The Israel Of God: A Literary-Historical And Sociological Examination Of Paul's Use Of Israel, Thomas Joshua Whitley Jan 2010

The Israel Of God: A Literary-Historical And Sociological Examination Of Paul's Use Of Israel, Thomas Joshua Whitley

MA in Religion Theses

This paper attempts to test the hypothesis that the meaning of the term "Israel" actually was open to debate and that Paul was not the only one who defined "Israel" in such a way as to endorse a particular understanding of the term. This paper further examines whether there was literary precedence for Paul's use of Israel. These claims are examined how the use of "Israel" expanded during the relatively short period of time between the appearance of post-exilic Israelite literature and Paul's writings. This is accomplished by citing various examples of Jewish and Christian literature during this time period.

Disposing Ofnon-Disposable Texts, James W. Watts Jan 2010

Disposing Ofnon-Disposable Texts, James W. Watts

Religion - All Scholarship

These concluding reflections on the essays in The Death of Sacred Texts consider evidence that the disposal of secular books also evokes serious concern. There is an inherent tension in most literate cultures between the idea of a book or enduring text on the one hand and the possibility of its disposal or destruction on the other. Disposing of books transgresses inhibitions reinforced by family, school, media, and government. The concern for book preservation involves respect for culture(s), veneration of traditions, and, at its root, the preservation of cultural values. Factors other than information preservation are at work here. The …

Eucharist: Prayer, Communion, Unity, Jeremy A. Helmes

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this thesis is to assert the theological connection between the Eucharistic Prayer and sacramental Communion. On this basis it argues that the Eucharistic Prayer ritually functions as the “heart” and “center” of the Mass, while the reception of sacramental Communion, specifically the Communion Procession, is more properly described as the ritual “summit” of the Eucharistic liturgy. It also emphasizes that the unity of the Body of Christ is the ultimate purpose of the Eucharist, which is deepened by the reception of sacramental Communion. This vital relationship between Eucharistic praying and Eucharistic Communion is in need of additional …

Juggling Toddlers, Teens, And Tenure: The Personal And Professional Realities Of Women On The Tenure Track With Children, Jennifer Lynn Sipes Jan 2010

Juggling Toddlers, Teens, And Tenure: The Personal And Professional Realities Of Women On The Tenure Track With Children, Jennifer Lynn Sipes

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to understand the personal and professional experiences of women faculty on the tenure track with children. Despite more than 30 years of conversation about gender equity since the passage of Title IX as part of the Education Amendments of 1972, an inverse relationship persists between the prestige of an academic rank and the percentage of women in that rank. Recent research has drawn attention to differences in marital and family status between men and women faculty in higher education, suggesting that childrearing may serve as an impediment to the career advancement of women faculty …

Introduction, John Shuford

Journal of Hate Studies

T

he Institute for Hate Studies at Gonzaga University is pleased to offer Volume 8 of the Journal of Hate Studies, the theme of which is “The Other Among Us.” It is a timely topic, no doubt, as nativism, racism, and extrem- ism boil over in America’s immigration debate. This volume considers those issues as well as a wider range of perspectives on engagement and disengagement with “the other” in our society, culture, and lives.

Imbedded in this volume’s theme are myriad questions. Who is the “other” among us, and what does it mean to be an “other” or to …

The Sermon At The Temple And The Sermon On The Mount: A Latter-Day Saint Approach, John W. Welch Jan 2010

The Sermon At The Temple And The Sermon On The Mount: A Latter-Day Saint Approach, John W. Welch

Maxwell Institute Publications

The Sermon on the Mount has had greater influence on the history and character of Christianity than any other text in the Bible. Yet as biblical scholar Hans Dieter Betz has recently lamented, “New Testament scholarship up to the present has offered no satisfactory explanation of this vitally important text.”

The Sermon at the Temple and the Sermon on the Mount, by John W. Welch, offers, for the first time, a thorough Latter-day Saint interpretation of Jesus’ famous sermon. The author relies especially on crucial information and details that only the Book of Mormon can supply.

In New Testament Palestine, …

The Lot Smith Company: Utah Goes To War, Joseph Stuart, Kenneth Alford Jan 2010

The Lot Smith Company: Utah Goes To War, Joseph Stuart, Kenneth Alford

Library Research Grants

The authors take a close look at the cavalry unit that was called to military service on April 28, 1862, at President Lincoln’s request. Their ninety-day period of service was the only unit-level active duty military contribution Utah Territory made during the Civil War. This paper was later published as a book chapter from "Civil War Saints" (2012, published by the Brigham Young University Religious Studies Center and the Deseret Book Company) and can be accessed here.
