Population Status Of The Southern Cavefish, Typhlichthys Subterraneus In Arkansas, A. Romero, M. S. Connor, G. L. Vaughan

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

We summarize the results of our study on the status of the southern cavefish (Typhlichthys subterraneus) in Arkansas. Its presence in the state represents the western-southern limits of its distribution. Four localities have been confirmed that contain individuals of this species: Richardson Cave (Fulton County), Alexander Cave/Clark Spring (Stone County), Ennis Cave (Stone County), and Lake Norfork (Baxter County). A fifth locality has been cited as a well in Randolph County, but because the exact location is unknown, its presence has not been confirmed. A number of unconfirmed localities for “cavefishes” in the region has not been included in this …

Transforming Growth Factor-Beta (Tgfβ)-Mediated Post-Transcriptional Regulation Of Epithelial-Mesenchymal Transdifferentiation (Emt), Arindam Chaudhury Jan 2010

Transforming Growth Factor-Beta (Tgfβ)-Mediated Post-Transcriptional Regulation Of Epithelial-Mesenchymal Transdifferentiation (Emt), Arindam Chaudhury

ETD Archive

TGF├ƒ induces epithelial-mesenchymal transdifferentiation (EMT) accompanied by cellular differentiation and migration, a process fundamental during embryonic development and one that is reactivated in a variety of diseases including fibrosis and cancer. Despite extensive transcriptomic profiling, identification of TGF├ƒ-inducible, EMT-specific genes has met with limited success. Here, we report a novel post-transcriptional pathway by which TGF├ƒ modulates expression of EMT-specific proteins and EMT itself. We show that heterogeneous nuclear ribonucleoprotein E1 (hnRNP E1) binds a structural, 33 nucleotides (nt) TGF-beta-activated translation (BAT) element in the 3'-untranslated regions (UTRs) of disabled-2 (Dab2) and interleukin-like EMT inducer (ILEI) transcripts, and repress their translation. …

Studies On The Nymphal Aggregation Pheromone Of Malagasy Migratory Locust, Locusta Migratoria Capito (Saussure, 1884) And Its Effects On Adult Maturation., Victor Razafindranaivo

All PhD Dissertations

The Malagasy migratory locust, Locusta migratoria capito (Saussure, 1884), is the most destructive pest in the Malagasy agricultural production system. The recent plague between 1996 and 2000 during which economic losses amounting to ca. US$ 50 million mainly in rice fields, were recorded, is an indication that, the locust menaces is far from being resolved in Madagascar. Control operations against locusts have focused entirely on large-scale application of synthetic chemical insecticides. Given that Madagascar has a unique and rich biodiversity; such spraying has negative effects on the environment and non-target beneficiary organisms.Recent research on the desert locust, Schistocerca gregaria (Forskäl) …

Locusta migratoria capito is the major agricultural pest to cereal production inMadagascar. Unlike other members of this species (e.g. L. migratoria migratorioides and L. migratoria manilensis), hardly any study has been done on its chemical ecology. This project sought to characterize the aggregation pheromone of the adult L. m. capito and to assess the role of its components on the behaviour of conspecifics under laboratory conditions. To assess responses of adult locusts to their own volatiles, bioassays were conducted in a single chamber olfactometer that allowed for dual-choice between air, enriched with volatiles vs. clean air. To identify the composition …

Biological Performance, Response And Population Dynamics Of Tetranychus Evansi (Acari: Tetranychidae), As Influenced By Different African Nightshade (Solanales: Solanaceae) Species, Lucy Kananu Murungi

All PhD Dissertations

Despite the vast research on trichome-based resistance as well as plant chemical factors in plant-herbivore interactions in Solanaceous plants, little or no information is available on the association between Tetranychus evansi Baker and Pritchard and these mechanisms in African nightshades. The current study which was carried out from December, 2006 to March, 2009 focused on five African nightshade species viz. Solanum sarrachoides Sendter, S. villosum Mill, S. tarderemotum Bitter, S. americanum Mill and S. scabrum Mill that were evaluated for their resistance to T evansi. The objective was to investigate several host plant characteristics of the five Solanum spp and …

