Soil Total Organic Carbon, Δ13c Values And Their Responses To The Soil Core Transferring Experiment From High- To Low-Elevation Forest Along Natural Altitudinal Transect Of Old Temperate Volcanic Forest Soils, Zhang Xin-Yu, Meng Xian-Jing, Fan Jin-Juan, Gao Lu-Peng, Sun Xiao-Min

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

In this study, the responses of soil organic carbon and δ13C values to soil warming were conducted by relocating intact soil cores from high- to low-elevation forests for one year along a natural altitudinal transect in the northern slope of Changbai Mountain. As expected, the soil-core relocation caused significant increase in soil temperature but made no significant effect on soil moisture. The results showed that after one year incubation, soil relocation significantly decreased TOC contents, and δ13C decreased. Pearson correlation analysis demonstrates that TOC content was negatively related to soil temperature but positively related to soil moisture. After one-year simulated …

Using Statistical Bias Description For Multiobjective Calibration Of A Lake Water Quality Model, Anne Dietzel, Peter Reichert Jul 2010

Using Statistical Bias Description For Multiobjective Calibration Of A Lake Water Quality Model, Anne Dietzel, Peter Reichert

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

Models of environmental systems are simplified representations of reality. For this reason, their results are affected by systematic errors. This bias makes it difficult to get reliable uncertainty estimates of model parameters and predictions. We were faced with that difficulty when applying the lake model BELAMO to data from three Swiss lakes. This model combines the description of biogeochemical and ecological processes in lakes. Considering bias in the model output, lead to a description of system observations as the sum of the output of the deterministic model, bias and observation error. The identifiability problem between model output and bias was …

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

The US Fish and Wildlife Service has an interest in understanding how sandhill and whooping cranes (Grus canadensis and G. americana, respectively) use habitats in the landscape surrounding Horicon National Wildlife Refuge in Wisconsin, USA. The refuge and adjacent state wildlife management areas contain the largest cattail marsh in the lower 48 states, providing important habitat for sandhill and whooping cranes, especially for roosting and staging for migration. Important feeding habitats are found in adjacent agricultural fields, small wetlands, and grasslands. It is in these feeding habitats that commercial wind turbines have been erected. We are studying crane movements in …

Mr Potatohead Framework – A Software Tool For Collaborative Land-Use Change Modeling, Mike Livermore Jul 2010

Mr Potatohead Framework – A Software Tool For Collaborative Land-Use Change Modeling, Mike Livermore

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

Agent-based land-use cover/change models (ABM/LUCC), which can be used for various types of complex human-environment interactions, recently have been gaining popularity. ABM/LUCC models combine a spatial representation of the landscape with key decision-makers (e.g. farmers and institutions) and an environment for interaction. There is inherent complexity in modeling human-environment interactions which need to be assessed at multiple spatial and time scales, and often multiple models are integrated; however, current methods of developing integrated models are often cumbersome and communicating design and results can be a great challenge and would be aided by a common framework in which different models can …

Meta-Modelling The European Environmental Information Space, Werner Pillmann, Karl-Heinz Simon

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

In this paper a conceptual Meta-Model is presented with the aim to structure environmental information, relevant for the environmental part of sustainable development. It is focused on crucial environmental information flows handled in the discipline of Environmental Informatics. The introduced structure is a conceptual systems dynamics type model which describes the natural environment (air, water, soil, climate etc.), the private sector (industry, trade, transport etc.) and households. It uses the input-output presentation where causeeffect chains and information feedback paths are considered. The Meta-Model brings together substantial information about environmental indicators from different areas and organizations, the knowledge about levels of …

Quantifying Ecosystem Service Trade-Offs, Sven Lautenbach, Martin Volk, Bernd Gruber, Carsten F. Dormann Jul 2010

Quantifying Ecosystem Service Trade-Offs, Sven Lautenbach, Martin Volk, Bernd Gruber, Carsten F. Dormann

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

The ecosystem services concept evaluates ecosystem functions from a human perspective, e.g. the concept focuses on the contribution of ecosystem functions, ecosystem goods and services or human well-being. An evaluation allows the analysis of trade-offs between different ecosystem services as well as between ecosystem services and other components of human well-being. We will test three options to compare trade-offs between ecosystem services, namely map comparison, scenario analysis and trade-off analysis using optimized landscapes. While map comparison and scenario analysis are valuable tools to study ecosystem service trade-offs we emphasize the use of optimized landscapes for tradeoff analysis. Overall, analysis of …

Evaluating Climate Suitability For Agriculture In Switzerland, A. Holzkämper, P. Calanca, J. Fuhrer Jul 2010

Evaluating Climate Suitability For Agriculture In Switzerland, A. Holzkämper, P. Calanca, J. Fuhrer

