Two Novel Approaches Used To Produce Biodiesel From Low-Cost Feedstocks, Xiaohu Fan, Xi Wang, Feng Chen Jan 2010

Two Novel Approaches Used To Produce Biodiesel From Low-Cost Feedstocks, Xiaohu Fan, Xi Wang, Feng Chen

Publications

The price of feedstock is one of the most significant factors affecting the economic viability of biodiesel manufacturer. Many approaches were investigated to reduce the biodiesel production cost. The present work gave a preliminary study of two approaches to economically produce biodiesel from waste cooking oil (WCO) and flaked cottonseed. One was the use of ultrasound-assisted synthesis of biodiesel from WCO. The other was the application of in situ transesterification from flaked cottonseed. Gas chromatography (GC) and High performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) results demonstrated the feasibility of using both approaches to produce biodiesel from low-cost feedstock.

A Comparative Identification Of Ochratoxin A In Longan Fruit Pulp By High Performance Liquid Chromatography-Fluorescence Detection And Electron Spray Ionization-Mass Spectrometry, Jing Li, Haihui Xie, Bao Yang, Xinhong Dong, Linyan Feng, Feng Chen, Yueming Jiang

Publications

Harvested longan (Dimocarpus longan Lour.) fruit are susceptible to decay caused by both bacterial and fungal infections. Ochratoxin A (OTA) is a kind of mycotoxin produced by a number of fungi. In this study, OTA was extracted from longan fruit pulp by 80% methanol and then loaded on C-18 solid-phase extraction columns. The extract solution was then analyzed by high-performance liquid chromatography - fluorescence detection (HPLC-FD) and an electron spray ionization-mass spectrometry (ESI-MS), respectively. The HPLC-FD analysis showed that a compound similar to OTA might exist in longan fruit pulp, but further analysis by the ESI-MS method demonstrated that …

Status And Prospects For The Wisconsin Dairy Goat Sector, Douglas B. Jackson-Smith Jan 2010

Status And Prospects For The Wisconsin Dairy Goat Sector, Douglas B. Jackson-Smith

Sociology, Social Work and Anthropology Faculty Publications

The Wisconsin dairy goat industry is a diverse, vibrant and robust sector that has grown rapidly over the last decade. Goat milk output has increased several-fold in the last ten years, and retail markets for goat cheese appear to be increasing at double-digit annual rates. The most recent data shows just over 200 licensed farms in Wisconsin in 2009. According to 2006 numbers, Wisconsin dairy goat farms were milking an average of 118 does that produced 1,416 lbs. On average, Wisconsin dairy goat farms were both larger and more productive on a per animal basis than farms in any other …

Examining The Compatibility Between Forestry Incentive Programs In The Us And The Practice Of Sustainable Forest Management, Steven E. Daniels, Michael A. Kilgore, Michael G. Jacobsen, John L. Greene, Thomas J. Straka Jan 2010

Examining The Compatibility Between Forestry Incentive Programs In The Us And The Practice Of Sustainable Forest Management, Steven E. Daniels, Michael A. Kilgore, Michael G. Jacobsen, John L. Greene, Thomas J. Straka

Sociology, Social Work and Anthropology Faculty Publications

This research explores the intersection between the various federal and state forestry incentive programs and the adoption of sustainable forestry practices on non-industrial private forest (NIPF) lands in the US. The qualitative research reported here draws upon a series of eight focus groups of NIPF landowners (two each in Minnesota, Oregon, Pennsylvania, and South Carolina). Despite minor regional variations, the dominant theme that emerged is that these landowners’ purchase and management decisions are motivated by the “trilogy” of forest continuity, benefit to the owner, and doing the “right thing.” This trilogy is quite consistent with notions of sustainable forestry, but …

Treefrog (Hyla Squirella) Responses To Rangeland And Management In Semi-Tropical Florida, Usa, Kathryn Windes Jan 2010

Treefrog (Hyla Squirella) Responses To Rangeland And Management In Semi-Tropical Florida, Usa, Kathryn Windes

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

As urban areas expand, agricultural lands become increasingly important habitat for many species. Compared to some types of agricultural land-use, ranchlands provide vast expanses of minimally modified habitat that support many threatened and endangered species. Conservation biologists can promote ecologically sound management approaches by quantifying the effects of agricultural practices on resident species. I examined the effects of pasture management, cattle grazing, and landscape characteristics on both adult and larval treefrogs in a ranchland in south-central Florida. I experimentally determined optimal deployment of artificial treefrog shelters constructed of polyvinylchloride (PVC) pipe to efficiently sample adult treefrogs (Chapter 1). Seventy-two shelters …

