Knowledge Games, Truth Seeking, And Organ Transplants Regulation, Marie-Andrée Jacob
Knowledge Games, Truth Seeking, And Organ Transplants Regulation, Marie-Andrée Jacob
Studio for Law and Culture
In this paper, I examine how different relations to knowledge are enacted among experts working in the governance of kidney transplants. Using fieldwork material gathered in transplant hospital and bureaus, I analyse how legal knowledge transacts with expert and lay knowledge in the context of very pragmatic tasks: detect the "intention to donate" and the "altruistic motivations" of those who procure a kidney to someone in need. My focus is on the management and circulation of knowledge, rather than the object of knowledge - transplants. Here, the law assigns its regulatory power onto experts, and the committees of experts in …

A New Nonlinear Classifier With A Penalized Signed Fuzzy Measure Using Effective Genetic Algorithm, Julia Hua Fang, Maria L. Rizzo, Honggang Wang, Kimberly Espy, Zhenyuan Wang
Mathematics Faculty Publications
This paper proposes a new nonlinear classifier based on a generalized Choquet integral with signed fuzzy measures to enhance the classification accuracy and power by capturing all possible interactions among two or more attributes. This generalized approach was developed to address unsolved Choquet-integral classification issues such as allowing for flexible location of projection lines in n-dimensional space, automatic search for the least misclassification rate based on Choquet distance, and penalty on misclassified points. A special genetic algorithm is designed to implement this classification optimization with fast convergence. Both the numerical experiment and empirical case studies show that this generalized …

A Biomechanical Comparison Of Locking Compression Plate Constructs With Plugs/Screws In Osteoporotic Bone Model, Krishna P. Desai
Browse all Theses and Dissertations
Locking compression plates are proven to be safe for use in open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) especially in osteoporotic bones. Because of various combinations of holes, the system provides more options for clinicians to use either locking screws or non-locking screws. This clinical research introduces screw like plugs which can be used along with the screws in case of locking compression plates. Experimental work was performed to determine the effectiveness of the plugs. The results showed that there is not a significant difference between the groups which used plugs and did not use the plugs, both in case of …

Cellular And Molecular Dissection Of Pluripotent Adult Somatic Stem Cells In Planarians, Norito Shibata, Labib Rouhana, Kiyokazu Agata
Biological Sciences Faculty Publications
Freshwater planarians, Plathelminthes, have been an intriguing model animal of regeneration studies for more than 100 years. Their robust regenerative ability is one of asexual reproductive capacity, in which complete animals develop from tiny body fragments within a week. Pluripotent adult somatic stem cells, called neoblasts, assure this regenerative ability. Neoblasts give rise to not only all types of somatic cells, but also germline cells. During the last decade, several experimental techniques for the analysis of planarian neoblasts at the molecular level, such as in situ hybridization, RNAi and fluorescence activated cell sorting, have been established. Moreover, information about genes …

Genomic sequencing projects are an abundant source of information for biological studies ranging from the molecular to the ecological in scale; however, much of the information present may yet be hidden from casual analysis. One such information domain, trends in codon usage, can provide a wealth of information about an organism's genes and their expression. Degeneracy in the genetic code allows more than one triplet codon to code for the same amino acid, and usage of these codons is often biased such that one or more of these synonymous codons is preferred. Detection of this bias is an important tool …

Zoonotic Disease In Ohio: Surveillance, Preparation, And Response, Erik B. Balster
Zoonotic Disease In Ohio: Surveillance, Preparation, And Response, Erik B. Balster
Master of Public Health Program Student Publications
This paper examines the state of public health preparation and response capacity to zoonotic infectious disease in the state of Ohio. A comprehensive literature review of zoonotic disease emergence and re-emergence, the National Veterinary Stockpile (NVS), the One Health Initiative, emergency response, and Ohio policy was performed in conjunction with telephone interviews. This study shows that responsibilities and systems integral to disease preparedness, such as sentinel surveillance and reporting, vary significantly between two key departments: the Ohio Department of Health (ODH) and the Ohio Department of Agriculture (ODA). Consistency and standardization of agency, mirroring the One Health Initiative, must be …

