Introduction: The Adequacy Of The Presidential Succession System In The 21st Century: Filling The Gaps And Clarifying The Ambiguities In Constitutional And Extraconstitutional Arrangements, William Michael Treanor Jan 2010

Introduction: The Adequacy Of The Presidential Succession System In The 21st Century: Filling The Gaps And Clarifying The Ambiguities In Constitutional And Extraconstitutional Arrangements, William Michael Treanor

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

Inevitably, the events of the day dominate the political agenda. The issues of presidential succession have been attended to in our national history only sporadically because, at most times, the question of who succeeds the President in cases of death, resignation, or incapacity does not have immediate relevance: the President is in good health, the presumption is he will serve out the term of his office for which he was elected, and political leaders ignore succession issues as if they were of only theoretical interest. And yet, again and again, succession questions have become of the most immediate consequence in …

Allocation Of Fishing Opportunities In Regional Fisheries Management Organizations: A Legal Analysis In The Light Of Equity, Maria Cecilia Engler Palma Jan 2010

Allocation Of Fishing Opportunities In Regional Fisheries Management Organizations: A Legal Analysis In The Light Of Equity, Maria Cecilia Engler Palma

LLM Theses

The allocation of fishing opportunities is one of the most difficult challenges for high seas fisheries management. There is an ongoing search for equitable and transparent allocation frameworks. This thesis explores whether, under what conditions, and with what shortcomings, a legal concept of equity can provide assistance in the development of such a framework. To this end, it reviews the historical origins of allocation of quotas in international fisheries, and summarizes the current global and regional legal frameworks for allocation and regional practices. It then analyzes whether intergenerational and intra-generational equity is considered in the international legal framework for high …

Statistical Topology Via Morse Theory, Persistence And Nonparametric Estimation, Peter Bubenik, Gunnar Carlsson, Peter T. Kim, Zhiming Luo Jan 2010

Statistical Topology Via Morse Theory, Persistence And Nonparametric Estimation, Peter Bubenik, Gunnar Carlsson, Peter T. Kim, Zhiming Luo

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications

In this paper we examine the use of topological methods for multivariate statistics. Using persistent homology from computational algebraic topology, a random sample is used to construct estimators of persistent homology. This estimation procedure can then be evaluated using the bottleneck distance between the estimated persistent homology and the true persistent homology. The connection to statistics comes from the fact that when viewed as a nonparametric regression problem, the bottleneck distance is bounded by the sup-norm loss. Consequently, a sharp asymptotic minimax bound is determined under the sup–norm risk over H¨older classes of functions for the nonparametric regression problem on …

Radical Hysterectomy With Pelvic Lymphadenectomy: Indications, Technique, And Complications, Rachel A. Ware, John R. Van Nagell Jr.

Obstetrics and Gynecology Faculty Publications

Radical hysterectomy with pelvic lymphadenectomy remains the treatment of choice for women with Stages IA2 and IB1carcinoma of the cervix, and selected patients with Stage II endometrial cancer. Improvement in surgical techniqe, administration of prophylactic antibiotics, thromboemolic prophylaxis, and advances in critical care medicine have resulted in lower operative morbidity associated with this procedure. Major urinary tract complications such as ureteral injury or vesico-vaginal fistula are now extremely rare (< 1%). Five-year survival rates following this procedure vary according to a number of clinical and histologic variables, and may be as high as 90% in women without lymph node metastases.

Kinetics Of G-Protein Coupled Receptor Endosomal Trafficking Pathways Revealed By Single Quantum Dots, Katye M. Fichter, Marc Flajolet, Paul Greengard, Tania Q. Vu Jan 2010

Kinetics Of G-Protein Coupled Receptor Endosomal Trafficking Pathways Revealed By Single Quantum Dots, Katye M. Fichter, Marc Flajolet, Paul Greengard, Tania Q. Vu

College of Natural and Applied Sciences

G-protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) are the largest protein superfamily in the human genome; they comprise 30% of current drug targets and regulate diverse cellular signaling responses. The role of endosomal trafficking in GPCR signaling regulation is gaining substantial consideration. However, this process remains difficult to study due to the inability to distinguish among many individual receptors, simultaneously trafficking within multiple endosomal pathways. Here we show accurate measurement of the internalization and endosomal trafficking of single groups of serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine, 5-HT) receptors using single quantum dot (QD) probes and quantitative colocalization. We demonstrate that the presence of a QD tag does not …

Synthesis, Structural Determination, And Biological Activity Of New 7-Hydroxy-3-Pyrazolyl-4h-Chromen- 4-Ones And Their O-\Beta-D-Glucosides, Kishor Hatzade, Vijay Taile, Pravin Gaidhane, Vishwas Ingle Jan 2010

