Wikipedia is one of the most successful online knowledge bases, attracting millions of visits daily. Not surprisingly, its huge success has in turn led to immense research interest for a better understanding of the collaborative knowledge building process. In this paper, we performed a (terrorism) domain-specific case study, comparing and contrasting the knowledge evolution in Wikipedia with a knowledge base created by domain experts. Specifically, we used the Terrorism Knowledge Base (TKB) developed by experts at MIPT. We identified 409 Wikipedia articles matching TKB records, and went ahead to study them from three aspects: creation, revision, and link evolution. We …

A Multidimensional Community Development Model For Resettlement Communitites: A Case Study In The Phillipines, James Devencia Riturban
College of Liberal Arts & Social Sciences Theses and Dissertations
The density and growing population in urban areas have led to an increasing number of slum communities amongst environments with scarce resources and hazardous living conditions. In order to revitalize and modernize urban area, governments have begun relocating and resettling slum communities to outer areas of the metropolis. As a result, the displacement of people from former jobs, social networks, and cultural lifestyles have affected individual attitudes and created communities with limited community cohesion and sustainable livelihood. In order to alleviate the recreation of poverty, community development efforts in resettlement communities must include pro-poor, sustainable economic growth, inclusive social development, …

Engaging The Engagers: Implications For The Improvement Of Extension Work Design, William S. Weyhrauch, Satoris S. Culbertson, Maura J. Mills, Clive J. Fullager
Journal of Extension
County Extension agents from the Midwest were surveyed on a variety of psychological variables. Differences among agents in the fields of Family and Consumer Science (FCS), Agriculture and Natural Resources (ANR), and 4H Youth Development (4HYD) were examined as well as differences among highly and lesser engaged agents. Results showed that FCS agents had higher levels of dedication, absorption, and work-family facilitation. ANR agents reported greater work-role salience than other areas and lower family-role salience. Highly engaged agents reported experiencing greater work-family facilitation, positive affectivity, and psychological capital. Implications for design and management of Extension work are discussed.
Educators Or Facilitators? Clarifying Extension's Role In The Emerging Local Food Systems Movement, Brian Raison
Educators Or Facilitators? Clarifying Extension's Role In The Emerging Local Food Systems Movement, Brian Raison
Journal of Extension
With the recent growth of the local food systems movement, OSU Extension formed a new statewide team. In the process, Extension program delivery systems were explored contrasting traditional program delivery (historically rooted in a teacher-clientele, information transfer, demonstration methodology) vs. a community capacity-building facilitation process. This seemingly marginal distinction raised questions with deeper implications for Extension's outreach and engagement process. In brief, how can Extension fill the gap between community-expressed needs and the traditional framework of delivery? Should Extension help communities fulfill their goals and objectives by acting as facilitators, co-conveners, and true partners, rather than simply as educators?

Sustainability Of Ngos In Kosova: Challenges Of The Third Sector And The Ways Forward : [Presentation Given May 18, 2010], Dardane Nuka
Theses
This capstone project addresses the problem of sustainability of NGOs in Kosova as the vast majority of NGOs face serious difficulties in sustaining their work. Except for a small number of Kosova NGOs, that managed to achieve a desirable level of institutional and financial sustainability, the rest tend to be failing. According to the numbers provided by the NGO Registration and Liaison Office of the Government of Kosova, out of the around 5000 registered NGOs, about 10% are estimated to be still active or partially active.1 The research methodology of this capstone project was quantitative and qualitative based on surveys …

Piece To The Puzzle: Sustainable Elements Fitting Together, Heather C. Nelson
Architecture Masters of Science Program: Theses
Sustainability, green, and eco-friendly are very popular topics right now. Those words and many like them are being used in almost every industry. But it’s not just a trend, it’s a necessary movement. Using green building elements as a starting point for design, just as site, typology, and clients’ request are used, is how a sustainable building is created. These elements must be adjusted for every site because local materials, climate and community all play a role.
Deep investigation of the projects context is important. There are many factors of the site to consider. Physical aspects while important are just …