Latitudinal Variation In Seasonal Activity And Mortality In Ratsnakes (Elaphe Obsoleta), Jinelle H. Sperry, Gabriel Blouin-Demers, Gerardo L.F. Carfagno, Patrick J. Weatherhead Jan 2010

Latitudinal Variation In Seasonal Activity And Mortality In Ratsnakes (Elaphe Obsoleta), Jinelle H. Sperry, Gabriel Blouin-Demers, Gerardo L.F. Carfagno, Patrick J. Weatherhead

Biology Faculty Publications

The ecology of ectotherms should be particularly affected by latitude because so much of their biology is temperature dependent. Current latitudinal patterns should also be informative about how ectotherms will have to modify their behavior in response to climate change. We used data from a total of 175 adult black ratsnakes (Elaphe obsoleta) radio tracked in Ontario, Illinois, and Texas, a latitudinal distance of > 1500 km, to test predictions about how seasonal patterns of activity and mortality should vary with latitude. Despite pronounced differences in temperatures among study locations, and despite ratsnakes in Texas not hibernating and switching from diurnal …

Joining The Convention On Biological Diversity, William Snape Jan 2010

Joining The Convention On Biological Diversity, William Snape

PEEL Faculty Scholarship

Life on Earth as we know it is under siege. Significant and probably irreversible changes to the natural world are now occurring. It is an undisputed fact that we are losing wild species in nature to extinction faster than in any geologic period since the dinosaur die-off roughly sixty five million years ago. It is also undisputed that ecosystem services from land, water, and air are degraded throughout the world and threatening food supplies, economic development, scientific advancements, and global security. The rapid advent of global warming and associated climate change makes the job of saving native plants, animals, and …

Split-Season Herbaceous Weed Control For Full-Season Seedling Performance, Jimmie L. Yeiser, Andrew W. Ezell Jan 2010

Split-Season Herbaceous Weed Control For Full-Season Seedling Performance, Jimmie L. Yeiser, Andrew W. Ezell

Faculty Publications

Results from four loblolly pine (Pinus taeda L.) sites, one in each of MS and TX in 2001 and again in 2002, are presented. Twelve herbicide treatments and an untreated check were tested. Herbicide treatments were applied early (mid- March), late (mid-May), both timings, or not at all to achieve, early- late-, full-season, or no weed control. When averaged across all four sites and compared to the early treatment, bare ground was less from April through July and April through November on late treated and untreated plots, respectively. Full-season weed control provided numerically more bare ground than other treatments. When …

White-Tailed Deer Antler Research: A Response To Demarais And Strickland, Ben Koerth, James Kroll Jan 2010

White-Tailed Deer Antler Research: A Response To Demarais And Strickland, Ben Koerth, James Kroll

Faculty Publications

Demarais and Strickland presented several questions about the scope and validity of conclusions regarding predictability of mature antler size based on yearling antler size and produced a simulation model reported to demonstrate measurement bias in our 2008 study. We believe our conclusions were appropriate with our research hypothesis and demonstrated the assumed differential selection bias by hunters used in Demarais and Strickland was unwarranted. Demarais and Strickland provided no metadata to document the provenance of data used in their model and did not account for location, year, cohort, nutrition of research animals, or loss of individuals from their sample population …

Understory Vegetative Diversity Of Post-Thinned Pine Plantations Treated With Fertilizer, Fire And Herbicide In East Texas, Brian P. Oswald, Dean W. Coble, R R. Botting, Ken W. Farrish, James E. Van Kley

Faculty Publications

This study assessed biodiversity in the understory of two pine plantations where different management tools (fertilizer, prescribed burning, and herbicide application) were utilized. During three growing seasons, species, percent cover, and number of individuals, and physical characteristics were recorded. Responses to treatment were examined based on comparison of species richness, evenness, diversity, and importance. Two years after treatment, fertilized plots showed a decline in species richness, evenness, and diversity. Prescribed burning and herbicide treatments increased species richness but decreased species evenness, resulting in no change in diversity index. Herbicide treatment reduced the importance of dominant shrubs and increased the importance …

Parental Leadership: The Mary Poppins Metaphor, Brad Van Alstyne Jan 2010

Parental Leadership: The Mary Poppins Metaphor, Brad Van Alstyne

Collected Faculty Scholarship

Existing theories on leadership are usually based on efforts we are familiar with in which leaders are easily defined (work, war, sports, etc). Little analysis to date has been placed on the role of parents as leaders outside of the social sciences where the focus of the research is usually an offshoot of psychology or childhood development. The parent as leader is a unique focus in that there are several qualities of the parent role that are quite different from that of the typical supervisory roles we normally discuss, while at the same time it would be foolish to think …