CEELAB Children's Books
While snorkeling, Katie and George come across a beautiful but unknown fish, so they snap a photo of it and take the photo to Dr. Linda at the University Marine Lab. She describes the unknown fish as a lionfish - a new, invasive species in western Atlantic waters that was most likely introduced by aquarium dumping (humans releasing unwanted plants and pets from aquarium tanks in to local waterways). Dr. Linda discusses the serious problems this fish and another invasive species, the green seaweed Caulerpa taxifolia, are causing to coral reefs and other aquatic habitats. She also explains better alternatives …

Corporations As Group Agents / Responsible Collectives In Theory And In Practice, Kathryn Real King
Corporations As Group Agents / Responsible Collectives In Theory And In Practice, Kathryn Real King
Dissertations
The goals of this dissertation are to examine the existing philosophical literature on group agency and collective responsibility and to demonstrate that this literature fails to sufficiently address the hierarchical organization of corporations, thereby severely limiting the applicability of this literature to real-world business situations. Where references to corporate hierarchy are made in the group agency and collective responsibility literature, they are incidental and descriptive only. This is in contrast to general business literature, business ethics literature, and organizational theory literature, which each highlight the importance of corporate hierarchy from their respective points of view. In this dissertation, the concept …

Towards A New Measure Of Playfulness: The Capacity To Fully And Freely Engage In Play, Rebecca Cornelli Sanderson
Dissertations
The current study involved the development and validation of a new measure of playfulness, the Project Joy Playfulness Scale (PJPS). The PJPS was designed specifically as a brief teacher-report measure for use in the preschool classroom. Playfulness was hypothesized to include four dimensions: Active Engagement, Internal Control, Joyfulness, and Social Connection. Blending academic knowledge with on-the-ground clinical experience, the measure was collaboratively developed and then tested in two separate phases of data collection.
In the first phase of the study, two hundred and twenty-two preschool students aged three to five were rated by two classroom teachers on the alpha version …

This Article argues that unless sexual partners explicitly agree otherwise, pregnancy should create a unique type of legal relationship. This relational default would come with certain obligations: in limited circumstances, a woman would be expected to communicate the fact of a pregnancy to the man with whom she conceived, and a man would be required to help support her during pregnancy and recovery. Child support obligations should kick in only once a child is born; until and unless this happens, a man's economic responsibility should be conceptualized as a responsibility towards the woman herself.
The goal of this Article is …

