The Foundation To Collaborate: Understanding The Role Of Participant Interests, Tia S. Henderson Jan 2010

The Foundation To Collaborate: Understanding The Role Of Participant Interests, Tia S. Henderson

Dissertations and Theses

Collaborative processes are widely used to harness resources for addressing community problems. Despite their positive potential, collaborative projects can fragment. Sources of fragmentation include participant misperception of facts, difficulties in defining the problem, and misunderstandings among stakeholders. Disruptions from these elements may impede a group's progress in fostering and implementing agreements. Theoretical and empirical research from conflict resolution has shown that discussing participant interests and the use of facilitation techniques can help negotiators engage in innovative problem solving. Interests are participants' underlying needs, concerns, and desires that shape how individuals perceive issues and the stances they take. Less attention has …

The English Reformation In Image And Print: Cultural Continuity, Disruptions, And Communications In Tudor Art, Jessica Hoeschen Jan 2010

The English Reformation In Image And Print: Cultural Continuity, Disruptions, And Communications In Tudor Art, Jessica Hoeschen

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In the sixteenth century, Martin Luther's Protestant Reformation generated multiple reform movements and political transformations in Europe. Within this general period of reform, political and cultural changes from the Tudor era (1485-1603) created a separate English Reformation. The English Reformation evolved from the different agendas of the early Tudor monarchs and occurred in two distinct waves: an initial, more moderate Henrician Reformation and a later, more complete Edwardian Reformation. Henry VIII and Edward VI's attempts to redefine monarchy through a new State and Church identity drove English church reform during this period, giving these religious shifts distinct political roots. Cultural …

Super-Resolution Using Adaptive Wiener Filters, Russell C. Hardie Jan 2010

Super-Resolution Using Adaptive Wiener Filters, Russell C. Hardie

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

The spatial sampling rate of an imaging system is determined by the spacing of the detectors in the focal plane array (FPA). The spatial frequencies present in the image on the focal plane are band-limited by the optics. This is due to diffraction through a finite aperture. To guarantee that there will be no aliasing during image acquisiton, the Nyquist criterion dictates that the sampling rate must be greater than twice the cut-off frequency of the optics. However, optical designs involve a number of trade-offs and typical imaging systems are designed with some level of aliasing. We will refer to …

The Celebration In 1964 Freedom Summer Art: The Role Of Visual Rhetoric In Uncovering The Lost Voice, Amy Ward Jan 2010

The Celebration In 1964 Freedom Summer Art: The Role Of Visual Rhetoric In Uncovering The Lost Voice, Amy Ward

The Larrie and Bobbi Weil Undergraduate Research Award

The pictures of conflict and struggle, and not words alone, were the driving force behind the Civil Rights movement (Kathleen Hall Jamieson, 1988). However, though these pictures provided the visual and rhetorical force for public to acknowledge the injustices of segregation (Gallagher & Zagacki, 2007) these pictures were not the source of the movement but rather its culmination. In dramatic and visual contrast to the violence inflicted on the Movement, the artwork created within the 1964 Mississippi Freedom Summer Project depicts a community centered on harmony and respect. This artwork, therefore, provides a glimpse into often neglected positive communication that …

The Intersection Of Image, Rhetoric, And Witnessing: A Rhetorical Analysis Of The Abu Ghraib Prisoner Abuse Scandal, Elizabeth Jane Durham Smith Jan 2010

The Intersection Of Image, Rhetoric, And Witnessing: A Rhetorical Analysis Of The Abu Ghraib Prisoner Abuse Scandal, Elizabeth Jane Durham Smith

Wayne State University Dissertations

This project looks at the Abu Ghraib Prisoner Abuse Scandal and the ways those figured in the notorious images were named as "bad apples" to explain the shocking scenes to a mainstream American collective as well as expands more traditional understandings of witnessing through the examination of this complex moment. Beyond the narrowly legal and political issues, the photographs from Abu Ghraib also raise questions about how images of atrocities are received, interpreted, and contested with this project rephrasing the question "what do we see when we look at the images from Abu Ghraib?" to that of "what did we …

Evaluating The Effectiveness Of A Photographic Schedule To Teach Adults With Autism To Use An Apple Ipod®, Melissa M. Anglesea Jan 2010

Evaluating The Effectiveness Of A Photographic Schedule To Teach Adults With Autism To Use An Apple Ipod®, Melissa M. Anglesea

Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects

Many individuals with autism display deficits in the areas of verbal and written language. Picture prompts, in the form of a photographic schedule, can be a useful tool because they can be used in place of verbal and written language. In addition, a photographic schedule can replace prompts from an instructor. Using a multiple-baseline-across-subjects design, this study demonstrates the effectiveness of using a photographic schedule to teach three adult males with autism to use an Apple iPod®. By the end of the study, all participants were able to successfully operate the iPod® to listen to music without prompts from the …

Negating The Negation: The Practice Of Parkour In Spectacular City, Matthew D. Lamb Jan 2010

Negating The Negation: The Practice Of Parkour In Spectacular City, Matthew D. Lamb

Kaleidoscope: A Graduate Journal of Qualitative Communication Research

This paper interrogates the role of architecture in (re)producing and mediating the spectacular city. I use Debord’s theorizations on the society of the spectacle to forefront the commodifcation of urban architectural space. Finally, I argue that the art of parkour, as a spectacular performance, answers Debord’s call for an analysis of the spectacle within its own language. Parkour, I suggest, offers a reinterpretation of the city’s architectural space by falsifying the false reality of the spectacle and challenging its domination.

