Antispasmodic, Bronchodilator And Blood Pressure Lowering Properties Of Hypericum Oblongifolium - Possible Mechanism Of Action, Arif-Ullah Khan, Munasib Khan, Fazal Subhan, Anwar Gilani

Department of Biological & Biomedical Sciences

The crude extract of Hypericum oblongifolium (Ho.Cr), which tested positive for flavonoids, saponins and tannins caused concentration-dependent (0.1-1.0 mg/mL) relaxation of spontaneous and high K(+) (80 mM)-induced contractions in isolated rabbit jejunum preparations, suggesting a Ca(++) antagonistic effect, which was confirmed when pretreatment of the tissue with Ho.Cr produced a rightward shift in the Ca(++) concentration-response curves, like that caused by verapamil. Ho.Cr relaxed carbachol (1 mu M) and high K(+)-induced contractions in guinea pig tracheal preparations. It caused a dose-dependent (3-100 mg/kg) fall in arterial blood pressure of rats under anesthesia. In isolated guinea pig atria, Ho.Cr caused inhibition …

Autoregulation Of Sinorhizobium Meliloti Exor Gene Expression, Hai-Yang Lu, Hai-Ping Cheng Jul 2010

Autoregulation Of Sinorhizobium Meliloti Exor Gene Expression, Hai-Yang Lu, Hai-Ping Cheng

Publications and Research

The successful nitrogen-fixing symbiosis between the Gram-negative soil bacterium Sinorhizobium meliloti and its leguminous plant host alfalfa (Medicago sativa) requires the bacterial exopolysaccharide succinoglycan. Succinoglycan and flagellum production, along with the ability to metabolize more than 20 different carbon sources and control the expression of a large number of S. meliloti genes, is regulated by the ExoR–ExoS/ChvI signalling pathway. The ExoR protein interacts with and suppresses the sensing activities of ExoS, the membrane-bound sensor of the ExoS/ChvI two-component regulatory system. Here we show that exoR expression is clearly upregulated in the absence of any functional ExoR protein. This upregulation was …

Breaking The Stained Glass Ceiling: Collaborative Leadership Theory As A Model For Women In Theological Higher Education, Mary E. Lowe Jul 2010

Breaking The Stained Glass Ceiling: Collaborative Leadership Theory As A Model For Women In Theological Higher Education, Mary E. Lowe

Journal of Women in Educational Leadership

One of the prevailing notions within American culture is the idea that women are prevalent in leadership positions within business, politics, and higher education. The reality, however, is that while women make up slightly more than 50% of the popUlation, we are under-represented in these institutions. There are fewer than 20 female CEOs of the Fortune 500 companies. Women make up only 35% of the 2009 Congress and as of 2006 represented fewer than 10% of chief executive officers in theological higher education. The traditional views of theological higher education have been in favor of men but the reality is …

High Performance Atomic-Layer-Deposited Laluo3/Ge-On-Insulator P-Channel Metal-Oxide-Semiconductor Field-Effect Transistor With Thermally Grown Geo2 As Interfacial Passivation Layer, J J. Gu, Y Q. Liu, M Xu, G K. Celler, R G. Gordon, P. D. Ye

Birck and NCN Publications

Enhancement-mode p-channel metal-oxide-semiconductor field-effect transistor (MOSFET) on germanium-on-insulator substrate is fabricated with atomic-layer-deposited (ALD) LaLuO3 as gate dielectric. Significant improvement in both on-state current and effective hole mobility has been observed for devices with thermal GeO2 passivation. The negative threshold voltage (V-T) shift in devices with GeO2 interfacial layer (IL) further demonstrates the effectiveness of surface passivation. Results from low temperature mobility characterization show that phonon scattering is the dominant scattering mechanism at a large inversion charge, indicating good interface quality. The combination of higher-k LaLuO3 and ultrathin GeO2 IL is a promising solution to the tradeoff between the aggressive …

Nonlinear Observers For Human-In-The-Loop Control Systems, Samuel Kitchen Mckinley

Master's Theses - Daytona Beach

The development of models for a human-in-the-loop with hardware is an area of ongoing research. The ability to simulate a human-in-the-loop with hardware provides a platform for better understanding the dynamics of human and machine cognition. A human-in-the-loop model provides information that can be used to design more efficient human interfaces and smarter autonomous assistant controllers. This can make a complex task such as flying an aircraft safer and more accessible. This thesis explores different possibilities for human operator models to be modeled in the loop with a vehicle. A human is modeled as a linear state feedback controller in …

