Romanian Men's Masculinities In Online Personal Advertisements, Sebastian E. Bartos, Voonchin Phua, Erin N. Avery Jan 2010

Romanian Men's Masculinities In Online Personal Advertisements, Sebastian E. Bartos, Voonchin Phua, Erin N. Avery

Sociology Faculty Publications

The present paper analyses Romanian men's masculinities via a quantitative and qualitative analysis of 380 online personal advertisements posted by men. The case of Romania is particularly interesting for understanding gender relations, since the country has recently experienced the impact of (post-) communisim, democratization, and resurging traditionalism. Romanian men's advertisements often express traditional gender relations: men-seeking-women are interested in attractive, less educated partners, while men-seeking-men emphasize discretion. Some men resist such patriarchal standards: men-seeking-women who are highly educated prefer educated women, and some men-seeking-men give out recognizable photos of themselves. Limitations and further research directions are discussed.

An Evaluation Of Habitat Models For The Common Loon (Gavia Immer), Alexis M. Rudko Jan 2010

An Evaluation Of Habitat Models For The Common Loon (Gavia Immer), Alexis M. Rudko

Master's Theses and Capstones

The Loon Preservation Committee (LPC) has been collecting field data for the common loon (Gavia immer) in New Hampshire for thirty-six years. A habitat model for lakes throughout New Hampshire was created by Dr. Mark Brennan for the time period 1980--2002. This project re-evaluates Brennan's habitat model using new data from 2003--2008. Two additional models, one with all lakes and another with the three largest lakes excluded, were created and compared to Brennan's model to see if the overall accuracy improved. These models show which lakes have high and low potential for loon habitat. The results of the re-evaluation of …

Growing Winter Sprouting Broccoli In Unheated High Tunnels In New Hampshire, Clifton A. Martin Jan 2010

Growing Winter Sprouting Broccoli In Unheated High Tunnels In New Hampshire, Clifton A. Martin

Master's Theses and Capstones

Winter sprouting broccoli was grown in a two-year study in unheated high tunnels in Durham, NH. Eleven cultivars were grown in a 9.1 m by 18.2 m unheated high tunnel and evaluated for yield, duration of harvest, and number of days from seed to harvest. Secondary rowcover applications were also evaluated for effects on yield, duration of harvest, number of days from seed to harvest, and for their effects on air temperature at plant height. All cultivars were harvested between March and May of 2008 and 2009. Yields ranged from 0.6 to 1.4 kilograms per meter squared. While mortality was …

Increasing Written Language Skills Utilizing Writing Software And Traditional Methods, Caroline Larson Jan 2010

Increasing Written Language Skills Utilizing Writing Software And Traditional Methods, Caroline Larson

Undergraduate Honors Theses

A grid based computer program, Clicker5, appeared to have many features that logically may assist struggling writers. It utilizes pictures, sound, speech synthesis, word banks and a spelling checker. Karemaker et al. (2008) examined the use of Clicker5 and observed increased attention and focus during reading, and greater gains in word recognition and rhyme awareness. Scattered research exists on some of the multimedia features that Clicker5 utilizes (e.g. auditory and visual instruction, specific feedback, student specific examples, Wissick & Gardner, 2000; composition processes and revision facilitation, MacArthur 2000; spell checkers with strategy instruction, and speech synthesis to increase error …

How Our Health Depends On Biodiversity, Eric Chivian M.D., Aaron Bernstein M.D., M.P.H. Jan 2010

How Our Health Depends On Biodiversity, Eric Chivian M.D., Aaron Bernstein M.D., M.P.H.

Ecosystem Disruption & Climate Change

The eminent Harvard biology Professor Edward O.Wilson once said about ants, “We need them to survive, but they don’t need us at all.” The same, in fact, could be said about countless other insects, bacteria, fungi, plankton, plants, and other organisms. This fundamental truth, however, is largely lost to many of us. Rather, we humans often act as if we are totally independent of Nature, as if our driving thousands of other species to extinction and disrupting the life-giving services they provide will have no effect on us whatsoever.

This summary, using concrete examples from our award-winning Oxford University Press …

Gaining Ground: Wetlands, Hurricanes, And The Economy: The Value Of Restoring The Mississippi River Delta, David Batker, Isabel De Torre, Robert Costanza, Paula Swedeen, John W. Day, Roelof Boumans, Kenneth Bagstad

Institute for Sustainable Solutions Publications and Presentations

This report shows conclusively that physical sustainability and delta expansion secures vast economic benefits locally and nationally. Within the context of the current financial crisis, investment in restoration secures short-term benefits of employment, income generation, greater ecosystem services and other economic benefits, and the long term goals of increased storm protection, greater oil and gas supply reliability and other economic benefits. A sustainable restoration of the Mississippi River Delta is a good investment with a high rate of return. Gaining ground is the most successful economic strategy for securing hurricane defenses and economic development.

