University Of New Hampshire Students' Perceptions Of The University Of New Hampshire Police Department, Adam Gaudreault, Nathan Riggs

Perspectives

This project involves discovering the positive and negative perceptions that the UNH student body has on the UNH police department. Classes of varying sizes were given surveys that contained demographic questions, as well as questions on participants’ perceptions of the local police force. Using survey analyses from the students attending the University of New Hampshire, conclusions were made about the perceptions and several characteristics that were found to be important. Important results were that UNH student class standing is unimportant in the perceptions of UNH police; males are more negative in their perceptions of the police than females; when misconduct …

Do Community-Based Corrections Have An Effect On Recidivism Rates? A Review Of Community Supervision, Supportive Reintegration, Electronic Monitoring Programs And Their Impacts On Reducing Reoffending, Bethany Schmidt May 2010

Do Community-Based Corrections Have An Effect On Recidivism Rates? A Review Of Community Supervision, Supportive Reintegration, Electronic Monitoring Programs And Their Impacts On Reducing Reoffending, Bethany Schmidt

Perspectives

This paper will examine the impact and effect community-based corrections have on the reduction of recidivism for adult offenders. More specifically, I will focus on three commonly used types of such corrections in the United States: community supervision, supportive reintegration, and electronic monitoring. I propose that these community-based correctional programs will reduce reoffending rates.

I will first provide a theoretical perspective to provide a foundational support, followed by a background of community-based corrections and their usage in contemporary American courts. I will then review the research regarding community supervision, supportive reintegration, and electronic monitoring, and discuss how these programs affect …

Dynamic Spectrum Allocation In Cellular Networks, Mahmoud Al-Ayyoub May 2010

Dynamic Spectrum Allocation In Cellular Networks, Mahmoud Al-Ayyoub

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

In cellular networks, a recent trend is to make spectrum access dynamic in the spatial and temporal dimensions, for the sake of efficient utilization of spectrum. In such a model, the spectrum is divided into channels and is periodically allocated to the base stations in both centralized and distributed manners with different goals in mind for each approach. For the centralized approach, an auction-based market mechanism is favored due to its simplicity, efficiency and high utilization of the spectrum. The model consists of a centralized spectrum broker who owns a part of the spectrum, divides it into channels and issues short-term …

Comparative Analysis Between Routine Preventative Uniformed Police Patrols And Crime Reduction And Calls For Service, Oscar F. Vigoa May 2010

Comparative Analysis Between Routine Preventative Uniformed Police Patrols And Crime Reduction And Calls For Service, Oscar F. Vigoa

Graduate Student Dissertations, Theses, Capstones, and Portfolios

The majority of the theoretical and empirical literature on police patrols and crime has concentrated on the logical assumption that more uniformed preventative police patrols reduce crime. However, few studies have examined the comparative relationship between more police officers doing preventative patrols in a specific area and crime rates and response to calls for service. The objective of this research was to examine whether more uniformed police officers, doing routine preventative patrols, assigned to an area the size of a small city reduces class one crimes (robbery, residential, and commercial burglary and auto theft). The principal intention of the study …

Distracted Driving – Preliminary Analysis And Survey, Jerry G. Pigman, Kenneth R. Agent, Eric R. Green

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

This report primarily focuses on an attempt to document the level of driver distraction existing in Kentucky through an analysis of crash data and by conducting an observational survey of drivers. Additional research is cited as a means of comparing other studies with results from Kentucky, as well as establishing a definition of distracted driving. The status of laws related to use of cell phones in other states was summarized, and the recently passed legislation in Kentucky was noted by incorporation of the full text as an appendix.

It was determined from analysis of Kentucky data that if the three …

Police Reform: A Determinant Of Democracy's Development, Tania M. Pinc May 2010

Police Reform: A Determinant Of Democracy's Development, Tania M. Pinc

2010

This paper analyzes police reform and its relationship to the development of democracy. To this end, it develops a model that explains police reform by three independent variables: (1) stage of democracy, (2) dimension of change, and (3) type of intervention. The methodology employs the review of the literature about police reform in the United States, Britain and Latin America to test the model. It also examines police reform in Brazil to study the demilitarization of the police force.

An Exploratory Study On Issues And Challenges Of Agile Software Development With Scrum, Juyun Joey Cho

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The purpose of this dissertation was to explore critical issues and challenges that might arise in agile software development processes with Scrum. It also sought to provide management guidelines to help organizations avoid and overcome barriers in adopting the Scrum method as a future software development method. A qualitative research method design was used to capture the knowledge of practitioners and scrutinize the Scrum software development process in its natural settings. An in-depth case study was conducted in two organizations where the Scrum method was fully integrated in every aspect of two organizations' software development processes. One organization provides large-scale …

Illinois Courts And The Law Of Miranda Waivers: A Policy Worth Preserving, Timothy P. O'Neill May 2010

Illinois Courts And The Law Of Miranda Waivers: A Policy Worth Preserving, Timothy P. O'Neill

Northern Illinois University Law Review

For the last several decades, Illinois courts have followed a wise policy of refusing to accept Miranda waivers from suspects whose mental deficiencies have prevented them from knowingly understanding their rights. Yet, it is possible that the United States Supreme Court may be ready to reject this position and hold as a matter of federal law that a suspect's waiver cannot be found invalid based merely on the suspect's subjective state of mind without some objective showing of coercive police action. Regardless of what the Supreme Court may eventually decide, this essay urges Illinois courts to retain its current procedure …