There is now a consensus, based on histological, biochemical and spectral absorption data, that the yellow colour observed at the macula lutea is a consequence of the selective accumulation of dietary xanthophylls in the central retina of the living eye. Scientific research continues to explore the function(s) of MP in the human retina, with two main hypotheses premised on its putative capacity to (1) protect the retina from (photo)-oxidative damage by means of its optical filtration and/or antioxidant properties, the so-called protective hypothesis and (2) influence the quality of visual performance by means of selective short wavelength light absorption prior …
Alcohol Use In College Students As A Function Of Reinforcement Sensitivity, Life Events, And Affect, Hyoung S. Lee
Alcohol Use In College Students As A Function Of Reinforcement Sensitivity, Life Events, And Affect, Hyoung S. Lee
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Mood has been commonly viewed as an important determinant of drinking, but studies of positive and negative affect and alcohol use have reported inconsistent results. It has been suggested that the relationship between negative affect and heavy drinking or drinking problems depends on individual vulnerability dimensions such as personality. Gray's Reinforcement Sensitivity Theory (RST) may provide a particularly useful framework in studies about alcohol use, connecting personality, motivational processes, and responses to environmental stimuli. In past studies, the sensitivity of Gray's Behavioral Activation System (BAS) has been linked to alcohol use, but results have been less consistent for the Behavioral …
Development Of Wide Band Gap Semiconductor Materials For Renewable Energy, S.M. Sarif Masud
Development Of Wide Band Gap Semiconductor Materials For Renewable Energy, S.M. Sarif Masud
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Several new wide band gap semiconductor nanocomposite photocatalytic materials have been synthesized from HTiNbO5 and HNb3O8 for solar energy conversion. As a source of renewable energy, the materials are being tested to produce hydrogen fuel from water via photolysis. The materials have high surface areas, are macroporous, and have flatband potentials suitable for reducing water to create hydrogen. Under visible or ultra violet light, the materials were found to be very promising as hydrogen evolving photocatalysts. As part of the synthesis of the composites, the catalysts also exhibited excellent catalytic activity under UV light for reducing ionic platinum and gold …
The Interplay Between Host Cells And The Human Pathogen Trypanosoma Cruzi: Role Of Toll-Like Receptors, Lilian Lie Nohara
The Interplay Between Host Cells And The Human Pathogen Trypanosoma Cruzi: Role Of Toll-Like Receptors, Lilian Lie Nohara
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
The protozoan parasite Trypanosoma cruzi is the etiologic agent of Chagas disease, a neglected infectious disease that is becoming a world health concern. This obligate intracellular parasite employs a diversity of molecules and strategies to successfully invade a wide variety of mammalian cells and modulate host immune responses, which are essential features for completion of its life cycle in the host. The major plasma membrane antigens of T. cruzi infective trypomastigote forms are glycosylphosphatidylinositol (tGPI)-anchored mucin-like glycoproteins. Although previous studies demonstrated that the proinflammatory responses induced by tGPIs are mediated by Toll-like receptor (TLR) 2, the involvement of other TLRs …
Interactions Of The Cellular Sumoylation System With Influenza A Virus And Its Non-Structural Protein Ns1a (Ns1a), Sangita Pal
Interactions Of The Cellular Sumoylation System With Influenza A Virus And Its Non-Structural Protein Ns1a (Ns1a), Sangita Pal
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
The most important current anti-influenza weapons, vaccination and antiviral drugs, can be rapidly rendered fully ineffective thanks to the virus's high mutational rate, which produces viruses exhibiting new antigenic properties and structural proteins insensitive to the drug's mechanism of action. One attractive alternative is to develop drugs that modulate the activity of cellular systems either required for viral growth or able to neutralize viral growth. Here we demonstrate that the cellular SUMOylation system, a post-translational modification involving the conjugation of the Small Ubiquitin-like MOdifier (SUMO) to specific protein targets using a Ubiquitin-like enzymatic cascade, interacts closely with influenza virus during …
A Specific Regulatory Role For Sgtα On The Maturation And Activation Of Steroid Hormone Receptors, Atanu Paul
A Specific Regulatory Role For Sgtα On The Maturation And Activation Of Steroid Hormone Receptors, Atanu Paul
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Steroid hormone receptors (SHRs) are ligand-dependent transcription factors belonging to the nuclear receptor superfamily. These receptors regulate various physiological functions in higher ordered eukaryotes. In the absence of hormone these receptors form a complex with molecular chaperones such as Hsp90 and Hsp70 and other cochaperones in the cytoplasm. Association with the Hsp90-Hsp70 chaperone machinery leads to the maturation of the Ligand Binding Domain (LBD) of the receptors and enables the receptors to bind hormone with high affinity. Upon binding with a specific hormone the receptors are translocated into the nucleus where they initiate transcription of specific genes. Although the involvement …
Examination Of The Cognitive Mechanisms Underlying Evaluative And Semantic Priming Effects By Varying Task Instructions: An Erp Study, Jennifer Hilda Taylor
Examination Of The Cognitive Mechanisms Underlying Evaluative And Semantic Priming Effects By Varying Task Instructions: An Erp Study, Jennifer Hilda Taylor
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
This study examined the cognitive processes that underlie stimulus identification and the activation of attitudes by investigating behavioral and psychophysiological effects in a priming paradigm. Cognitive mechanisms were investigated by examining evaluative and semantic priming effects on behavioral response times, the N400, and LPP event-related potential (ERP) components by varying tasks between-subjects. Participants either completed an evaluative task, a semantic task, or a feature-detection task. It was hypothesized that the behavioral evaluative priming effect would occur in the evaluative task and that the behavioral semantic priming effect would occur in the semantic and feature-detection tasks. The N400 was hypothesized to …
Categorization Of Functional Impairments In Human Locomotion Using The Methods Of The Fusion Of Multiple Sensors And Computational Intelligence, Huiying Yu
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
The main aim of this dissertation work was to develop an intelligent system to monitor, quantify and differentiate variances in human gait with high reliability and efficiency using the fusion of multiple sensor data and the methods of fuzzy inferential logic.
Gait disorders are heterogeneous and produce disabilities that vary substantially from individual to individual. The recognition, quantification and analysis of gait dysfunction is complex and, requires the integration of large amounts of data across multiple domains (kinetic, kinematic and electromyographic). Current systems for gait analysis generally require space and complex imaging equipment, as well as prolonged processing time, rendering …
