Electroporation And Electrophoresis System And Method For Achieving Molecular Penetration Into Cells In Vivo, Richard Heller, Richard Gilbert, Mark J. Jaroszeski, Loree C. Heller, Melinda L. Lucas

USF Patents

The electroporation system and method combine pulses having different characteristics for delivering molecules to cells in vivo. The pulses include a high-intensity pulse for inducing electroporation and a low-intensity pulse to induce electrophoretic molecule movement within an interstitial space, molecule adherence to a cell membrane, and electrophoretic movement of the molecule through the permeabilized membrane. The use of a high-intensity and a low-intensity pulse achieves improved delivery; reduction of intensity and/or duration of pulses for inducing electroporation; and decreased muscle stimulation, tissue damage, and patient discomfort.

The Correlation Between Rates Of Cancer And Autism: An Exploratory Ecological Investigation, Hung-Teh Kao, Stephen L. Buka, Karl T. Kelsey, David F. Gruber, Barbara Porton

Publications and Research

Background: Autism is associated with high rates of genomic aberrations, including chromosomal rearrangements and de novo copy-number variations. These observations are reminiscent of cancer, a disease where genomic rearrangements also play a role. We undertook a correlative epidemiological study to explore the possibility that shared risk factors might exist for autism and specific types of cancer.

Methodology/Principal Findings: To determine if significant correlations exist between the prevalence of autism and the incidence of cancer, we obtained and analyzed state-wide data reported by age and gender throughout the United States. Autism data were obtained from the U.S. Department of Education via …

Requirements For Transitional Endoplasmic Reticulum Site Structure And Function In Saccharomyces Cerevisiae, Polina Shindiapina, Charles Barlowe Feb 2010

Requirements For Transitional Endoplasmic Reticulum Site Structure And Function In Saccharomyces Cerevisiae, Polina Shindiapina, Charles Barlowe

Dartmouth Scholarship

Secretory proteins are exported from the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) at specialized regions known as the transitional ER (tER). Coat protein complex II (COPII) proteins are enriched at tER sites, although the mechanisms underlying tER site assembly and maintenance are not understood. Here, we investigated the dynamic properties of tER sites in Saccharomyces cerevisiae and probed protein and lipid requirements for tER site structure and function. Thermosensitive sec12 and sec16 mutations caused a collapse of tER sites in a manner that depended on nascent secretory cargo. Continual fatty acid synthesis was required for ER export and for normal tER site structure, …

Properties Of Carbon Nanotubes Under External Factors: Adsorption, Mechanical Deformations, Defects, And External Electric Fields, Yaroslav Shtogun Feb 2010

Properties Of Carbon Nanotubes Under External Factors: Adsorption, Mechanical Deformations, Defects, And External Electric Fields, Yaroslav Shtogun

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Carbon nanotubes have unique electronic, optical, mechanical, and transport properties which make them an important element of nanoscience and nanotechnology. However, successful application and integration of carbon nanotubes into new nanodevices requires fundamental understanding of their property changes under the influence of many external factors. This dissertation presents qualitative and quantitative theoretical understanding of property changes, while carbon nanotubes are exposed to the deformations, defects, external electric fields, and adsorption. Adsorption mechanisms due to Van der Waals dispersion forces are analyzed first for the interactions of graphitic materials and biological molecules with carbon nanotubes. In particular, the calculations are performed …

Remarkable Iodine-Catalyzed Synthesis Of Novel Pyrrole- Bearing N-Polyaromatic B-Lactams, Debasish Bandyopadhyay, Gildardo Rivera, Isabel Salinas, Hector Aguilar, Bimal K. Banik

School of Integrative Biological & Chemical Sciences (Formerly Dept. of Chemistry)

Because of their interesting biological properties various methods for the synthesis of substituted pyrroles are described in the literature. However, synthesis of pyrroles fused with a β-lactam ring has not been reported. Our group has demonstrated synthesis and biological evaluation of various β-lactams as anticancer agents. The anticancer activities of these compounds have prompted us to study the synthesis of pyrroles bound to the β-lactams. We have identified an expeditious synthetic method for the preparation of pyrroles fused with β-lactams by reacting 3-amino β-lactams with acetonylacetone in the presence of catalytic amounts (5 mol%) of molecular iodine at room temperature. …

