MECHANISMS OF INTERLEUKIN-1â PRODUCTION IN CHLAMYDIA TRACHOMATIS INFECTED TROPHOBLASTS. Crina M. Boeras, Vikki Abrahams, and Paula B. Kavathas. Department of Laboratory Medicine, Yale University, School of Medicine, New Haven, CT. In a normal pregnancy the immune system plays the critical task of protecting the fetus from the constant threat posed by pathogens while limiting the effects of the mothers immune response on the fetus itself. Viral and bacterial infections can cause preterm labor and intrauterine growth restriction, and the placental trophoblasts express pattern recognition receptors (PRRs) to help detect invading pathogens and initiate an effective immune response. Chlamydia trachomatis (Ct) …

Little Rock Woman's Christian Temperance Union, 1888 To 1903, Jane Ann Wilkerson

Theses and Dissertations

In discussions about the women's rights, organizations such as the National Organization for Women or the National American Woman Suffrage Association often overshadow the contributions of the Woman's Christian Temperance Union (WCTU). Most know of the WCTU's efforts against alcohol but little is known about the group's work toward woman's suffrage. In fact, the Little Rock organization became one of the WCTU's strongest local unions. It worked to change the lives of women and children not only in the city, but also statewide. Members' skills and unique backgrounds helped the union reach many of its goals. During these efforts it …

East Of The Jordan: A Journey Of Surrender, Sacrifice, And Survival, Mike David Rush Sep 2010

East Of The Jordan: A Journey Of Surrender, Sacrifice, And Survival, Mike David Rush

Theses and Dissertations

My thesis is a memoir recounting my spiritual journey which took place from the fall of 1994 to the fall of 1997. Each of those three years represents a part of the grander story - the year I returned to teach in the Netherlands having been unable to find a job in the states, the year I served on a chapel youth leadership team with a man I felt certain was a sexual predator, and the year I worked at Walmart unable to find a teaching job in the States after flying back to testify in his court martial. I …

Where Have You Gone? : The Function Of Emotional Proximity In The Bereavement Experiences Of Adult Children Who Have Lost A Parent To Suicide : A Project Based Upon An Independent Investigation, Christie Robin Coy

Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

This study was undertaken to look at the ways in which adult children suicide survivors made meaning of their losses by exploring emotional proximity, defined by the researcher for this study as the history, quality, and characteristics of the relationship between adult child and parent at the time of the suicide. The purpose was to elucidate the bereavement experiences of this little-studied subgroup of survivors. Seven adult children survivors from the Boston metropolitan area shared their stories of parental loss through a two-fold process that included completion of a demographic questionnaire and participation in semi-structured, open-ended interviews. A supplementary Internet …

Strategies For The Elimination Of Matrix Effects In The Lc-Ms/Ms Analysis Of The Lipophilic Toxins Okadaic Acid And Azaspiracid-1 In Molluscan Shellfish, Jane Kilcoyne, Elie Fux Sep 2010

Strategies For The Elimination Of Matrix Effects In The Lc-Ms/Ms Analysis Of The Lipophilic Toxins Okadaic Acid And Azaspiracid-1 In Molluscan Shellfish, Jane Kilcoyne, Elie Fux

Articles

Considerable efforts are being made worldwide to replace in vivo assays with instrumental methods of analysis for the monitoring of marine biotoxins in shellfish. Analysis of these compounds by the preferred technique of LC-MS/MS is challenged by matrix effects associated with shellfish tissue components. In methods validation, assessment of matrix interferences is imperative to ensure the accuracy of analytical results. We evaluated matrix interferences in the analysis of okadaic acid (OA) and azaspiracid 1 (AZA1) in mollucscan shellfish by using a conventional acidic method on electrospray triple stage quadrapole (TSQ) and hybrid quadrupole time of flight (QToF) instruments, with matrix …

Rural Community Characteristics, Economic Hardship, And Peer And Parental Influences In Early Adolescent Alcohol Use, Laura De Haan, Tina Boljevac, Kurt Schaefer Sep 2010

Rural Community Characteristics, Economic Hardship, And Peer And Parental Influences In Early Adolescent Alcohol Use, Laura De Haan, Tina Boljevac, Kurt Schaefer

University Faculty Publications and Creative Works

The study explores how differences in rural community contexts relate to early adolescent alcohol use. Data were gathered from 1,424 adolescents in the sixth through eighth grades in 22 rural Northern Plains communities, as well as 790 adults, parents, teachers, and community leaders. Multilevel modeling analyses revealed that community supportiveness, as perceived by adolescents, but not adults, was associated with less lifetime and past month alcohol use, and for past month use, this relationship was stronger than perceived peer drinking or parental closeness. Perceived peer drinking and parental closeness were not associated with past month use. Adolescents experiencing family economic …

A Comparative Study Of Fat Storage Quantitation In Nematode Caenorhabditis Elegans Using Label And Label-Free Methods., Kelvin Yen, Thuc T. Le, Ankita Bansal, Sri Devi Narasimhan, Ji-Xin Cheng, Heidi A. Tissenbaum

Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering Faculty Publications

The nematode Caenorhabditis elegans has been employed as a model organism to study human obesity due to the conservation of the pathways that regulate energy metabolism. To assay for fat storage in C. elegans, a number of fat-soluble dyes have been employed including BODIPY, Nile Red, Oil Red O, and Sudan Black. However, dye-labeled assays produce results that often do not correlate with fat stores in C. elegans. An alternative label-free approach to analyze fat storage in C. elegans has recently been described with coherent anti-Stokes Raman scattering (CARS) microscopy. Here, we compare the performance of CARS microscopy …

Assessing The Sensitivity Of Water To Surface, Soil, Rock, And Cave Conditions In Fitton Cave, Northern Arkansas, Drew Aaron Westerman Sep 2010

