Recapitulating Osteoblastogenesis With Electrospun Fibrinogen Nanofibers And Adipose Stem Cells And Electrospinning Adipose Tissue-Derived Basement Membrane, Michael Francis
Theses and Dissertations
To repair, replace, or regenerate damaged or diseased tissue has been a long-standing, albeit elusive, goal in medical research. Here, we characterize patient-derivable mesenchymal stem cell types, termed adipose-derived stem cells (ASCs). These cells, which can be derived from liposuction fat and lipoaspirate saline, are sources for patient-derivable extracellular matrix (ECM), fibrinogen (Fg) and adipose tissue extracellular matrix, and may prove useful for synthesizing new bone tissue analogues in vitro. Traditionally and rapidly isolated ASCs were thoroughly characterized as multipotent, having osteogenic, adipogenic, and chondrogenic differentiation potential, and they exhibited comparable proliferative lifespans. These ASCs also shared an indistinguishable immunophenotype …
Temporal Biomass Density And Filamentous Bacteria Effects On Secondary Settling, Patricia A. Jones
Temporal Biomass Density And Filamentous Bacteria Effects On Secondary Settling, Patricia A. Jones
Civil Engineering ETDs
The activated sludge wastewater treatment process is the most common technology used today and solids separation is a critical and often problematic component of this technology. This leads to requirements for larger clarifiers, increased pumping costs of the diluted settled solids stream, and increased costs for solids treatment. For the past thirty years, the majority of the research in secondary settling problems has focused on the role of filamentous bacteria, and also factors such as floc size and shape. The effects of variable biomass density on settleability of biosolids produced in full scale activated sludge wastewater treatment systems has been …

Dkk1 Mediated Inhibition Of Wnt Signaling In Postnatal Mice Leads To Loss Of Tec Progenitors And Thymic Degeneration, Masako Osada, Logan Jardine, Ruth Misir, Thomas Andl, Sarah E. Millar, Mark Pezzano
Publications and Research
Background Thymic epithelial cell (TEC) microenvironments are essential for the recruitment of T cell precursors from the bone marrow, as well as the subsequent expansion and selection of thymocytes resulting in a mature self-tolerant T cell repertoire. The molecular mechanisms, which control both the initial development and subsequent maintenance of these critical microenvironments, are poorly defined. Wnt signaling has been shown to be important to the development of several epithelial tissues and organs. Regulation of Wnt signaling has also been shown to impact both early thymocyte and thymic epithelial development. However, early blocks in thymic organogenesis or death of the …

Modeling And Visualization Of Cardiovascular Systems, Thomas Wischgoll
Modeling And Visualization Of Cardiovascular Systems, Thomas Wischgoll
Computer Science and Engineering Faculty Publications
Modeling complex organs, such as the human heart, requires a detailed understanding of the geometric and mechanical properties of that organ. Similarly, the model is only as accurate as the precision of the underlying properties allow. Hence, it is of great importance that accurate measurements of the geometric configuration are available. This paper describes the different steps that are necessary for creating and visualizing such a vascular model, ranging from determining a basic geometric model, gathering statistical data necessary to extend an existing model up to the visualization of the resulting large-scale vascular models.

The 40-residue peptide isoform β-amyloid (Aβ1-40) is associated with Alzheimer's disease. Although found in the tangles and fibrous mats that characterize the brain in advanced stages of the disease, the toxic form of Aβ is believed to be oligomers or "protofibrils". Characterization of these fairly small structures in solution, especially in the presence of the much larger assemblies they also form, is a daunting task. Additionally, little is known about the rate of Aβ assembly or whether it can be triggered easily. Perhaps most importantly, the conditions for reversing assembly are not fully understood. Fluorescence photobleaching with modulation detection of …

Predicting Neointimal Hyperplasia In Stented Arteries Using Time-Dependant Computational Fluid Dynamics: A Review, Jonathan Murphy, Fergal Boyle
Predicting Neointimal Hyperplasia In Stented Arteries Using Time-Dependant Computational Fluid Dynamics: A Review, Jonathan Murphy, Fergal Boyle
Articles
This paper reviews the recent literature regarding the time-dependant computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analyses of blood flow through implanted coronary stents. The in vivo processes which result in arterial restenosis are identified. The definition and range of the computationally predicted variables which are believed to stimulate the restenosis processes are evaluated. The reviewed literature is subdivided into effect-based in which the effects of altering the flow model are investigated and design-based in which different geometric stent configurations are compared. Finally, conclusions are made regarding the body of work reviewed and recommendations are provided for future work in this field.

During apoptosis, the process of mitochondrial outer membrane permeabilization (MOMP) represents a point-of-no-return as it commits the cell to death. Here we have assessed the role of caspases, Bcl-2 family members and the mitochondrial permeability transition pore on ER stress-induced MOMP and subsequent cell death. Induction of ER stress leads to upregulation of several genes such as Grp78, Edem1, Erp72, Atf4, Wars, Herp, p58ipk, and ERdj4 and leads to caspase activation, release of mitochondrial intermembrane proteins and dissipation of mitochondrial transmembrane potential (DeltaPsim). Mouse embryonic fibroblasts (MEFs) from caspase-9, -2 and, -3 knock-out mice were resistant to ER stress-induced apoptosis …

Taxonomic Revision Of Passiflora Section Xerogona (Raf.) Killip (Passifloraceae), Tatiana Erika Boza Espinoza
Theses
Passiflora subgenus Decaloba section Xerogona is a group of herbaceous vines found in subtropical and tropical regions of America. The 15 species, including two subspecies, recognized here are primarily distributed in Central America, with a few also found in South America. The species of the section are recognized by their very unusual dehiscent capsular fruit, absence of bracts and laminar nectaries and their transversely grooved seeds. The section contains two problematic species complexes; P. capsularis and P. rubra. The morphological variation among and within these two complex species are examined in this study using Principal Component Analysis (PCA) based on …

Marrying Into Financial Abuse: A Solution To Protect The Elderly In California, Ashley E. Rathbun
Marrying Into Financial Abuse: A Solution To Protect The Elderly In California, Ashley E. Rathbun
San Diego Law Review
This Comment argues that California should require proof of an elder's marital capacity from an attending physician or mental health professional to ensure protection of elders whose mental capacity has declined to a point where they can no longer understand what marriage entails. Part II explores the problem of financial elder abuse and examines how it pertains to marriage in California. Part III explains the levels of capacity required to enter into marriage, create testamentary documents, and enter into binding contracts, and the reasons for these capacity requirements. Part IV discusses procedural and statutory safeguards from the law of trusts …
