Willpower Taxes, Lee Anne Fennell Oct 2010

Willpower Taxes, Lee Anne Fennell

Public Law and Legal Theory Working Papers

Self-control and related concepts appear regularly in tax discussions, but often they are invoked hazily or blurred together with other aspects of choice over time. Despite the evident relevance of willpower to consumption patterns, wealth accumulation, and, ultimately, well-being, there is no consensus about whether and how heterogeneity along this dimension should factor into tax policy. There is support in the tax literature for such divergent responses as funneling more resources to low-willpower people, penalizing them for their lapses, and limiting their choices. Whether we should follow one of these approaches, or some other approach entirely, requires a careful analysis …

Tools For Evaluating Team Performance In Simulation-Based Training, Michael A. Rosen, Sallie J. Weaver, Elizabeth H. Lazzara, Eduardo Salas, Teresa Wu, Salvatore Silvestri, Nicola Schiebel, Sandra Almeida, Heidi B. King

Publications

Teamwork training constitutes one of the core approaches for moving healthcare systems toward increased levels of quality and safety, and simulation provides a powerful method of delivering this training, especially for face-paced and dynamic specialty areas such as Emergency Medicine. Team performance measurement and evaluation plays an integral role in ensuring that simulation-based training for teams (SBTT) is systematic and effective. However, this component of SBTT systems is overlooked frequently. This article addresses this gap by providing a review and practical introduction to the process of developing and implementing evaluation systems in SBTT. First, an overview of team performance evaluation …

Effects Of National Culture On Types Of Knowledge Sharing In Virtual Communities, Keng Siau, J. Erickson, Fiona Fui-Hoon Nah Oct 2010

Effects Of National Culture On Types Of Knowledge Sharing In Virtual Communities, Keng Siau, J. Erickson, Fiona Fui-Hoon Nah

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Organizations are using virtual communities to facilitate knowledge management and to enhance communication among employees, customers, and other interested individuals. Individual users can use virtual communities to engage in knowledge sharing. Professional communicators need to understand and adapt to a globalized and “flat” world, where people across different cultures interact freely and easily with one another in virtual communities. An intriguing question regarding virtual communities relates to whether national culture affects communication and types of knowledge sharing. This study examines the influence of US and Chinese national cultures on types of knowledge-sharing activities in virtual communities. The findings indicate that …

Dog Parks: An Application Of Place Attachment Theory, Andrew Pariser Oct 2010

Dog Parks: An Application Of Place Attachment Theory, Andrew Pariser

Human Movement Studies & Special Education Theses & Dissertations

Despite their increasing popularity, dog parks have been subjected to little research. The purpose of this study was to determine if place attachment and its generally recognized sub-components of place dependence and place identity apply to dog parks. Survey respondents were given an on-site questionnaire at a Virginia and at a Florida dog park. Respondents answered questions similar to those used in previous studies of place attachment at other recreational facilities. There was a significant correlation between the constructs of place dependence and place identity and dog park usage. The combined construct of place attachment showed the highest correlation. Regression …

Examining The Dual Process Model Of Decision Making In Visual Threat Detection And Human-Automation Interaction, Patricia Chin Brennan Oct 2010

Examining The Dual Process Model Of Decision Making In Visual Threat Detection And Human-Automation Interaction, Patricia Chin Brennan

Psychology Theses & Dissertations

This study examined the degree to which emotions and/or rational thinking should be emphasized to improve performance in target detection in complex tasks. Specifically, we evaluated the dual-process model of decision making to determine whether emotion or cognition (or a combination of the two) is more powerful in influencing decisions. Additionally, we considered how decisions are influenced with the addition of an automated agent to assist human decision making. Participants (n = 120) were randomly assigned to one of three framing manipulations, each with positive and negative incentives: the analytical frame emphasized numerical gains or losses; the affective frame presented …

Engaging Emerging Populations Of Adults With Interactive Activities In A 3d Virtual Learning Environment, Kristin Woods

Journal of Extension

The Internet, particularly 3D virtual learning environments, has become a venue of choice for many young adults who have grown up in a period of rapidly advancing technology. With this in mind, a 3D virtual kitchen was created to instruct foodservice staff about foodborne hazards. Respondents reported positively about their user experience, the educational content, and the social aspects of the module. The results of this pilot project indicate that engaging young adults with a media in which they feel comfortable is feasible.

The Influence Of Parenting Stress On Mealtime Behaviors Of Low-Income African-American Mothers Of Toddlers, Dawn A. Contreras, Mildred A. Horodynski

Journal of Extension

Family stress theory provides a structure to obtain and analyze maternal perceptions of toddler feeding challenges within low-income African-American households. Focus groups, with a total of 20 mothers, were conducted in four counties in a Midwestern state in the United States. The following themes emerged from the data analysis: identification and appraisal of feeding challenges, child temperament, maternal psychological and physical states, and coping behaviors. Study conclusions provide suggestions related to child feeding that Extension educators should consider when offering culturally appropriate mealtime management interventions for African-American parents of young children.

