Judicial Erasure Of Mixed-Race Discrimination, Nancy Leong Feb 2010

Judicial Erasure Of Mixed-Race Discrimination, Nancy Leong

American University Law Review

Jurisprudential remedies for racial discrimination presume the existence of clear categories. Indeed, Carolene Products’ classic allusion to “discrete and insular minorities” evokes racial groups that are readily identified and defined. Yet this reliance on categories renders antidiscrimination jurisprudence inhospitable to claims brought by individuals identified as multiracial and discriminated against on that basis. By addressing racial discrimination exclusively through categories, courts have lost sight of the fact that the purpose of antidiscrimination law is not to protect individuals from discrimination based on membership in recognized categories, but rather to protect individuals from the harms inflicted by racism.

Intracellular Consequences Of Sos1 Deficiency During Salt Stress, Dong Ha Oh, Sang Yeol Lee, Ray A. Bressan, Dae Jin Yun, Hans J. Bohnert

Faculty Publications

A mutation of AtSOS1 (Salt Overly Sensitive 1), a plasma membrane Na +/H+-antiporter in Arabidopsis thaliana, leads to a salt-sensitive phenotype accompanied by the death of root cells under salt stress. Intracellular events and changes in gene expression were compared during a non-lethal salt stress between the wild type and a representative SOS1 mutant, atsos1-1, by confocal microscopy using ion-specific fluorophores and by quantitative RT-PCR. In addition to the higher accumulation of sodium ions, atsos1-1 showed inhibition of endocytosis, abnormalities in vacuolar shape and function, and changes in intracellular pH compared to the wild type in root tip cells under …

A Systems Model Of Vesicle Trafficking In Arabidopsis Pollen Tubes, Naohiro Kato, Hongyu He, Alexander P. Steger Feb 2010

A Systems Model Of Vesicle Trafficking In Arabidopsis Pollen Tubes, Naohiro Kato, Hongyu He, Alexander P. Steger

Faculty Publications

A systems model that describes vesicle trafficking during pollen tube growth in Arabidopsis (Arabidopsis thaliana) was constructed. The model is composed of ordinary differential equations that connect the molecular functions of genes expressed in pollen. The current model requires soluble N-ethylmaleimide-sensitive fusion protein attachment protein receptors (SNAREs) and small GTPases, Arf or Rab, to reasonably predict tube growth as a function of time. Tube growth depends on vesicle trafficking that transports phospholipid and pectin to the tube tip. The vesicle trafficking genes identified by analyzing publicly available transcriptome data comprised 328 genes. Fourteen of them are up-regulated by the gibberellin …

Inefficient Tat-Dependent Export Of Periplasmic Amidases In An Escherichia Coli Strain With Mutations In Two Deda Family Genes, Rakesh Sikdar, William T. Doerrler

Faculty Publications

The DedA family genes are found in most bacterial genomes. Two of these proteins are Escherichia coli YqjA and YghB, predicted inner membrane proteins of unknown function sharing 61% amino acid identity. The E. coli single deletion mutants are largely without phenotype, but the double mutant (BC202; ΔyqjA::Tetr ΔyghB::Kanr) is characterized by incomplete cell division, temperature sensitivity, and altered phospholipid levels (K. Thompkins et al., J. Bacteriol. 190:4489-4500, 2008). In this report, we have better characterized the cell division chaining defect of BC202. Fluorescence recovery after photobleaching indicates that 58% of the cells in chains are compartmentalized by at least …

Biology Faculty Research and Scholarship

Aphids are important agricultural pests and also biological models for studies of insect-plant interactions, symbiosis, virus vectoring, and the developmental causes of extreme phenotypic plasticity. Here we present the 464 Mb draft genome assembly of the pea aphid Acyrthosiphon pisum. This first published whole genome sequence of a basal hemimetabolous insect provides an outgroup to the multiple published genomes of holometabolous insects. Pea aphids are host-plant specialists, they can reproduce both sexually and asexually, and they have coevolved with an obligate bacterial symbiont. Here we highlight findings from whole genome analysis that may be related to these unusual biological …

