How Shall I Praise Thee? Brian Leiter On Respect For Religion, Andrew Koppelman Jan 2010

How Shall I Praise Thee? Brian Leiter On Respect For Religion, Andrew Koppelman

Faculty Working Papers

In two recent papers, Brian Leiter argues that there is no good reason for law to single out religion for special treatment, and that religion is not an apt candidate for respect in the "thick" sense of being an object of favorable appraisal. Both arguments depend on a radically impoverished conception of what religion is and what it does. In this paper, I explain what Leiter leaves out, and offer an hypothesis about why. I also engage with some related reflections by Simon Blackburn and Timothy Macklem, both of whom influence, in different ways, Leiter's analysis.

A Proper De Jure Objection To The Epistemic Rationality Of Religious Belief, Todd R. Long Jan 2010

A Proper De Jure Objection To The Epistemic Rationality Of Religious Belief, Todd R. Long

Philosophy

I answer Alvin Plantinga’s challenge to provide a ‘proper’ de jure objection to religious belief. What I call the ‘sophisticates’ evidential objection’ (SEO) concludes that sophisticated Christians lack epistemic justification for believing central Christian propositions. The SEO utilizes a theory of epistemic justification in the spirit of the evidentialism of Richard Feldman and Earl Conee. I defend philosophical interest in the SEO (and its underlying evidentialism) against objections from Reformed epistemology, by addressing Plantinga’s criteria for a proper de jure objection, his anti-evidentialist arguments, and the relevance of ‘impulsional evidence’. I argue that no result from Plantinga-style Reformed epistemology precludes …

Religious Pluralism And The Turn To The Spirit: Fabc’S And Gavin D’Costa’S Theology Of Religions, Ruben C. Mendoza Jan 2010

Religious Pluralism And The Turn To The Spirit: Fabc’S And Gavin D’Costa’S Theology Of Religions, Ruben C. Mendoza

Theology Department Faculty Publications

Among the recent approaches to religious pluralism is what has been called “the turn to the Holy Spirit.”1 Theologians who employ the pneumatological approach regard it as a way out of the traditional impasses that have hindered developments in the theology of religions.2 For instance, the Pentecostal theologian Amos Yong identifies three advantages of a pneumatological approach to other religions.3 First, he considers pneumatology as the key to overcoming the dualism between Christological particularity and the cosmic Christ. The either/or of particularity/universality dissolves when one recalls that the historical Jesus was who he was because of the Spirit of God …

Mean Girls: A Reflection Of Middle School Relational Aggression, Kerry Jean Markham Jan 2010

Mean Girls: A Reflection Of Middle School Relational Aggression, Kerry Jean Markham

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

The seventh and eighth grades are a time of growth, mentally and physically. During this time students are trying to find their place in the middle school caste system. Through this journey of self discovery, students may act out with a type of aggression called relational aggression, more commonly known as emotional aggression. Through the use of taunting, passing notes, exploitation, Internet bullying etc, more powerful students bully the less powerful. This thesis uses the theoretical model of symbolic interaction to determine what social characteristics that aggressor identifiers and victim identifiers see themselves as possessing, in schools attended by students …

To Live And Die In Dixie: Robert E. Lee And Confederate Nationalism, Jacob A. Glover Jan 2010

To Live And Die In Dixie: Robert E. Lee And Confederate Nationalism, Jacob A. Glover

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

Robert E. Lee is undeniably one of the most revered figures in American history, and yet despite the adoration awarded to the man over the years, surprisingly little scholarly research has dedicated itself to an inquiry into his nationalistic leanings during the four most important years of his life—the Civil War. In fact, Lee was a dedicated Confederate nationalist during his time in service to the Confederacy, and he remained so for the rest of his life, even after his surrender at Appomattox and the taking of an oath to regain his United States citizenship. Lee identified strongly with a …

Faith, Philosophy, Scripture, James E. Faulconer Jan 2010

Faith, Philosophy, Scripture, James E. Faulconer

Maxwell Institute Publications

Faith, Philosophy, Scripture is a collection of ten path-breaking essays informed by Professor James E. Faulconer’s work as a philosopher and his abiding faith as a Latter-day Saint.

“The confidence of my faith, a confidence that came by revelation,” Faulconer writes,” has allowed me to hear the questions of philosophy without fear, and philosophy has never asked me to give up my faith, though it has asked questions about it.” Faith is the starting point, scripture offers the data, and philosophy more supplement than competitor. Faith, philosophy, and scripture help make sense of each other.

These essays ask what it …

A Textual History Of The Book Of Abraham: Manuscripts And Editions, Brian M. Hauglid Jan 2010

A Textual History Of The Book Of Abraham: Manuscripts And Editions, Brian M. Hauglid

Maxwell Institute Publications

In July 1835 at Kirtland Ohio, a traveling antiquities dealer brought to Joseph Smith, the Mormon Prophet, four Egyptian mummies and several rolls of papyri. Upon inspection Smith determined that one of the rolls contained a lost record of the patriarch Abraham. After purchasing these artifacts for $2400 Smith generated through translation five chapters that appeared during March 1842 in Nauvoo, Illinois in the Times and Seasons, a Mormon periodical, under the title “The Book of Abraham”. This book has since become a canonized text of scripture for members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

A Textual …