With the introduction of new digital and physical tools into the workplace, the process of design has dramatically changed over the past few decades. Thus, design processes have evolved into many forms which vary, not only between organizations, but within organizations, and even within teams over time. These myriad “mutations” of the design process call for a new method to identify patterns of design activity and their change in order to deeply understand the design process. In this paper we suggest a new method for identifying patterns of activity in design teams. Such activity involves composites of distributed interactions – …

I Put You There: User-Generated Content And Anticircumvention, Rebecca Tushnet Jan 2010

I Put You There: User-Generated Content And Anticircumvention, Rebecca Tushnet

Vanderbilt Journal of Entertainment & Technology Law

This Article discusses recent rulemaking proceedings before the Copyright Office concerning the anticircumvention provisions of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA). During these proceedings, non-institutionally affiliated artists organized to assert their interests in making fair use of existing works, adding new voices to the debate. A proposed exemption for noncommercial remix video is justified to address the in terrorem effect of anticircumvention law on fair use. Without an exemption, fair users are subjected to a digital literacy test combined with a digital poll tax, and this regime suppresses fair use. The experience of artists (vidders) confronting the law illustrates both …

Interactive Text-Image Conceptual Models For Literary Interpretation And Composition In The Digital Age, Beth Nixon Weaver Jan 2010

Interactive Text-Image Conceptual Models For Literary Interpretation And Composition In The Digital Age, Beth Nixon Weaver

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation focuses on text-image conceptual models for literary interpretation and composition in the digital age. The models investigate an interactive blend of textually-based linear-sequential approaches and visually-based spatial-simultaneous approaches. The models employ Gestalt-inspired figure-ground segregation models, along with other theoretical models, that demonstrate the dynamic capabilities of images as conceptual tools as well as alternate forms of text. The models encourage an interpretative style with active participants in openended, multi-sensory meaning-making processes. The models use the flexible tools of modern technology as approaches to meaning-making with art strategies used for research strategies as well as a means to appreciate …

Adventures Of Kody A Children's Visual Storybook And Interactive Web Site, Matthew L. Walsh

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In order to experience unconditional love, prejudices must be exposed and overcome. People often meet others with a disability or handicap and unknowingly treat these individuals negatively. As a middle school teacher, I have often witnessed students behaving cruelly towards those that are different. When my dog became a paraplegic I was inspired to develop a project to assist young readers in the development of conscientious actions towards individuals with disabilities. This document chronicles the development, procedures, and outcomes of the process behind that artistic endeavor. The artistic elements of this thesis project are a written children's storybook and an …

Assessment Strategies: Tools That Support Nonverbal Students, With Multiple Disabilities, Acquiring Literacy Skills, Jamie Creeden

Education Masters

The purpose of this study was to determine effective instructional tools that teachers can utilize to help plan instruction so that nonverbal students with multiple disabilities can acquire literacy skills in the classroom. One student, Trinity, who is nonverbal and has been diagnosed with Chiari malformation, was assessed using a variety of formal (Peabody Nonverbal Picture Vocabulary Assessment (Form A)), and informal assessment tools (interviews and teacher-made literacy assessments) to determine what literacy skills she possesses. The findings suggest that Trinity possesses a variety of receptive and expressive literacy skills typical of other children her age. Teachers just need the …

Anthropomorphism In Sign Languages: A Look At Poetry And Storytelling With A Focus On British Sign Language, R. Sutton-Spence, Donna Jo Napoli Jan 2010

Anthropomorphism In Sign Languages: A Look At Poetry And Storytelling With A Focus On British Sign Language, R. Sutton-Spence, Donna Jo Napoli

Linguistics Faculty Works

The work presented here considers some linguistic methods used in sign anthropomorphism. We find a cline of signed anthropomorphism that depends on a number of factors, including the skills and intention of the signer, the animacy of the entities represented, the form of their bodies, and the form of vocabulary signs referring to those entities. We consider four main factors that allow signers to anthropomorphize the whole range of entities (from animate to inanimate): the linguistic base that allows such play, the ability of the nonmanuals to anthropomorphize even when the manual articulators are signing in an ordinary way, the …

High Utility Video Surveillance System On Public Transport Using Wimax Technology, Iftekhar Ahmad, Daryoush Habibi

Research outputs pre 2011

Video surveillance on public transport is a useful tool to fight against anti-social behaviour like vandalism, harassment, graffiti and terrorism. Real-time video surveillance on moving public transport faces serious technological challenges mainly due to limited throughput offered by existing communication technologies at high vehicular speeds. Success of real-time video surveillance on public transport heavily depends on future communication technologies like WiMAX. WiMAX has emerged as an exciting technology with promises to offer high throughput and improved quality of services (QoS), key requirements for video surveillance on public transport. WiMAX however, offers limited throughput at high vehicular speeds mainly because of …

Theses and Dissertations

The intent of this research was to discover what, if any, disconnect exists between community college students' library perceptions and technology use. The researcher studied how students at a very-large southwestern community college are using the physical and virtual college library, and their overall technology and library technology use. The research addressed the following six research questions: (a) What are the technology profiles (defined as technology ownership, use, skill, and adoption status) of students at a very-large size southwestern community college? (b) What are the library profiles (defined as library use, skill, awareness, and emerging technology receptivity) of students at …

Prospects For Change: Creating A Blended Learning Program Through A Culture Of Support, Bill Leach Jan 2010

Prospects For Change: Creating A Blended Learning Program Through A Culture Of Support, Bill Leach

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Blended learning, a combination of traditional face to face (F2f) instruction and computer-mediated communication (CMC), is a popular trend in many universities and corporate settings today. Most universities provide faculty members course management systems, such as Blackboard, Angel, and others as a way to organize and transmit course materials to students. In order to assess the pedagogical value of blended learning in a university-level first year composition (FYC) environment, it is necessary to view the environment through a critical lens and adequately train faculty in the need for and use of the features of the learning management software (LMS). The …
