Semantics Centric Solutions For Application And Data Portability In Cloud Computing, Ajith Harshana Ranabahu, Amit P. Sheth
Kno.e.sis Publications
Cloud computing has become one of the key considerations both in academia and industry. Cheap, seemingly unlimited computing resources that can be allocated almost instantaneously and pay-as-you-go pricing schemes are some of the reasons for the success of Cloud computing. The Cloud computing landscape, however, is plagued by many issues hindering adoption. One such issue is vendor lock-in, forcing the Cloud users to adhere to one service provider in terms of data and application logic. Semantic Web has been an important research area that has seen significant attention from both academic and industrial researchers. One key property of Semantic Web …

Hiv/Aids-Related Human Security Risks For Young Women In Rural Uganda, Shelley Jones
Hiv/Aids-Related Human Security Risks For Young Women In Rural Uganda, Shelley Jones
Institute for Educational Development, East Africa
Structural inequities, violence and oppression render young women in rural Uganda highly vulnerable to HIV/AIDS. Their decision-making powers, control over their bodies and sexuality, and access to sexual health resources are critically limited or wholly absent. Yet, prevailing HIV/AIDS programming, notably the President's Emergency Program for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR), emphasizes individual behaviour change to combat HIV/AIDS at the expense of wider societal considerations. This study explores the life experiences of a group of young Ugandan women and argues that the political and ideological battle of ownership (national as well as global) over the HIV/AIDS prevention discourse not only disregards these …
On The Origin Of Species Through Heteropatric Differentiation: A Review And A Model Of Speciation In Migratory Animals, Kevin Winker
On The Origin Of Species Through Heteropatric Differentiation: A Review And A Model Of Speciation In Migratory Animals, Kevin Winker
Ornithological Monographs
Differentiation and speciation without extended isolation appear to be common among migratory animals. Historical oversight of this is probably due to temporal distortion in distribution maps and a tendency to consider that lineages had different historical traits, such as being sedentary or much less mobile. Mobility among cyclic migrants makes population isolation difficult, and diminished levels of intraspecific differentiation occur in avian migrants (I term this "Montgomery's rule"). Nevertheless, many lineages have differentiated despite increased mobility and a high propensity for gene flow, conditions that speciation theory has not addressed adequately. Populations of seasonal migrants usually occur in allopatry and …
Thomas R. Howell's Check-List Of The Birds Of Nicaragua As Of 1993, Thomas R. Howell
Thomas R. Howell's Check-List Of The Birds Of Nicaragua As Of 1993, Thomas R. Howell
Ornithological Monographs
Between December 1951 and April 1967, Thomas R. Howell made 13 separate research trips to Nicaragua. The result was a collection of over 2,000 bird skins and at least 16 publications that form the backbone of Nicaraguan ornithology. In the late 1970s, Howell began working on a manuscript that was intended to be his major contribution to the ornithology of the country. The first version of this "Check-list of the Birds of Nicaragua" was not ready until 1983, and many different typewritten versions circulated among a small but growing number of Nicaraguan biologists for the next two decades. Partly because …

Subspecific Status And Population Genetic Structure Of Least Terns (Sternula Antillarum) Inferred By Mitochondrial Dna Control-Region Sequences And Microsatellite Dna, Hope M. Draheim, Mark P. Miller, Patricia Baird, Susan M. Haig
Subspecific Status And Population Genetic Structure Of Least Terns (Sternula Antillarum) Inferred By Mitochondrial Dna Control-Region Sequences And Microsatellite Dna, Hope M. Draheim, Mark P. Miller, Patricia Baird, Susan M. Haig
United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications
The taxonomic identity of endangered populations of the Least Tern (Sternula antillarum) has long been debated. Their current conservation status provides even more impetus to examine the taxonomic distinctness of these groups. We used rapidly evolving mitochondrial DNA control-region sequences (840 base pairs; n = 188) and microsatellite DNA data (7 loci; n = 417) to examine genetic structure within and among three subspecies that occur within the United States: California Least Tern (S. a. browni), Interior Least Tern (S. a. athalassos), and Eastern Least Tern (S. a. antillarum). Although significant genetic …
Two New Species Of Shrews (Soricidae) From The Western Highlands Of Guatemala, Neal Woodman
Two New Species Of Shrews (Soricidae) From The Western Highlands Of Guatemala, Neal Woodman
United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications
The broad-clawed shrews (Soricomorpha: Soricidae: Cryptotis) encompass a clade of 5 species—Cryptotis alticolus (Merriam), C. goldmani (Merriam), C. goodwini Jackson, C. griseoventris Jackson, and C. peregrinus (Merriam)—that is known collectively as the Cryptotis goldmani group and is characterized by broadened forefeet, elongated and broadened fore claws, and broadened humeri. These shrews are distributed in highland regions from central Mexico to Honduras. Two broad-clawed shrews, C. goodwini and C. griseoventris, occur in southern Mexico and Guatemala and are presumed sister species whose primary distinguishing feature is the larger size of C. goodwini. In an investigation of variation …
Legal Forms And The Common Law Of Patents, Craig Allen Nard
Legal Forms And The Common Law Of Patents, Craig Allen Nard
Faculty Publications
The question of institutional choice is important in all areas of the law, but particularly in the context of patent law with its divergent stakeholders, decentralized variance among industries regarding how the patent system is viewed and relied upon, and a persistent focus on reform in recent years. For over two hundred years, the courts have been the dominant force in the development of patent law. It should therefore come as no surprise to learn that a significant portion of American patent law, including some of the most important and controversial patent law doctrines, is either built upon judicial interpretation …
A Species-Conserving Genetic Algorithm For Multimodal Optimization, Michael Scott Brown
A Species-Conserving Genetic Algorithm For Multimodal Optimization, Michael Scott Brown
CCAC Theses and Dissertations
The problem of multimodal functional optimization has been addressed by much research producing many different search techniques. Niche Genetic Algorithms is one area that has attempted to solve this problem. Many Niche Genetic Algorithms use some type of radius. When multiple optima occur within the radius, these algorithms have a difficult time locating them. Problems that have arbitrarily close optima create a greater problem. This paper presents a new Niche Genetic Algorithm framework called Dynamic-radius Species-conserving Genetic Algorithm. This new framework extends existing Genetic Algorithm research.
This new framework enhances an existing Niche Genetic Algorithm in two ways. As the …