Above All Else Stop Digging: Local Government Law As A (Partial) Cause Of (And Solution To) The Current Housing Crisis, Darien Shanske
University of Michigan Journal of Law Reform
So many things have gone wrong with our housing market that it is hard to know where to start. One simple diagnosis is that we invested too much in houses that were not worth as much as we thought. Looked at in this way, it is relatively easy to see how innovations like interest-only loans contributed to an over-valuation of housing. Certain actions of the federal government were and are also clearly problematic, such as the longstanding tax breaks for home ownership.
This Article looks at state and local government law, and particularly at financing mechanisms created by state law …
Farm To School Programs As A Tool For Food System Sustainability, Samantha Jackson
Farm To School Programs As A Tool For Food System Sustainability, Samantha Jackson
All Theses
Are Farm to School Programs being utilized by communities as a component of agricultural sustainability? This initial question led to a larger inquiry as to what agricultural sustainability tools communities are incorporating, with Farm to School Programs as a component, and what roles, or potential roles, planners are playing in program creation and implementation. A literature review of the current food system, sustainability threats imbedded within the system, and the potential for local food system planning, specifically Farm to School Programs, to overcome these threats provided a framework for research on the agricultural sustainability tools being planned for within communities …

Sustainable Syracuse: A Community Revitalization Initiative Through Green Mapping, Morgan Leykam
Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All
A reinvention of Syracuse’s identity is taking place. A once industrial hub that could tout the Eerie Canal as its central lifeline and Onondaga Lake as a popular, American vacation spot has found itself fighting for two major development goals: sustainability and redeveloping low-income neighborhoods. “Creative city” development models are gaining popularity as America moves from manufacturing to service-based industries. But creative cities cannot be established using top-down approaches. When a creative city is built by the people who live in it, their passion comes through in the city’s image. What is perceived by visitors is a young, vibrant community …

This dissertation's objective is to understand the constraints to economic participation by indigenous Tanzanians living in and around current and/or future tourism destinations. Using qualitative methods, this study investigated local perceptions and involvement in tourism economies by comparing independent case studies in three destinations differing in land tenure. Fifteen village-based focus groups were employed in villages around Pangani District (Tanga Region), Amani Nature Reserve (Tanga Region), and Arumeru District (Arusha Region). The purpose of the village-based focus groups was to evaluate local access to physical, financial, human, social, and natural capital as a means to encourage economic participation in the …

The purpose of this project is to identify sources of funding for sustainable building projects and create a catalog of the findings. This study targeted the nonprofit, humanitarian, and private organization sectors with the goal to encourage subsequent projects that may positively impact the quality of life for people in need.
It has been predicted that in the next 25 years 75% of America's built environment will be either new or renovated. The downside is that new buildings cause substantial ecological damage due to the extraction of materials and account for as much as 40% of all greenhouse gases. As …

The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts (VMFA) of Richmond, Virginia, is completing its largest expansion and reinstalling over 6000 artworks, including the Ancient American art collection, to be displayed in the museum’s first permanent gallery space for Ancient American art. In preparation for expansion, the VMFA issued its “Interpretive Plan Guiding Principles,” identifying visitor motivations for viewing the collections. As collection accessibility is central to the museum’s mission statement, all galleries are to provide visitors with the tools to engage with artworks. This thesis project presents a comprehensive history of Pre-Columbian collecting in museums and the history of the VMFA …

Articulating Social Change In Puerto Rico: Environmental Education As A Model For Youth Socio-Political Development And Community-Led School Reform, Federico Cintrón-Moscoso
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Recent attempts at developing an environmental education agenda in public schools emphasize the need to foster greater public awareness about environmental rights, issues, and solutions, while producing citizens with the knowledge and skills needed to address the ecological challenges of contemporary society. However, some scholars have argued that the attempt to integrate environmental principles into the school curricula has created a conflict between the politically-oriented goals of environmental education and the more passive practices of uncritical assimilation and reproduction found in many schools today (Stevenson 2007). Moreover, although there is a need for public schools to take on the challenge …
