Making The Desert Blossom: Public Works In Washington County, Utah, Michael Lyle Shamo
Making The Desert Blossom: Public Works In Washington County, Utah, Michael Lyle Shamo
Theses and Dissertations
The following thesis is a study of how communities of Washington County, Utah developed within one of the most inhospitable deserts of the American West. A trend of reliance on public works programs during economic depressions, not only put people to work, but also provided an influx of outside aid to develop an infrastructure for future economic stability and growth. Each of these public works was carefully planned by leaders who not only saw the immediate impact these projects would have, but also future benefits they would confer. These communities also became dependent on acquiring outside investment capital from the …
Transitions Heuristics In The Pursuit Of Well-Being: Situating Interactive Products And Services In Transitions, Fatih Kursat Ozenc
Transitions Heuristics In The Pursuit Of Well-Being: Situating Interactive Products And Services In Transitions, Fatih Kursat Ozenc
DRS Biennial Conference Series
Transitions in people’s lives take shape in the roles they enact, and the environments they inhabit. In these transitions, people encounter the paradox of changing and unchanging happenings, occurring simultaneously at multiple channels with differing magnitudes, and through immediate and long-term interactions. In this multiplicity of dimensions, transitions bring complexity while they emerge, throughout their occurrence, and while they resolve. Dealing with this complexity oftentimes results in stress, decline in emotional and social qualities of experiences. Interactive products and service systems play an important role in transitional experiences, by providing support for people to hold on to during the transitions. …

How Yoopers See The Future Of Their Communities: Why Residents Leave Or Stay In Michigan's Upper Peninsula, Jessica D. Ulrich
Carsey Publications
According to a Community and Environment in Rural America survey, Michigan's Upper Peninsula residents, often called "Yoopers," said that ties to community and the area's natural beauty were significant factors for those who planned on staying in this rural area, which comprises about a third of Michigan's land mass but only 4 percent of its population. Those planning on leaving cited employment opportunities and energy costs as the most important factors in their decision.

Sports Facilities Development Towards Sustainable Community: A Case Study Of Kuala Lumpur, M. Barghchi, D. Omar, M.S. Aman
Research Publications (2006 to 2010)
Sports and sports facilities development have improved rapidly over the past years in Malaysia. However, such improvements are inadequate compared to the overall development of sports at international level. In recent years sport is getting more and more influential and it will continue to grow in importance, even for developing countries. Increase in the amount of public money being spent on sports facilities, at the same time, increase in the number of sports facilities as well as increasingly importance of sustainability necessitate demand to investigate issues surrounding sports facilities development especially in Kuala Lumpur as the regional and national centre …

Tackling The Pic: Successes And Challenges In Teaching The Prison-Industrial Complex, Melissa Ooten
Women, Gender and Sexuality Studies Faculty Publications
“But they’re criminals. We should lock them up and throw away the key!” my student, using a tired refrain, declared. She soon had a classroom of her peers— thoughtful, engaged students who often enjoyed analyzing complicated and difficult social issues—nodding in support. Thus began my entry into teaching and discussing the prison industrial complex (PIC) and abolitionism in a college classroom. Luckily, the class moved beyond this knee-jerk reaction, but I learned a valuable lesson that day. While I regularly engage students in thinking critically about poverty, social justice, race relations, feminism, and inclusion, exploring the possibilities of abolishing a …

Understanding The Influenza A H1n1 2009 Pandemic, Zakariya Al-Muharrmi
Sultan Qaboos University Medical Journal
A new strain of Influenza A virus, with quadruple segment translocation in its RNA, caused an outbreak of human infection in April 2009 in USA and Mexico. It was classified as Influenza A H1N1 2009. The genetic material originates from three different species: human, avian and swine. By June 2009, the World Health Organization (WHO) had classified this strain as a pandemic virus, making it the first pandemic in 40 years. Influenza A H1N1 2009 is transmitted by respiratory droplets; the transmissibility of this strain is higher than other influenza strains which made infection control difficult. The majority of cases …

Mathematics, Statistics, and Computer Science Honors Projects
Why does Netflix.com use star ratings, Digg.com use up/down votes and Face- book use a “like” but not a “dislike” button? In this paper, we extend existing research on rating scales with findings from an experiment we ran to measure the cognitive load users experience while rating. In this paper, we analyze the cognitive load and time required by different rating scales. Our analysis draws upon 14,000 movie and product ratings we collected from 348 users through an online survey. In the survey, we measured the speed and cognitive load users ex- perience under four scales: unary (‘like it’), binary …

A Geographic Approach To Place And Natural Resource Use In Local Food Systems, Leslie Duram, Lydia Oberholtzer
Publications
This article illuminates the geographic concept of ‘place’ in local foods. Because the social aspects of local food have been more fully addressed in previous literature, this review focuses instead on the ecological aspects of farming and food. First, the literature on natural resource use in agriculture provides contextual understanding of water use, biodiversity, soils and agro-ecological methods. The complex relationship between climate change and agriculture is described and models assessing the impacts of climate change on agriculture are detailed. The geography of local food is specifically addressed by describing methods for assessing natural resource use in local food, including …