Biomarkers In Systemic Sclerosis., Susan V. Castro, Sergio A. Jimenez Feb 2010

Biomarkers In Systemic Sclerosis., Susan V. Castro, Sergio A. Jimenez

Scleroderma Center Faculty Papers

Systemic sclerosis is an autoimmune inflammatory disorder of unknown etiologycharacterized b y pronounced fibroproliferative alterations in the microvasculature, and frequent cellular and humoral immunity abnormalities, culminating in a severe and often progressive fibrotic process. Numerous biomarkers reflecting the three main pathogenetic mechanisms in systemic sclerosis have been described; however, aside from several disease-specific autoantibodies, other biomarkers have not been thoroughly validated and require further study. Thus, there is an unmet need for validated biomarkers for diagnosis, disease classification, and evaluation of organ involvement and therapeutic response in systemic sclerosis.

Blinn, Raymond M. Newman, Dickson M. Atuke, Keith Fredricks, Nathaniel A. Hemstad, Eric Merten, Nicholas Schlesser

Nebraska Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit: Staff Publications

Relatively few evaluations of aquatic macroinvertebrate and fish communities have been published in peer-reviewed literature detailing the effect of varying residual basal area (RBA) after timber harvesting in riparian buffers. Our analysis investigated the effects of partial harvesting within riparian buffers on aquatic macroinvertebrate and fish communities in small streams from two experiments in northern Minnesota northern hardwood-aspen forests. Each experiment evaluated partial harvesting within riparian buffers. In both experiments, benthic macroinvertebrates and fish were collected 1 year prior to harvest and in each of 3 years after harvest. We observed interannual variation for the macroinvertebrate abundance, diversity and taxon …

The Duration Of The Effects Of Repeated Widespread Badger Culling On Cattle Tuberculosis Following The Cessation Of Culling, Helen E. Jenkins, Rosie Woodroffe, Christl A. Donnelly Feb 2010

The Duration Of The Effects Of Repeated Widespread Badger Culling On Cattle Tuberculosis Following The Cessation Of Culling, Helen E. Jenkins, Rosie Woodroffe, Christl A. Donnelly

Michigan Bovine Tuberculosis Bibliography and Database

Background: In the British Isles, control of cattle tuberculosis (TB) is hindered by persistent infection of wild badger (Meles meles) populations. A large-scale field trial—the Randomised Badger Culling Trial (RBCT)—previously showed that widespread badger culling produced modest reductions in cattle TB incidence during culling, which were offset by elevated TB risks for cattle on adjoining lands. Once culling was halted, beneficial effects inside culling areas increased, while detrimental effects on adjoining lands disappeared. However, a full assessment of the utility of badger culling requires information on the duration of culling effects.

Methodology/Principal Findings: We monitored cattle TB incidence in and …

Compliance With International Environmental Regimes: Chinese Lessons, Roda Mushkat Feb 2010

Compliance With International Environmental Regimes: Chinese Lessons, Roda Mushkat

William & Mary Environmental Law and Policy Review

The global ecosystem continues to display signs of strain because of a policy of inadequate responses that are not entirely commensurate with the challenge and a substantial gap between prescribed and actual behavior within and across State boundaries. Weak adherence to international environmental law, one of the factors contributing to the disparity between normative expectations and observed outcomes, has been explored extensively by legal researchers. Some of the insights that have been generated may be fruitfully examined in light of the problematic Chinese experience on the ecological front.

Taxation, Pregnancy, And Privacy, Bridget J. Crawford

William & Mary Journal of Race, Gender, and Social Justice

This Article frames a discussion of surrogacy within the context of existing income tax laws. A surrogate receives money for carrying and bearing a child. This payment is income by any definition, even if the surrogacy contract recites that it is a “reimbursement.” Cases and rulings on the income tax consequences of the sale of blood and human breast milk, as well as analogies to situations in which people are paid to wear advertising on their bodies, support the conclusion that a surrogate recognizes taxable income, although the Internal Revenue Service has never stated so. For tax purposes, the reproductive …