Toward The Development Of A Model To Estimate The Readability Of Credentialing-Examination Materials, Barbara Anne Badgett May 2010

Toward The Development Of A Model To Estimate The Readability Of Credentialing-Examination Materials, Barbara Anne Badgett

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

The purpose of this study was to develop a set of procedures to establish readability, including an equation, that accommodates the multiple-choice item format and occupational-specific language related to credentialing examinations. The procedures and equation should be appropriate for learning materials, examination materials, and occupational materials. To this end, variance in readability estimates accounted for by combinations of semantic and syntactic variables were explored, a method was devised to accommodate occupational-specific vocabulary, and new-model readability formulas were created and calibrated. Existing readability formulas were then recalibrated with the same materials used to calibrate the new-model formulas. The new-model and recalibrated …

Blameworthiness And Dangerousness: An Analysis Of Violent Female Capital Offenders In The United States And China, Courtney Brooke Lahaie May 2010

Blameworthiness And Dangerousness: An Analysis Of Violent Female Capital Offenders In The United States And China, Courtney Brooke Lahaie

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

The United States and China represent two of the leading nations that retain the death penalty in both law and practice. Research suggests that judges' sentencing decisions are based primarily on two factors, blameworthiness and dangerousness. Studies involving gender and sentencing in capital punishment cases tend to provide inconsistent findings. The current study uses case narratives to examine the direct and conjunctive effects of various factors on the sentencing decisions of violent female capital offenders in the United States and China. The findings suggest that the concepts of blameworthiness and dangerousness are distinctly defined in the United States and China. …

Evaluation Of Safety Impact Of Access Management In Urban Areas, Xuecai Xu May 2010

Evaluation Of Safety Impact Of Access Management In Urban Areas, Xuecai Xu

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

The access provided by streets and highways to adjacent lands are managed by controlling the spacings between the access points including signals, driveways, and media openings on mid-block segments, and setting the limit on the corner clearances around intersections. There have been studies on evaluating the impact of access management techniques on safety and mobility in urban areas. Samples of mid-block segments and intersections can be collected from selected arterials. Because the mid-block segments or intersections in the same arterials share the same missing information, safety and mobility on them show unique features that should be taken into account when …

The Benefits Of Limiting Strict Liability For Used-Product Sellers, Antonio J. Senagore May 2010

The Benefits Of Limiting Strict Liability For Used-Product Sellers, Antonio J. Senagore

Northern Illinois University Law Review

This article urges courts to adopt the majority rule that strict liability should not apply to the mere commercial sale of a used good. Despite that majority rule, a significant minority of courts still imposes strict liability on new- and used-product sellers alike. This split persists because courts adopting the minority rule have overlooked the significant economic and social benefits of the used product market. This article examines the specific benefits of a used product market according to the policies leading to the creation of strict products liability. The used-product market fosters efficiency, which lets low-income consumers buy affordable quality …

Did The Madisonian Compromise Survive Detention At Guantanamo?, Lumen N. Mulligan May 2010

Did The Madisonian Compromise Survive Detention At Guantanamo?, Lumen N. Mulligan

Faculty Works

In this essay, I take up the Court’s less heralded second holding in Boumediene v. Bush - that a federal habeas court must have the institutional capacity to find facts, which in Boumediene itself meant that a federal district court must be available to the petitioners. Although this has gone largely unnoticed, I contend that this holding is inconsistent with the Madisonian Compromise - the standard view that the Constitution does not require jurisdiction in any federal court, except the Supreme Court. In fact, it appears that the Court adopted Justice Story’s position that the Constitution requires vesting of jurisdiction …

Classifying Communities In Maine: A Comparative Analysis Of Fiscal Determinants, Amanda K. Rector May 2010

Classifying Communities In Maine: A Comparative Analysis Of Fiscal Determinants, Amanda K. Rector

Muskie School Capstones and Dissertations

Every day, municipalities around Maine are faced with decisions about the types of services to provide their residents and how to pay for those services. Some communities have an easier time of this than others. Hub communities that draw commuters and visitors must provide a broad array of services with an often limited property tax base. In many cases, communities are faced with difficult tradeoffs between cutting services or increasing property tax rates.

Development Of An Outcomes-Based Undergraduate Curriculum In Homeland Security, James D. Ramsay, Daniel A. Cutrer, Robert Raffel May 2010

Development Of An Outcomes-Based Undergraduate Curriculum In Homeland Security, James D. Ramsay, Daniel A. Cutrer, Robert Raffel

Security Studies & International Affairs - Daytona Beach

As a professional discipline, homeland security is complex, dynamic, and interdisciplinary and not given to facile definition. As an academic discipline, homeland security is relatively new and growing, and its workforce aging. As such, there is an acknowledged need to develop academic homeland security programs to try and meet anticipated workforce needs. However, the lack of an accreditation system or a set of available published outcomes (or standards) have complicated efforts towards homeland security program development. At present, determining which courses to teach and which outcomes in each course to pursue must be left to anecdotal conversations, reviews of the …

Progression And Remediation Policies For At-Risk Nursing Students, Amy J. Falck

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this independent project is to examine the efficacy of the implementation of progression and remediation policies in nursing students who are "atrisk" for failing the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX). Nursing educators can identify the at-risk student and determine which type of guidance would be appropriate to help them achieve success. Issues addressed consist of the severity of the nursing shortage, identifying what characteristics place a student at-risk, when and how to intervene by utilizing progression and remediation policies, and a review of five policies implemented in nursing schools in a tri-state area. An extensive review of …
