Do Parental Monitoring Strategies, Parental Knowledge, And Adolescent Risk -Taking Differ Based On Family Income And Parental Marital Status? The Role Of Resiliency, Shawn M. Golden-Llewellyn
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Adolescents living in low socioeconomic status (SES) are more likely to engage in risk-taking behaviors, such as alcohol and other drug use, sexual behavior, and vandalism. Resiliency theory suggests that protective factors could reduce adolescent risk-taking in low SES families. Parental monitoring, parent behaviors involved in tracking their adolescents' whereabouts and activities, tends to be less evident in low SES families. However, it has also been identified as a protective factor in fostering resiliency in adolescents living in high-risk situations. The current study examined group differences in parental knowledge, parental monitoring strategies, and adolescent risk-taking based on two socioeconomic factors, …

The Development Of An Emotional Response To Writing Measure: The Affective Cognition Writing Survey, Ronald G. Fischer, Jerome M. Fischer, Sachin Jain
Michigan Journal of Counseling: Research, Theory and Practice
This study was designed to develop and initiate the validation of the Affective Cognition Writing Survey (ACWS), a psychological instrument used to measure emotional expression through writing. Procedures for development and validation of the instrument are reported. Subsequently, factor analysis extracted six factors: Positive Processing, Liberating Feelings, Reader Consciousness, Confl ict Processing, Inner Exploration, and Emotional Synthesis. The factors have important implications for counseling, conducting research sensitive to writing, emotional intelligence and education.

Improving Services For Students With Disabilities At Community Colleges, Michael William Duggan

The purpose of this qualitative case study was to discover ways in which community college faculty and administrators can better facilitate learning for students with disabilities. Semi-structured interviews, preinterview questionnaires, and a review of relevant documents were used to gain an understanding of how community college faculty perceive the challenges of teaching students with disabilities. Additional research goals included an exploration of strategies community college faculty have found effective in assisting students with disabilities to be successful, actions community college administrators have taken that effectively address issues related to success for students with disabilities, and approaches community college administrators use …

Family Faculty Perceptions: Sharing Their Story, Erin Jarry

This qualitative study examines the experiences of family members who participated as Family Faculty in the Families as Faculty program. All of these family members were primary caregivers for students with disabilities. Families as Faculty is part of some of the teacher preparation programs at universities in New Mexico. Three research questions were explored. First, why do families choose to participate in this program? Second, what are the benefits and challenges they experience as participants in the program? And finally, what about their experience influences their decision to continue or terminate their participation in the program? Data were collected through …

A Need Assessment For People Who Have Multiple Sclerosis And Their Support Groups, Eric Lee Markley

This paper discusses the problem the researcher finds in the lack of information on what people with Multiple Sclerosis (MS) are looking for in support groups that are designed around specifically for people with MS. This paper discusses what MS is, the reasoning on designing a study on this topic, and the significance of the project to social work. The type of research design that was used to find this information was a survey questionaire. Theoretical within the context of a social comparison model. A total of 58 people completed the survey.
