-side hedge fund managers are at best …

Goal Achievement Through Self-Directed Learning And Self-Regulation In Young Adulthood, Henry Murray

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

The purposes of this research project were to: (a) explore the processes of self-directed learning and self-regulation throughout young adulthood, and (b) determine how young adults apply the concepts and principles of self-directed learning and self-regulation in goal setting and goal achievement. The researcher reviewed six major adult learning concepts and constructs, including self-directed learning and self-directedness, self-regulation and self-regulated learning, experiential learning, dialogue learning, critical reflection, and transformational learning, in order to better understand the autonomous and self-directed learning processes that adults engage in on a daily basis. A PowerPoint presentation with a practical goal setting and goal achievement …

A Biological Global Positioning System: Considerations For Tracking Stem Cell Behaviors In The Whole Body., Shengwen Calvin Li, Lisa May Ling Tachiki, Jane Luo, Brent A Dethlefs, Zhongping Chen, William G Loudon

Department of Stem Cell Biology and Regenerative Medicine Faculty Papers & Presentations

Many recent research studies have proposed stem cell therapy as a treatment for cancer, spinal cord injuries, brain damage, cardiovascular disease, and other conditions. Some of these experimental therapies have been tested in small animals and, in rare cases, in humans. Medical researchers anticipate extensive clinical applications of stem cell therapy in the future. The lack of basic knowledge concerning basic stem cell biology-survival, migration, differentiation, integration in a real time manner when transplanted into damaged CNS remains an absolute bottleneck for attempt to design stem cell therapies for CNS diseases. A major challenge to the development of clinical applied …

Inductions, Red Herrings, And The Best Explanation For The Mixed Record Of Science, P.D. Magnus Jun 2010

Inductions, Red Herrings, And The Best Explanation For The Mixed Record Of Science, P.D. Magnus

Philosophy Faculty Scholarship

Kyle Stanford has recently claimed to offer a new challenge to scientific realism. Taking his inspiration from the familiar Pessimistic Induction (PI), Stanford proposes a New Induction (NI). Contra Anjan Chakravartty’s suggestion that the NI is a ‘red herring’, I argue that it reveals something deep and important about science. The Problem of Unconceived Alternatives, which lies at the heart of the NI, yields a richer anti-realism than the PI. It explains why science falls short when it falls short, and so it might figure in the most coherent account of scientific practice. However, this best account will be antirealist …

Water Quality Outreach And Education Strategies For Northwest Arkansas And Regional Watersheds, Katie Teague, John Pennington Jun 2010

Water Quality Outreach And Education Strategies For Northwest Arkansas And Regional Watersheds, Katie Teague, John Pennington

Arkansas Water Resources Center Technical Reports

Stakeholders impact water quality and have a responsibility to protect, maintain, and improve water quality throughout northwest Arkansas and watersheds everywhere. But unless the roles of responsibility and stewardship among all stakeholders is communicated clearly and repetitively, there will be little progress made towards maintaining and improving water quality, while lawsuits, blame, and inaction will persist. Thus, the overall goal of water quality education and outreach is to improve the ability of stakeholders to take care of their watershed by teaching them what actions are or are not beneficial for water quality protection, maintenance, or improvements. Specific outreach and education …

Water Quality And Watershed Conditions In The Upper Illinois River Watershed, Brian Haggard, Andrew Sharpley, Leslie Massey Jun 2010

Water Quality And Watershed Conditions In The Upper Illinois River Watershed, Brian Haggard, Andrew Sharpley, Leslie Massey

Arkansas Water Resources Center Technical Reports

The Illinois River and its tributaries have many uses that have been designated by the Arkansas Department of Environmental Quality including fisheries, aquatic life, primary contact waters, secondary contact waters, drinking water supply, and agricultural and industrial water supply, and water quality affects whether these uses can be supported. Since water quality can be quite complex, many types of measurements can be used as water quality indicators; some common water quality measurements include pH, dissolved oxygen concentration, and conductivity. More complicated measurements include determining nutrients, sediment and bacteria in the water, as well as assessing the aquatic life—aquatic insects, fish, …

Handbook Of Best Management Practices For The Upper Illinois River Watershed And Other Regional Watersheds, B.E. Haggard, Andrew Sharpley, Leslie Massey

Arkansas Water Resources Center Technical Reports

Management actions are strategies carried out by stakeholders that are designed to implement water quality protection and restoration activities with a watershed. This publication presents a range of beneficial management actions from simple to complex that address the pollutant potential that is common across the watershed landscape of northwest Arkansas. Some management actions can be undertaken by any watershed stakeholder at any time, while others need to be carefully planned or lobbied to local and state government. The following chapters address potential management actions that can be taken by individuals or groups at households, businesses, institutions, municipalities, industrial facilities, farms, …

Shoreland And Riparian Buffer Regulations For The Town Of Raymond Prep Local Grants Program 2008 Final Project Report, Town Of Raymond, New Hampshire, Southern New Hampshire Planning Commission

PREP Reports & Publications

In September of 2007, SNHPC applied to PREP’s Local Grant Program seeking $5,000 to help develop local shoreland protection ordinances consistent with the state’s Comprehensive Shoreland Protection Act regulations. This project was modeled on similar PREP-supported projects completed in the towns of Candia and Deerfield. The Raymond Conservation Commission served as the primary municipal board involved with this project. PREP funded the project and ensured that it was coordinated with other natural resource planning efforts underway with the town via the Natural Resources Outreach Coalition.

O Virgin Of Virgins, Our Mother: A Feminist Reconstruction Of Mary’S Perpetual Virginity As A Model For Christian Discipleship, Julia A. Feder Jun 2010

O Virgin Of Virgins, Our Mother: A Feminist Reconstruction Of Mary’S Perpetual Virginity As A Model For Christian Discipleship, Julia A. Feder

Journal of Interdisciplinary Feminist Thought

In this paper I aim to recover the revolutionary force of Mary’s perpetual virginity as a model for Christian discipleship in two stages: first, I search the writings of Ambrose of Milan and Augustine of Hippo as well as the medieval hagiographic tradition of virgin martyr tales for resources which recognize the possible concurrence of virginity and sexual activity, given that the sexual activity in question lacks full consent; second, I push the tradition beyond itself to reach toward a new understanding of virginity which can admit the possible coincidence of virginity and fully consensual sexual activity

Research in the corrosion of orthopaedic implants is a growing research field where implants have been known to show adverse effects in patients who have encountered the unfortunate dissolution of their implants due to corrosion. Once corrosion begins within the body, many adverse biological reactions can occur such as late on-set infections resulting in severe health complications. The focus of this research is specifically related to the problem of late on-set infections caused by localized corrosion of orthopaedic implants. In medical …