Potential Of Integrating Calpurnia Aurea With Entomopathogenic Fungus Jlfetarhizium Anisopliae For The Control Of Rhipicephalus Appendiculatus And Rhipicephalus Pulchellus, Paulin Nana Jan 2010

Potential Of Integrating Calpurnia Aurea With Entomopathogenic Fungus Jlfetarhizium Anisopliae For The Control Of Rhipicephalus Appendiculatus And Rhipicephalus Pulchellus, Paulin Nana

All PhD Dissertations

Ticks of the genus Rhipicephalus are important parasites of livestock in the world. Rhipicephalus ticks cause huge economic losses to cattle and have a great capacity to develop resistance to chemical acaricides. There is the need therefore to develop alternative strategies that could complement the existing control methods of this ectoparasite. Entomopathogenic fungi are being considered as a promising option for the control of ticks on-host and off-host. The aim of this study was to assess the potential of using extracts from Calpurnia aurea as attractant in association with Metarhizium anisopliae for the control of Rhipicephalus spp. as an affordable …

As the world’s largest importer of marine ornamental species for the aquaria, curio, home décor, and jewelry industries, the United States has an opportunity to leverage its considerable market power to promote more sustainable trade and reduce the effects of ornamental trade stress on coral reefs worldwide. Evidence indicates that collection of some coral reef animals for these trades has caused virtual elimination of local populations, major changes in age structure, and promotion of collection practices that destroy reef habitats. Management and enforcement of collection activities in major source countries such as Indonesia and the Philippines remain weak. Strengthening US …

Has Behavioral Science Tumbled Through The Biological Looking Glass? Will Brief, Evidence-Based Training Return It From The Rabbit Hole?, Donna M. Midkiff, W. Joseph Wyatt

Psychology Faculty Research

Time constraints and professional demands leave practicing professionals unlikely to enroll in extended training such as a semester-long graduate course. Thus, the three-hour continuing education format has become a standard for those in practice. One may ask what sorts of training strategies optimize that format. To explore that, a three hour training program for seventy-six practicing mental health professionals, most of whom self-identified as psychologists, was devised. It made use of primarily antecedent techniques that have been shown to bring about changed perceptions on a number of topics. Content focused on two areas of importance to behavior analysts, the culture’s …

Biochemistry and Microbiology

The global increase in the incidence of obesity has emerged as one of the most serious public health risks in recent years. Despite the enormity of the obesity pandemic, there are currently only two FDA-approved therapies for its treatment and these drugs exhibit modest effi cacy and have limiting side effects. Prieurianin is a plant limonoid product that deters feeding in insect larvae. We investigated in this study the effects of prieurianin on weight loss and adipogenesis. Our results showed that prieurianin causes weight loss by reducing energy intake in obese mice on highcalorie diet. We also found that prieurianin …

Gender Identity Disorder Controversies : Male To Female Transgender/Sexual Focuses, Tuyet Noriega Jan 2010

Gender Identity Disorder Controversies : Male To Female Transgender/Sexual Focuses, Tuyet Noriega

Graduate Research Papers

This literature review discusses Gender Identity disorder disputes and influences from research. Choosing a sex (male or female) is not something people consciously decide. However, there are individuals who do need to decide a sex that is not his or her chosen identity. When an individual chooses to dress as the opposite sex this creates discussion of nature versus nurture, and other dilemmas experienced by society and GID individuals. Most transgender individuals seek some form of medical or mental assistance; therefore, it is necessary for mental health counselors, doctors, and social workers to be aware of Gender Identity Disorder indicators. …

Sport Participation Influences Perceptions Of Mate Characteristics, Albrecht I. Schulte-Hostedde, Mark A. Eys, Michael Emond, Michael Buzdon Jan 2010

Sport Participation Influences Perceptions Of Mate Characteristics, Albrecht I. Schulte-Hostedde, Mark A. Eys, Michael Emond, Michael Buzdon

