Select Tissue Mineralconcentrations And Chronic Wasting Disease Status In Mule Deer From North-Central Colorado, Lisa L. Wolfe, Mary M. Conner, Cathy L. Bedwell, Paul M. Lukacs, Michael W. Miller

Wildland Resources Faculty Publications

Trace mineral imbalances have been suggested as having a causative or contributory role in chronic wasting disease (CWD), a prion disease of several North American cervid species. To begin exploring relationships between tissue mineral concentrations and CWD in natural systems, we measured liver tissue concentrations of copper, manganese, and molybdenum in samples from 447 apparently healthy, adult (≥2 yr old) mule deer (Odocoileus hemionus) culled or vehicle killed from free-ranging populations in north-central Colorado, United States, where CWD occurs naturally; we also measured copper concentrations in brain-stem (medulla oblongata at the obex) tissue from 181 of these deer. Analyses revealed …

Kesmas

Positive Carotenoid Balance Correlates With Greater Reproductive Performance In A Wild Bird, Rebecca Safran, Kevin J. Mcgraw, Matt Wilkins, Joanna K. Hubbard, Julie Marling

School of Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications

Background: Carotenoids can confer somatic and reproductive benefits, but most evidence is from captive animal experimentation or single time-point sampling. Another perhaps more informative means by which to assess physiological contributions to animal performance is by tracking an individual’s ability to increase or sustain carotenoids or other health-related molecules over time, as these are likely to be temporally variable.

Methodology/Principal Findings: In a field study of North American barn swallows (Hirundo rustica erythrogaster), we analyzed within-individual changes in carotenoid concentrations by repeatedly sampling the carotenoid profiles of individuals over the course of the breeding season. Our results demonstrate …

Passive Acoustic Studies Of Estuarine Fish Populations Of Southwest Florida, James Vincent Locascio Feb 2010

Passive Acoustic Studies Of Estuarine Fish Populations Of Southwest Florida, James Vincent Locascio

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Recordings of fish sound production were made in Charlotte Harbor, Florida using Long Term Acoustic Recording Systems (LARS) programmed to record 10 seconds of sound every 10 minutes. Results demonstrated a strong circadian pattern in fish sound production that occurred within a few hours of dusk each evening. Sound production lasted on average 8.7 hrs each evening during the peak spawning season. LARS were deployed when Hurricane Charley crossed Charlotte Harbor in August, 2004. The hurricane did not inhibit nightly chorusing events of spawning fish. Rather, sound levels produced by spawning fish on the night of and 3 days after …

Reducing The Cost Of Pumping Irrigation Water, Derrel L. Martin, William L. Kranz, Tom W. Dorn, Steve R. Melvin, Alan J. Corr Feb 2010

Reducing The Cost Of Pumping Irrigation Water, Derrel L. Martin, William L. Kranz, Tom W. Dorn, Steve R. Melvin, Alan J. Corr

Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Presentations and White Papers

Irrigation accounts for a large portion of the energy used in Nebraska agriculture. The cost to pump irrigation water depends on the type of energy used to power the pumping unit. This document describes a method to estimate the cost of pumping water and to compare the amount of energy used to that for a well maintained and designed pumping plant. The results can help determine the feasibility of repairing the pumping plant.

Nmr Dynamics Investigation Of Ligand-Induced Changes Of Main And Side-Chain Arginine N-H’S In Human Phosphomevalonate Kinase, Andrew L. Olson, Sheng Cai, Timothy J. Herdendorf, Henry M. Miziorko, Daniel S. Sem Feb 2010

Nmr Dynamics Investigation Of Ligand-Induced Changes Of Main And Side-Chain Arginine N-H’S In Human Phosphomevalonate Kinase, Andrew L. Olson, Sheng Cai, Timothy J. Herdendorf, Henry M. Miziorko, Daniel S. Sem

Chemistry Faculty Research and Publications

Phosphomevalonate kinase (PMK) catalyzes phosphoryl transfer from adenosine triphosphate (ATP) to mevalonate 5-phosphate (M5P) on the pathway for synthesizing cholesterol and other isoprenoids. To permit this reaction, its substrates must be brought proximal, which would result in a significant and repulsive buildup of negative charge. To facilitate this difficult task, PMK contains 17 arginines and eight lysines. However, the way in which this charge neutralization and binding is achieved, from a structural and dynamics perspective, is not known. More broadly, the role of arginine side-chain dynamics in binding of charged substrates has not been experimentally defined for any protein to …

The Fanconi Anemia (Fa)/Brca Dna Damage Repair Pathway Is Regulated By Nf-Κb And Mediates Drug Resistance In Multiple Myeloma, Danielle N. Yarde Feb 2010

The Fanconi Anemia (Fa)/Brca Dna Damage Repair Pathway Is Regulated By Nf-Κb And Mediates Drug Resistance In Multiple Myeloma, Danielle N. Yarde

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The Fanconi Anemia (FA)/BRCA DNA damage repair pathway plays a critical role in the cellular response to stress induced by DNA alkylating agents and greatly influences drug response in cancer treatment. We recently reported that FA/BRCA DNA damage repair pathway genes are overexpressed and causative for resistance in multiple myeloma (MM) cell lines selected for resistance to melphalan. We hypothesized that the FA/BRCA DNA damage repair pathway mediates response and resistance to chemotherapeutic agents used to treat multiple myeloma and other cancers, and targeting this pathway is vital to overcoming drug resistance. In this dissertation, we show that FA/BRCA pathway …

The Evolution Of Human Genetic And Phenotypic Variation In Africa, Michael Campbell, Sarah Tishkoff Feb 2010

The Evolution Of Human Genetic And Phenotypic Variation In Africa, Michael Campbell, Sarah Tishkoff

Department of Biology Faculty Publications

Africa is the birthplace of modern humans, and is the source of the geographic expansion of ancestral populations into other regions of the world. Indigenous Africans are characterized by high levels of genetic diversity within and between populations. The pattern of genetic variation in these populations has been shaped by demographic events occurring over the last 200,000 years. The dramatic variation in climate, diet, and exposure to infectious disease across the continent has also resulted in novel genetic and phenotypic adaptations in extant Africans. This review summarizes some recent advances in our understanding of the demographic history and selective pressures …