Regeneration Response And Seedling Bank Dynamics On A Dendroctonus Rufipennis-Killed Picea Engelmannii Landscape, R. Justin Derose, James N. Long
Aspen Bibliography
Question: How does regeneration response to a host- specific, high-severity, infrequent Dendroctonus rufipennis outbreak differ from our conceptualization of high-severity, infrequent/low-severity, frequent disturbance regimes in Picea engelmannii - Abies lasiocarpa communities? Location: Southern Utah, USA. Methods: One hundred and seven plots across a high- elevation P. engelmannii forest were sampled to re- construct pre-outbreak overstory and seedling bank densities, and calculate their associated metrics of diversity. Decade of establishment by seedling bank trees indicated ‘‘chronic’’ and ‘‘pulse’’ regenerators. Results: The post-outbreak overstory and seedling bank were dominated by A. lasiocarpa. Although Pinus flexilis, Pinus ponderosa, Picea pungens, and Psuedotsuga menziesii …

Propagating Trembling Aspen From Root Cuttings: Impact Of Storage Length And Phenological Period Of Root Donor Plants, Jessica Snedden, Simon M. Landhausser, Victor J. Lieffers, Lee R. Charleson
Aspen Bibliography
Two experiments were conducted to examine the effects of growing conditions, duration of cold storage, and distinct phenological periods of root donor plants on the propagation success of aspen rootlings. Root donor plants were produced either under greenhouse or open grown conditions. Root cuttings were periodically collected from donor plants that had been stored for various lengths of time in cold storage (up to 180 days), or that were stored dormant in cold storage (up to 150 days) and then grown for another full growing season. Longer storage of donor plants produced only slightly smaller rootlings and resulted in slightly …

Hypertension In Autosomal Dominant Polycystic Kidney Disease: A Clinical And Basic Science Perspective, Shobha Ratnam, Surya M. Nauli
Pharmacy Faculty Articles and Research
Cardiovascular complications are major causes of morbidity and mortality in patients with autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD). In particular, hypertension is insidious and remains a continuous problem that evolves during the course of the disease. Hypertension in ADPKD has been associated with abnormality in the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system (RAAS). Early vascular changes have also been reported in young ADPKD patients. In addition, the cellular functions of mechanosensory cilia within vascular system have emerged recently. The basic and clinical perspectives of RAAS, vascular remodeling and sensory cilia are reviewed with regard to hypertension in ADPKD

Development And Psychometric Validation Of The Dementia Attitudes Scale, Melissa L. O'Connor, Susan H. Mcfadden
Aging Studies Faculty Publications
This study employed qualitative construct mapping and factor analysis to construct a scale to measure attitudes toward dementia. Five family caregivers, five professionals, and five college students participated in structured interviews. Qualitative analysis of the interviews led to a 46-item scale, which was reduced to 20 items following principal axis factoring with two different samples: college students () and certified nursing assistant students (). Confirmatory factor analysis was then conducted with another sample of college students (). The final scale, titled the Dementia Attitudes Scale (DAS), essentially had a two-factor structure; the factors were labeled “dementia knowledge” and “social comfort.” …

Biointeraction Analysis By High-Performance Affinity Chromatography: Kinetic Studies Of Immobilized Antibodies, Mary Anne Nelson, Annette C. Moser, David S. Hage
David Hage Publications
A system based on high-performance affinity chromatography was developed for characterizing the binding, elution and regeneration kinetics of immobilized antibodies and immunoaffinity supports. This information was provided by using a combination of frontal analysis, split-peak analysis and peak decay analysis to determine the rate constants for antibody–antigen interactions under typical sample application and elution conditions. This technique was tested using immunoaffinity supports that contained monoclonal antibodies for 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D). Association equilibrium constants measured by frontal analysis for 2,4-D and related compounds with the immobilized antibodies were 1.7–12 × 106 M−1 at pH 7.0 and 25 °C. Splitpeak …