U.S.-China Maritime Confidence Building Paradigms, Precedents, And Prospects, David Griffiths

CMSI Red Books

As two great powers that will influence much of the immediate future of our small and vulnerable planet, China and the United States are in a marriage of sorts—united for the purpose of living together, in the words of the Oxford English Dictionary. Like it or not, the two societies depend on each other. Environmental degradation, social unrest, economic problems, or pandemic outbreak in one must inevitably affect the other. Both must be active contributors to a peaceful, prosperous, sustainable, global community. Both governments emphasize their commitment to a positive and constructive mutual engagement. At sea, however, that engagement is …

River Sediment Sampling Methods: Causeway Building And Removal, Dillon Dittmer

Department of Environmental Studies: Undergraduate Student Theses

Abstract The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) suspect that causeways have a negative impact on river ecology both when installed and when removed. The Nebraska Department of Roads routinely uses causeways as a tool in the construction and repair of bridges. Although research has not been conducted on the impact of causeway building and removal data has been collected about the impact of dams, causeways, etc. on estuaries. This data is considered subjective and authors often cite sampling methods as a source of error. Currently there are no widely used handheld sampling methods that …

Theology And Ecology: Religious Belief And Environmental Stewardship, Gary C. Bryner

BYU Studies

This article explores the potential role religious belief might play in U.S. environmental policy making. Careful environmental stewardship holds a prominent place in Mormon theology as it does among other faiths. It is helpful to know how religious groups are engaged in environmental policy making, the strengths and limitations of these efforts, and the prospects for religious-based contributions to environmental protection policies. The experience of other believers illuminates some of the choices members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints face when engaging in public debates over environmental policy.

Evidence For A Change In The Rate Of Aging Of Osteological Indicators In American Documented Skeletal Samples, Wendy Elizabeth Potter Jul 2010

Evidence For A Change In The Rate Of Aging Of Osteological Indicators In American Documented Skeletal Samples, Wendy Elizabeth Potter

Anthropology ETDs

The question of uniformity in skeletal age changes across populations is fundamental to all comparative work in skeletal biology. Whether an aging standard will work on target groups that differ in time, space, and background from the reference sample is essential for reliable, accurate age estimation. This research addressed whether a difference in skeletal senescence exists between older American documented collections and more recent ones. The pubic symphysis, auricular surface, sternal rib end, and suture obliteration were scored for a sample of American Blacks and Whites drawn from the Terry, Hamann-Todd, Bass Documented, Maxwell Museum, and Maricopa County Forensic Science …

Dopaminergic Neurons Derived From Human Induced Pluripotent Stem Cells Survive And Integrate Into 6-Ohda-Lesioned Rats., Jingli Cai, Ming Yang, Elizabeth Poremsky, Sarah Kidd, Jay S Schneider, Lorraine Iacovitti

Farber Institute for Neuroscience Faculty Papers

Cell replacement therapy could be an important treatment strategy for Parkinson's disease (PD), which is caused by the degeneration of dopamine neurons in the midbrain (mDA). The success of this approach greatly relies on the discovery of an abundant source of cells capable of mDAergic function in the brain. With the paucity of available human fetal tissue, efforts have increasingly focused on renewable stem cells. Human induced pluripotent stem (hiPS) cells offer great promise in this regard. If hiPS cells can be differentiated into authentic mDA neuron, hiPS could provide a potential autologous source of transplant tissue when generated from …

Analyzing The Relationship Between Self-Confidence In Mathematics And Students' Characteristics Using Multinomial Logistic Regression, N.A. Ismail, H. Awang

Research Publications (2006 to 2010)

This study investigates the relationship between self-confidence and achievement among Malaysian students using multinomial logistic regression and the data are from TIMSS 2007. Although, in general, Malaysian students had low self-confidence in learning mathematics, their performance in mathematics at the international level is higher as compared to some countries with high level of self-confidence. This study also found that, besides mathematics achievement, there are four other factors that separate the level of self-confidence among Malaysian students. These factors are gender of students, students' aspiration, use of computer for school work, having teachers who want students to do their best.