Synthesis, Structural Determination, And Biological Activity Of New 7-Hydroxy-3-Pyrazolyl-4h-Chromen- 4-Ones And Their O-\Beta-D-Glucosides, Kishor Hatzade, Vijay Taile, Pravin Gaidhane, Vishwas Ingle

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

A convenient route to synthesize some new medicinally important 7-hydroxy-3-pyrazolyl chromones (3a-i) is described. The interaction of 7-hydroxy-3-formyl chromone (1) with various substituted acetophenones and further cyclization with hydrazine hydrate in an aprotic solvent followed by condensation with 2, 3, 4, 6-tetra-o-acetyl-\alpha-dglucopyranosyl bromide afforded 2, 3, 4, 6-tetra-o-acetyl-\beta-d-glucopyranosyloxy-3-(3-aryl-1H-pyrazol-5- yl)-4H-chromen-4-ones (4a-i). Later deacetylation with anhydrous zinc acetate in methanol gave 7-o-\beta-d-glucopyranosyloxy-3-(3-aryl- 1H-pyrazol-5-yl)-4H-chromen-4-ones (5a-i). These compounds were evaluated for their in vitro antimicrobial and anti-oxidant activity. The structures of these newly synthesized o-glucosides were established by IR, NMR, mass spectra, elemental analysis, and chemical analysis.

Synthesis And Characterisation Of Vanadium(Iii) Complexes Of Biphenylphenols, Neeraj Sharma, Maridula Thakur, S C. Chaudhry

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

The vanadium(III) complexes of composition [VCl_{3-n}(OAr^{1,2})_n.(THF)_2] (OAr^1 = 2-phenylphenoxo and OAr^2 = 4-phenylphenoxo, THF = tetrahydrofuran; n = 1 /to 3) were prepared by in situ reaction of VCl_3.(THF)_3 with sodium salt of respective phenols in tetrahydrofuran. The complexes were characterised by elemental analysis, molar conductance, FTIR, UV-Vis, and FAB-mass spectral and magnetic studies. The thermal behaviour of some of the complexes was studied by TG-DTA. The dinuclear phenoxy bridged octahedral structures for the complexes were inferred from the spectral and magnetic studies.

Senior Honors Theses and Projects

The purpose of this research is to shed light on the involvement of the Vav2 guanine nucleotide exchange factor in the Xenopus laevis EphA4 signaling pathway. In the first phase of the project, the presence of Vav2 mRNA within seven different Xenopus laevis embryogenic stages was detected via embryogenic stage collection, retrotranscription, PCR, using forward and reverse Vav2 primers, agarose gel electrophoresis, and UV gel visualization. In the second phase of the project, Western Blotting techniques were used to determine the presence of Vav2 protein in Xenopus laevis embryogenic stages.

Flower Symbolism As Female Sexual Metaphor, Andrea Frownfelter Jan 2010

Flower Symbolism As Female Sexual Metaphor, Andrea Frownfelter

Senior Honors Theses and Projects

The watercolor paintings that I created from September 2009 to March 2010 use flowers as metaphorical subject matter to address issues and emotions associated with the topic of female sexuality. My goal was to use the long-standing tradition of flowers as symbols of female genitalia (which will be thoroughly explained in part two of this thesis) to allude to my personal attitudes, experiences, observations, and worries in a manner that would be easier for me to express and less abrasive for my audience to accept. Creating these watercolors was certainly therapeutic for me; I hope that other women who have …

Agronomy, Horticulture and Plant Science Faculty Publications

A potential pest of switchgrass, Panicum virgatum L., was first detected in South Dakota in 2004, where death of partially emerged leaves was noted in a small proportion of tillers. Similar “dead heart” symptoms were observed in switchgrass in Illinois during 2008 and adults of a stem-boring caterpillar were collected and identified as Blastobasis repartella (Dietz). In 2009, a survey of the central United States was used to estimate the distribution and abundance of this insect. In eight northern states, B. repartella was consistently found in both cultivated plots and natural stands of switchgrass. In four southern states, B. repartella …

Evaluation Of Intractable Epilepsy. Invasive Monitoring, Tarafa S. Baghdadi, Marwan W. Najjar

Neurosciences

Accurate localization of the epileptogenic zone is the fundamental key factor for successful epilepsy surgery. Despite the progress achieved in the field of neuroimaging, invasive intracranial recording is still the gold standard that helps recognize the patient population who may profit from surgery. Meticulous implantation of intracranial electrodes and judicious interpretation of their data is a definite need in a successful epilepsy program. Few centers in the Arab world are involved in that domain. Moreover, the society itself is not well informed to appreciate the potentials of surgical treatment of seizure disorders. In this review article, we will go over …