Assessing The Sensitivity Of Water To Surface, Soil, Rock, And Cave Conditions In Fitton Cave, Northern Arkansas, Drew Aaron Westerman

Theses and Dissertations

Fitton Cave, located within the Buffalo National River in north-central Arkansas, offers a window into a relatively pristine portion of the Ozark Plateaus Aquifer. This region is one of the largest karst aquifers in the United States, providing more than 1.8 million people with drinking water. Understanding what happens to water as it moves from the surface to subsurface is requisite for utilization, management, and sustainability of karst aquifers as water resources. As population pressures increase, assessment of geochemical and hydrologic processes from pristine systems such as Fitton Cave will prove invaluable for providing baseline conditions. By integrating vascular plant …

Design, Synthesis, And Characterization Of A Tetraamide Macrocyclic Ligand And Its Fe- Complex For Green Oxidation Chemistry, Shane Z. Sullivan

Theses and Dissertations

This work presents the spectroscopic characterization and catalytic investigation of a FeIII-complex of a tetraamidomacrocyclic ligand. Under catalytic conditions the complex is soluble in aqueous solutions and rapidly activates hydrogen peroxide under mild reaction conditions. Both the kinetics and extent of water-soluble dye and paper effluent H2O2-bleaching catalyzed was found to be comparable to known FeIII-TAML complexes. As an additional application, the complex showed potential for the synthesis of a variety of Noxides from their corresponding amines as demonstrated by its high turnover number and essentially stoichiometric yield in selected amines. Electrospray ionization-mass spectrometry of the complex reveals a peak …

The Use Of Audience Response Systems In Nursing Education: Best Practice Guidelines, Nicole Mareno, Marie Bremner, Christie Emerson

Faculty Articles

The use of Audience Response Systems (ARS) or 'clickers' as an active learning strategy in nursing education has been steadily on the rise. ARS technology allows the dynamic engagement of students in the classroom by providing immediate two-way communication between faculty and students. ARS can be used to explore knowledge and common misconceptions, act as a springboard for classroom discussions, and can be used for testing or evaluation. The aim of this paper is to present best practice guidelines for both novice and experienced ARS technology users. A summary of the state of the research in this area will be …

Core Research Site Web Quadrat Data For The Net Primary Production Study At The Sevilleta National Wildlife Refuge, New Mexico (1999-Present), Esteban Muldavin

Sevilleta LTER Program Data

This dataset is part of a long-term study at the Sevilleta LTER measuring net primary production (NPP) across four distinct ecosystems: creosote-dominant shrubland (Site C, est. winter 1999), black grama-dominant grassland (Site G, est. winter 1999), blue grama-dominant grassland (Site B, est. winter 2002), and pinon-juniper woodland (Site P, est. winter 2003). Net primary production is a fundamental ecological variable that quantifies rates of carbon consumption and fixation. Estimates of NPP are important in understanding energy flow at a community level as well as spatial and temporal responses to a range of ecological processes. Above-ground net primary production is the …

Coyote Population Densities At The Sevilleta National Wildlife Refuge, New Mexico (1992-2004), Robert Parmenter

Sevilleta LTER Program Data

This study measured the population dynamics of coyotes in the grasslands and creosote shrublands of McKenzie Flats, Sevilleta National Wildlife Refuge. The study was begun in January, 1992, and continued quarterly each year. Coyotes were sampled via scat counts along the roads of McKenzie Flats during winter, spring, summer, and fall of each year. The entire road transect was 21.5 miles in length. Scat counts over a week period (number of scats/mile/day) in each season along the roads were used to calculate the densities of coyotes (number of coyotes per square kilometer). Results from 1992 to 2002 indicated that autumn …

Act 60: The Past, Present, And Future Of School Consolidation In Arkansas, Nathan C. Jensen, Gary W. Ritter

Policy Briefs

Since its passage in 2004, Arkansas’ Act 60 has had a major impact on the smallest school districts in Arkansas. The law requires school districts to be consolidated if their enrollment drops below 350 for two consecutive years. This policy brief will report on the numbers and types of schools and districts that have closed since the passage of Act 60. Moreover, the brief will evaluate the enrollment trends to predict which school districts are “at-risk” of being consolidated for dropping below the 350 student threshold established by Act 60. The data for this policy brief is excerpted from a …

Aromatic Acid Metabolites Of Escherichia Coli K-12 Can Induce The Marrab Operon, Lon Chubiz, Christopher Rao Sep 2010

Aromatic Acid Metabolites Of Escherichia Coli K-12 Can Induce The Marrab Operon, Lon Chubiz, Christopher Rao

Biology Department Faculty Works

MarR is a key regulator of the marRAB operon involved in antibiotic resistance and solvent stress tolerance in Escherichia coli. We show that two metabolic intermediates, 2,3-dihydroxybenzoate and anthranilate, involved in enterobactin and tryptophan biosynthesis, respectively, can activate marRAB transcription. We also found that a third intermediate involved in ubiquinone biosynthesis, 4-hydroxybenzoate, activates marRAB transcription in the absence of TolC. Of the three, however, only 2,3-dihydroxybenzoate directly binds MarR and affects its activity.

The Anchor, Volume 124.03: September 15, 2010, Hope College

The Anchor: 2010

The Anchor began in 1887 and was first issued weekly in 1914. Covering national and campus news alike, Hope College’s student-run newspaper has grown over the years to encompass over two-dozen editors, reporters, and staff. For much of The Anchor's history, the latest issue was distributed across campus each Wednesday throughout the academic school year (with few exceptions). In recent years The Anchor moved to monthly print issues and a more frequently updated website. The Anchor is now published in print twice per academic semester. Occasionally, the volume and/or issue numbering is irregular.