Implementation Of Physiologic Pressure Conditions In A Blood Vessel Mimic Bioreactor System, Kevin Mark Okarski

Master's Theses

ABSTRACT

Implementation of Physiologic Pressure Conditions in a Blood Vessel Mimic Bioreactor System

Kevin Mark Okarski

Tissue engineering has traditionally been pursued as a therapeutic science intended for restoring or replacing diseased or damaged biologic tissues or organs. Cal Poly’s Blood Vessel Mimic Laboratory is developing a novel application of tissue engineering as a tool for the preclinical evaluation of intravascular devices. The blood vessel mimic (BVM) system has been previously used to assess the tissue response to deployed stents, but under non-physiologic conditions. Since then, efforts have been made to improve the vessel and bioreactor’s ability to emulate in …

Numerical Modeling Of The Salinity Distribution And Environmental Flows Assessment In The Yellow River Estuary, China, T. Sun, Z. F. Yang Jul 2010

Numerical Modeling Of The Salinity Distribution And Environmental Flows Assessment In The Yellow River Estuary, China, T. Sun, Z. F. Yang

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

Predication of environmental flows is a critical issue in water resourcesmanagement integrated with ecological considerations. It is also a complex issue due to therelationship between ecological and hydrological processes with different temporal andspatial scales in estuarine ecosystems. The salinity gradient is a basic characteristic for anestuary ecosystem, which is largely affected by the alteration of freshwater inflows becauseof human activities. In this paper, a numerical model was developed for simulating thesalinity distribution under the action of river discharge and tide current in the Yellow RiverEstuary. Environmental flow requirements were determined for critical periods in theYellow River Estuary after identifying the …

Exploring Forest Management Practices Using An Agent-Based Model Of Forest Insect Infestations, Liliana Pérez, Suzana Dragicevic

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

The forests of British Columbia, Canada have undergone an unprecedented Mountain Pine Beetle, Dendroctonus ponderosae Hopkins, (MPB) infestation that has resulted in extensive mortality of lodgepole pine, Pinus contorta. The objective of this study is to apply the agent-based model (ABM) to simulate the MPB attack behaviour in order to evaluate how different harvesting policies influence spatial characteristics of the forest and spatial propagation of the MPB infestation over time. The first scenario is the no management action with the natural disturbance process leading the changes of the forest ecosystem. The other two scenarios implement sanitation and salvage harvesting methods. …

Multi-Disciplinary Development Of An Early Warning And Automated Response System (Ewars) For Epidemic Prevention, Ajit N. Babu, Engelbert Niehaus Jul 2010

Multi-Disciplinary Development Of An Early Warning And Automated Response System (Ewars) For Epidemic Prevention, Ajit N. Babu, Engelbert Niehaus

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

It is becoming increasingly clear that changes in the environment can promote growth ofdisease vectors like mosquitoes and rodents as well as rise in water-borne illnesses likecholera and other enteric diseases. Our paper is based on the concept that a multidisciplinaryinformatics scaffold can serve as an Early Warning and Automated Response System(EWARS) for a variety of communicable diseases. It will utilize multiple informationresources including Remote Sensing (RS), Global Positioning Systems (GPS) andGeographic Information Systems (GIS) for exposure assessment (John et al 2004). Earlywarning systems are not new (Witt et al 2009). However, what is novel in the proposal isthe integration …

An Interdisciplinary Framework For The Development And Analysis Of Crop Models, Sebastien Roux, Myriam Adam, Wery Jacques Jul 2010

An Interdisciplinary Framework For The Development And Analysis Of Crop Models, Sebastien Roux, Myriam Adam, Wery Jacques

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

Development and use of crop models has become an interdisciplinary field with the increase on one hand of the biophysical knowledge and the development of numerous dedicated software platforms on the other hand. This trend calls for formalizing the integration of the disciplinary contributions of scientists having different expertises needed in crop modelling : agronomists, mathematicians, software scientists. We propose an interdisciplinary framework to : (1) describe the model with different expert domain knowledge, (2) identify bridges to help scientists of different domains to work together on the same model, (3) give a methodological basis (engine) for crop model studies. …

A Modelling Study Involving Scientists And Local Stakeholders., Philippe Cugier, Caroline Struski, Karine Grangere, Michel Blanchard, Katia Frangoudès, Thierry Robin, José Pérez, Rémi Mongruel, Joseph Mazurié, Patrick Le Mao, Guy Fontenelle

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

The macro-benthic communities of Mont-Saint-Michel Bay, located in the Norman-Breton Gulf (English Channel) along the French coast, are mainly dominated by filter-feeders which include cultivated species (oysters and mussels). The decline in shellfish farms production and the significant spreading of the invasive slipper-limpet Crepidula fornicata have conducted scientists and stakeholders to undertake a reflexion on the trophic balance between cultivated and wild (native or invasive non-native) filterfeeders. An ecological model of the bay was developed, coupling a 2D hydro-sedimentary model along with biological models for primary production and filter-feeder growth. The objectives of the project were first to provide indicators …
