It is inherently speculative to address future foreign perceptions of chemical weapons (CW) utility. This is not only because it concerns things that may be, rather than things that already are, but also because those who might be considering or already pursuing CW capabilities for the future will not be openly sharing their views. Classified sources and assessments also cannot be addressed in this unclassified forum. An accurate reconstruction of the eukaryotic tree of life is essential to identify the innovations underlying the diversity of microbial and macroscopic (e.g., plants and animals) eukaryotes. Previous work has divided eukaryotic diversity into a small number of high-level "supergroups," many of which receive strong support in phylogenomic analyses. However, the abundance of data in phylogenomic analyses can lead to highly supported but incorrect relationships due to systematic phylogenetic error. Furthermore, the paucity of major eukaryotic lineages (19 or fewer) included in these genomic studies may exaggerate systematic error and reduce power to evaluate hypotheses. The formation of the central nervous system depends on the coordinated development of neural and glial cell types that arise from a common precursor. Using an existing group of zebrafish mutants generated by viral insertion, we performed a "shelf-screen" to identify genes necessary for astroglial development and axon scaffold formation. We screened 274 of 315 viral insertion lines using antibodies that label axons (anti-Acetylated Tubulin) and astroglia (anti-Gfap) and identified 25 mutants with defects in gliogenesis, glial patterning, neurogenesis, and axon guidance. This article presents a view of science that counters the teleological and authoritative way in which it is presented in arenas of popular discourse ranging from public schools, science magazines (such as Wired), community meetings, and popular books written by scientists. Noting the strange conflation of “evolution” (a branch of science) and “science” (as a way of thinking), the essay presents psychoanalytic and scientific arguments that suggest that evolution is equated with science in the public because evolution represents the return of the repressed element that founds any discourse which seeks to remain self contained. Malignant germ cell tumours of the mediastinum are rare, presenting mostly in young males. These are bulky tumours, mostly intrathoracic, infiltrating into adjacent structures early in the growth process. Patients may present with symptoms of compression. Occasionally, mediastinal adenopathy and superior vena cava (SVC) syndrome may occur. We discuss a case of a 19 year old boy with six weeks history of progressively worsening shortness of breath and mid-sternal chest heaviness and one month history of swelling of the face and upper limbs. The entire face and upper extremities were grossly oedematous with engorged veins suggesting SVC syndrome. CT scan …

The Chemical Castration Of Recidivist Sex Offenders In Canada: A Matter Of Faith, Matthew R. Kutcher

Chemical castration refers to the use of medication to reduce male testosterone to pre-pubertal levels. Since the mid-20th century reports have detailed this practice in attempts to control pathological sexual behaviour. In 2006, the Canadian Federal Court of Appeal ruled it constitutional for the National Parole Board to require that recidivist sex offenders, if found to be long-term offenders, be chemically castrated under their conditions of release. This paper examines the chemical castration of recidivist sex offenders in Canada through a review of long-term offender hearings reported between 1997 and 2009. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the therapeutic effect and mechanism of extract of ginkgo biloba (EGB) in treatment of diet-induced non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) in rats. METHODS: The experiment was conducted in the Laboratory, Department of Gastroenterology, Renmin Hospital of Wuhan University, Wuhan, China from June 2009 to December 2009. In this study, the rat model of NASH was produced by feeding high-fat diet. Sixty rats were randomly divided into 3 groups: Normal group: normal diet, drinking water; Model group: high-fat diet, single-distilled water 10 ml/kg gavage once a day for 12 weeks; and Treated group: high-fat diet, EGB 6 mg/kg gavage once …

E. P. Thompson used the Confucian trope of “rectification of human names” to summarize the major themes of his work. Such rectification has both political and scholarly ramifications that extend to poststructuralist debates over historical discourse (Ranajit Guha’s meditation on the method of Subaltern Studies, Hayden White’s theory of rhetorical universalism); organic relationship between working-class gesture, linguistic philosophy, and political economy (as exemplified in Piero Sraffa's renowned contribution to the "epistemological break" between the early and late Ludwig Wittgenstein's philosophy); and the universality of class struggle in defining the crucial intellectual breakthroughs of the 1970s, from the works of Michel …

Axial patterning is crucial for organogenesis. During Drosophila eye development, dorso-ventral (DV) axis determination is the first lineage restriction event. The eye primordium begins with a default ventral fate, on which the dorsal eye fate is established by expression of the GATA-1 transcription factor pannier (pnr). Earlier, it was suggested that loss of pnr function induces enlargement in the dorsal eye due to ectopic equator formation. Interestingly, we found that in addition to regulating DV patterning, pnr suppresses the eye fate by downregulating the core retinal determination genes eyes absent (eya), sine oculis (so) and dacshund (dac) to define the …

Jahn-Teller Coupling And Fragmentation After Core-Shell Excitation Ini Cf4 Investigated By Partial-Ion-Yield Spectroscopy, Renaud Guillemin, Wayne C. Stolte, Maria Novella Piancastelli, Dennis W. Lindle

Chemistry and Biochemistry Faculty Research

We investigate fragmentation processes induced by core-level photoexcitation in CF4 at both the carbon and fluorine K edges by means of partial-ion-yield spectroscopy. The molecule CF₄ is a textbook example of systems in which Jahn-Teller coupling strongly manifests itself in the photoabsorption spectrum. Spectral features related to Jahn-Teller and quasi-Jahn-Teller splitting are observed, and important differences in the fragmentation pathways are revealed depending on the symmetries of the core-excited states. We interpret these experimental observations on the grounds of symmetry lowering from the Td to the C3v point group as well as preferential orientation with respect …
