Background: Microarrays are invaluable tools for genome interrogation, SNP detection, and expression analysis, among other applications. Such broad capabilities would be of value to many pathogen research communities, although the development and use of genome-scale microarrays is often a costly undertaking. Therefore, effective methods for reducing unnecessary probes while maintaining or expanding functionality would be relevant to many investigators.

Results: Taking advantage of available genome sequences and annotation for Toxoplasma gondii (a pathogenic parasite responsible for illness in immunocompromised individuals) and Plasmodium falciparum (a related parasite responsible for severe human malaria), we designed a single oligonucleotide microarray capable of supporting …

American society does not require civil litigants to bear the actual cost of using the court; those costs are borne almost entirely by the taxpayer (i.e., the “civil judicial subsidy”). In this Article I ask: is that right? Or is there a more desirable way to apportion court usage costs between the state and litigants? I develop an evaluative framework that facilitates analysis of the purpose, contours, and cost of the current judicial subsidy. We subsidize court use because, in theory, there are certain “social positives” associated with public adjudication. To date the unspoken assumption has been that these social …

Directional bonding interactions in solid-state atomic lattices dictate the unique symmetries of atomic crystals, resulting in a diverse and complex assortment of three-dimensional structures that exhibit a wide variety of material properties. Methods to create analogous nanoparticle superlattices are beginning to be realized, but the concept of anisotropy is still largely underdeveloped in most particle assembly schemes. Some examples provide interesting methods to take advantage of anisotropic effects, but most are able to make only small clusters or lattices that are limited in crystallinity and especially in lattice parameter programmability. The American Psychological Association (APA) maintains that the integrity and validity of research findings is partially supported by reporting adequate sample demographic characteristics and methodological procedures. This paper is intended as a review of progress as the field has recognized the importance of accounting for participant diversity in psychological research. We hope that this review serves as a reminder to collect this information and include it in published manuscripts. We also suggest that editors and reviewers ask for this information on manuscripts where it has not been included.

The availability of e-textbooks is increasing along with the variety of electronic readers. According to the “2010 Horizon Report,” adoption of this technology will be widespread in academia in two to three years as it will “… reduce costs, save students from carrying pounds of textbooks and contribute to the environmental efforts…” (Johnson, Levine, Smith, & Stone, 2010, p.6). Will e-textbooks become favored by faculty in higher education? Paclitaxel And Obatoclax Synergize To Kill Paclitaxel-Resistant Small Cell Lung Cancer Cells, Neil Manimala

Honors Thesis and Capstone Projects

Small molecule BH3 mimetic obatoclax (GX15-070) enhances the chemotherapeutic action of paclitaxel by increasing in vitro occurrence of Type I cell death (apoptosis) in selected small cell lung cancer (SCLC) lines. SCLC is historically resistant to paclitaxel treatment, yielding only single-digit response rates in second line chemotherapy. This resistance is attributed to a paclitaxel-induced upregulation of mitochondrial pro-survival protein bcl-xL. To increase SCLC response rates to taxol treatment, it is important to find a therapeutic modality that disables the bcl-xL line of defense against apoptosis. Library Scholarly Publications

Academic libraries support their universities' goals of developing and maintaining successful research programs. As the information landscape and researcher practices change, recognition of the library's role in supporting research may be diminishing. This article will explore some aspects of the academic research enterprise and identify opportunities libraries can use to position themselves as key members of the research enterprise as well as increase their visibility among the research community. Successful initiatives implemented at Wayne State University will be highlighted to illustrate strategies librarians can use at their own institutions.

"A Repeating World": Redeeming The Past And Future In The Utopian Dystopia Of Jeanette Winterson's The Stone Gods, Hope Jennings

English Language and Literatures Faculty Publications

The article examines how Jeanette Winterson's book The Stone Gods follows a spatio-temporal alternative to the pattern of dystopian apocalypse and the utopian breach from history. It notes that such alternative showed Winterson's objective to tear down repressive ideologies through articulated narratives that no longer enact similar self-destructive cycles. It also points that the book is a pertinent illustration of a feminist critical dystopia.