MicroRNAs (miRNAs) mirl 5a and let7a are iMportant regulators of bcl-2, ras and c-myc proteins Considering that these miRNAs are commonly altered in many human cancers and that these proteins are reported to be altered in oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC), we investigated them in a set of OSCC cases 'I he miRNAs as well as the proteins were evaluated in the tumor and blood of 20 patients by real-time quantitative PCR and iMmunohistochemistry, respectively The expression of nfirl5a and bcl-2 proteins in the tumors was not associated with each other or with tumor staging On the other hand, we …

Glucagon-Like Peptide-1 Receptor Gene Polymorphism (Leu260phe) Is Associated With Morning Cortisol In Preschoolers, Haroon I. Sheikh, Lea R. Dougherty, Elizabeth P. Hayden, Daniel N. Klein, Shiva M. Singh Jan 2010

Glucagon-Like Peptide-1 Receptor Gene Polymorphism (Leu260phe) Is Associated With Morning Cortisol In Preschoolers, Haroon I. Sheikh, Lea R. Dougherty, Elizabeth P. Hayden, Daniel N. Klein, Shiva M. Singh

Paediatrics Publications

Glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) has been shown to be a potent stress-regulating neuropeptide in animal models, but little is known about whether genetic polymorphisms that influence this peptide influence stress responses in humans. We therefore explored whether a missense mutation (rs1042044) in the GLP-1 receptor was associated with morning and evening salivary cortisol levels in preschool aged children. Morning and evening saliva samples and individual buccal swabs for DNA extraction were collected from seventy-seven preschool aged children. Salivary cortisol was assayed using a time-resolved fluorescence immunoassay with fluorometric end-point detection (DELFIA), and the rs1042044 single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) was genotyped using …

Nip/Duoxa Is Essential For Drosophila Embryonic Development And Regulates Oxidative Stress Response., Xiaojun Xie, Jack Hu, Xiping Liu, Hanjuan Qin, Anthony Percival-Smith, Yong Rao, Shawn S C Li

Biochemistry Publications

NIP/DuoxA, originally cloned as a protein capable of binding to the cell fate determinant Numb in Drosophila, was recently identified as a modulator of reactive oxygen species (ROS) production in mammalian systems. Despite biochemical and cellular studies that link NIP/DuoxA to the generation of ROS through the dual oxidase (Duox) enzyme, the in vivo function of NIP/DuoxA has not been characterized to date. Here we report a genetic and functional characterization of nip in Drosophila melanogaster. We show that nip is essential for Drosophila development as nip null mutants die at the 1(st) larval instar. Expression of UAS-nip, but not …

A Scale-Dependent Examination Of Stopover Decisions In Migratory Passerines At Long Point, Ontario, Stuart Alexander Mackenzie Jan 2010

A Scale-Dependent Examination Of Stopover Decisions In Migratory Passerines At Long Point, Ontario, Stuart Alexander Mackenzie

Digitized Theses

Stopovers, periods o f rest and refuelling between migratory flights, play an integral role in determining fitness o f migrating passerines. Migration success is dependent on decisions made about when to arrive and leave particular stopover sites and how to utilize regional landscapes. I used mark-recapture analysis o f bird banding data from a stopover site and direct measurements from radio telemetry data covering a stopover landscape of~20 x 40 km at Long Point, Ontario, to examine stopover decisions. Specifically, I estimated probabilities that individuals would leave a site in relation to age, fat stores, season, and the extent to …

A Microarray Study On Gene Expression Of Drosophila Melanogaster 'M Response To Multiple Cold Exposures, Jian Zhang Jan 2010

A Microarray Study On Gene Expression Of Drosophila Melanogaster 'M Response To Multiple Cold Exposures, Jian Zhang

Digitized Theses

In the field, insects suffer multiple cold exposures during winter. When exposed to repeated low temperatures, Drosophila melanogaster females show an increase in survival, but a reduction in reproduction. In this study, microarrays were used to analyze the gene expression of female D. melanogaster after multiple, single sustained (or single prolonged) and single short cold treatments, which exposed the flies at 0 °C for repeated 2 h, single 10 h and single 2 h respectively. Candidate genes involved in the 6 h recovery from different types of cold exposures were identified. After repeated cold exposures, candidate genes particularly included those …