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

With climate change increased water shortage and extreme weather eventsduring the cropping season may cause more frequent crop loss, yield instability, and makecultivated areas less suitable for traditional crops. In order to develop long-term agriculturalpolicies, planners need to understand the likely impacts of climate change on the climatesuitability for different cultivation types. Agroclimatic indices have great potential tocommunicate the impacts of climate change. However, each metric only represents aspecific aspect of climate that may or may not be relevant for the growth of a certain croptype. To guide planners and policy makers, different indices have to be aggregated in acomprehensible …

Estimates Of Seasonal Methane Emissions From Paddy-Rice Cropped At Pindamonhangaba Municipality, Brazil, Using Dndc Model, Maria Conceição Peres Young Pessoa, Magda Aparecida De Lima, Omar Vieira Vilella Jul 2010

Estimates Of Seasonal Methane Emissions From Paddy-Rice Cropped At Pindamonhangaba Municipality, Brazil, Using Dndc Model, Maria Conceição Peres Young Pessoa, Magda Aparecida De Lima, Omar Vieira Vilella

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

Agricultural activities have been pointed out as one of anthropogenic sources of greenhouse gas emissions, which influence on climatic changes. Information available at Intergovernmental Panel on Climatic Changes (Ipcc) indicated that methane emissions (CH4) generated during the paddy-rice culture development phases is one of these activities and must be better investigated at field conditions. Computer tools that allow following the space-time dynamic of methane emissions from paddy-rice culture, considering the management involved, should also contribute to identify alternatives in order to minimize the high emission rates. Thereby, the Denitrification-Decomposition model (DnDc) can be used to investigate alternative scenarios in order …

A Comparison Of Fuzzy, Bayesian And Weighted Average Formulations Of An In-Stream Habitat Suitability Model., C. J. Brookes, Vikas Kumar, S. N. Lane

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

Three variations of a simple in-stream habitat suitability model were implementedand the effect on output for one organism at 22 sites on one short section of a river wasexamined. The model uses only two factors, depth and velocity, to calculate quality and a thirdfactor, width to quantify utility. The implementations were based on 3 multi-criteria evaluationapproaches: Weighted Average, Fuzzy Sets and Bayesian probability. There was broadagreement between the formulations but important differences in detail. The model outputsindicate that uncertainty arising from model formulation is significant and can have a bearingon planning decisions. There is a complex interaction between the formulations …

Globalisation, Good Governance And Democracy: The Interface, Dare Arowolo, Folorunso Aluko

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)

Globalisation has been an important factor in accelerating democracy’s growth in recent decades. In this globalised world, rapid development and global proliferation of new technologies and telecommunications, and integration of the world economy through trade and investment, have increased the role and power of regional and global institutions (Cheema and Maguire, 2004). This promoted and strengthened the spread of democracy while also providing the leverage for good governance. Globalisation impacts on the mode of governance that a country operates either as a symbol of universality or for uniformity. This unstoppable trend has homogenised governance on a global scale while depicting …

Leadership To Run The World: A Mandate For Higher Education, Gregory Eastwood

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)

“Leadership is an essentially moral act,” said A. Bartlett Giamatti, former president of Yale University, who later became Commissioner of Baseball. But consider these few news items, selected from a multitude of candidates: Eliot Spitzer, former governor of New York, resigned after his involvement with a prostitute was made public. Rod Blagojevich, former governor of Illinois, was removed from office by unanimous vote of the Illinois State Senate after conviction on federal corruption charges. Bernard Madoff, former Wall Street executive and NASDAQ chair, currently is incarcerated in federal prison after conviction for investment fraud. Rev. Jeffrey Sarkies, a popular pastor …

The Reluctance Of Korean Education In The Face Of Change, Paul Jambor

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)

It should first be stated that there are many bright students in the Korean educational system and Korea has produced great waves in the information technology fields and the Korean economy has leaped in bounds from the days of poverty and despair, following the Korean War, to the present days when Korea has proven itself to be a world class country with a world class economy. Nevertheless, the Korean system of education has seemingly lagged behind the advances the Korean information technology and semiconductor industries have enjoyed.

Environmental Law, Travis M. Trimble Jul 2010

Environmental Law, Travis M. Trimble

Mercer Law Review

In this survey period, the United States Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit decided two cases addressing the scope of agency discretion to interpret statutes. In Friends of the Everglades v. South Florida Water Management District, the Eleventh Circuit held that the Environmental Protection Agency's adoption of the "unitary waters" definition of navigable waters under the Clean Water Act was reasonable even though that approach had been universally rejected by the courts as an interpretation of the statute prior to the agency's rule. In Miccosukee Tribe of Indians of Florida v. United States, the Eleventh Circuit upheld …