Kinesiology and Physical Education Faculty Publications

Sport provides a context in which mate choice can be facilitated by the display of athletic prowess. Previous work has shown that, for females, team sport athletes are more desirable as mates than individual sport athletes and non-participants. In the present study, the perceptions of males and females were examined regarding potential mates base on sport participation. It was predicted that team sport athletes would be more positively perceived than individual sport athletes and non-participants by both males and females. A questionnaire, a photograph, and manipulated descriptions were used to gauge perceptual differences with respect to team sport athletes, individual …

Remapping The European Cultural Memory: The Case Of Julia Kristeva’S Murder In Byzantium, Bianca Laura Rus Jan 2010

Remapping The European Cultural Memory: The Case Of Julia Kristeva’S Murder In Byzantium, Bianca Laura Rus

Women and Gender Studies Faculty Publications

This article considers Julia Kristeva’s novel Murder in Byzantium in the context of some of the most pressing ehtical and political dilemmas faced by Europe today, regarding the role of religion and the inclusion of religious references in the Constitution of the European Union. It traces Kristeva’s remapping of the European tradition, and places feminine creativity at the core of her analysis. I argue that this remapping that revalorizes feminine creativity and sensibility envisions the question of the eternal Europe as an illusion to be endlessly reinvented.

To The Oceanographic Community, George Veronis

Journal of Marine Research

I became Editor of the Journal of Marine Research in January of 1973 and resigned with the November, 2009 issue; although, in fact, Ken Brink essentially took over the task during the summer of 2009, when I ended up in the hospital for a period of six-months. As of this issue (Volume 68, Number 1), Ken becomes the official Editor.

The Relation Between The Duration And Shape Of Internal Wave Groups, S. A. Thorpe Jan 2010

The Relation Between The Duration And Shape Of Internal Wave Groups, S. A. Thorpe

Journal of Marine Research

This paper discusses the effect of the shape of internal wave groups on their “duration” or “lifetime”—how long they retain their form before their component waves disperse. The methodology devised by Smith and Brulefert (2010) to study the dispersion of surface wave groups is extended to examine the dispersion of internal wave groups. To provide tangible examples, it is supposed that wave groups of ellipsoidal shape, symmetrical about a vertical plane, are generated in a uniformly stratified thermocline by moving periodic disturbances perturbing the base of an overlying mixed layer. The dispersion relation for internal waves is used to determine …

Topographic Rectification In A Forced, Dissipative, Barotropic Ocean, K. H. Brink Jan 2010

Topographic Rectification In A Forced, Dissipative, Barotropic Ocean, K. H. Brink

Journal of Marine Research

Barotropic current rectification by topographic irregularities is treated for a case with bottom friction and fluctuating forcing. Geometries both with underlying shelf-slope topography and with no mean topographic slope are considered. In common with many previous studies of this sort, the resulting time-mean flow roughly follows isobaths in the direction that long topographic Rossby waves travel, but the mean flow often deviates locally from this rule. Further, as might be expected, there is an area-averaged correlation of pressure and bottom slope in the sense that would propel the mean flow. If the topographic irregularities have a length scale shorter than …

Mixing Rates Across The Gulf Stream, Part 1: On The Formation Of Eighteen Degree Water, R. Inoue, M. C. Gregg, R. R. Harcourt Jan 2010

Mixing Rates Across The Gulf Stream, Part 1: On The Formation Of Eighteen Degree Water, R. Inoue, M. C. Gregg, R. R. Harcourt

Journal of Marine Research

Microstructure profiles taken in February 2007 across the Gulf Stream (GS) measured the temporal and spatial variability of the intense mixing that forms Eighteen Degree Water (EDW). Strong winds, gusting to 30 m s–1, and heat fluxes up to 1000 W m–2 produced moderate-to-strong mixing in the surface mixed layer and the entrainment zone, as well as in the thermocline. In the limit of a vertically balanced heat budget, EDW formation is driven primarily by surface heat loss to the atmosphere across a region extending O(100) km south from the GS core, where entrainment heat fluxes …