Narrative, Normativity, And Causation, Lawrence B. Solum Oct 2010

Narrative, Normativity, And Causation, Lawrence B. Solum

Faculty Scholarship

This essay examines the relationship between constitutional narratives, causation, and normativity in the context of Barry Friedman’s book, The Will of the People: How Public Opinion Has Influenced the Supreme Court and Shaped the Meaning of the Constitution. In his book, Friedman provides a grand narrative of American constitutional history that emphasizes the role of public opinion in the development of American constitutional law. That narrative involves both implicit and explicit claims about the causal forces that shape constitutional doctrine and about normative constitutional theory. The aim of this essay is to identify those claims, excavate their theoretical assumptions, and …

What Do Jim Morrison, Kurt Cobain, Elvis Presley, And Utagawa Toyoharu Have In Common? Protecting Artistic Legacy In The United States And Japan: A Comparison Of U.S. Legal Principles And Iemoto Seido Of Japan, Geoffrey R. Scott

Connecticut Journal of International Law

Many established celebrities possess a significant non-pecuniary interest in preserving their long-term historical artistic and creative legacies in addition to commercial interests in exploiting their images. Recent claims on behalf of such U.S. personalities as Jim Morrison of The Doors, Kurt Cobain of Nirvana, and Elvis Presley as well as interests asserted by the descendants of Utagawa Toyoharu and others of Japan have, for example, illustrated this intellectual perspective. As a vehicle of modern communication and discussion, discourse on the public persona often considers societal idealism, identifications, political and economic goals and realities, and cultural influences and disparate legal traditions …

Spirituality, Religiosity, And Weight Management In Black Women, Shené L. Bowie

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Background

Obesity is a major concern in the United States and Black Americans are among those with the highest rates of overweight, obesity, and related co- morbidities. While weight loss among Black women has been studied within the context of a faith-based setting, there is little information about the relationship between spirituality, or relationship with the transcendent, and self-efficacy in the achievement and maintenance of a healthy weight.

Purpose

The purpose of this study was to analyze the relationships among spirituality, self-efficacy for physical activity and healthy eating, and body composition measures among Black women over the period of participation …

Preventive Care Utilization Among Black Women : Perceived Beliefs, Benefits And Barriers To Mammography Screening, Rowandalla Y. Dunbar

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Blacks, in comparison to other racial or ethnic groups, suffer higher rates of illness and death from many preventable or treatable diseases. Despite the significantly higher rates of mortality and disease, Blacks are least likely to utilize clinical preventive care services. Black women, who are more likely to have advanced breast cancer at time of diagnosis (Chu, Lamar, & Freeman, 2003) are least likely to seek mammography screening (National Health Interview Study, 2000). Allen, Bastani, Bazargan and Leonard (2002) examined predictors of mammography screening among women 40 years old and older residing in the South Central area of Los Angeles, …

The Implications Of ‘Religious Experience’ For Catholic-Pentecosotal Dialogue: A Catholic Perspective, Ralph Del Colle Oct 2010

The Implications Of ‘Religious Experience’ For Catholic-Pentecosotal Dialogue: A Catholic Perspective, Ralph Del Colle

Theology Faculty Research and Publications

Pentecostals consider the experience of the Holy Spirit to be at the heart of their movement. In dialogue with Pentecostals, Catholics are challenged to probe the resources of Christian experience for the theological enterprise. After examining different paradigms for the understanding of "religious experience," this essay traces the transition that has occurred in Catholic theology allowing for experience in neo-scholasticism and traditional forms of Catholic spirituality to be placed in a more constructive role in the theologies of Karl Rahner and Hans Urs von Balthasar. The essay concludes by describing the opportunity that the turn to experience affords for Catholic-Pentecostal …

From Harmelin To Graham - Justice Kennedy Stakes Out A Path To Proportional Punishment, Eva Nilsen Oct 2010

From Harmelin To Graham - Justice Kennedy Stakes Out A Path To Proportional Punishment, Eva Nilsen

Faculty Scholarship

Graham v. Florida3 is a groundbreaking decision because it revives punishment doctrine on two issues that have lain dormant since Harmelin v. Michigan4: proportionality and individualized sentencing. Although it doesn't overrule Harmelin, by recognizing the continued vitality of Weems5 and Solem 6 the Graham decision appears to acknowledge that the Court's approach to proportionality since Harmelin may be too restrictive for the U.S. justice system today. In Solem, the Court affirmed its Constitutional role in ensuring just punishment; in Graham, the Court reaffirms that role.