Recombinant Factors For Hemostasis, Jennifer Calcaterra Jul 2010

Recombinant Factors For Hemostasis, Jennifer Calcaterra

Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Trauma deaths are a result of hemorrhage in 37% of civilians and 47% military personnel and are the primary cause of death for individuals under 44 years of age. Current techniques used to treat hemorrhage are inadequate for severe bleeding. Preliminary research indicates that fibrin sealants (FS) alone or in combination with a dressing may be more effective; however, it has not been economically feasible for widespread use because of prohibitive costs related to procuring the proteins. To meet future demands for hemostatic therapies, FS will likely include recombinant human fibrinogen (rFI) and recombinant human Factor XIII (rFXIII). The underlying …

Spatial Heterogeneity Of Soil Nutrients And Plant Species In Herb-Dominated Communities Of Contrasting Land Use, Frank S. Gilliam, David A. Dick Jul 2010

Spatial Heterogeneity Of Soil Nutrients And Plant Species In Herb-Dominated Communities Of Contrasting Land Use, Frank S. Gilliam, David A. Dick

Biological Sciences Faculty Research

Recent interest in spatial pattern in terrestrial ecosystems has come from an awareness of theintimate relationship between spatial heterogeneity of soil resources and maintenance of plant species diversity. Soil and vegetation can vary spatially inresponse to several state factors of the system. In this study, we examined fine-scale spatial variability of soil nutrients and vascular plant species in contrasting herb-dominated communities (a pasture and an oldfield) to determine degree of spatial dependenceamong soil variables and plant community characteristics within these communities by sampling at 1-m intervals. Each site was divided into 25 1-m 2 plots. Mineral soil was sampled (2-cm …

Present Effects Of Past Wildfires On Leaf Litter Breakdown In Stream Ecosystems, Peter Koetsier, Teresa R. B. Krause, Quenton M. Tuckett

Biology Faculty Publications and Presentations

We investigated the present effects from a 10-year-old wildfire on leaf litter breakdown rates in 3 headwater streams in central Idaho. These systems experienced a massive debris flow one year after the fire. Based on soil instability and burn patterns, we identified 3 stream conditions: unburned, burned only, and burned/scoured. We placed leaf bags containing willow leaves (Salix sp.) in each stream type and removed bags at various time intervals until all bags were collected 100 days after their introduction. Leaf material was dried and weighed, and decay rate coefficients were calculated. Macroinvertebrates colonizing the bags were enumerated and identified, …

Center for Coastal and Ocean Mapping

Geodatabase development for coastal studies conducted by the Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) is essential to support the exploitation of hyperspectral imagery (HSI). NRL has found that the remote sensing and mapping science community benefits from coastal classifications that group coastal types based on similar features. Selected features in project geodatabases relate to significant biological and physical forces that shape the coast. The project geodatabases help researchers understand factors that are necessary for imagery post processing, especially those features having a high degree of temporal and spatial variability. NRL project geodatabases include a hierarchy of environmental factors that extend from shallow …

New Algorithms For Protein Structure Comparison And Protein Structure Prediction, Zaixin Lu Jul 2010

New Algorithms For Protein Structure Comparison And Protein Structure Prediction, Zaixin Lu

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

Proteins show a great variety of 3D conformations, which can be used to infer their evolutionary relationship and to classify them into more general groups; therefore algorithms of protein structure alignment, protein similarity search and protein structure prediction are very helpful for protein biologists. We developed new algorithms for the problems in this field. The algorithms are tested with structures from the Protein Data Bank (PDB) and SCOP, a Structure Classification of Protein Database. The experimental results show that our tools are more efficient than some well known systems for finding similar protein structures and predicting protein structures.

Biological And Physical Analysis Of Currents And Water Masses Off The Coast Of Southeast Florida, Stephanie Healey Jul 2010

Biological And Physical Analysis Of Currents And Water Masses Off The Coast Of Southeast Florida, Stephanie Healey

HCNSO Student Theses and Dissertations

Biological and physical sampling of a 10km long, east-west transect was performed during 2007, off the coast of southeast Florida. Temperature and salinity measurements were recorded using a conductivity-temperature-depth (CTD) sensor, and current direction and magnitude measurements were recorded using an acoustic Doppler current profiler (ADCP). Zooplankton samples were collected, during the daytime, using a Tucker multiple net mid-water trawl, with 760μm mesh, at intended depths of ~25m and ~200m, at three stations along the transect. Laboratory analysis indicated that several currents and water masses influenced the density distribution of calanoid copepods and chaetognaths. During April and September 2007, a …

Draft Tampa Bay Interagency Seagrass Monitoring Program Training And Field Manual, Walt Avery, Roger Johansson, J. J. Pacowta

Reports

To insure quality assurance of the data collected among the various agencies, a training session is held each fall immediately prior to baywide TBISP monitoring. The goals of the session are to 1) determine the variability of the data collection among the agencies and to minimize this variability and 2) assess the repeatability of a seagrass investigator in determining species composition, abundance, density, and height. The purpose of this manual is to provide a seagrass researcher with information concerning TBISP protocols and results.
