Hepatitis C Virus Core-Derived Peptides Inhibit Genotype 1b Viral Genome Replication Via Interaction With Ddx3x, Chaomin Sun, Cara T. Pager, Guangxiang Luo, Peter Sarnow, Jamie H. D. Cate

Microbiology, Immunology, and Molecular Genetics Faculty Publications

The protein DDX3X is a DEAD-box RNA helicase that is essential for the hepatitis C virus (HCV) life cycle. The HCV core protein has been shown to bind to DDX3X both in vitro and in vivo. However, the specific interactions between these two proteins and the functional importance of these interactions for the HCV viral life cycle remain unclear. We show that amino acids 16-36 near the N-terminus of the HCV core protein interact specifically with DDX3X both in vitro and in vivo. Replication of HCV replicon NNeo/C-5B RNA (genotype 1b) is significantly suppressed in HuH-7-derived cells expressing green fluorescent …

Continuing Bonds : Childhood Sibling Loss And Its Perceived Long-Term Outcomes : A Project Based Upon An Independent Investigation, Laura Marguerite Miles

Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

This exploratory qualitative study was undertaken to determine if there are perceived long-term effects on adults who lost a sibling in childhood to death. Secondly, are the long-term effects of this loss expressed in the form of continuing bonds, or making meaning from the loss of a loved one? Continuing bonds can take different forms, from keeping pictures or mementoes of the deceased, to telling stories to the generations that follow. Seven participants were recruited using snowball sampling. They ranged in age from 41-69, and the death of their sibling occurred 29-63 years ago. Each participant responded to open-ended questions …

Siblings' Perspectives : The Impacts Of Having A Sibling Who Suffers From An Eating Disorder : A Project Based Upon An Independent Investigation, Sarah A. Quish

Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore sibling's perspectives on growing up with a sibling who suffers from an eating disorder. The study particularly examined sibling's reactions and responses to the discovery and progression of his or her sibling's eating disorder. An analysis of the literature revealed a lack of research on the experience of having a sibling who suffers from an eating disorder. This review of literature also brought forth the alarming prevalence and life-threatening nature of eating disorders. Ten siblings participated in semi-structured interviews which asked them to talk about their experiences of having a sibling …

Therapists' Attachment Style And The Use Of Touch In The Therapeutic Relationship : A Project Upon An Independent Investigation, Michelle Lynn Waddell Sep 2010

Therapists' Attachment Style And The Use Of Touch In The Therapeutic Relationship : A Project Upon An Independent Investigation, Michelle Lynn Waddell

Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

This study seeks to answer the question: In what ways is the current adult attachment style of experienced mental health professionals associated with their use of touch in practice with adult clients? The hypotheses were that therapist with fearful and dismissive attachment styles would be less likely to engage in touch with clients, while those with a preoccupied style would engage in touch more often, and those with a secure attachment would show no particular pattern in their use of touch. This study was undertaken in order to further understandings of the factors involved in therapists decisions to and not …

Evaluating Stormwater Best Management Practices In A Small Urban Watershed, Kerry Gregg Bassore Sep 2010

Evaluating Stormwater Best Management Practices In A Small Urban Watershed, Kerry Gregg Bassore

Water Resources Professional Project Reports

Urban growth adversely affects water quality by increasing the amount of nonpoint source pollutants that are transported to receiving waters. Phase IT of the National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) is a regulatory program designed to confront the non-point source pollution problem. Bernalillo County, New Mexico, is one of many counties that are required to identify Best Management Practices (BMPs) to control non-point source pollution under Phase IT of the NPDES. The Adobe Acres stormwater lift station drains storm flows that originate from an urban residential area in Bernalillo County and discharge to the Rio Grande. This project begins to …

Chemistry Variation During Purging Of Alluvial Wells At Los Alamos National Laboratory, Eric T. Riebsomer Sep 2010

Chemistry Variation During Purging Of Alluvial Wells At Los Alamos National Laboratory, Eric T. Riebsomer

Water Resources Professional Project Reports

The purpose of this study is to determine how chemistry results vary from shallow alluvial wells during purging. We sampled seven shallow alluvial wells at four different purge volumes. Drawdown and the field parameters pH, DO, EC, ORP, and turbidity were collected to determine stabilization trends for each well. During each sampling event, water samples were collected after purging one-half, one, two, and three well bores, and later analyzed for metals (unfiltered), and major cations and anions (filtered). Drawdown and turbidity were the only field parameters measured that affected the results. LAO-0.7, MCO-5, MCO-7, and CDBO-6 each had drawdown in …

Evaluation Of Targeted Influenza Vaccination Strategies Via Population Modeling., John Glasser, Denis Taneri, Zhilan Julie Feng, Jen-Hsiang Chuang, Peet Tüll, William Thompson, Mary Mccauley, James Alexander

Department of Mathematics Faculty Publications

Background

Because they can generate comparable predictions, mathematical models are ideal tools for evaluating alternative drug or vaccine allocation strategies. To remain credible, however, results must be consistent. Authors of a recent assessment of possible influenza vaccination strategies conclude that older children, adolescents, and young adults are the optimal targets, no matter the objective, and argue for vaccinating them. Authors of two earlier studies concluded, respectively, that optimal targets depend on objectives and cautioned against changing policy. Which should we believe?

Methods and Findings

In matrices whose elements are contacts between persons by age, the main diagonal always predominates, reflecting …

Nine middle-school math teachers at two rural schools were assessed for their pedagogical content knowledge in geometry and measurement in the specific area of decomposing and recomposing one-dimensional and two-dimensional figures. A Pearson's Product Moment Coefficient statistical test was used to compare teacher assessment scores of each pedagogical content knowledge level with student Standard of Learning math scores. The results showed that there is a relationship between teacher pedagogical content knowledge and student Standards of …

The Health Of Latinos In Massachusetts: A Snapshot, Dharma Cortés, Rodolfo R. Vega Sep 2010

The Health Of Latinos In Massachusetts: A Snapshot, Dharma Cortés, Rodolfo R. Vega

Gastón Institute Publications

People’s health outcomes are shaped in part by non-biological factors. Most immediately, limited access to health care services can have a deleterious impact on individuals’ health outcomes (Andrulis, 1998). In turn, access to healthcare services is influenced by socioeconomic factors such as whether a person has health insurance or the financial means to pay for their health care. Familiarity with the health care system is another important factor that may influence an individual’s access to healthcare services (Morgan et al., 2008). Language also plays an important role in health outcomes. For instance, individuals with limited English proficiency may find it …