The Distribution And Population Dynamics Of The Golden Mouse (Ochrotomys Nuttalli) At Its Southern Range Periphery, Sarah A. Smiley

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This research assesses the status of the golden mouse (Ochrotomys nuttalli) in Florida by taking a multi-pronged approach. Geographic Information Systems (GIS) was used to understand the distribution of habitats and occurrence records for this species within the state. Presence-absence trapping occurred at 13 study sites to determine if historic southern periphery populations were still occupied, gauge if more central populations were being maintained, and document golden mice in previously unrecorded areas. In addition, surveys for O. nuttalli took place at regular intervals at the USF Ecological Research Area to understand how populations of this species fluctuate over …

Renin-Angiotensin System Activation Correlates With Microvascular Dysfunction In A Prospective Cohort Study Of Clinical Sepsis, Kevin C. Doerschug, Angela S. Delsing, Gregory A. Schmidt, Alix Ashare Feb 2010

Renin-Angiotensin System Activation Correlates With Microvascular Dysfunction In A Prospective Cohort Study Of Clinical Sepsis, Kevin C. Doerschug, Angela S. Delsing, Gregory A. Schmidt, Alix Ashare

Dartmouth Scholarship

Microvascular dysregulation characterized by hyporesponsive vessels and heterogeneous bloodflow is implicated in the pathogenesis of organ failure in sepsis. The renin-angiotensin system (RAS) affects the microvasculature, yet the relationships between RAS and organ injury in clinical sepsis remain unclear. We tested our hypothesis that systemic RAS mediators are associated with dysregulation of the microvasculature and with organ failure in clinical severe sepsis.

Identidad And Mejicanidad: Dance Transference Through Mexican Folklórico, Azteca, And Flamenco Dance, Erica Ocegueda Feb 2010

Identidad And Mejicanidad: Dance Transference Through Mexican Folklórico, Azteca, And Flamenco Dance, Erica Ocegueda

Theatre & Dance ETDs

Identidad and Mejicanidad examines cultural identity and dance through the lens of 'owners,' 'borrowers,' and 'renters'. I examine how non-professional participants of these dance forms are beacons for cultural expression and serve to explore the fringe of the sense of cultural knowing through Mexican Folklórico, Azteca, and Flamenco dance. Through these dance forms I interrogate how cultural identity frames questions of authenticity and identity. Ownership of cultural identity and issues of authenticity are a source of ire for many underrepresented groups of people. Maintaining who is 'in control' of a cultural expressions' evolution is a common dispute. The legacy of …

Eugenic Ideology And Historical Osmosis, Ann G. Winfield Feb 2010

Eugenic Ideology And Historical Osmosis, Ann G. Winfield

Education Faculty Publications

Issues of inequity in education are plentiful, but too little attention has been paid to the origins of this inequity which is more tangible than has been acknowledged. This paper traces the early twentieth-century formation of our modern system of education by eminent psychologists and statisticians who were enacting their allegiance to the dominant belief system about intelligence and ability as connected to race and class as expressed and formulated by the eugenics movement. Specifically, this paper explicates the role of eugenic ideology in creating a system designed to sort and classify students according to preconceived notions about their ability …

The Place Of 'Higher Law' In The Quotidian Practice Of Law: Herein Of Practical Reason, Natural Law, Natural Rights, And Sex Toys, Patrick Mckinley Brennan Feb 2010

The Place Of 'Higher Law' In The Quotidian Practice Of Law: Herein Of Practical Reason, Natural Law, Natural Rights, And Sex Toys, Patrick Mckinley Brennan

Working Paper Series

The question of the place of higher law in the ordinary practice of law is even now dogged by the brooding omnipresence caricature. This Article seeks to introduce and apply a philosophically defensible account of natural law, the one defended by Thomas Aquinas, to various problematics of contemporary law and jurisprudence. The Article argues that such higher law is not so high as to be relevant only to sexy constitutional questions, as is often supposed, but to everything we do in law. The Article argues that liberals and conservatives alike should acknowledge both the place of natural law in the …