Drifters In The Gulf Stream, G. G. Mcgrath, T. Rossby, J. T. Merrill Jan 2010

Drifters In The Gulf Stream, G. G. Mcgrath, T. Rossby, J. T. Merrill

Journal of Marine Research

In the past, the Gulf Stream has frequently been viewed as essentially a barrier between the Slope and Sargasso seas. On the other hand, surface drifters have often been observed to leave the stream to the south. To gain a better understanding of surface flow of the Gulf Stream, we used drifter trajectory data to study their drift east and patterns of loss from the current. Two sets of drifter data were used, one from the 1995–1999 Georges Bank GLOBEC program and the other from the Global Drifter Program. We also made use of atmospheric wind stress estimates from a …

From Centennial To Millennial Oscillation Of The Thermohaline Circulation, Florian Sévellec, Thierry Huck, Alain Colin De Verdière Jan 2010

From Centennial To Millennial Oscillation Of The Thermohaline Circulation, Florian Sévellec, Thierry Huck, Alain Colin De Verdière

Journal of Marine Research

The freshwater flux intensity is used as the main control parameter to destabilize the ThermoHaline Circulation (THC): as it increases, the classical bifurcation scenario, thermal stable steady state, millennial oscillation and haline stable steady state are reproduced in a 2D zonally-averaged ocean model under mixed boundary conditions. Both bifurcations arise through global bifurcations leading to an infinite period of the limit cycle. Here we highlight a centennial oscillation important for the instability of the thermal phase of the millennial oscillation and which could be considered as a precursor to the collapse of the THC. It is suggested that the existence …

Localization Of Phosphatidylinositol (3,4,5)-Trisphosphate To Phagosomes In Entamoeba Histolytica Achieved Using Glutathione S-Transferase- And Green Fluorescent Protein-Tagged Lipid Biosensors, Yevgeniya A. Byekova, Rhonda R. Powell, Brenda H. Welter, Lesly A. Temesvari Jan 2010

Localization Of Phosphatidylinositol (3,4,5)-Trisphosphate To Phagosomes In Entamoeba Histolytica Achieved Using Glutathione S-Transferase- And Green Fluorescent Protein-Tagged Lipid Biosensors, Yevgeniya A. Byekova, Rhonda R. Powell, Brenda H. Welter, Lesly A. Temesvari

Publications

Entamoeba histolytica is an intestinal protozoan parasite that causes amoebic dysentery and liver abscess. Phagocytosis by the parasite is a critical virulence process, since it is a prerequisite for tissue invasion and establishment of chronic infection. While the roles of many of the proteins that regulate phagocytosis-related signaling events in E. histolytica have been characterized, the functions of lipids in this cellular process remain largely unknown in this parasite. In other systems, phosphatidylinositol (3,4,5)-trisphosphate (PIP3), a major product of phosphoinositide 3 kinase (PI3-kinase) activity, is essential for phagocytosis. Pleckstrin homology (PH) domains are protein domains that specifically bind …

Two Novel Approaches Used To Produce Biodiesel From Low-Cost Feedstocks, Xiaohu Fan, Xi Wang, Feng Chen Jan 2010

Two Novel Approaches Used To Produce Biodiesel From Low-Cost Feedstocks, Xiaohu Fan, Xi Wang, Feng Chen

Publications

The price of feedstock is one of the most significant factors affecting the economic viability of biodiesel manufacturer. Many approaches were investigated to reduce the biodiesel production cost. The present work gave a preliminary study of two approaches to economically produce biodiesel from waste cooking oil (WCO) and flaked cottonseed. One was the use of ultrasound-assisted synthesis of biodiesel from WCO. The other was the application of in situ transesterification from flaked cottonseed. Gas chromatography (GC) and High performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) results demonstrated the feasibility of using both approaches to produce biodiesel from low-cost feedstock.