Harmelin has had an enormous and regrettable impact …

The objectives of the current study were to document the effects of discrimination on Latino mental health and to identify the circumstances by which ethnic identity serves a protective function. Instances of discrimination and depressive symptoms were measured every day for 13 days in a sample of Latino adults (N = 91). Multilevel random coefficient modeling showed a 1-day lagged effect in which increases in depression were observed the day following a discriminatory event. The findings also revealed differential effects of ethnic identity exploration and commitment. Whereas ethnic identity exploration was found to exacerbate the influence of daily discrimination …

Exploring The Role Of Attachment Style In The Relation Between Family Aggression And Abuse In Adolescent Dating Relationships, John H. Grych, Kristen M. Kinsfogel Oct 2010

Exploring The Role Of Attachment Style In The Relation Between Family Aggression And Abuse In Adolescent Dating Relationships, John H. Grych, Kristen M. Kinsfogel

Psychology Faculty Research and Publications

This study investigated romantic attachment style as a potential moderator of the link between family aggression and dating aggression, and examined its relations with documented mediators of the impact of interparental conflict on dating behavior: attitudes about the justifiability of aggression and anger regulation. Participants were 391 ethnically diverse 14-to 18-year-olds (52% female). Attachment style was a significant moderator for boys and girls, but the pattern of results differed by gender. In general, attachment anxiety was a more consistent predictor than avoidance of boys’ dating aggression, cognitions, and emotions, whereas anxiety and avoidance both acted as significant moderators for girls. …

The Great Library Of Alexandria?, Heather Philips Sep 2010

The Great Library Of Alexandria?, Heather Philips

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

Though it was Alexandria's Pharos lighthouse that was counted among the Seven Wonders of the World, Ancient Alexandria was a city in which wonders abounded. The city featured wide boulevards laid out in a grid, and buildings constructed of granite and marble. Some say that Alexander himself had a hand in planning this great city. One of the most notable wonders of the city was the Great Library of Alexandria (hereinafter Great Library or Library), an institution which has assumed legendary proportions in the mythos of western civilization. However, institutions which assume mythological proportions are often obscured by the very …

Redefining Sources As Social Acts: Genre Theory In Information Literacy Instruction, Joel M. Burkholder Sep 2010

Redefining Sources As Social Acts: Genre Theory In Information Literacy Instruction, Joel M. Burkholder

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

Long before the emergence of the World Wide Web, librarians had a long tradition of collecting and classifying physical materials. Influenced by these activities, information literacy instruction has defined and taught sources as objects of similar content and/or format. Because of their ability to organize information for easy retrieval, such definitions are helpful from a practical standpoint. Unfortunately, they do little to account for a source's role as a communicative act shared within and between communities. To expand our definition we must look to Genre Theory. Genre Theory examines how groups develop language—genres--to respond to recurrent, rhetorical situations. Seen as …

A New Algorithm For The Management Of Dermatofibrosarcoma Protuberans, Carolyn Graham Goldberg Sep 2010

A New Algorithm For The Management Of Dermatofibrosarcoma Protuberans, Carolyn Graham Goldberg

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

The purpose of this project was to design an algorithm for the management of Dermatofibrosarcom Protuberans (DFSP.) The National Cancer Center Network guidelines suggest immediate reconstruction in most cases after DFSP resection. We believe this algorithm is inadequate. Due to the infiltrating nature of DFSP, tumor margins are often positive after resection. Immediate reconstruction in the context of residual tumor is problematic because of the risk for spreading microscopic disease and the potential to compromise reconstructive options. At our institution we examined the prevalence of positive margins on permanent pathology after immediate closure following surgical resection of DFSP. Forty-one patients …

Impulsivity, Impulsive And Reflective Processes And The Development Of Alcohol Use And Misuse In Adolescents And Young Adults, Reinout W. Wiers, Susan L. Ames, Wilhelm Hofmann, Marvin Krank, Alan W. Stacy Sep 2010

Impulsivity, Impulsive And Reflective Processes And The Development Of Alcohol Use And Misuse In Adolescents And Young Adults, Reinout W. Wiers, Susan L. Ames, Wilhelm Hofmann, Marvin Krank, Alan W. Stacy

CGU Faculty Publications and Research

This paper contrasts dual-process and personality approaches in the prediction of addictive behaviors and related risk behaviors. In dual-process models, behavior is described as the joint outcome of qualitatively different “impulsive” (or associative) and “reflective” processes. There are important individual differences regarding both types of processes, and the relative strength of both in a specific situation is influenced by prior behavior and state variables (e.g., fatigue, alcohol use). From this perspective, a specific behavior (e.g., alcohol misuse) can be predicted by the combined indices of the behavior-related impulsive processes (e.g., associations with alcohol), and reflective processes, including the ability to …
