Roads To The Great Eucatastrophie: The Christian Mythology Of C.S. Lewis And J.R.R. Tolkien, Laura Ann Hess

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

The purpose of this thesis is to analyze how C.S. Lewis and J.R.R. Tolkien created mythology that is fundamentally Christian but in vastly different ways. This task will be accomplished by examining the childhood and early adult life of both Lewis and Tolkien, as well as the effect their close friendship had on their writing, and by performing a detailed literary analysis of some of their mythological works. After an introduction, the second and third chapters will scrutinize the elements of their childhood and adolescence that shaped their later mythology. The next chapter will look at the importance of their …

Jacob Wrestles The Angel: A Study In Psychoanalytic Midrash, Michael Abramsky Jan 2010

Jacob Wrestles The Angel: A Study In Psychoanalytic Midrash, Michael Abramsky

International Journal of Transpersonal Studies

This essay is a study in psychoanalytic Midrash: a literary and psychological meditation on the

Biblical story of Jacob. The Hebrew verbal root from which the term Midrash derives means to

investigate or explore. It is a genre of Biblical scholarship used to interpret the Bible in symbolic

and inspirational terms. This essay examines Jacob as he moves from a character dominated by

self-defeating neurosis through his transformation into a spiritual being and exemplar of principled

leadership. Insights from Freudian and Jungian psychologies, mythology, and literary traditions are

used to describe and explain Jacob’s character metamorphosis.

Creativity With Purest Energy: How Sir Thomas Wyatt Introduced Modern English Poetics, Jeffery R. Moser Jan 2010

Creativity With Purest Energy: How Sir Thomas Wyatt Introduced Modern English Poetics, Jeffery R. Moser

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The court poetry of Sir Thomas Wyatt (1503-42) asserts a special confidence and boldness of the individual and his poetics that stand at the forefront of an ambitious, sure and powerful England which eventually came into place during his life and afterwards. Wyatt marks the start of a new literary period when humanity and art gradually diverged from religious rites and instruction, dramatic impulses for romantic love and mere desires for adventure, allegory and narrative to favor instead modern demands and conscious intellectualism. Wyatt's poetry best represents this distinct literary break from his native medieval predecessors and from writers who …

Complaints Must Plead Non-Conclusory Facts That Manifest Plausibility To Survive A Motion To Dismiss In All Civil Cases: Ashcroft V. Iqbal, Carly R. Wilson

Duquesne Law Review

The United States Supreme Court held that to survive a motion to dismiss, Bell Atlantic Corp. v. Twombly mandates that complaints in all civil matters must plead enough factual matter that, if accepted as true, plausibly entitles the plaintiff to relief.

Ashcroft v. Iqbal, 129 S. Ct. 1937 (2009).

Counting The Number Of Locally Convex Topologies On A Totally Ordered Finiate Set, Thomas Tyler Clark Jan 2010

Counting The Number Of Locally Convex Topologies On A Totally Ordered Finiate Set, Thomas Tyler Clark

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

We look at locally convex topologies on a totally ordered finite set. We determine a method of finding an upper bound on the number of such topologies on an n element. We show how this problem is related to Pascal’s Triangle and the Fibonacci Numbers. We explain an algorithm for determining the number of locally convex topologies consisting of nested intervals.

An Open Letter To New Ph.D.'S In Communication, Keith T. Hardeman

Iowa Journal of Communication

Regardless of institution type, those already employed as tenure-line college professors have experienced the application and interview processes and, ultimately, succeeded in landing their jobs. But if you don't have such a position, what type of institution will hire you? Indeed, professorial roles of teaching-based and research-based institutions can drastically differ. Securing employment at one or the other not only requires strong qualifications, but also an understanding of varying institutional needs. As a veteran of small college teaching, I've served on a number of search committees. With a sense of sadness, I've witnessed many prospective college professors fresh out of …

The Preferential Option For The Poor - Liberation Theology, A Call To Action, Megan Levy Jan 2010

The Preferential Option For The Poor - Liberation Theology, A Call To Action, Megan Levy

Theology Conference Papers

Liberation Theology is a school of action which stems humanity of Christ which makes Him one with us, in suffering, in injustice, in loneliness, in poverty, and precisely because of them He understands and loves us deeply, keeping us company through the deserts of our lives. Although Stephen Pattison declares that the only way God can appear to a starving man is in “a loaf of bread, not in prayers or words of comfort.” He seems to speak from a very “first world – materialistic” view, away from Third World realities. It is then that a developed country pastoral theology …

Recovering The Temple Mount The Politics Of Place, Memory And Identity, Britney Summit-Gil Jan 2010

Recovering The Temple Mount The Politics Of Place, Memory And Identity, Britney Summit-Gil

Theses & ETDs

The Temple Mount/Haram es-Sharif has been a center of religious worship and political turmoil for millennia. It is the site of an important Islamic shrine and mosque, and the Western Wallthe holiest site in Judaism. Jewish tradition marks it as the site of Solomons Temple, Herods Temple, and the Third Temple of the Messianic Age. The following explores the Temple Mount through Jewish literature and Israeli archaeology to understand why, in recent years, the site has drawn national and global attention. The survey is framed in the context of social memory and identity to understand the role the Temple Mount …

Sacred Pathways The Importance Of Caves In Maya Ritual And Ideology, Karin Camila Boynton Jan 2010

Sacred Pathways The Importance Of Caves In Maya Ritual And Ideology, Karin Camila Boynton

Theses & ETDs

In the Maya tradition, caves are considered important parts of the sacred landscape. Mayan art and literature often depict caves as the portals between the human realm and the Underworld. Remains of religious rituals in caves have been recovered from sites all across Mesoamerica, pointing to a possible cave complex that extends as far back as the Preclassic Olmec (1200-400 BC). In this thesis, I will use Naj Tunich a remote cave in the Guatemalan Petn as a case study to illustrate the importance of caves in Maya ritual and ideology. Naj Tunich and the artwork found within …

The LEAP essential learning outcomes provide a framework to guide student learning in both general education and the major. The LEAP initiative calls upon college administrators and faculty members to give priority to these essential learning outcomes in order to …

Supervision Of Universal Basic Education Centers In Anambra State, Nigeria: Concept, Challenges And Prospects, Edho Genesis

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)

Supervision of schools in the UBE programme of the Federal Government of Nigeria is an aspect of quality control. It is bound with the efficiency of learning and improvement of the teaching/ learning services. Quality control of Basic Education centers is closely associated with a vital component of education (Monitoring & Evaluation). Today, ‘Quality Control’ is used more or less as a synonym for supervision or inspection which is within the comprehension of the wider segment of the educated publics. Instructional supervision in Nigeria began as a process of external inspection. In the 18th century, supervision was characterized by inspection …