“Why Are Those Leaves Red?” Making Sense Of The Complex Symbols: Ecosemiotics In Education, Creeping Snowberry, Sean Blenkinsop, Veronica Hotton

University Studies Faculty Publications and Presentations

Deciphering complex signals of constructed educational systems requires symbolic interpretation; deciphering complex signals that are inherently ignorant of their ecological roots requires a modification of a semiotic approach, which we call ecosemiotics. This paper examines one of many average classrooms through this veil of perception. As part of a larger reevaluation of learning in modern culture, we take apart some of the symbols of the classroom and its contained learning. The paper ends with the positing of several more ecosophically inclined teacher responses.

Genetic Diversity Of Wheat Cultivars From Turkey And U. S. Great Plains, Anyamanee Auvuchanon Jan 2010

Genetic Diversity Of Wheat Cultivars From Turkey And U. S. Great Plains, Anyamanee Auvuchanon

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Genetic diversity of wheat cultivars from Turkey and the Great Plains was studied under the hypothesis ‘Turkey’ wheat originated from Turkey and is the original hard red winter wheat landrace in the Great Plains. Wheat cultivars in Turkey and the Great Plains were selected for adaptation in two countries which were similar in climate. Twenty-two Turkish and twenty-three Great Plains wheat cultivars were selected for this study using SSR markers, agronomic, and end-use quality traits data. Wheat cultivars were clustered into five groups based on SSR markers and the clustering largely followed their countries of origin and pedigree. Modern Great …

The Foreclosure Crisis And The Antifragmentation Principle In State Property Law, David A. Dana Jan 2010

The Foreclosure Crisis And The Antifragmentation Principle In State Property Law, David A. Dana

University of Chicago Law Review

This Article explains how excessive fragmentation of property interests in mortgages has prevented reasonable modifications in loan terms and helped to create the current foreclosure crisis. The Article argues that Anglo-American property law reflects an antifragmentation principle. This principle offers historical grounding for and constitutional legitimacy to proposals to restructure the servicing of troubled loans so as to produce loan modifications when doing so would produce more net economic value than foreclosure. The Article also considers some reforms that could be adopted to prevent future cycles of excessive fragmentation of property interests in mortgages.

Synthesis And Structure Activity Relationship Studies Of A Natural Product-Derived Compound Library, Paul Whitney Swain Iii Jan 2010

Synthesis And Structure Activity Relationship Studies Of A Natural Product-Derived Compound Library, Paul Whitney Swain Iii

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Infectious diseases will always be a public health concern. The incidence of bacterial strains found in clinical settings that exhibit resistance to our current arsenal of antimicrobial drugs has risen sharply in the past twenty years and is projected to keep rising. The Infectious Diseases Society of America (IDSA) stated that more people die of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) infections per year in US hospitals than HIV/AIDS and tuberculosis combined. However, stagnation of research in the area of infectious diseases over the past forty years has left us dreadfully behind in the battle against these deadly pathogens.

Recently, researchers have …

Lucayan Beads From San Salvador, Bahamas (Ca. A.D. 900-1500), Jeffrey P. Blick, Richard Kim, Tyler G. Hill Jan 2010

Lucayan Beads From San Salvador, Bahamas (Ca. A.D. 900-1500), Jeffrey P. Blick, Richard Kim, Tyler G. Hill

BEADS: Journal of the Society of Bead Researchers

A variety of Lucayan shell, stone, and coral beads as well as beadmaking waste was recovered from several sites on San Salvador, Bahamas. Following detailed analysis, comparisons to other beadmaking sites in the Greater Caribbean region indicate that fabrication, material, color preference, and even general forms are similar across great distances from the Maya region to the Greater and Lesser Antilles and the Bahamian Archipelago. In some cases, beads appear to have been made at the household level (Middle Pre-Classic Maya, Post Saladoid Lucayans), although certain stratified societies (later Maya, Classic Taíno) seem to have exerted more control or monopoly …

Women In The Academy: Reflections On Best Practices For Survival And Success, Nancy Cantor Jan 2010

Women In The Academy: Reflections On Best Practices For Survival And Success, Nancy Cantor

Chancellor's Collection

As we think about best practices for promoting the lives and careers of women in the academy, we should note that a revolution is underway in American society that shows no sign of reversing itself in the long term. For the first time in history, women are half of all U.S. workers. This is a social transformation that affects every aspect of our lives. And it is certainly affecting the landscape of the academy. Women are the majority. We earn 60 percent of the college degrees awarded each year and half of the PhDs and professional degrees. In the past …

Growth Patterns Of Shoal Grass Halodule Wrightii And Manatee Grass Syringodium Filiforme In The Western Gulf Of Mexico, Melissa A. Gutierrez, Annette A. Cardona, Delbert L. Smee Jan 2010

Growth Patterns Of Shoal Grass Halodule Wrightii And Manatee Grass Syringodium Filiforme In The Western Gulf Of Mexico, Melissa A. Gutierrez, Annette A. Cardona, Delbert L. Smee

Gulf and Caribbean Research

Although manatee grass is becoming increasingly abundant in Texas bays, its growth characteristics have not been measured in the western GOM. Changes in seagrass species composition can have significant community effects (Micheli et al. 2008), but the effects of a transition from shoal to manatee grass in the LM have not been extensively studied (but see Tolan et al. 1997). The goals of our study were to measure growth patterns of these two seagrass species in two locations in the western GOM that vary in salinity, epiphyte loads, and nutrient inputs.
